LORD OF THE RINGS

Three Rings - for the royal elves in the heavenly tents,

Seven - for the rulers of the gnomes, lapidaries in the womb of stone,

Nine - for the Nine, clothed in grave dust,

The Lord on the black throne will wear one

One Ring will conquer them, one will gather them,

One thing will attract them and bind them into a black chain

In a land called Mordor, where darkness spreads.

BACKGROUND

The long life of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892–1973) is over - just ended, not cut short! - one and a half decades ago. It became the threshold of his posthumous existence on earth, the end of which is not yet in sight. If we look for a similarity for this life, then most of all, perhaps, it resembles a spacious, but not at all huge, just a large office, aka a home library, in an old, that is, just a Victorian, house; on the right is a fireplace with a marble plaque, an armchair by the fireplace, engravings, carved shelves with curiosities - between the shelves. A lot of things (mostly books, although there are not too many of them), but, oddly enough, nothing superfluous. And the owner seemed to have just left and was about to return - he left not through the door (we entered through the door), but through a shining and truly huge window at the other end of the office. And his life - not at all an armchair, but that comes later - is only imaginable in a bright and pure light.

Of course, he came out, there is no escape from death, but he came out to stay with us. And he stayed, even though he didn’t seem to be in the office for the time being; Well, why not, he exists, and even without any special mysticism - said the inveterate materialist Lord Bertrand Russell: how do we know, suddenly the tables behind us turn into kangaroos? We don’t need this, we can do without Australian marsupials, but John Ronald Ruel, of course, is present behind us, and trees grow behind her, without which he could not imagine life, they were the main life-giving principle for him. And we will discover many things that are still strangely familiar in reality through the efforts of J. R. R. Tolkien, casually looking around.

But we don’t look back - we’ll have time; We slowly look around the long life left for us to see. And the outlines of the imaginary office blur: in the last years of Professor Tolkien’s life, his modest library was located in a former garage attached to a standard modern house on the outskirts of Oxford. This extension, by the way, also served as an office where the world-famous author of the epic “The Lord of the Rings” received visitors, including the English writer Humphrey Carpenter, who subsequently, in 1977, published his biography, a real storehouse of facts - you can’t draw it out. We will draw. Let us move from the end of life to its beginning and imagine times almost unimaginable, although not so distant.

John Ronald Ruel Tolkien (and John, and especially Ruel, are family names for the time being, and his friends always called him simply Ronald) was born on January 3, 1892 in the city of Bloemfontein, the capital of the South African Orange Republic, more than seven hundred kilometers away northeast of Cape Town, in the middle of a flat, dusty, bare steppe - the veld. Seven years later, the Anglo-Boer War, which excited the whole world and opened the 20th century, raged, everywhere they sang “Transvaal, Transvaal, my country, you are all on fire,” and the name of the miserable town flashed in front-line reports on the front pages of newspapers. But for now it was such a wilderness... The same one into which it was then customary to send young Englishmen - so that they could show and prove their perseverance and enterprise. So the third-generation Englishman Arthur Tolkien, the grandson of the German immigrant piano maker Tolkün, when the family firm went completely bankrupt, secured a position as a bank manager in Bloemfontein. He wanted not so much to go to distant lands as to marry his beloved girl, a certain Mabel Suffield, whose father, having descended from a clothier to a traveling salesman, demanded life prospects from the groom. In his native Birmingham they were not, and in South Africa, although distant, they were identified. Mabel was given away reluctantly, and Arthur took her to the thirtieth kingdom, that is, to the Orange Republic, where she bore him not only the aforementioned Ronald, but also his younger brother Hilary Arthur Ruel.

The eldest son remembers very little from South Africa: well, he was bitten by a tarantula, well, snakes live in the barn and little ones can’t go there, the neighbor’s monkeys jump along the fence, trying to either steal or eat laundry, jackals howl at night and The lions are roaring, the father is planting trees, and all around is the terrible expanse of the boundless veldt, the heavy heat and the withered tall grass. And perhaps nothing more. No, Professor Tolkien shook his head, I don’t seem to remember anything else.

In April 1895, the boys and their mother sailed to England to see their relatives and take a break from the South African climate. We had a good rest and went back to our father. On the eve of his departure, on February 14, 1896, a letter was written under the dictation of four-year-old Ronald: “Now I have become so big, and I have a coat and a coat just like a big one... You probably won’t even recognize me and the baby... “This letter was not sent, which is why it was preserved. On this day, a telegram arrived saying that my father had a cerebral hemorrhage - a consequence of rheumatism. The next day - about his death.

There was no need to sail to South Africa. Mabel Tolkien was left in Birmingham with two young orphans in her arms and almost no means of support: her husband managed to save very little in five Bloemfontein years. True, she knew Latin, French, German, drew, played the piano - therefore she could give lessons. And she decided to somehow make ends meet, the main thing is not to depend on anyone, not to count on anyone, not to be obligated to anyone. However, there was no hope for the needy relatives on both sides. She rented a cottage cheaply outside the city, near the road from Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon. Children should grow up near a river or lake, among trees and greenery - this was one of her firm beliefs. Mabel generally held strong beliefs and soon found a solid basis for them by converting to Catholicism. (She was widowed at twenty-five, was very pretty and charming, but had no intention of living again.) At that time in England, this conversion meant a lot, and above all, in addition to a change in generally accepted opinions, a special way of life, almost demonstratively opposed to the general social life .

Moreover, she decided to, as they say, “spoil” the children, greatly complicating their life, and with her characteristic rigor, she took up their religious education. The role of this maternal decision in the fate and formation of the personality of Ronald Tolkien is difficult to overestimate. By the will of circumstances, it became irreversible, and Tolkien never compromised one iota of the religious principles taught to him at a tender age. True, he did not have any neophyte zeal, and unlike, say, his older contemporary, the convert G. K. Chesterton, he did not consider it necessary to proclaim his credo at all crossroads. But in another way they are very similar: both of these adherents of the Roman Catholic religion are English to the core. Ronald, by the way, outwardly resembled his mother (Hilary resembled his father) and felt truly at home only in the deep English province, the Worcestershire “outback”.

Mabel taught her sons not only religious doctrine and the law of God. Apparently, she had remarkable teaching talent, inherited by her eldest son: she perfectly prepared the boys to study at the most prestigious school in Birmingham, which had very high demands. It was she who inspired Ronald to lovingly study languages; It was to her that he owed the fact that, in the end, having won the competition, he secured for himself in 1903 the opportunity to study at public expense. If this had not happened, his fate would have been completely different. Because Mabel Tolkien died in 1904.

She entrusted the children to her confessor, Father Francis Morgan; He turned out to be a caring, diligent, reliable and strict guardian. He managed the rest of his savings as skillfully as possible; He used his own money (and he had very little of it) without counting it. Fortunately, he lived for a long time, and his charges remained respectfully grateful to him throughout their lives. He, however, made a serious mistake, for which Ronald was especially grateful to him: having found a boarding house for the boys in 1908 (they did not get along with their cousin), Father Morgan did not pay any attention to one resident there - nineteen-year-old illegitimate orphan Edith Bratt. Due to the nature of his occupation, he was apparently not used to noticing young and very pretty girls, especially since this one was three years older than Ronald.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is the author of the famous 20th century epic novel The Lord of the Rings. It is difficult to find a person who has not heard of him. The writer worked very long and carefully on the work, and when it was released, it created a real sensation. Movies, games, and a lot of fan fiction were created based on the book. The famous trilogy has become a kind of culture among fans and has greatly influenced the fantasy genre as a whole.

The novel, which includes three parts, is a continuation of the story “The Hobbit”. At the beginning of the book "The Lord of the Rings" the main character of this story appears - the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. He decides to retire. He gives a ring to his nephew Frodo. It has magical powers. The one who puts it on becomes invisible. But that's not all it can do. This Ring of Omnipotence, which is the main one among all magic rings, subjugates them. The ring also causes an uncontrollable desire to have it and can take over the owner's mind. It can only be destroyed where it was created. Together with his friends, Frodo heads to the lands of the elves to decide the fate of the ring.

In the lands of the elves, a meeting is held to decide what to do with the ring. Some believe that his magic can be used to fight the enemy, others want to destroy him. Finally, it was decided that we must go on a dangerous journey and do everything possible to ensure that it is destroyed. Frodo takes on this task himself, he will be accompanied by dwarves, elves and wizards who form the Fellowship of the Ring. But their path will not be easy at all, because there are those who want to possess the ring...

J.R.R. Tolkien created a stunning and unique world of Middle-earth. He described in detail its geographical features and the creatures living in it. The character of each character is clearly defined, they all seem to come to life in the mind, their images are complete and vivid. The writer's talent is admirable, and the world of Middle-earth is so captivating that it seems as if you are living in it yourself.

The work belongs to the Fantasy genre. It was published in 1954 by the Azbuka publishing house. The book is part of the "Legendarium of Middle-earth" series.
