How to model a dress pattern

Reshoot the front half of the dress pattern completely on tracing paper (see Fig. 1). Draw red modeling lines as shown in the dress pattern drawing. Cut off the front of the dress at the waist and cut the upper part of the pattern along the red modeling lines, move apart.

Cut the lower part of the front (skirt of the dress) along the tuck line and push it into folds (see Fig. 1).

Reshoot the back of the dress completely and model it as shown in fig. 2.

This dress is made of elastic material, so a zipper is not necessary. The shoulder strap of the dress is cut separately, 8 cm wide (4 cm in finished form) and 16-18 cm long (the length of the strap must be adjusted directly when trying on the dress).

The first associations arising from the word "Greece" are beauty, harmony, proportion, antique clothes. Images of Greek goddesses, their beautiful silhouettes, draped in fabric from head to toe. Light, airy, flowing - only such dresses could be worn by these mythical women. The dresses of Greek women are the most symmetrical, proportional, balanced and organized, in a word, everything in them is subject to the basic laws of architecture.

The ancient Greeks turned out to be not only brilliant builders, but also skillful creators of the most feminine dress in the history of fashion. Dresses in this style will always be fashionable, because the classics are eternal.

Today, the Greek style of dress cannot be called extravagant, it is rather unusual, sculptural and at the same time nobly simple. Multi-layered fabrics collected by a brooch - and now, the simplest Greek dress is ready. Drapery, all kinds of folds, thin translucent fabrics in several layers - the style allows all this. Moreover, the layering of the hem gives the image femininity, charm and fragility.

Ancient Greece lived according to the law of symmetry. It was observed in architecture, in the construction of thought, in the creation of a costume. But modern dress can be asymmetrical. Playing on contrasts is its weighty advantage. Emphasized high waist, straight silhouette, long straight cut, hem strewn with pleats and folds and at the same time bare shoulder - this is what attracts many women. Playing on the contrasts of symmetry and asymmetry, Elie Saab, Valentino include a classic one-shoulder Greek style dress in their collections, thus causing a stunning effect.

Another design decision - drapery crosswise in the chest area, high waist, flowing fabrics, vertical folds, shiny details, immediately conjures up the artistic image of Thais of Athens. Chiffon dresses in the style of a Greek tunic are offered by Kenzo's, the House of Chanel. Marc Jacobs recommends wearing a tunic with genuine leather sandals. Malandrino and Monique Lhuillier adorn her dresses with jewels. Graceful and sparkling dresses in the Greek style at the designer Marchesa, thick and flowing at Yves Saint Laurent. Long, puffy styles of dresses require high heels, open shoulders and arms - large bracelets.

Wedding dresses in the Greek style

Wedding dresses deserve special attention. Captivating, delightful and bewitching are the key words that characterize them. It is enough to look at the collections of wedding dresses of such leading designers as Vera Wang, Badgley Mischka, Alberta Ferretti to appreciate the Greek style, sliding in everything: reliefs, lines and draperies. You will be pleasantly surprised by the incredible lightness of the dress, you may get the feeling that it is weightless. The combination of white and gold colors is happy and luxurious. A fitted silhouette or a flowing drapery from the chest line - it will be pleasant to choose the style of the dress to your taste, because there is no more beautiful dress for a woman than a wedding one!

One of the most important moments in tailoring a dress in the Greek style, or rather in preparing for this process, is the choice of a suitable material. You don’t need to feel sorry for the fabric for such an outfit - it should fall in beautiful folds, which not only looks very aesthetically pleasing, but also allows you to hide some minor body flaws.

Preference should be given in this case to light materials such as muslin, satin or fine knitwear. Soft velvet may also be suitable. An important condition when choosing a fabric is that it must be wrinkle-resistant. It is also desirable that it does not crumble at the cut point - this will significantly reduce the time for processing seams.

In general, you will need at least 3.5-4.5 meters of matter with a width of about one and a half meters. In addition to it, various decorative elements are also needed - braid for inlay and other trim details, cords for draping a dress, etc. The need for certain accessories will depend solely on the chosen style.

You should not choose too complex a model if you do not have much experience in tailoring. The Greek dress is good because it's all about the ability to correctly lay the folds. In this case, the dress can generally have a minimum number of seams.

For example, it is worth dwelling on such a model, which is based on a rectangle. Its short side is equal to the width of the outfit, and the long side is equal to its double length.

First you need to draw a straight line that will pass exactly in the middle of this geometric figure made of fabric. This will be the shoulder line. Having marked the middle on it, it is necessary to draw a line perpendicular to the neck. How long it will be depends on the preferences of the seamstress herself. However, it is important that the incision is sufficient to at least fit the head into it. However, for a better fit, it is desirable that the neckline captures the back of the dress a little.

In the movie "Alexander", Angelina Jolie's character Olympias wore the same type of Greek-style dress, only in different colors. Photo: kinopoisk

Now you need to baste and then stitch the side seams, leaving enough space for a slot for the hands. The slit should be quite large and may even end at chest level. In addition, it is necessary to process the neckline, sheathing it with an inlay from the same fabric from which the outfit is made, or from a contrasting braid - this is a matter of taste.

You can do the same with the cutouts for the hands. If you have broad shoulders, and you do not want to emphasize this feature of your physique, you should not sheathe this part of the dress with a contrasting fabric. It is better to simply tuck the edge and draw an even line there with thin, inconspicuous threads.

Along the line of the shoulders, it is necessary to carefully pick up the fabric so that it falls with a soft drapery, and then fasten it in the desired way. If you want the shoulders to be actually open, you can use two large brooches here, connecting the matter with them into a kind of beam. Otherwise, you should try just stitching the dress in this area, thus fixing the shoulder folds. It is quite acceptable to attach a beautiful braid over this seam.

Elena's dress (actress Diane Kruger) in the movie "Troy" was decorated with stones and embroidery in the form of braid. Photo: kinopoisk

Now it remains to collect neat folds under the chest or slightly lower (as far as the features of the figure allow). And it is not necessary to make a line in this place. You can use a thin belt to match the dress, cords or other decorative elements.

At the end of the tailoring, you need to process the bottom of the outfit. To do this, you can tuck it a little and hem it, or simply overstitch it with an overlock. Of course, after each of the above actions, you should definitely try on the product, evaluating the results of your own work.

How to sew a beautiful dress? For more than one season, the Greek-style dress model has been very popular. Such a dress can be put on, as they say: "And to the feast, and the world, and to good deeds." A Greek dress with your own hands will favorably emphasize the dignity of the figure and hide the flaws. How to sew a dress lined with corrugated fabric, this will be discussed in my master class.

You will need:

  • Fabric on the dress (this can be any light fabric: chiffon, silk, satin, etc.)
  • Lining fabric
  • Hidden zip 50.0 cm.
  • Threads in the color of the fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Machine needle No. 100
  • Overlock
  • Tailor's scissors
  • Thick paper for patterns
  • Needle with thread
  • Tailor's pins

Cutting preparation

Bodice pattern modeling

To model the dress, you will need basic patterns for the front and back of the appropriate size. Patterns need to be transferred to thick paper, where the transformation of the pattern will take place.

After that, diagonal arcuate lines are applied to the shelf, which will serve as an assembly along the front bodice. The same must be done with the back. In addition, you need to add additional allowances to the centers of the parts, for smell.

Next, the details of the shelves and backs are cut out, including along arcuate lines. On the shelf, one of the diagonal lines should pass through the end of the tuck and the chest tuck will close. The number of diagonal lines depends on the volume of the planned assembly, i.e. to achieve a significant volume, the lines are made larger, for a moderate volume, the number of lines is reduced.

cutting

open bodice

This model uses chiffon-corrugated fabric, where the pattern is located in the transverse direction, so the fabric consumption for this model with a size of 42 and a height of 164 cm was 150 cm with a fabric width of 150 cm.

For the convenience of laying out the finished pattern, the required amount of fabric for the bodice was cut in advance. The fabric is folded right sides inward, cut to each other. The details of the shelves and backs are laid out on the fabric, taking into account the distance for allowances. The pattern is distributed so that the distance between the diagonal parts is equal to the width of the diagonal parts themselves. After that, the shelf and back are transferred to the fabric:

Then add allowances and cut out the shelf and back. Allowances for the bottom of the bodice and shoulder sections are: 1.5 cm, for side sections 1.5 - 2.0 cm, for necklines and armholes 0.5 - 0.7 cm.

Open skirts

The second part of the fabric will be the panel of the skirt for the dress. There is an assembly along the upper cut of the skirt, so no changes need to be made, since the skirt is a rectangle and has only one seam.

Preparing the dress for the first fitting

Assembly paving

To prepare the details of the dress for fitting, it is necessary to assemble along the shoulder seams, the bottom of the bodice and the upper cut of the skirt. To do this, two parallel machine lines are laid: the first at a distance of 1.0 cm from the cut, the second at the width of the foot from the first line. To get an even assembly, you need to pull both threads and pull the fabric to the desired size.

On the shoulder seams, the size of the assembly is equal to the width of the shoulder in the finished form.

On the bottom of the bodice and the top of the skirt - waist circumference. In this case, the assembly on the bodice and skirt should be distributed in the central part of the details. So that the details of the shelf and back do not diverge, they must be secured with hand stitches along the bottom, taking into account the allowance for the smell.

Basting dress details

Then connect the bodice with the skirt together. To do this, put the bodice into the skirt with the front sides inward and sweep.

When connecting, the seam on the skirt should be located on the left side, where the zipper will be sewn in. For the convenience of putting on the dress during fitting and for fastening, you need to leave part of the side seam from the armhole not swept.

Carrying out the first fitting

How to make the first fitting you will learn:

dress tailoring

Making changes after the first fitting and fitting

After the first fitting, all changes are made. Separate the bodice from the skirt for ease of tailoring. Stitch and overcast the side seams. Fold the details of the bodice in half, align the armhole and neck.

The seam on the skirt is processed in two steps: in the fastener section, the seam is ironed, and the seam itself is ironed.

When ironing seams in corrugated fabrics, do not move the iron, as with normal ironing. This will lead to the collapse of the folds-corrugation. Ironing should be done by slightly pressing the iron on the fabric and moving from place to place without holding the iron.

Neck trim with bias tape

Part of the neckline according to the model is processed with an oblique trim from a similar fabric. To do this, the area for cutting out the oblique inlay must be thoroughly ironed with an iron to smooth out the wrinkles. As a result, you will get a flat surface where you can cut out an oblique trim. Then, with the resulting inlay, frame the neckline of the shelf and back from the bottom of the bodice, to the level of the depth of the neck.

Do not forget that the bias trim is cut at an angle of 45 degrees and is 3.5 cm wide.

Cutting the lining

Open shelves and backs

Using the base pattern, cut out the lining of the dress. When cutting the lining, allowances for free fit are taken into account, they should not be too large, it depends on the extensibility of the lining fabric. Increases are made at the waist, chest and hips. Towards the bottom, the lining expands along the side lines. A chest tuck is designed on the shelf. The width of the allowances on the lining corresponds to the width of the allowances on the dress.

Then the lines are transferred to symmetrical sides. Treat darts and side seams.

The side seams are overcast in an iron. At the site of sewing in the zipper, the seam is not ground down, the sections are overcast and ironed.

Connecting the bodice to the skirt

Sweep and then stitch the bodice with a double stitch skirt, overcast the cut on the overlock from the side of the bodice. Remove the basting threads, including the second line for assembly. Iron the allowance slightly on the skirt.

Lining fitting

The lining is folded in the centers, the side seams are combined and chopped off with pins. Align all sections and fix with pins. The bodice of the dress is placed on top of the lining and changes are transferred along the armholes and neck.

Connecting the lining to the dress

Joining a dress with a lining at the neck

Combine the back of the lining with the back of the dress along the neckline, right sides inward and sew 0.5 - 0.7 cm. Process the neckline on the shelf in the same way.

To secure the seam, lay a machine fluff.

And fixed with an iron

Joining the dress with armhole lining

Overstitch the armholes of the dress with a seam width of 0.5 - 0.7 cm, put cuts on the roundings. The cuts should not reach the seam by 0.2 cm.

Turn the dress right side out, baste the piping along the armholes and iron.

Connection of shoulder seams

To connect the shoulder seams, put the shoulder seam of the shelf into the shoulder seam of the back, combine the sections and grind at the same time, connecting the shoulder of the lining and the dress.

Thus, from the front side of the dress and the lining, the cuts are not visible.

Press the seams gently

Inserting a hidden zipper

To come up with and sew a dress in the Greek style with your own hands, there are so many ideas invented by mankind that it remains only to choose the appropriate option. The main motive of such a dress is beautifully flowing folds intercepted by belts and ribbons.

Basics of the right combination

If, for example, you like the color of ivory, then you can choose the image of a modern Aphrodite for yourself, as in this photo.

The asymmetry inherent in the Greek goddess of love can be created in any way, for example, with the help of an exquisite decorative trim on the one-shoulder strap, as here.

Or you can simply make a flowing drapery on one shoulder in combination with a wide belt at a high waist. At the same time, it is desirable to decorate the belt with special luxury, you will get a delightful outfit for the bride, as in this photo.

If you combine ivory dresses with pearl or gold necklaces, bracelets, brooches, then the image of a Greek woman will immediately be in front of you.

Modern designers love to diversify antique dresses of various lengths, flounces, contrasting colors, sequins, beads, chains. The main thing is feminine dresses, unusually beautiful and romantic.

This video shows how to quickly sew a summer bright Greek dress.

There are many different models in this video based on the style in question.

The art of beautiful wrapping

Interestingly, it is this style that makes it possible to create a dress from a piece of fabric directly on oneself or on the customer of a Greek dress, as almost all fashion designers work. Because the classic Greek dress, or chiton, is a rectangular piece of fabric that ancient Greek women wrapped from left to right around the body and fastened on their shoulders with two buckles - brooches, decorated with rhythmic Greek patterns.

Here are some models of a dress that can be made without bothering to build a pattern from a suitable patch of flowing fabric.

You can designate your dress as belonging to the Greek style if you decorate a wide belt at the waist or on a line above the waist with traditional Greek ornaments. For example, "palmettes" - stylized drawings of palm crowns.

Also "meanders", "ionics" and others.

In the video below, an interesting option is how to form a Greek-style beach dress on yourself.

We select fabric

For the formation of elegant folds on the Greek dress, you must carefully choose the right fabric. Usually for an evening dress they take thin silk, chiffon.

For a summer dress, crepe de chine, cambric, gauze are well suited. Viscose staple and natural silk are also softly draped. The loose style of the dress will save you from the heat and hide figure flaws.

Several ways to create

There are times when you urgently need an evening dress in an interesting style, Greek, for example, but there is no suitable outfit in your favorite store. Do not waste time searching, it is better to master for yourself any of the methods proposed below, it will always come in handy in life! In some cases, even a pattern is not needed, you just need to have basic sewing skills.

Scarf dress

The easiest way to create a summer Greek dress is with fabrics with processed sections of a suitable color. We take 4 scarves and tie them, as in the picture.

We fasten the knots on the shoulders, decorate with a brooch, and tie a braided belt at the waist.

Two large scarves can be fastened in place, as suggested in the next sketch.

Here are the options for dresses made of scarves or coupon fabric:

Airy summer outfit

If you liked a light fabric, such as chiffon, then, without putting it off for tomorrow, you need to purchase it and sew yourself a flying dress on the floor, in which, like a Greek goddess, you can walk both along the seashore and along the city streets.

And to sew such a red dress, as in the photo above, you can also quickly and easily.

For work, you will need a piece of fabric with a length of 2 times your height and a width of 140 cm or more.

Here is a diagram of such a dress:

The manufacturing work is as follows: we fold the fabric in half, cut the neck to the depth we need. To get a drapery, we gather the shoulders and decorate the dress with golden ribbons and straps. Or you can sew a Greek dress according to this simple pattern:

Evening Dress

The next way to create a Greek dress is more complicated, you need to try a little and cut it out, adhering to the following scheme.

You should get such gorgeous holiday dresses.

For the top, chiffon or batiste is perfect, about 3.5 m by 1.4, and for the lining you can take knitted tulle 2.3 m by 1.5 m. In accordance with your size, you need to build a pattern on paper and transfer it to the fabric.

Here is another version of the antique evening dress.

Choose any metallic stretch fabric and use the pattern below to get started!

In this video, instructions for sewing a velvet evening dress with drapery.

How many variants of a Greek dress can you come up with from one piece of black fabric, as in the video below.

In conclusion, I would like to note that in your wardrobe you definitely need to have not even one, but several different styles and dresses for different occasions in order to be able to be supported by the spirit of the ancient goddesses and win the hearts of your beloved men!

Video on the topic of the article

These videos have a lot of interesting things about Greek dresses:

Situations when you urgently need a festive outfit are not so rare. It is not always possible to quickly pick up something suitable in the store, and it can be quite expensive. But if there is a sewing machine at home, the problem is solved by itself. To sew an evening dress, even a pattern is not required. Making a dress in the Greek style with your own hands is within the power of any woman who owns a little needle. Read about how it works in our article.

Models of Greek dresses

A do-it-yourself Greek dress differs from all others in its free cut and a large number of folds, which sometimes fit right on the figure. But styles can be different:

  • seamless;
  • with a seam in front;
  • with two seams on the sides;
  • with detachable bodice;
  • with a long neckline;
  • with a square or round neckline;
  • open shoulder.

Choosing a fabric

Before you sew a Greek dress with your own hands, you naturally need to choose what exactly to sew it from. Several factors influence this:

  • season;
  • model;
  • fashion trends;
  • your ability to sew;
  • availability of necessary equipment.

These considerations are taken into account when choosing the material for any dress. Greek is typical for summer, so light fabrics that fit perfectly in folds are preferable:

  • crepe de chine;
  • batiste;
  • chiffon;
  • thin silk;
  • gauze;
  • jersey;
  • polyester .

What to give preference to be cheap and not particularly troublesome? So:

  • The ideal material is, of course, knitwear. It has sufficient width, drapes beautifully and lays down in beautiful folds. But it needs a special needle. You can buy it at any sewing store.
  • Thin natural and artificial silk is also not bad, but it will be difficult for a beginner seamstress to work with such a fabric - it crumbles a lot and also slips.
  • You will need more gauze, because it is completely transparent, so it is better to make a dress in several layers. This, of course, is not a problem - the material is quite cheap. However, you can get out of the situation in another way - to sew a cover. But this will require additional time and material.

Dress with detachable bodice

You can also sew a dress in the Greek style with your own hands according to the pattern. If you master this model, making all the others will seem like a trifle.

For this style you need:

  • textile;
  • hidden zipper;
  • sewing machine;
  • threads that match the fabric in quality and color;
  • tape measure;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • pattern;
  • graph paper, tracing paper or other large format paper.

Taking measurements

Know your measurements better. Of course, if you sew a loose dress without a pattern, the number of measurements required will decrease dramatically. But for modeling patterns you need:

  • length of the product;
  • half bust:
  • semicircumference of the hips;
  • half waist.

Modeling a pattern

Before you sew a Greek dress with a detachable bodice, you will have to tinker a little with the pattern. Any one that can be used to sew a dress or a classic style blouse is suitable. It must match your size. It is most convenient to transfer the patterns of the shelves and backs to graph paper:

  1. Circle the patterns for the front and back, ignoring the tucks.
  2. Draw a chest line on the details of the shelf.
  3. Step back from it down 8-10 cm, draw a cut line parallel to it.
  4. Draw the same line on the details of the back.
  5. On the middle line of the shelf, mark the depth of the cut - this point should be just above the cut line.
  6. On the shoulder line, mark the width of the neck - for this you need to move the point, which is located at the base of the neck, 2-4 cm along the shoulder line.
  7. Connect this new point to the cutout depth mark.
  8. Connect the cutout width point with the end of the bottom of the armhole with a straight line.
  9. On the back, also mark the width of the cutout.
  10. Connect this point to the bottom of the armhole.
  11. Circle the patterns along the middle lines, cut lines, modeling lines.
  12. Cut out the details of the bodice.

Important! The skirt does not need to be modeled. It is cut simply from a single piece of fabric and is sewn only along the side seams.

Cooking details

On the panels of the skirt, it is better to leave the edges - this will somewhat reduce the labor costs for processing the seams. How you process the bottom depends on the material. If you are going to hem the hem, you need to leave the appropriate allowance. But, for example, some types of knitwear do not need to be hemmed at all - it is enough to process the sections with an overlock.

Important! The same should be done with the details of the knitted bodice, then there will be much less problems when assembling - in any case, you will not be afraid that a loop will go and an arrow will form on your magnificent outfit. So to start, overcast the neckline and shoulder bevel lines.

We start with the bodice

At this stage, you will need tailor's pins:

  1. Sew up the side seams.
  2. Try what you got.
  3. Lay and pin the folds along the shoulder seams - there will be few of them, only one or two on each shoulder, but they should be strictly symmetrical.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams, taking into account the folds.

Skirt

The details of the skirt are two rectangles in the entire width of the cut. It is better to cut them directly on the fabric. For this, all you need is to mark the length of the product from the bottom of the armhole to the cut of the hem on the edges. From above, where the bodice will be stitched, you need to leave an allowance of 1-1.5 cm.

Here's how it all goes:

  1. Think about whether you will have a skirt with or without side slits.
  2. If a cut is expected, mark its length from the bottom along the edges.
  3. Sew up the side seams.
  4. Lay the folds along the upper cut so that they are uniform, but at the same time that the top of the skirt is the same length as the bottom of the bodice to which it will be stitched.
  5. Baste the skirt to the bodice and see what you got.
  6. If you like how your dress fits, feel free to sew the details.
  7. After that, it remains only to process the cuts where you have not done it yet, and decorate your dress.

Important! Such a dress can be worn with a belt - if there is a long enough strip of fabric left, it will fit perfectly.

DIY Greek dress without a pattern

This is the easiest version of the dress. Even an inexperienced seamstress can do it, because in this case there is almost nothing to sew, and even more so, you don’t have to bother with modeling a pattern.

You need the most common tailor's accessories, only you need to take more pins - folds can be laid:

  • only on the shoulders;
  • on the shoulders and chest line;
  • on the shoulders, chest line and waist line.

Important! A thin flying fabric that easily forms folds is suitable. The wider the cut, the better. Materials with a width of 140-160 cm are quite suitable. In any case, you will need 2 lengths, plus 10 cm for the belt and other little things.

Here's how to sew such a Greek dress with your own hands:

  1. We fold the fabric in half, combine the edges (you can even sweep or chop them).
  2. Divide the fold line in half, put a point.
  3. From this point, we set aside the estimated width of the cutout - it is equal to the half-girth of the neck, plus another 2-3 cm in both directions.
  4. We decide where the cutout will be deeper - in front or behind. If on the back, the incision can be made in general almost to the waist.
  5. Draw a perpendicular down from the middle of the fold along the desired side.
  6. We mark on it the depth of the cut.
  7. We connect the resulting mark with the points of the width of the cutout.
  8. We cut the cutout - along the fold line between the points of the width and down to the depth.
  9. The dress is tailored.

Assembly

The assembly of such an outfit will be even easier than dresses with a bodice. But some operations are best done with an assistant. Actually, you only need to lay the folds, and this can be done during the fitting, and sew the side seams:

  • Mark the depth of the armhole on the edges - it should be the same on both sides.
  • Sew up the side seams.
  • Try on your creation.
  • Ask an assistant to lay the shoulder folds - they can be located towards each other or vice versa, but it is important that they are symmetrical.
  • Sew up the pleats.
  • Finish the cut.

Important! If you are sewing from knitwear, then you just need to sheathe it with an overlock. If the fabric is silk or cotton, hem 0.5 and 1 cm, and iron.

  • Work on the bottom.
  • The sleeves do not need to be processed, since the edges remain.

Important! If the cut is very wide, and the figure is slender, the side seams can not be sewn, it is enough to lay the folds on the shoulders, and the structure will only hold on to the belt.

Dress with a square or scoop neckline

It is sewn almost the same as the previous model. The only difference is in the way the cut is modeled and processed:

  1. In the same way, fold the fabric in half and connect the edges so that they do not move apart.
  2. Find the middle of the fold.
  3. Set aside on both sides the half-girth of the neck, divided by two, plus another 2-3 cm on each side.
  4. Draw a perpendicular to the middle of the fold.
  5. Set aside the depth of the cutout on it - in this case it will be equal to the same quarter of the neck circumference, plus 2-3 cm.

Option 1

For a semicircular neck, connect the resulting point with the cutout width marks with a smooth arc. In this case, it is very useful to make a cut in the middle of the back and insert a hidden zipper there.
