Types of door handles Door handle - an overview of models and selection rules. Knobs for wooden doors

When purchasing an interior door, it is impossible not to face the problem of choosing a door handle. Most buyers usually solve it pretty quickly - they “grab” the first “average” copy that comes across from the shelf at an affordable price. But this approach is fundamentally wrong. You can not treat the handle as a secondary element, because the ease of use of the door directly depends on its quality and ergonomics.

In addition, interior door handles are not just a design control tool, they are an eye-catching accessory that can both decorate the interior and spoil it. It's not for nothing that they say that beauty is in the details. Elegant and practical fittings are sure to emphasize the atmosphere and become an important note of the overall style of the room. But how to choose a handle for an interior door from an incredible range of models in stores? It's actually very simple. If you are familiar with the classification of these products, clearly understand the advantages and disadvantages of various options, and have an elementary sense of taste, the right decision will come by itself.

Priority Selection Criteria

There are a number of points that you need to pay attention to when choosing a door handle. Experienced Professionals Recommend:

  • first of all, check the quality of workmanship and reliability of the design (strength of color, whether there are any chips and scratches);
  • evaluate whether a particular model is pleasant to the touch. Tactile sensations are very important, because you will have to “contact” with the product daily;
  • look for fittings that best match the style of the interior and finishing materials and, of course, suitable for the door itself.

Note! The handle must match in color with the hinges and the lock;

  • take into account the location of the rooms and their functional purpose. For closely adjacent bedrooms and a hall, it is better to choose the same handles, but for an office and a toilet that are far from each other, you clearly need to look at radically different samples;
  • provide for the degree of load on the handle. Flimsy fittings on a powerful solid door will become unusable very quickly;
  • do not overdo it in the desire to be "original". Bulky and artsy handles in a small apartment with a banal renovation will look ridiculous.

Types of door handles

By type of construction, all door handles for interior doors are divided into:

  • stationary;
  • pressure - on the socket and on the bar;
  • rotary (nobs).

Stationary handles have a fairly simple device. They have no moving parts and are not connected in any way to the locking mechanism. The most popular of the stationary are ball-handles and staple-handles. The latter can have a wide variety of "styles" - starting from the traditional letter "P" and ending with complex broken lines. Stationary handles are usually used in "tandem" with roller latches, since by themselves these products are only designed to pull or push the door when opening and closing - they do not hold anything. Recommended for installation on massive doors; due to the high aesthetics of modern models, they are good as a decorative element.

Push handles consist of two L-shaped levers, which are connected by a rod passing through the door leaf. When the lever is pressed, this rod opens the latch latch. Such handles allow you to fully, tightly close the door. There are push handles on the socket and on the bar.

Pens-latches for interior doors on the socket(round or square base) combine a locking and decorative function. They are versatile and at the same time uncomplicated. The principle of their operation is elementary: when you press the handle, the latch “retracts” and allows you to open the door, when the “impact” stops, the latch returns to its original position and keeps the door closed. The height of the products, as a rule, is 5-5.5 cm, and the length is 10-12 cm. The main advantage of the models on the outlet is the ability to choose any locking mechanism for them at your discretion.

Handles on the bar, as a rule, are used for a complete set of locks with a latch and a latch. It is undesirable to buy such accessories separately from the locking mechanism, so later you can be tormented, looking for the right one. The handle-lock on the bar for an interior door is able to create additional protection for the room from unwanted "penetration". True, she can only stop a child or a grandmother, but such a primitive “barrier” is not terrible for a burglar. It is worth noting that such specimens have not been particularly popular lately, since they are significantly inferior in functionality to handles on a socket. Nevertheless, for a number of models on the bar, in particular, stylized antique, the demand does not fade away.

Nobs- rotary door handles - designed on the same principle as push handles, but the mechanism is driven not by levers, but by balls. The latch is opened here by turning the "knob" around its axis. Such fittings are more compact than lever ones, but not always ergonomic. For example, you cannot turn the ball with busy hands, while you can always press the lever with your elbow. Nobs are always carefully executed and presented in various decorative variations. Often they are equipped with a locking latch in the center of the ball. Rotary knobs are a sure-fire choice for many families with children as they are much safer than their push-pull counterparts.

Which is better to choose a door handle, depending on the shape and principle of operation, it is impossible to say for sure. It all depends on for what purposes and under what specific conditions they are installed. Want to bring a fantastic design idea to life? Feel free to take stationary Italian handles for interior doors - they are stylish, original and reliable. Do you prefer conciseness and minimalism? Stop your choice on the rotary model. Do you create a classic interior? The best option for you will be lever handles on the bar. Do you appreciate the harmonious combination of aesthetics and ergonomics in things? Handles on a square or round rosette will bring you maximum operating pleasure.

What are the accessories made from?

In addition to the form and principles of operation, door handles for interior doors also differ in the materials from which they are made. Wood, metal, plastic, glass - there are a lot of options, and each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

metal handles(brass, aluminum, steel, copper, silumin and other alloys) are the most durable and wear-resistant. Thanks to various coatings, they can both shine stylishly and radiate a soft, unobtrusive glow. Brass samples are especially popular - this is an ideal combination of price and quality.

Minuses : most metal pens are very cold to the touch; budget models with low-quality coating quickly lose their presentable appearance; handles made from inexpensive alloys can bend or even break with heavy use.

wooden handles- an excellent choice for solid wood and veneered doors. They are made from wood of various species, including valuable varieties. Such handles can be decorated with decorative inserts, inlays, carvings.

Minuses : categorically not suitable for doors to the bathroom and kitchen; models made of soft wood (pine, spruce) are not resistant to abrasion.

Glass handles- beautiful interior decoration. They are presented in a wide range and often boast an original performance.

Minuses : high price and fragility of the structure.

Plastic fittings- the most inexpensive and short-lived option, which, fortunately, is rarely used. Basically, they buy it for installation on the doors of utility rooms. There are models of plastic handles that imitate glass or stone.

Minuses : low quality, "losing" appearance.

Production cost

An exciting question for every buyer - how much does the fitting cost? The price of handles for interior doors depends on a number of factors:

  • manufacturer and location;
  • materials and technologies used in the manufacture of products;
  • construction type;
  • the name of the designer working on the creation of a particular model (if you purchase premium samples).

The most affordable are handles made of plastic, wood of "ordinary" species, aluminum, silumin. Brass products will cost a little more. Models made of stainless steel and bronze are traditionally the most expensive.

The nature of the finish of the material also directly affects the cost of the handles. For example, if the fittings are made of simple brass, then the price will be the same, but if the brass is finished in nickel, then we will talk about completely different “numbers”.

After acquiring interior doors, you will definitely have to choose the right fittings for them. Handles for interior doors differ in the type of construction, shape, size, method of operation, installation option and material of manufacture. Based on the wide range of products, it is very difficult to choose the right option. This article will talk in detail about the existing models and their distinguishing features.

When choosing handles for interior doors, you should be guided by certain recommendations of experts:

  • check the reliability of the design and workmanship: color strength, the presence of scratches and chips;

  • evaluate how pleasant the selected model is to the touch, since you will have to contact the product quite often;
  • choose fittings that will best match the interior design style of the room and are directly suitable for the door leaf;
  • the type and configuration of handles is recommended to be selected based on the functional purpose and location of the rooms;
  • take into account the degree of load on the product;

  • handles should be selected taking into account the array of the door leaf: for powerful doors, flimsy fittings will look ridiculous;
  • the configuration and design of the product must be in harmony with the general atmosphere of the room: artsy and bulky handles will look ridiculous in a small apartment with a simple renovation.

Helpful advice! The color of the door handle should be combined with the color of the lock and hinges of the leaf.

Handles for interior doors: varieties of products

The internal structure of the door handle depends on the type of construction. Unlike the way the product works, there are:

  • stationary;
  • pressure;
  • rotary.

A stationary or overhead handle is the simplest. With its help, you can open or close the door by pushing it in the desired direction. Such models are not equipped with latches, with the exception of roller options. They are purely decorative. They are installed mainly on furniture. It is also advisable to use for kitchen doors or interior units that are equipped with additional locking mechanisms.

Among stationary elements, pull handles and round door handles are very popular. The first option is represented by a wide variety of product configurations, ranging from a U-shape to broken lines. They are used mainly for massive doors.

Pens-balls are characterized by high aesthetics of modern models, which can be presented in various designs. Among them, we can distinguish roll-up handles made of two spherical elements and located symmetrically on both sides of the door. They are pulled together with a metal axis that goes through all the details. The height of the door handle is only 4-5 cm.

Installation of stationary handles does not require special skills. It is enough to fix the product with bolts in the right place.

To fix the door leaf in the frame, stationary accessories-holders can be equipped additionally:

  • a roller latch, represented by a roller or ball made of metal, which is fixed in the reciprocal hole when the door is closed and comes out when the handle is slightly pressed when it is opened;
  • a magnetic lock, represented by a metal bar on the door leaf and a magnet on the jamb, thanks to which a tight fixation is ensured.

Helpful advice! Fixed handles installed in pairs are the right choice for swing doors.

Lever handles for interior doors

The lever handle is represented by two L-shaped levers interconnected by a rod that passes through the door leaf. While pressing the lever, the rod allows you to open the latch. The design of the product includes a return spring for the door handle, which allows you to return the lever to its original position after the cessation of exposure to it. When using pressure devices, comfortable operation is ensured and full fixation of the door is achieved. Such devices are distinguished by reliability, noiselessness, durability and ergonomics.

The main disadvantage of the design is the likelihood of frequent touching of the lever with a bag or clothing during active movement around the house. Also, with frequent use of the product, the return spring may fail. You can buy this item for the door handle separately for 50 rubles.

Push handles can be mounted on a bar or on a rosette. Latch handles for interior doors on a rosette can be with a round or square base. They perform a decorative and protective function. Despite the fact that the products are universal, they have a simple principle of operation. When exposed to the handle, the latch retracts and the door opens. After the end of pressing the lever, the latch returns to its original position, which allows you to keep the door closed.

Products are made 5.5-6 cm high, 10-12 cm long. The main advantage of the push handle on the socket is the ability to choose any locking mechanism for it. This option is suitable for those who appreciate the harmonious combination of ergonomics and aesthetics in things.

Door handles on the bar are often used in combination with a latch or bolt lock. Thanks to this device, additional protection of the premises from unwanted penetration is created. Despite the fact that, in terms of functional qualities, the products are inferior to analogues on the outlet, antique-style products on the bar are very popular. This is an ideal option for interior design in a classic style.

Helpful advice! It is undesirable to purchase a handle and a locking mechanism separately, since in the future it will be difficult to assemble them.

Swivel door handles

Rotary mechanisms, or knobs, are round door handles for interior doors with a latch that opens due to the rotation of the handle around its axis. The locking latch is located in the center of the ball. Swivel products can be mounted on a socket. Here, not a fixing bar is used as a base, but a figured plate of round section, which gives the handle a more sophisticated and stylish appearance.

Despite the fact that such fittings are more compact, unlike lever ones, they will be less ergonomic. It will be difficult to open the doors with busy hands, which is possible when using pressure devices.

The design of the nobs is characterized by simple and light execution, represented by various decorative variations. This is the most suitable option for those who prefer minimalism and conciseness in the interior. Thanks to the streamlined design of the handle, which has an oval or round shape and does not contain corners or protrusions, the product is the safest, since there is no possibility of scratching or injury. Another significant advantage is the lower cost of the product compared to analogues.

Rotary handles in a modern interior

Despite the positive aspects, nobs have some disadvantages. Such mechanisms are much more likely to jam and break, which requires frequent repairs or complete replacement of the product. Therefore, it is important to own the question of how to remove the door handle of an interior door. Such problems can be avoided only after the acquisition of a high-quality and expensive product. When installing it, it is required to create a hole in the door leaf with a diameter of at least 5 cm, which will be difficult to hide after installing another type of handle in this place.

How to disassemble the door handle depending on the type of product

How to remove a door handle with a roller latch? Using a screwdriver, the fastening screws are unscrewed, the decorative trim is removed, the roller or ball is removed from the metal jumper. Next, the handle is removed from the reverse side, where the tetrahedral jumper is also removed.

Turnkey assembly kit built into the core

The process of removing the push-type handle is carried out using a single screwdriver or a hex wrench. The first step is to remove the pressure element. Next, you need to unscrew the screw, which is usually hidden in a recess in the bottom or side of the product. The element is removed from the axis. Then a decorative overlay is unscrewed, masking the main fastening in the form of screws, by unscrewing which you can pull out the internal mechanism with a rotary axial element.

To remove the door handle of interior doors with a latch or lock, the above procedure is followed. In addition to it, a plate is unscrewed from the end of the web, from which the locking mechanism is removed.

How to disassemble a round door handle rotary type? Work begins with the removal of the lining from the rotary round handle. Before this action, you must unlock the stopper that is in front of it. To do this, you need to use a special key that is included with the product. It is inserted into a special hole on the side of the handle. Next, pull the handle and remove it together with the cap, unscrew the exposed screws and remove the mounting plate. Then the entire mechanism is removed from the socket.

Installing the door handle on the interior door is carried out in the reverse order. A hole is preliminarily made in the door leaf, the dimensions of which correspond to the dimensions of the handle mechanism for interior doors.

Choice of handle latch mechanism

Manufacturers produce interior door handles with a latch of various designs, which ensures reliable fixation of closed doors. There are such types of mechanism:

  • falevy;
  • roller;

  • magnetic;
  • locking.

File mechanisms are installed for movable models, represented by rotary or pressure devices. The internal structure of the mechanism can be seen after disassembling the door handle of the interior door. Under the action of a spring, an oblique tongue enters the jamb groove when the door is closed. When it is opened, the tongue hides in the thickness of the door leaf. Thanks to this latch, you can securely lock the door and quickly open it without using a key.

The roller door interroom latch is used for all kinds of door handles. When the door closes, a spring-loaded ball or roller engages a groove in the door frame, holding the door in the correct direction.

Magnetic mechanisms are characterized by simple and silent operation. The design of the product includes two strong magnets: one is located on the jamb, the other is opposite it on the door leaf. Due to the fact that opening and closing doors is easy and smooth, this mechanism is considered the most comfortable to use.

Handles with a locking mechanism are represented by push models. The mechanism can be with one continuous plate or with separate overlays. The first option is used in the form of a latch and a latch, which is driven by a key. The second option is represented by an interior door handle with a lock, which is closed by an individual socket and installed at a certain distance from the handle.

What are the handles depending on the material of manufacture

Door handles can be made of metal, wood, plastic or glass. Each of the options is characterized by distinctive features. The design of the execution of handles from different materials can be seen in the pictures of interior doors.

The most durable and wear-resistant are metal handles. For their manufacture, steel, copper, aluminum, silumin, brass and other alloys are used. There are also exclusive models made using precious materials. Among them, brass products are especially popular because they combine good quality and reasonable cost. When using various coatings, the surface of the pen can be very shiny or have an unobtrusive soft glow.

However, metal handles have disadvantages. Products are very cold to the touch. With intensive use of an inexpensive alloy handle, it quickly breaks. Budget models have a low-quality coating, due to which the product quickly loses its aesthetic appearance.

Wooden handles are the most suitable option for veneered panels or solid wood doors. Products are made from various types of wood. There are exclusive models from valuable varieties. Such pens are often decorated with decorative carvings, inlays, metal or stone inserts. They are pleasant to the touch, durable and environmentally friendly. However, such products cannot be installed for doors to the kitchen and bathroom. Models made from soft woods such as spruce or pine are not abrasion resistant.

Glass fittings are an unusual interior decoration. Models are presented in a wide variety of original configurations and designs. The main disadvantages of glass handles are the fragility of the design and the high cost of products.

Plastic handles are budget and short-lived products. They are often installed on the doors of utility rooms. There are plastic handles with stone or glass imitation.

Note! Today you can buy door handles for interior doors, combined from various materials, which can become a highlight of the interior of the room.

Which is better to buy interior door handles

When choosing an interior door handle, you should also be guided by the cost of the product. The price of a door handle depends on the quality of the material, its decorative features and the manufacturer. To purchase a high-quality and durable product, you should familiarize yourself with the model range of products from well-known manufacturers.

Italian-made Morelli door handles are especially popular. Products are characterized by high workmanship, long service life, interesting design and affordable price. For the manufacture of handles, an alloy of aluminum, copper and zinc with the addition of magnesium is used, which makes it possible to obtain a material that is easier to mold due to the fact that it does not oxidize in air.

Equally popular are Archi door handles, which are made using a specially developed time-tested alloy. Products are characterized by increased strength, durability without losing their original appearance and a wide range of different configurations of construction and design.

Mandelli is known for its products, which are developed using a special technology. In addition, the manufacturer is the author of the reciprocating spring system of the lever. The company's catalogs contain a wide range of products from different materials with different types of mechanism.

The Italian company Palladium produces high-quality products with a variety of designs. Metal door handles for interior doors with a lock, which are distinguished by ergonomics and durability, are especially popular with the world brand.

Exclusive models, which are made according to specially designed sketches and can be made in a single copy, are produced by Linea Cali. The manufacturer Enrico Cassina faithfully copies the styles of different eras in their models. In the catalogs you can find pens from the Renaissance, the Middle Ages or the end of the 19th century. The world brand Apecs specializes in the manufacture of products in a simple minimalist design.

When choosing a handle for interior doors, you should consider the quality of workmanship, configuration, functionality and design of the product. This element should harmoniously fit into the interior of the room and be as convenient and durable as possible in further operation.

Installing door handles on interior doors: video

From the article you will learn:

A door that does not have a handle cannot be called comfortable and fully functional. The choice of a door handle should be given special attention, because the parameters of this small product determine how comfortable the use of the door structure will be.

To freely and easily open in any direction, you need to know what door handles are, what advantages each model has and how to install it yourself.

Types of handles in interior doors

Handles designed for interior structures are practically no different from models produced for installation in entrance doors. All these products have an identical design scheme and features. And only a few small nuances are worth noting separately.

First of all, we are talking about the material from which they are made, and secondly, there are slight differences in the mechanism and principle of operation.

Varieties of interior door handles:

  • Stationary Models. They do not provide interaction with the locking mechanism or latch. This type includes a whole mass of products, starting with staples that were widely used a century ago. An impressive list is completed by modern analogues of such products, produced in the form of figures of animals and people, balls, spheres and their geometric varieties. The main task of such a model is to ensure the convenience of using the door structure.
  • pressure. Modern modification, equipped with a latch. Pressing the handle causes the latch to move in the desired direction. The latch holds the door securely closed. This model is widespread and equally often installed on interior and entrance structures. Often, manufacturers implement this option in conjunction with a locking mechanism. Two subspecies of the product are produced - handles with a base in the form of a heel, in which point fastening is provided, and models equipped with an oblong bar designed to locate the keyhole.
  • Rotary knobs, often referred to as knobs. The principle of operation of this model is identical to the mechanical manipulations that make the handle-locks installed on interior doors work. In this case, the difference lies only in the features of the mechanical load. The latch is not driven by pressure, but by turning the handle. Usually these models are produced in the form of a ball, sphere or disk. Varieties are distinguished in the general group - samples equipped with a push-button or rotary latch position lock. Users do not always note the ease of use of both modifications.
  • Handles designed for sliding doors. The main distinguishing feature of this model is certain geometric parameters, due to which its elements do not extend beyond the borders of the door leaf. In this case, there is a clear resemblance to mortise products. Functions, subtypes and technical solutions resemble similar characteristics of other door handles. Manufacturers produce varieties equipped with a latch with a locking function, with an overlay on which there is a slot in the form of a keyhole, with different options for the opening mechanism. Basically, all the differences between come down to the difference in geometric shape and to the installation features.
  • Magnetic. One of the latest developments, which no longer resembles a handle, but a direct locking mechanism. The handle in this model serves to control a powerful magnet, which, moving in the right direction, securely fixes the door leaf in a given position. The device equally often uses handles with a rotary and push operating principle.

This is the main classification under which all existing types of door handles for interior structures fall. Some manufacturers equip their products with additional parts and functions. However, in fact, any of them can be attributed to one of the above types. For example, a number of manufacturing companies distinguish such a variety as handles for installation on metal-plastic doors. But, in fact, these models are ordinary pressure modifications.

Entrance door handles are predominantly made from strong, durable materials such as stainless steel. In contrast, models designed for interior structures are made from various types of raw materials. The "home" options are not subject to such stringent requirements as their "street counterparts", which are often operated in harsh weather conditions.

Therefore, manufacturers are practically unlimited in the choice of materials for the manufacture of interior door handles. The most common on the shelves are metal, plastic, wooden, glass, combined models. Here, the original, presentable design often comes first, as opposed to strength, durability and reliability.

The main types of door handles are as follows:

  • metal. For the manufacture of such products, various alloys are used, including brass, TsAM (aluminum, copper and zinc), silumin, etc. The mechanical load on the handles that are installed on interior door structures is minimal, and therefore such materials are ideal for the manufacture of door handles. Products made from such raw materials, in terms of their strength characteristics, are an order of magnitude ahead of all other models. However, it is worth noting that each material used has its drawbacks. For example, silumin has increased fragility. With intensive use, handles made from it break quite quickly.
  • Plastic. This is a budget option that cannot boast of outstanding technical characteristics or external data. The main advantage of plastic models of handles is their low cost. Therefore, they still find their consumers, despite the short service life and dubious aesthetic properties.
  • Wooden. Natural, natural materials have an outstanding aesthetic appeal and good technical performance. Wooden models of door handles are pleasant with tactile contact, they retain heat well and are in the price range affordable for many consumers. Among the shortcomings of the modification, it is worth noting the insufficient variety of forms. The number of types is limited by the capabilities of lathes. Usually such models are balls, discs or brackets. In the latter case, we are talking about a combination of wood with metal parts.
  • glass. The material captivates with its appearance. As a rule, glass handles look very impressive. One of the main drawbacks is fragility. If the handle is handled carelessly, it breaks easily. To increase the strength of the product, manufacturers prefer to combine glass with other materials. Often it is presented in a certain model only as decorative inserts that do not take on the main mechanical load.

Among the most popular options are combined handles designed for. Popular combinations are metal and glass, metal and wood. Such structures also have a significant drawback. They are short-lived due to the lack of effective technologies that would provide a reliable connection of individual elements from different materials into an integral product.

Choosing handles for interior doors

When choosing the right model, there are several important parameters to consider. If we make a comparison with the handles for the entrance doors, then the main role is played not by strength, but by design.

The main selection options are as follows:

  • Execution quality. When buying a product, it is necessary to test it for the strength of the connections between the individual elements. A well-made handle has no room for loose or loose parts.
  • Ergonomics. If the model is designed taking into account the physiological characteristics of the human hand, then it is convenient to use. Ergonomically designed products easily and naturally “fit” in the hand, they are pleasant to the touch and do not cause discomfort during operation.
  • Compatibility with the chosen interior style. When choosing a suitable model, it is necessary to pay attention to the style in which it is “aged”, its color and shape. It is important to observe the norms of harmonious unity of the handle with the door leaf, awnings and other fittings.
  • Identity with other similar products used indoors. For all rooms of the same house or apartment, you should buy the same door handles. For this reason, it is better to immediately purchase the right number of pens, because even in different batches of products of the same article there may be slight differences in appearance (as a rule, there is a slightly different shade).

It is important to remember that the purpose of the handle, first of all, comes down to the main task - to ensure maximum convenience in opening and closing the door. For the buyer, the main rule is to find the “golden mean” between the functional features of the model and its external data.

The handle for the front door should not only fulfill its function, but also complement the design of the door leaf. Since there are a large number of them on the market, the choice must be approached with great care.

The fittings for the front door differ in many factors:

  • operating principle;
  • appearance;
  • purpose;
  • material;
  • installation.

There are the following types of mechanisms:

  1. push-button;
  2. pressure;
  3. stationary;
  4. staples;
  5. on the plank.

Material

The following materials can be used in the manufacture:

  • iron;
  • tree;
  • glass;
  • aluminum;
  • brass;
  • stainless steel;
  • silumin;
  • TsAM (an alloy of zinc, aluminum and copper).

Most often, models made of wood, brass, TsAM or stainless steel are chosen for entrance doors. This is due to the strength of products, durability and high resistance to environmental influences. TsAM models are slightly less durable than brass devices. In everyday life, such a difference is almost imperceptible, and the price of the latter material is much higher.

To protect the handles for entrance doors from the effects of the external environment, to make the material stronger and improve its appearance, various coatings are applied to the fittings:

  1. polishing;
  2. brushing;
  3. oxidation;
  4. powder coating;
  5. polished chrome plating;
  6. matte chrome plating;
  7. gilding with varnish;
  8. anodizing;
  9. galvanizing;
  10. brass plating.

Popular are polishing, chrome plating and anodizing. Lacquer or paint should be avoided. Over time, this material cracks and falls off, which leads to corrosion of the metal.

Push-button, push and stationary

Push-button devices are a subspecies of lever handles. You can also come across such names as noba or knoba. They have a spherical handle. Since they do not have a lever, they open by turning the ball counterclockwise or clockwise. As a material for the manufacture of these fittings, brass is often used.

Products of this type are most often installed in interior doors. For entrance structures, ball-shaped handles without a latch are used. An exception may be the entrance doors to utility rooms.

Push devices have a latch latch that cuts into the door leaf. When you press the lever, it hides inside the structure, allowing you to gain access to the room. After the handle is returned to its original position, the latch retracts. Devices can be equipped with a lock or purchased separately from the locking block.

This model can be of 2 types:

  • with a solid overlay;
  • with separate pads.

The first type is used in conjunction with latch and deadbolt locks. When buying this type of device, consider:

  1. center distance between the center of the keyhole and the handle;
  2. lining width;
  3. keyhole shape;
  4. section of the profile pin for the handle.

When choosing a product with separate linings, there is no need to take into account the center distance. The handle can be installed separately from the locking mechanism.

Stationary products are not connected to the lock, they cannot be turned or pressed. They are designed to pull or push the door. The installation of such a handle is quite simple and consists in fixing it on the door leaf with self-tapping screws or tightening screws. These devices have a different appearance, but the most common are handle-brackets.

Since this product does not have a latch, experts recommend installing a separate roller mechanism. It will fix the door when the lock is open and prevent arbitrary swinging of the door leaf.

Pull handle

The handle-bracket is a common model of stationary products. It has a U-shape and is attached to a wooden or metal door. It does not have a deadbolt or latch. Their main advantage is considered to be the simplicity of design. This avoids wear on the latch or breakage of the lever due to excessive pressure. Another advantage is the different material of manufacture. It can be made independently from wood, decorated with carvings or patterns.

On the bar

This product is a kind of pressure structures. If the device is completed without a lock, then a handle on a bar with an external lining can be supplied. The mechanism and the locking block can be made by different manufacturers. The main condition will be compliance with a single design. Some handles have a turning mechanism on the inside that does not allow the door to be opened from the outside with a key. If the device is equipped with a lock, you need to pay attention to its class and quality.

Features of handles for metal doors

The following two types are most often used as a door handle on a metal front door:

  • stationary;
  • pressure.

Since a metal door is heavier than a wooden one, the handle must be sized for its weight. This is important to consider when choosing the material from which the handle is made and how it is attached. In most cases, products for wooden and metal door leaf are the same. They differ only in the way they are installed.

Principle of operation

All door handles work in the same way. So, knobs and mechanisms on the bar have a latch. The former hide the bolt inside the canvas when the handle is turned in a circle, and the latter set the latch in motion when the lever is pressed. Products without moving mechanisms work on the principle of "push-pull". Significant differences in the principles of operation are available only in locks.

DIY installation

Almost all front door handles can be installed independently. This requires some tools and basic skills in working with wood or metal.

You will need the following tools:

  1. pencil;
  2. ruler and tape measure;
  3. electric drill;
  4. self-tapping screws or coupling bolts;
  5. screwdriver or wrench;
  6. drills of the required diameter.

Height selection

The standard height of the product is 100-105 cm from the floor. If the owners are tall or short, you can install the mechanism at any other height. Convenient is the position of the handle, in which it does not interfere with opening the lock with a key. Most often this is the level of the belt or a little higher.

Mounting the mechanism with a lock

At the plastic front door, you can only replace the handle. Installing it yourself is quite difficult, without special knowledge and skills. Otherwise, the glass unit may be damaged.

To install a door handle with a lock in a wooden door, you must:

  • Mark the position of the lock on the door leaf. Do this from the end of the door, where the locking mechanism will be placed. It must be strictly centered. Also mark the holes for the handle and the larva. Sometimes a special template is used.
  • With a drill of the appropriate diameter, a hole is drilled from the end, which should match in size with the height of the lock. The depth is equal to the width of the locking mechanism. To do this, put a marker on the drill and make holes as close to each other as possible. The drill must be held perpendicular to the door leaf and the floor.
  • The edges are trimmed with a chisel and the groove is shaped. Sandpaper clean all places.
  • Drills of the required diameter make holes for the lock cylinder and the handle.
  • The lock should fit snugly into the recess. A faceplate is applied to it and fixed with screws or nails. If necessary, deepen the notch with a chisel so that the plate is flush with the end.
  • Installation of the handle and larvae. To do this, install a square pin and screw the lining.
  • Mount the back plate. To do this, a 5-7 mm deepening is made with a chisel in the loot, and a plate is placed on top. Attach it to small nails.

Replacing latch devices

To replace door devices with a latch, it is necessary to select the appropriate mechanism. The main condition is the coincidence of the cross section of the square of the handles. The rod may be slightly larger, but not smaller, because the device must be balanced and firmly fixed.

To dismantle the mechanism, unscrew the screws of the front plate, which presses the latch. Then remove the strips from the inner and outer handles, unscrew the clamping screw. Remove the square and pull out the latch handle, install a replacement by following these steps in reverse order.

Installation in sliding doors

For sliding doors, the device consists of two parts:

  1. pressure product;

The first part is mounted according to the same principle as the product with a latch. To install a mortise device, you must:

  • Mark with a pencil on the second half of the door its position and dimensions.
  • A hole is drilled along the edges with a pen to a depth of 12-14 mm. Make additional indentations from top to bottom.
  • With a chisel, the groove is given the necessary shape. This can be done with a hand saw.
  • Insert the insert and fix it with screws on both sides.

Installing Stationary Views

Installation of stationary products is quite simple. To do this, mark the position of the device on the door leaf, attach the bar to the mark and fix it with self-tapping screws. If screws are used for fastening, make through holes in the places of their installation. Then thread the screws on one side of the handle, insert them into the holes, apply the second product and fix it tightly.

Repair manual

The sticking handle should be lubricated with oil or other special liquid. The cause of the breakdown may be the ingress of dust or dirt between the moving mechanisms. If the handle falls off, you need to remove the retaining ring. In most cases, it is bent or broken. Then it is necessary to replace it, since the old one is no longer serviceable. If the four-sided clamping screw breaks, the entire mechanism must be changed.

Door hardware of any kind can be repaired, and repair recommendations are easy to follow on your own.

In most cases, the interior door handle comes with the door itself, and the choice is limited to the range of fittings that the manufacturer uses. But even in this case, you need to know what they are. And even more so this knowledge is necessary when replacing the door handle.

Overhead handles for hinged wooden interior doors

The easiest to install are the so-called handle-brackets, holding on to which you can open or close the door. The main function is to provide the opportunity to pull the door towards you (to push it away from you, the handle, in principle, is not needed). But the simplicity of the functionality does not mean the limitations of forms and style solutions.

Here are examples of "Soviet constructivism" - nothing superfluous and a complete lack of decor:

And since such pens are still in demand, its only difference from that era, and to some extent “decoration”, is the coating with modern hammer paint. They fasten such a handle directly to the canvas with four screws, and put it mainly on inexpensive paneled doors.

Modern models are much more attractive in form and decor. For example, such an Art Nouveau handle will serve as a real decoration for an interior door:

Even a simple rectangular "bracket" can be made attractive by adding an engraving to the bracket itself and attaching it to a trim strip. Like this classic style pen:

There are also overhead handles with a hidden fastening, which, even for a simple form, will only improve its decorative qualities. They are fastened in pairs, opposite each other, on two studs, for which through holes are drilled in the door leaf.

The only drawback of the overhead handle is the lack of a latch. This may affect if the door frame has lost its vertical. Moreover, such a loss does not necessarily occur due to poor-quality installation of the box - any house is subject to shrinkage and sediment (and wooden ones also shrink). And so that the door does not spontaneously open (or close), clamps are added to the overhead handles, which consist of two parts. The main part of the mechanism with a roller or ball is cut into the end of the canvas, and the counterpart is into the box.

Lever handles for wooden swing doors

Most interior door handles have a movable handle that actuates the latch. That is, with the help of a handle, the door is not only opened or closed, but also fixed in the door frame.

The simplest push model with a conventional latch assembled looks like this:

In addition, such a handle can also have a lock function. The locking mechanism can be actuated in two ways - either from inside the room using a rotary knob:

or outside with a key.

And although the larva is arranged on the principle of a disk lock, its degree of secrecy is minimal. And the lock itself does not protect against breaking the door, but simply provides protection for the personal space of the owner of the room.

"Responsibility" for aesthetic properties, like the previous type, falls mainly on the handle: metal, wood, glass, porcelain ... There are even with rhinestones.

Such handles also have differences in the form of a decorative lining. In addition to the round rosette, as in previous models, they can be equipped with oblong-shaped overlays.

Moreover, this form of lining allows you to hide two holes in the door under it: the upper one for the latch drive handle, the lower one for the handle and the lock cylinder.

Knobs for wooden doors

The word "knob" comes from England. A narrow translation of a noun is a pen, a bump, a head. But there is also a “technical” translation - a round doorknob.

The simplest knob without a latch mechanism can be considered a classic interior door. Similar handles made of wood or plastic were also produced by the Soviet industry.

Now most of these models are equipped with a movable head and a latch. And they belong to the rotary type.

Like push knobs, round rotary knobs can have a simple latch.

But if they have a handle on the inside for fixing the latch, then on the outside they are equipped with either a key cylinder or a screw for a flat-head screwdriver to force the latch to unlock.

Sliding door handles

If the sliding door moves parallel to the wall, then overhead handles are also suitable for it. This is exactly what full glass sliding doors are equipped with.

But wooden models, regardless of whether they “hide” in a cassette in the wall or move along the wall, are equipped with a special type of handles without a protruding handle. They are embedded in the door leaf.

There are similar simple handles for cassette glass doors.

In addition, wooden sliding interior doors can have lockable handles.

Features of handles for interior glass doors

We have already mentioned two options for handles for glass doors. In addition to overhead and mortise, they also have knobs. For example, these:

If the glass door needs to be fixed or locked, then the latch and lock mechanism cannot be embedded into the door leaf. Therefore, for these cases, overhead models of handles are produced - with a latch:

or with a latch and lock.
