He is given one last chance - he needs to find a person who will agree to die for him. Thanks to his believing wife, the protagonist learns that Jesus died for him. It takes place around Christmas.

I will tell you a story that happened over 2,000 years ago. This is the story of how the son of God Jesus Christ was born on earth. His mother was the girl Maria. From a young age until her girlhood, Mary had to live at the temple. She was raised there for 12 years. Having reached the age of majority, the girl had to leave the temple.
