Pedagogical experience-19 years

We find a vinyl record of a suitable size. We wash the label. It is better to take the plate, which has a white center.

In a store for creativity, in or from a watchmaker, we purchase a clock mechanism.

The standard kit includes:

Clockwork

3 hands (hour, minute, second)

Center nut, washer

Optional wall hanging loop

We prime the plate with white primer. I have soil (gouache):

We make the background of future watches: mix the paint, apply it to the plate with a brush or sponge. We dry.

Cut out the motif with scissors from a napkin.

You can just cut off the edges.

Glue on PVA:

Put a napkin on the plate

Top well missed PVA, diluted with water

With fingers or a brush, they kicked out all the bubbles from under the napkin, from the middle to the edges

Dry the surface (you can use a hairdryer)

In the process of work, we sealed the hole in the clock with a napkin - carefully cut a hole. Then we insert large scissors into the hole and turn it several times to increase the diameter of the hole (then the clockwork will pass without difficulty).

We cover with varnish: at least 3 layers. Draw with a contour or glue the numbers. (if the clock is big enough - can be bought at a hardware store)

    We insert the clock mechanism, put a flat washer, tightly tighten the nut on top. If your watch mechanism is equipped with a loop, it must be attached to the back of the plate. That is, the order will be as follows (if stacked): mechanism - loop - plate - washer - nut.

If necessary, paint the arrows in a contrasting color with a sponge (so that the arrows do not get lost on the clock). We dress the hands: first the hour, then the minute, we put the second hand on top of the pin. The hour and minute hands must be firmly seated on the stem. You are unlikely to be able to confuse the order, since the holes in the arrows are different in size.

We insert the battery. We hang the clock on the wall.

What I like the most is that the clock can be made very quickly (no more than 4 hours for the whole job if you use a hairdryer), simply and, by the way, from a large number of different materials.

As a basis, you can use old discs, a primed canvas, a thin wooden palette. Clock mechanisms can be bought, or you can simply pull them out of an old wall clock or alarm clock. And how many decoration options there are!

Currently, the art of decoupage is very popular. It is not surprising, because this activity not only calms, distracts from the daily hustle and bustle, but also has an aesthetic and functional purpose. Today we will analyze the technique of decoupage watches.

Clock decoupage technique step by step

If earlier it was not easy to find templates and materials for decoupage of watches, now they are in abundance in any book or special store for creativity. The range is impressive - dials, stencils, hands and other accessories. Therefore, even beginners can master the newfangled technique, and step-by-step instructions with examples in the photo will greatly facilitate the task.

Cooking a stencil

So, the blank that you purchased in advance in the department for creativity needs to be prepared: degrease if the watch is plastic, or sand it if it is wooden.

Create a background

Choose a style for the background image, depending on the interior and your preferences. Glue the picture to the base. You can use PVA glue diluted with water, or special decoupage glue. It is important to do this very carefully so that there are no wrinkles. Next, dry the workpiece, cover with acrylic varnish and dry again. And so we repeat 3 times.

Choose a style

Today, the most popular is decoupage in the styles of Provence, “Hollywood” and vintage (antique).

If the directions of vintage and Provence are somewhat similar to each other, then the Hollywood style is their complete opposite. It is characterized by the following:

  • color contrasts that stand out clearly from the background. The most commonly used colors are red, black, white, blue;

  • a lot of glitter, an abundance of rhinestones;
  • images of famous Hollywood stars, preferably the very Golden Era of Hollywood - Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, etc. In this case, you get a Hollywood style inspired by a retro atmosphere.

Decoupage of the dial

Of course, you can find a ready-made watch face in a special shop, but it’s much more fun to make it yourself. Figures are easy to make from different objects - it all depends on the imagination and, of course, the chosen style for decoupage watches. So, for example, in the style of Provence, wine corks, dried lavender sprigs, etc. are perfect as a dial.

How to make an exclusive retro watch on a record?

A music record is a great option for a clock stencil. The decoupage technique on a vinyl record is identical to that described above. However, there are still some nuances here:

  • prime the plate with white paint, let dry;
  • for a picture, it is better to take special napkins designed for decoupage. We tear off the two lower layers and apply only the upper one to the plate. We apply glue on top of the napkin with a synthetic flat brush. After drying, cover the workpiece with varnish. Let it dry again and apply a layer of varnish again.

Note: use special glue and decoupage varnish.

  • making markings for the future dial. To do this, you can use shells, wine corks and other items;
  • we apply at least three layers of acrylic varnish on the watch;
  • Glue the sticker on the back of the plate with cardboard. Then we make a hole in the center and glue the mechanism itself. Fasten the arrows and insert the batteries.

Exclusive retro watch is ready! It is also convenient to make them because the center for the arrows is already marked. But keep in mind that the printing round white sticker overlaps quite difficult. It is better to choose the option with a red sticker.

Clock decoupage is a great gift idea

By the way, a vinyl record watch can be an excellent original gift for a close friend who is fond of music. It's a great idea to use a photo of his favorite artist or band as a picture.

Also, for any holiday, you can make a themed clock, which will be a great option for a gift. On the eve of the New Year, having created such a masterpiece, you will not “puzzle” what to give to your dear person. To the above technology, you need to add just a few bright details:

  • make a frame from pine or spruce branches, which can then be easily removed;
  • for the image, any Christmas or New Year motifs will go: angels, Santa Claus, candles, snowmen, snowflakes, deer, etc .;
  • Figures of the dial can be drawings of Christmas balls or snowflakes.

Moreover, the stores also sell ready-made bases for decoupage New Year's watches.

Spectacular watches can be made for Valentine's Day, and for March 8th. In this case, the style of Provence or vintage will come in handy. Having shown your imagination, try to create something beautiful or use a ready-made detailed master class with examples in the photo.

Master class decoupage clock “Vintage roses”

Vintage style conquers with its comfort and atmosphere of the past years. Antique watches will be a great addition to the interior, will bring a romantic touch to the house.

For decoupage, prepare:

  • watch blank (diameter 30 cm);
  • embossed acrylic paste;
  • acrylic primer;
  • transparent modeling gel;
  • acrylic paints: pistachio, white, natural umber, peach;
  • glue for decoupage;
  • drying retarder;
  • rice card with notes (letters) and roses;
  • dial stencil;
  • acrylic matte varnish;
  • clockwork;
  • palette knife, brushes.

Sequence of work:

1. We apply acrylic primer to the workpiece in a uniform thin layer.

2. For a whiter and smoother surface, it is better to sand it with sandpaper, and then cover with another layer of acrylic primer.

3. Create a colored background. We use 3 shades: pistachio, peach and gray-beige (dilute white paint with a drop of umber). We apply each of them with a sponge in a blurry spot, gently layering the colors around the edges.

4. So that translucent light roses do not get lost on the artistic background, tint the motifs with undiluted white paint on the other back.

5. Using decoupage glue, glue the torn pieces of rice cards. Immediately musical fragments for the background, and then the main drawing with roses.

6. Soften the borders of the fragments, unite the background. To do this, take a gray-beige neutral tone, the same as in the background. You need a little paint to lightly powder the edges. In the process of work, for lightness and greater transparency, it is better to add a little drying retarder to the paint.

7. To create a relief dial, using a palette knife, apply a relief thin paste through a stencil. Do not try to perfectly level the surface, leave it with traces of strokes - such a texture will look interesting in the process of patination. Once the paste has been applied, remove the stencil and allow the relief to dry.

8. Before proceeding with patination, for additional protection of the decorative layer, cover the watch with acrylic varnish in one layer. Leave to dry.

9. A transparent modeling gel will help to give volume to roses. You need to apply it with strokes using a palette knife. The gel should dry completely, until transparent.

10. Patination will enhance the embossed effect of roses and the dial, help to age the surface. To do this, dilute acrylic paint with natural umber color to a consistency similar to milk with water, and add a drop of retarder. The resulting composition is applied to the surface with a brush so that it falls into all the grooves of the relief.

We also cover the edges of the watch with a patinating compound, wipe off all unnecessary and let the watch dry completely.

12. The final touch is covering the watch with a layer of matte acrylic varnish. It is advisable to apply varnish in two layers with intermediate drying.

Currently, do-it-yourself clock decoupage has gained immense popularity! This is not surprising: in the age of stress, sometimes you want to do something for the soul, and if it still has a functional and aesthetic purpose, then this hobby is simply doomed to success!

Clock decoupage technique

If earlier it was difficult to get decoupage materials and templates, now they are available in abundance in any bookstore or department for creativity. In them, you can easily purchase stencils, dials, blanks, hands, accessories or other attributes for decoupage watches. Therefore, this newfangled hobby is an acceptable option for beginners.

Consider the technique of decoupage watches with your own hands in stages.

  1. Stencil preparation. So, you have purchased a watch blank in advance in a needlework store (as in the photo).
  2. The surface of the workpiece should be prepared in advance: sand if the watch is wooden or degrease if it is plastic.
  3. Create a background image, as in the photo. You can choose any style depending on your preferences or the interior features of the room that you want to decorate with a future masterpiece.
  4. We glue the selected picture onto the workpiece (see photo).
  5. Advice! Torn edges are easier to mask, so it's better not to cut out the image, but simply tear it off the paper with your hands.

    You can glue the picture on the template either with PVA glue diluted with water, or with special decoupage glue. The main thing here is to act carefully, avoiding wrinkles in the picture. After that, the workpiece of the future clock should be dried and covered with acrylic varnish, after which the workpiece should be dried again. Repeat this pattern three times.

    This technique is described in more detail in the video at the end of the text.

    Choose a style

    Before proceeding directly to the decoupage of watches with your own hands, you should decide on the style of the future masterpiece. Now the most popular decoupage options are:

  • provence;
  • vintage or "antique";
  • "Hollywood".

First you need to choose the room in which you plan to hang your future masterpiece. For example, if this is a kitchen, then some kind of romantic sketch, or a Hollywood-style clock, will look out of place in it. On the contrary, Provence or vintage style clocks will fit perfectly into the interior of most kitchens.

Perhaps the Provence style is one of the most common and understandable. If the directions of Provence and vintage are somewhat reminiscent of each other, then the Hollywood style is fundamentally different from them. So, it is characterized by the following nuances:

  • Use as the main following colors: black, red, white, blue. Whatever colors you choose, they should, if possible, contrast with each other and stand out from the background.
  • Maximum brilliance, the use of all kinds of rhinestones is welcome.
  • Using images of famous Hollywood actors, preferably from the Golden Era of Hollywood: Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, etc. In this case, you will partially get a retro style.

All styles are suitable for beginners. These options can be found by watching the video at the end of the text.

Features of decoupage of the dial

The finished dial can be freely bought in the store, but it is much more interesting to make it yourself. So, the numbers on the clock can be made almost from the first objects that caught your eye. It all depends on your imagination and, of course, on the style of decoupage watches.

Let's say you chose the Provence style. Then for the dial it would be appropriate to use corks from wine bottles, dried lavender branches, soap in the form of small hearts. In addition, it is not necessary that there are numbers on the dial: it is enough just to mark the divisions.

The idea for the clock on the Pink Floyd record.
It is also convenient to make a watch on a plate because the center of the dial for the hands is precisely marked. However, it should be remembered that the round printed label in the center is difficult to "overlap" if it is white. It would be more practical to take a plate with a red sticker for the base.

If decoupage of ordinary wall clocks may seem boring, then we have saved up another original option for you - decoupage of clocks on a vinyl record. The technique of such decoupage is not much different from that described above, but it has its own characteristics:

  • First you need to prepare the plate, primed it with white paint. Let her dry for a while.
  • To apply the picture, it is better to use special napkins for decoupage. We tear off the two lower layers and apply only the upper one to the plate. With a flat synthetic brush, apply glue on top of the napkin. Let it dry, and then cover our workpiece with a layer of varnish. After drying, apply varnish again.

Attention! You need to use special varnish and glue for decoupage.

  • We make the markup of the dial. To do this, you can use wine corks, shells and any other items that have enough imagination.

Advice! Apply the paint with a dishwashing sponge.

  • We cover the clock with at least three layers of acrylic varnish.
  • Glue the sticker on the back of the plate with cardboard. We make a hole in the center and glue the clock mechanism. We attach the arrows, insert the batteries.

The original watch is ready!

1. Find a vinyl record of the right size. We wash the label. It’s better to take the record with a white center (it’s simply unrealistic to kill the red one with white :))

2. We buy a clock mechanism in a craft store, online store or watchmaker.

The standard kit includes:

Clockwork

3 hands (hour, minute, second)

Center nut, washer

Optional wall hanging loop

3. We prime the plate with white primer from a can. I have soil like this(alkyd, universal):

You can simply paint the plate with white acrylic paint with a sponge, however, with a spray primer, adhesion to the surface will be better and it will be easier to work further. We dry.

4. We make the background of the future watch: mix the paint, apply it to the plate with a sponge. We dry. (I applied a translucent layer of gold acrylic).

5. Cut out the motif from the decoupage card. Glue on PVA or decoupage glue:

Smeared the surface of the plate with glue

Wet decoupage card

Put the card on the glue

Top again well smeared with glue

With fingers or a brush, they kicked out all the bubbles from under the card

Dry the surface (you can use a hairdryer)

I used Decomania cards: “Decalcomania “Richelieu” and a decoupage card on rice paper.

How to transfer the napkin to the surface (manufacturer's instructions):

1. In a capacious container filled with water, lower the decal sheet and leave for about 5 minutes.

2. We take out the wet sheet and let the water drain in a vertical position, controlling the process of peeling the pattern from the paper base.

3. Using the sliding method, we put the pattern down on the base and separate, by folding, the top layer of paper.

4. When the drawing is translated, use a spatula (flat spatula) to get rid of air bubbles by running it over the superimposed drawing.

5. Dry with a cloth swab, soaking it with excess water.

6. After drying, varnish.

We stick rice paper on the principle of working with a regular decoupage napkin.

6. Varnish: at least 3 layers. We draw with a contour or glue plastic numbers. (if the clock is large enough, you can buy numbers for the front door at the hardware store)

7. If in the process of work we sealed the hole in the clock with a decoupage card, we carefully cut the hole. Then we insert large scissors into the hole and turn it several times to increase the diameter of the hole (then the clockwork will pass without difficulty).

8. We insert the clockwork, put a flat washer, tightly tighten the nut on top. If your watch mechanism is equipped with a loop, it must be attached to the back of the plate. That is, the order will be as follows (if stacked): mechanism - loop - plate - washer-nut.

If there is no regular loop, you can make an impromptu replacement: glue two loops on the “Moment”, and then tie a rope or wire between them.

9. Insert the battery. We hang the clock on the wall. Enjoy :)

Keep examples for inspiration (found online).

So, we decided to transform the clock. It is not difficult, and the result will be appreciated by both home and guests. Let's decide right away in which room the decoupage clock will be located which we will do. It depends on which figure we stop. Romantic pictures that would be appropriate on the clock for the bedroom will not quite organically "fit" into the interior of the kitchen.

By the way, about the pictures. Where can you get them, you ask? There are several options:

  • three-layer napkins with an original, interesting pattern;
  • pictures for decoupage from the Internet;
  • special decoupage cards and rice paper (sold in craft stores)
  • photos (but they will have to be kept in water for a long time before sticking).

Decoupage technique for beginners

For those who doubt whether he will master the decoupage technique, we recall that it is based on a simple application. The only trick is that you need to stick it on the surface so that they merge together.

Consider that the experiment with watches is a decoupage master class for beginners. Following the plan, even a beginner will be able to create a small creative feat with his own hands.

The first step is surface preparation. Wooden blanks for watches can be purchased at needlework stores. They must first be sanded, if the surface is plastic, wipe it with a degreaser.

Wooden clock blanks for decoupage

The second step is making the background. You have several alternatives: the surface can be painted corny, you can artificially age, you can stick the same napkin or rice paper as a background.

The surface is painted with white acrylic paint.

The third stage is the direct gluing of the picture. First, we carefully cut it out along the contour or simply tear it out with our hands (this is sometimes even better, because torn edges are easier to mask).

We will glue either with PVA glue diluted with water, or with special glue for decoupage. Both of these options are quite acceptable: our main task is to prevent even the slightest wrinkles when gluing. For the first time, rice paper is an ideal choice, with it you can not worry about bumps.

After the gluing process, the surface is dried. Then you need to cover it with acrylic varnish and dry again. This pattern should be repeated three times.

And an ordinary plate can turn into a watch, decoupage on a plate is done in a similar way. It will be more difficult only to drill a hole for the clockwork itself.

It should be noted that even though decoupage looks incredibly beautiful on miniature things, but in the case of watches, the decor option for large watches will be the most spectacular.

Vinyl records are good blanks for a variety of creative activities. Many people use them as a basis for a panel, but the plates are also quite suitable as a watch base.

All that is required is:

  • 1 vinyl record
  • decoupage napkin
  • glue for decoupage
  • acrylic paints
  • decoupage varnish
  • scissors
  • brushes
  • clock mechanism with hands
  • wine bottle corks, pebbles, shells, beads, buttons, etc. instead of numbers

The surface of the plate must be primed with white paint. In order for the pattern of the napkin to be expressive and bright, the base must be light. The layer must dry. By the way, it is better to apply the paint with a sponge for washing dishes.

Next, we cut out fragments from napkins (for small details, use nail scissors). You need to apply only the top layer, so we tear off the bottom two. On top of the napkin itself, apply glue with a flat synthetic brush. Glue very carefully, smooth the bubbles with your fingers or a brush. The glue dries up - we apply varnish, then another layer after the next drying.

The finished clock must be covered with at least three layers of acrylic varnish (each must dry).

Before gluing the clockwork, you can glue the label on the back of the plate with cardboard, make a hole in the center with scissors, glue the clockwork on the same Moment Crystal glue, attach the hands, insert the batteries and the clock is ready!

Now you know how to decoupage vinyl records, nothing complicated!

Clock-Palette

To make a watch in the form of a palette, we need the following materials.
