Using a twin needle in a sewing machine. Sewing machine needles - classification and marking, how to choose for different types of fabrics and leather

The twin needle can be installed in any zigzag sewing machine. The main thing you should pay attention to before buying a twin needle is the width of the hole (slit) of the needle plate and the distance between the needles.

How to sew, and how to use a twin needle, how to thread two needles at the same time? The threads are threaded in the same way as with one needle, only two will be used instead of one spool. And both threads will pass through the same upper thread tensioner.

The use of a twin needle increases the capacity of your machine and makes finishing double stitches easier. In addition, when sewing knitwear, you can imitate the stitching of a cover stitch machine. But more often than not, double needle indispensable when sewing clothes with double stitching. Decorative topstitching on jeans, patch pockets, details on men's shirts, etc. you can sew evenly and neatly with just one stitch with a twin needle.

1. How to use the twin needle

How to use a twin needle? Just like with a regular needle, however, you need to correctly thread both upper threads and be sure to loosen the tension on the lower one (in the bobbin). The lower thread in the bobbin will be used simultaneously by the two upper threads, "unfolding" between them in a zigzag pattern and therefore it must be loosened.
You also need to loosen the tension of the upper threads, otherwise the line will tighten and even break. Be sure to adjust the tension of all threads well, and use elastic and thin threads if possible. And do not forget that for the formation of a high-quality stitch, the lower thread must be thinner by a "number".

2. Twin needles are not suitable for all sewing machines

Twin needles can only be used on machines with a zigzag stitch. Lockstitch sewing machines like Podolsk, as in this photo, are not designed for such needles. The needle plate of such machines has one round hole, and the use of a double needle requires a narrow and wide gap, which is also necessary for sewing a zigzag stitch. In addition, additional thread guides and a stand for the second spool are also required.
If you are going to install a twin needle in a Seagull sewing machine, pay attention to how the needle enters the hole in the needle plate when it sews a straight line. The needle must pass exactly in the center of the needle hole. If there is an offset from the center, the twin needle may break.

3. For the second thread, you need an additional pin for the spool

Modern sewing machines Janome, Brother, Juki and many others have two stands for spools, as well as paired threaders and thread guides, into which the upper threads are threaded separately.
Each reel must be mounted on a separate pin (reel holder), often for this you need to install an additional rod on the body of the machine.
If there is only one stand for the reel on the machine body, then an additional one is usually included in the kit.

double needle It is installed in any sewing machine, just like a regular needle. The flat of the needle (saw cut) should be directed back (away from you), and the round side of the needle bulb should be towards you.
The threads from the spools are passed together through all the thread guides, including the upper thread tensioner, and only the lowest thread guides (at the base of the needle) separate them. The left thread is threaded into the left needle, the right thread into the right needle.
If this lower thread guide is only one (like Chaika's), then the left thread is passed through the thread guide, and the right thread is passed nearby, tucked directly into the eye of the right needle.

5. What are the needles and their purpose

As already noted, double needle may have a different distance between the needles. Depending on this distance, the appearance of the decorative stitch will change (narrower, wider) and even triple needles are produced.
The different width between the needles makes it possible to choose the width of the finishing stitch and use it for decorative design of clothes. Therefore, it is desirable to have several types of such needles in stock.

With this stitch, you can quickly and beautifully complete the finishing stitch on a pocket or valve shirt. However, it should be borne in mind that the use of double needles is more intended for decorative work and seams that do not experience heavy stress. A double needle uses only one lower thread to form a seam, so such a seam will not be especially strong. But, for example, for embroidering two or three parallel contours at the same time, a double needle is simply irreplaceable. Such a pattern looks especially impressive if the threads are of different colors. Using double needles with a narrow gap between them and a different shade or color of threads, you can create an imitation of a shadow in the seam. The threads, as it were, are superimposed on each other, creating the effect of a shadow, a three-dimensional image.
In addition to simple topstitching, twin needles can be used for sewing on tape, rib-gathering, pintucking, and more.

6. Wrongly matched twin needles can break

When shopping for twin needles for your sewing machine, pay attention to the maximum opening width of the needle plate.
The maximum zigzag stitch width of your sewing machine can also be a good guideline for determining needle size. Incorrectly selected needles can break off by touching the edge of the hole in the needle plate. This is especially important for machines such as Chaika, in which the needle is often offset from the center of the hole.

Before sewing with a twin needle, check the pattern selection switch. The stitch should not be set to a zigzag or other offset needle such as used for sewing on a zipper, etc.
The twin needle should only work in straight stitch mode. In any other mode, it will simply break on the needle plate of the sewing machine.

The cause of twin needle breakage is an incorrectly selected needle. The twin needle should slide freely into the hole in the needle plate without touching the edges of the needle plate. Be careful when using a twin needle, do not accidentally switch the machine to a zigzag mode. There is only one mode of operation of the double needle - straight stitching.

As well as a twin needle, any presser foot facilitates the work of a seamstress and increases the capabilities of a sewing machine. If you've ever sewed on genuine leather or faux leather, you probably know how hard it is to avoid fitting parts. And using a foot with a roller, you can sew such materials almost without landing, easily and quickly.

Sewing machine needles are different, including double needle. Each type of needle facilitates the sewing of a particular material or fabric. For example, for high-quality sewing of leather products, it is recommended to use a needle with a blade; for sewing knitted fabrics, use a needle with a blunt point. Read more about what needles are in this article.

When installing a double needle on a sewing machine, it is advisable to select very high-quality, thin and elastic threads. The sewing machine is under extreme stress when sewing with a twin needle, and in order for the stitching to be without gaps, with the correct tension of both threads in the stitch, use suitable modern threads.

For those who love to sew, there are many useful accessories and tools available to make your job easier. One has only to buy an inexpensive double needle and how much more convenient it becomes to sew finishing lines, and most importantly, beautifully and quickly. The same applies to pins. Using in each case a certain type of tailor's pins, you will greatly facilitate your work, make it more convenient and enjoyable.

How to use twin needles for a sewing machine. Any sewing machine sews with a double needle - this is not a function of the machine itself, but of the needle that you insert. From above, you need to thread 2 spools of thread, then stick the threads into 2 needle ears, and scribble. Since there is 1 bobbin at the bottom, the bottom line looks like a zigzag, and the top one looks like 2 parallel lines. It turns out beautifully when the tension of the upper threads is slightly tightened, then the seam on the jersey turns out to be convex.
When you get the hang of it, try threading up two different colors of thread and make a decorative stitch with a double needle, it's very beautiful! Just be careful at the beginning, some machines make such a mess that the width of the decorative stitch goes to the entire width of the foot and the second tail of the needle runs the risk of flying onto the foot.

But! I want to note that any machine can use double needles if it has a thread inserted into the needle from the front. And now, I propose to get acquainted with useful information on this topic, taken from various sources.

How to use twin needles for a sewing machine

The twin needle can be installed in any sewing machine with a zigzag stitch. The main thing you should pay attention to before buying a twin needle is the width of the opening of the needle plate. The distance between the needles should not be wider than this hole. How to sew and how to use a twin needle? Just like you use one needle, with only two upper threads, passing both threads through one tensioner.
Sewing with a twin needle increases the capacity of your machine and makes it easier to sew decorative and finishing stitches. Using a double needle for knitwear makes it possible to imitate the stitching of a cover stitch machine. A sewing double needle is indispensable when sewing clothes with double stitching trim. Finishing stitches on jeans, patch pockets, details on men's shirts, etc. you can sew evenly and neatly by sewing a seam with a double needle.

How to use a twin needle

How to use a twin needle? Just like with a regular needle, you just need to buy a suitable twin needle for your model of sewing machine and thread both top threads at the same time into two needles. The lower thread in the bobbin will be used by both upper threads at the same time.

Twin needles are not suitable for all machines

Twin needles can sew different fabrics, but only in machines with a zigzag stitch, lockstitch machines such as Podolskaya are not designed for their use. The needle plate of such machines has one round hole, while the double needle requires a narrow and wide gap, used in machines with a zigzag stitch. In addition, additional thread guides and a stand for the second spool are also required. If you are going to install a twin needle on a Seagull sewing machine, pay attention to how the needle is positioned in the hole when it is sewing a straight line. The needle must pass exactly in the center of the needle hole. If there is an offset when using a twin needle, it may break.

An additional creel is needed for the second spool of thread.

Modern sewing machines Janome, Brother, Juki and many others have a creel for two spools of thread and paired threaders and thread guides, which are separately threaded with upper threads.

Installing a double needle

A double needle is fixed in any sewing machine, just like a regular needle. The flat of the needle (saw cut) should be directed back, away from you, and the round side should be towards you, forward. Each coil must have a separate pin (coil holder), sometimes an additional one is installed for this. If there is only one stand for the reel on the machine body, then the second one is included in the kit. The threads from the spools are passed through all the thread guides, including the upper thread tensioner together, and only the lowest thread guides separate them by needles. The left thread is threaded into the left needle, the right thread into the right needle. If there is only one thread guide, like that of the Seagull, then the left thread is passed through the thread guide, and the right thread is next to it, right into the eye of the right needle.

What are and their purpose

A double needle can have a different distance between the needles - narrower, wider, and even there are triple needles. Various widths allow you to choose the width of the finishing line and use it for design. The use of double needles is more intended for decorative seams that are not subject to heavy stress.
Of course, it can be used for finishing stitching on a pocket or flap shirt. But, one should not forget that for the formation of a seam, a double needle uses only one thread - the lower one, so such a seam will not be especially strong. But, for example, for embroidering two or three parallel patterns at the same time, a double needle is simply irreplaceable. Such a pattern looks especially impressive if the threads are of different colors. Using double needles with a narrow gap between them, you can create an imitation of a shadow in the picture. Narrow needles put threads on top of each other, creating a shadow effect. In addition to simple topstitching, the twin needles can be used for sewing on tape, ribbed gathering, pintucks, and more.

Attention! Improperly selected twin needles can break

When buying twin needles from a store for your sewing machine, pay attention to the maximum width of the needle plate opening on your machine, or simply the width of your machine's zigzag stitch. Incorrectly selected needles may break, hitting the needle plate.
In addition, be sure to check the stitch type switch before you start sewing with a twin needle. The stitch should not be set to a zigzag or other needle offset such as sewing on a zipper, etc. The twin needle should only work in straight stitch mode. In any other mode, they will simply break on the needle plate of the sewing machine.

Application of twin needles

Have you used twin needles on your sewing machine yet? Now you will find out how many decorative and other possibilities it gives in the creation of clothes.

To use twin needles you need:

front threading

the presence of a zigzag stitch in a sewing machine.

the distance between the needles should not exceed the maximum width of the "zigzag" of your machine!

preparatory operations.

Install a twin needle on your machine, just like a regular single needle.

If the machine has two spool holders, install the spools so that one thread of the spool unwinds clockwise and the other thread counterclockwise. This will prevent the threads from tangling while sewing.

If you do not have two thread guides, then insert one thread into the thread guide and leave the other free.

Thread the threads into the appropriate needles. The machine is ready to sew. I advise you to sew at the minimum speed, this will also help prevent tangling of the threads.

Decorative stitches (embroidery)
Does your machine have decorative stitches? Try using twin needles to embellish with these stitches.

The twin needle allows you to embroider two parallel patterns at the same time. You can thread the upper threads of different colors.

If you use narrow needles 1.8 - 2.5 mm, then the stitch patterns will overlap each other, creating a shadow effect.

For decorative stitches, use a needle size smaller than the maximum zigzag width on your machine!

Sew on the braid

Insert a needle slightly smaller than the width of the braid into the needle holder and attach the satin stitch foot to the machine. This foot has a wide groove on the sole.

Set the machine controls to a straight stitch and the desired stitch length. Loosen the upper thread tension. Pass the tape through the needle hole of the foot (or under the foot).

Bring the fabric under the presser foot, insert the needles into the fabric and sew. The braid is attached to the fabric simultaneously on both sides.

Gathering with elastic

Wind a thin sewing gum (like Hungarian) around the bobbin. The top threads should match the fabric and match the color.

Set the stitch length to 2-2.5 mm and sew with a straight stitch.

An elastic band tucked into the hook mechanism will create uniform gathers on thin fabric. Admire how the use of this technique adorned the blouse.

Embossed pintucks on fabric
For the following embellishments, you will need a special foot for embossed tucks. The foot has grooves on the sole, into which the fabric is pulled during sewing, as a result of which a relief fold appears.

Different sizes of folds require different presser feet. The wider and deeper the grooves, the more voluminous the relief can be. Many parallel grooves on the foot allow you to lay even reliefs relative to each other.

The 7-groove foot is designed for small tucks and is used on light fabrics.

The 5-groove foot is used for sewing on medium-sized fabrics and allows you to sew more voluminous tucks. This foot can also be used for sewing in a cord.

To perform reliefs on light fabrics, it is recommended to use needles with a width of 1.6 - 2 mm; on medium tissues, needles 2.5 - 3 mm; and needles of 4 mm or more on medium and heavy fabrics.

When sewing tucks, the upper thread tension regulator must be set to 7-9, that is, to the maximum.

When decorating fabric with reliefs, keep in mind that the consumption will be greater.

It is very important to perform exactly the first pinch, since the evenness of the subsequent ones will depend on this. Therefore, draw the first line on the fabric and only then lay a tuck along it.

It is advisable to first make reliefs on a larger part, then apply a pattern over the part and mark the cut lines.

Use the quilting fabric guide for wide topstitching.

Reliefs can be both a decor and serve as tucks.

See how you can decorate a summer blouse with embossed tucks. Use embossed tucks to decorate linen, children's clothing, blouses, summer tops.

Embossed fleece

How much time do you spend knitting sweaters with knitting needles? Try "knitting" a sweater in one day using a double needle. Believe me, it's very easy and fast!

For reliefs such as in the photo, you will need fleece and a double needle of at least 5 mm. Such reliefs will look beautiful on velvet.

Reliefs with cord

To sew in the cord, use a twin needle of such a width (needle spacing) that the cord passes freely between the needles.

Attach any foot suitable for sewing in a cord: a foot for sewing on beads or a foot for large embossed tucks.

Draw a straight or curly line on the fabric with chalk or a disappearing felt-tip pen in the place where you want to make a cord trim.

Pin the end of the cord to the beginning of the line on the wrong side of the fabric.

Bring the fabric with the cord under the presser foot, ensure that the cord is exactly between the needles and start sewing with a straight stitch following the line drawn on the fabric.

This is how the “reliefs with cord” finish on the blouse looks like. And these figured reliefs are made on a transparent fabric with a backing of cords in a contrasting color.

Knitwear sewing

For sewing knitwear, use special needles for sewing knitwear with a width of 4-5 mm.

In the photo, the hem is made with a 4 mm needle. On the front side, a double straight line is visible, from the inside there is a “zigzag”, which allows the knitted fabric to stretch. A similar stitch imitates sewing on an overlocker.

Set the machine to a straight stitch and the desired stitch length.

Bend the cut of the jersey, lay a line along the front side at the same distance from the fold.

Carefully trim the seam allowance close to the zigzag.

The twin needle stitch patterns are made on a Janome My Excel 23X sewing machine. This machine has a maximum zigzag width of 6.5 mm.

Among all machine parts, sewing needles receive the greatest load. The tool must be durable, of high quality, properly selected for the type of fabric. It is easy for beginner seamstresses to get confused among the variety of details, since manufacturers produce a large number of items with different characteristics. Knowing the marking and purpose of the tool will help you choose the right product for a specific purpose.

Sewing needle classification

The tool is divided into two large groups - overlock and for household sewing machines. The main difference between them is the size of the eyelet, the overlock part has a larger one. Other classification features: sharpening, eye shape, diameter, groove parameters, purpose for certain fabrics. In order for the user to have a clear idea of the characteristics of the product, the manufacturer has introduced digital and letter marking.

The meaning of the numbers in the marking

The numbers indicate the parameters of the needle for sewing machines. Many copies have a digital mark 130/705. She says that the part can be used in a household sewing machine, it has a flat bulb. Another marking takes the following form: No. 80/12. The number in the first place is the diameter of the needle according to the European metric. The value is given in hundredths of a millimeter, in this example the diameter is 0.8 mm. The lower the value, the thinner the tool. The second number is the same value, only in fractions of an inch (US system).

From the table below, you will understand which numbers are suitable for different types of fabric:

Numbers, fractions of a millimeter

How to choose needles

Discounts for this group of goods are extremely rare (unless there is damage to the packaging), so you should not expect a reduction in cost. Promotions are carried out by online stores, they need to be closely monitored. If you're lucky, you can buy several items for the price of one. When buying, you need to focus on the following criteria:

  • type of sewing machine. Be sure to read the instructions for your device, it gives specific recommendations on the selection of needles: numbers, markings are indicated. This point is especially important to observe when replacing a working tool in overlockers - they have differences in flasks.
  • Fabric characteristics. When choosing a needle for sewing machines, be guided by the table, which indicates the purpose of each working tool. Different groups of fabrics require a tool of a specific shape and thickness.
  • Manufacturer. The best brands are Schmetz, Organ, Groz-Beckert. By choosing products of well-known companies, you will not worry about their quality. Before starting work, you need to check the curvature of the tool, the absence of external defects (for example, loss of sharpening, incorrect position of the eye in relation to the groove, rust).

For household sewing machines

Needles for home devices have a flat flask - this facilitates the process of proper installation of the instrument. Do not attempt to use an industrial needle in a home appliance. If you find a part is warped, don't try to straighten it. A high-quality product should not bend, with an intensive attempt to level it, steel or nickel breaks - this is an indicator of good quality.

For industrial sewing machines

A rounded flask is the main difference from household models. There is also a difference in length and purpose. Industrial sewing machine needles are produced by the following companies: Schmetz, Grots-Beckert, Organ. They offer working tools for overlockers, embroidery, upright, tailor, button, rivet, cover stitch, hand stitch machines, blind stitch machines, etc. Each device has its own marking, which you need to pay attention to.

Video

The removable device consists of two needles mounted on one holder. A double needle lays three lines at the same time: two on the front side and one on the wrong side. There are several types of devices. The most popular are universal devices that are suitable for almost all types of fabric. Knitwear is sewn with "super-stretch" designs with a rounded tip that spreads but does not pierce the fabric. Needles for decorative stitching of jeans are produced separately.

The device can only be installed on those types of sewing machines that are designed to sew a zigzag seam. Twin needles cannot be used on regular lockstitch machines. Modern sewing machines are equipped with double spool stands, as well as paired thread guides and thread guides for threading the top threads.

Terms of use

Before using the twin needle, be sure to loosen the bobbin thread tension and thread the bobbin threads correctly. The bobbin thread is pulled out and fixed by the two upper threads at the same time, so pulling too hard may cause the thread to break. In order for the stitch to come out of high quality and even, you should adjust the tension well and pick up the bottom thread in thickness (one number less than the top one).

There are several options for installing a second spool for thread passing into the eye of a second needle. Some sewing machines are equipped with two stands, others are equipped with a separate additional stand. Each top coil is mounted on a separate holder. The two upper threads pass together through all the holes and levers, and only at the bottom, at the base of the needle, do they separate. The right thread is threaded into the right needle, the left thread into the left. If there is only one thread guide in the machine, then only the left thread passes through it, the right thread passes next to the thread guide and is tucked directly into the eye of the right needle.

When buying a double needle, you should consider the design features of the sewing machine. Carefully inspect your machine's needle plate and measure the width of its hole. The instructions should state the maximum width of the "zigzag" that your machine can do. Especially carefully you need to select double needles for machines with a holder offset from the center of the needle hole. Incorrect selection may cause the needle to not enter the hole while sewing, hit the sewing plate and break very quickly.

For many beginner needlewomen, sewing with a double needle causes real stupor, because what is obtained at first is far from ideal. Today I will show you how to set up your assistant so that the seam is beautiful, elastic and not tight.

Let's start with the machine. We put the second coil on an additional rod and stretch the threads from both coils as one through all the necessary slots. Next, we will separate the threads. We will thread one into the needle, passing through the thread guide, and the second - bypassing it. Set the stitch length to 3.5 mm.

Let's try to stitch with standard settings. We get a beautiful line from the face, and from the inside - strongly elongated loops of the upper thread and a lower thread pulled almost in a straight line.

Logic dictates that the upper thread tension should be increased. We try. Increase by one division and try to flash. We get the same thing, maybe even worse.

This is the same mistake that many people make. The loops on the wrong side are not from the fact that the upper thread is loosely stretched, but from the fact that the lower thread is pulled!

Fixing it! We unscrew the needle plate, remove it and take out the bobbin holder. (It fits perfectly with my hand, I needed tweezers so that the fingers in the photo did not block anything.) By the way, once you opened the inside of the car, clean it thoroughly, for sure, lint and dust have accumulated there. ;)

We took out the bobbin case and saw that there were two screws on it. The right one, with a cross notch, we do not need. It fastens the tension plate and in no case should it be touched! But the left screw with a flat slot is just designed to adjust the tension. To work, we need a small screwdriver.

Mark for yourself the initial position of the screw in the direction of the slot (that is, the place on the body where the notch on the screw is directed, I have a red dot there). At first, I simply scratched a notch on the body in order to return the screw to its previous position with an accuracy of a millimeter. Noted? Now turn the screw counterclockwise a third of a turn with a screwdriver (I have this position marked with a green dot). Usually this is enough. We put the bobbin holder in place and twist the needle plate.

Let's try to flash it. Sample stitch #3. Already much better! The loops from the upper threads became smaller, and the lower thread began to fit into an obvious zigzag. In principle, you can already sew and so. But I want more.

You can try again to tighten the upper thread. And then we get a line on the sample number 4. Better? Not at all!

Then I take out the bobbin holder again and loosen the lower thread a little more. I get sample #5. Hooray! What you need!

We draw conclusions: when sewing with a double needle, the main adjustment is not with the upper thread tension wheel, but with a screw on the bobbin holder. How much we tried to adjust the upper thread, it does not give any result, except for pulling the lines into a roller. It may seem that this setup is complicated and time-consuming. At first, yes, but then habit and experience will turn it into a matter of seconds. And, you see, a beautiful line is worth it!
By the way, look, from the face, all five samples look quite presentable.))))
Well, now you too know how to make beautiful stitching with a twin needle. Such, for example:
Good luck to everyone, obedient fabrics and precise settings! See you again soon - I'll bring a tracksuit for my first grader.))))
