Methods for making a knife handle

Handles according to the method of attachment are divided into:

Overhead, in the case of a wide shank, often defining the contour of the future handle. The handle is assembled from two parts fixed with rivets.

This mounting method does not limit the size, so you can balance a wide or long blade. Therefore, this design has found wide application in kitchen knives.

Mounted, when the blade has a narrow shank. The handle is one-piece, quite resistant to damage, has a small weight in comparison with riveted ones, which predetermines their use in long-term labor-intensive work.

Materials and tools

For the handle of the knife, valuable wood is used. Walnut and maple are considered the best, beech, cherry, birch, oak and many others are used. They have a beautiful texture, sufficient strength, high surface quality after grinding and a long service life.

When choosing raw materials, it is necessary to pay attention to the presence of shells, to humidity - over-dried material will crack, too damp is prone to decomposition. The required humidity should not exceed 12-15%. The stale material is also not suitable for work.

For wood processing, impregnation is required. Suitable linseed drying oil or dish varnish, pure mineral oil.

Impregnation is needed to protect the finished product from moisture, and with good polishing it gives shine, emphasizing a special grace. For the final stage of processing, you will need wax, rosin, turpentine, as well as “zero” sandpaper.

If the choice is made on the push-in method, then epoxy resin and sawdust of wood are needed for reliable fastening. For the overhead method, you will need a copper, brass or bronze rod and also epoxy glue.

As a tool for manual processing, a hacksaw, a planer, chisels, rasps, scrapers, abrasive stones, and a vice are used. You can also use power tools: an electric drill, an electric jigsaw, a chisel and others.

Making a wooden knife handle

Sometimes there are times when you need to replace the handle of an old knife or just make a new tool yourself. Let's take a look at the points on how to make a handle for a knife in a mounted way and overhead, or riveted to an ordinary person without special skills.

Insertion handle

Treat the pre-selected tree with an antiseptic.

Cut out the workpiece of a suitable shape, be sure to pay attention to the angle of the cut to get a beautiful texture cut. Homogeneous wood without compositions is considered.

Mark and drill a hole of the desired diameter and length slightly larger than the blade shank. Dilute the epoxy resin in a ratio of 100:13, mix with sawdust and pour the resulting mixture into the hole. Insert the blade shank, pre-wrapped with tape to protect it from contamination. Now clamp the semi-finished knife into the press and wait 1 day for the resin to dry.

If the handle is with notches for the fingers, then a deeper recess must be made under the index finger. With the help of plasticine, you can make a visual form so as not to make a mistake on the tree. Next, using a cutter, rasp and sandpaper, bring the workpiece to the desired form.

Then perform impregnation, for which the oil or drying oil is heated in a water bath and the knife handle is immersed in heated raw materials for 1 day. When cooked, there will be no air bubbles on the surface of the oil. Drying follows, preferably in the sun.

Carry out the final finishing "zero".

Mix rosin, turpentine and wax in a water bath and cover the handle with the resulting mixture. Finally, polish the handle and get rid of the tape on the blade.

Overhead handle

The tree treated with an antiseptic is clamped in a vice and cut into 2 parts. Surfaces adjacent to the blade tang are carefully ground and polished to avoid gaps. Tools for wood processing in this case, as in the description above.

Mark holes for fastening wooden blanks. A copper or brass rod of the desired diameter is selected in advance. Drill mounting holes to match the holes on the blade shank. Cut off the required number of blanks for rivets, let their length be greater than the thickness of the finished handle.

Make a rough assembly of knife parts using rods. Process the handle with a cutter and sandpaper for a symmetrical connection of the halves.

At first, you can work with the sides, and after disassembly, finish the flat front parts.

Coat the sides of the wooden parts of the handle against the shank with epoxy, to which you can add a few drops of cartridge toner to get the right color tone. Wrap the knife blade with tape so as not to stain with glue. Connect with the knife blank and insert the prepared pieces of the rod.

Cut the protruding ends of the rivets flush with the handle.

The resulting product must be clamped in a vise. You can wrap the handle in oiled rubber to protect it from unnecessary scratches when squeezed. Drying time is at least a day.

At the next stage, we impregnate the product in the same way as described in paragraph 5 for the insertion handle. Oil treatment can be done several times.

After receiving the dried product, make a final polishing and opening with wax or ship varnish according to points 6 and 7 of the previous description.

Greetings to those who like to work with metal. This time we will look at how to make a knife of an unusual shape, it looks quite interesting. Such a knife can be taken with you for hunting, fishing or outdoor activities. Surely this product will not go unnoticed by your friends and acquaintances. Making such a knife is not difficult, the manufacturing time will depend on the materials and tools you have. In general, there is nothing difficult to manufacture, and even a master with an entry-level will cope with the task.


The author used grade O1 as steel. This steel is quite common among many foreign craftsmen. The composition of this steel is almost 1% carbon, which makes it quite hard after hardening. Steel is hardened quite easily, this can be done in domestic conditions, the hardness can be over 60 HRC. This steel also contains chromium, which prevents corrosion. Other useful alloying additives include manganese (1.2%), silicon (0.75%), chromium (0.5%), vanadium (0.20%) and tungsten (0.5%). Today, a blank of similar steel for making a knife can be ordered via the Internet. So, let's take a closer look at how to make such a knife!

Materials and tools used

List of materials:
- steel O1;
- electrical tape;
- material for overlays;
- epoxy adhesive;
- oil for wood.

- stationery knife, paper and pencil (to make a template);
- belt sander;
- drill or drilling machine;

- drill;
- gas burner or forging furnace for hardening;

Knife making process:

Step one. We make a template
First, let's make a template for our knife. To do this, the author takes paper and draws the profile of the knife by hand. If you have a problem with this, you can print the desired profile on the printer. And then the author cut out the template using a clerical knife. The resulting template is either glued to steel, or circled with a marker.









Step two. Cut out the main profile
Well, then we proceed to cutting, for this the author used a grinder. You can also work on a band saw. Difficult parts are cut into pieces. Having cut out the main profile, we drill a hole in the handle area using a crown. We also need to drill holes for the pins.
Once this is done, we go over the contour with a grinder with a grinding disc to remove the remaining parts.














Step three. Finishing
Next, the author processes the profile along the contour on a belt grinder. Hard-to-reach places can be easily processed with a drill with a sandpaper attachment.

Once this is done, draw a center line along the blade. It will allow us to make symmetrical bevels on both sides. This procedure can be done using a drill of the same diameter as the thickness of the workpiece. It is not necessary to sharpen the knife at this step, the blade thickness should not be less than 2 mm, otherwise the alloying elements will burn out during hardening.






Step four. hardening
For hardening, you will need a blacksmith furnace or a gas burner. We heat the steel red-hot and dip it in oil. Then we check whether the hardening was successful using a file. If the metal is not taken, the hardening was successful. If the metal is taken, we heat it to a brighter glow.

Handle the metal carefully after this, it will be brittle. This problem can be solved by tempering the steel. As a result, we get elasticity, the knife will spring under load. We use for these purposes a household oven and a temperature regime for the selected steel grade. The knife must be left to cool with the oven for smooth cooling.






Step five. Cleaning, grinding and sharpening
After hardening, the metal will be black or straw-colored if you cleaned it before tempering. This is the result of metal oxidation. We clamp the blade on the table with a clamp and proceed to grinding. We need sandpaper, the plaque is cleaned off quite effectively. Wet the sandpaper with water, so it is cleaned of dirt.










Next, we proceed to refine the blade. First, we work on a belt grinder, we sharpen the blade to the maximum possible value. If you have a fine grinding belt or polishing belt, then you can sharpen the knife to perfect condition with it. The author used a special grinding machine with a slowly rotating grinding stone. Due to low speed and water, the blade does not overheat and sharpens perfectly. Ideally, the blade should be such that it cuts the paper overhang. For further work, wrap the blade with paper and tape on top so as not to cut yourself.

Step six. Cut out the overlays
From what material the author made the overlays remains unknown, but this is clearly not wood. The advantage of artificial materials over wood is that they are not afraid of moisture, the aggressive effects of salts, acids, the sun, and so on. We cut out two identical blanks, the author used a tape cutting machine for this, but you can also handle it with the help of a grinder. The resulting blanks are brought to an almost final result using a belt grinder.








Step seven. Assembling the pen
The handle is assembled in a proven way - using epoxy glue and pins. As for the pins, here you can be smart and do something interesting. The surfaces to be glued are carefully cleaned and degreased. It is desirable to grind the metal with a large sandpaper, the glue does not adhere well to a smooth surface.

We tighten the handle with clamps so that it sticks evenly along the entire length. We leave the glue to dry, usually it takes a day. After that, you can safely work with the product.
















The glue has dried, now we go to the belt grinder and form the desired shape of the handle. For finer processing, the author used a drill with a sandpaper nozzle. Finishing is carried out manually, using a piece of fine sandpaper. If the pads are not made of wood, sandpaper can be wetted with water, it will work better this way. As a result, the handle can be polished.

Step eight. Picture etching
You can apply a unique pattern to the knife, so it will look much more interesting. For etching, you need to make a stencil. The author made it from masking tape, and the drawing, in this case a letter, was burned out with a laser. To do this, adhesive tape is glued to the tree.

Well, then we proceed to etching. Typically, a saline solution and a power supply are used for this. We feed the plus on the product, and connect the cotton wool soaked in salt water to the minus, and drive it over the place of etching. After a while, the exposed metal will “burn out” and we will get a durable pattern. That's all, after that we remove the adhesive tape and clean the knife from the glue.

Copywriter: I looked at the classification and it seems like they are: cook (general use), meat and vegetable, respectively. Fructus-Vegetable. Or maybe Vegetus? Well, kind of vegetarian. And includes fruits and vegetables. Total: large - "Shefus", medium - "Usubus", small - "Vegetus".
