How to sew ordinary curtains. Sewing curtains with your own hands: step by step instructions. Preliminary fabric calculation

Designers call home textiles the key point of any interior, and therefore they are advised to take it very seriously. Curtains and curtains are the largest examples of home textiles. And you can't go wrong with them. They should be selected taking into account the overall color scheme, style and purpose of the room. However, some women do not take risks and order the design and manufacture of curtains to professionals. Unfortunately, the cost of window treatments is very high. And for many housewives who, after the repair, have to make the final touch, there is nothing left but their own hands. This means that there are hours ahead of choosing a style and color scheme, going to fabric stores, purchasing related materials and - the magic of creativity.

Five simple options for sewing the top edge

If you are going to sew curtains yourself, then check out the five options for processing the top edge. All of them are easy to cut and sew. Curtains with this top of these five options are versatile, they will look great in any room - from the kitchen to the nursery.

Plain top

The upper edge, as, in fact, the lower one with the side ones, is folded, ironed and stitched. A curtain with such a top is most often hung on clothespins or on hand-sewn loops. Using this type of processing of the top edge, you can quickly sew By the way, do not sew long curtains: today the kitchen fashion dictates a shortened style.

Braid

This option is chosen by women who think about the question: “How to sew and so that the gathers and folds are the same?” The laces, stretched through a special braid, can create a wide variety of forms of even and clear folds. To the four folded and hemmed edges, you just need to sew on a braid, and even a child can be entrusted with pulling the lace.

loops

Curtains "on the straps" look simple, but tasteful. And sewing them on is no more difficult than straps to a dress, well, perhaps the number is larger. The easiest way is to sew the loops directly to the hem of the top (from the wrong side), but it will be much more beautiful and stronger if the edge of the loop is inside the finishing seam.

Hidden loops

This curtain top option has its own charm. The main difficulty is to calculate the size of the loops. It all depends on the diameter of the cornice and the density of the fabric. Take your time, count again before sewing curtains. Make a cut with your own hands. And start sewing.

eyelets

Feature of curtains on grommets - plastic or metal rings - ideal vertical folds. Choose this option boldly - sewing them is not as difficult as it seems. Cutting even holes and snapping the two parts of the eyelets is a matter of five minutes for one ring.

When choosing the style of curtains, consider the overall style of the house. Curtains with your favorite lambrequins are one of the elements of modernity, so in a room dominated by hi-tech, they will look at least strange. In addition, each style has its own “favorite” fabrics. So, classics are heavy, dense curtains, and country, for example, are light and natural curtains. Before doing it yourself, make sure that the chosen style and fabric will not contradict the overall interior design.

It takes ~2 minutes to read

Every hostess dreams of changing the interior of her house from time to time. There are many ways to do this. The easiest and cheapest is to change the curtains. They can be purchased at any market or store. It will be easy to do this, since the choice of curtains is huge. But the best solution would be to sew the curtains yourself. Even those who have never sewed such products can easily cope with this task. You will learn how to make roller blinds with your own hands by reading the step-by-step instructions of the article to the end.

Disadvantages and advantages of such curtains

Advantages:

  1. No light seeps through them, nothing can be seen through them, that is, no one can look into your window.
  2. They can be hung anywhere.
  3. They take up little space.
  4. Fresh air passes through the roller blinds easily and freely.
  5. These blinds are perfect for any room.
  6. Rolshtora can be hung both independently and in addition to others.
  7. Their selection is huge.

Flaws:

  1. Roller blinds absorb bad smells.
  2. They need to be constantly looked after.
  3. After a while, they may warp.
  4. The mechanism that raises the roller blind quickly fails.

How to sew roller blinds on plastic windows with your own hands

To sew a roll curtain with your own hands, you need to choose the right fabric. When choosing a fabric, it is necessary to consider that it is:

  • natural;
  • Moisture repellent;
  • Reflected light.

For the manufacture of roller blinds, you can use a fabric of the same color or multi-colored and with a pattern. It will depend only on you and your choice.

Making your own hands: step by step instructions (photo and video)

To make a roller blind with your own hands, you will need:

  • Textile.
  • Cord.
  • Rope.
  • Ribbon.
  • Weighting agent (metal or wood).
  • Rod shaft (wooden beam or metal tube).
  • Screwdriver.
  • Self-tapping screws.
  • Drill.
  • Iron.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Fasteners.

Master Class

  1. Determine the width of the roller blind. Measure the length of the roller and subtract one centimeter from the resulting length.
  2. Now let's determine the length of the curtain. To do this, measure the distance from the roller to the window sill. Add twenty centimeters to the result.
  3. Now make a curtain pattern. Measure on the fabric the width and length that you got when measuring. Cut out the resulting rectangle. There should be two such rectangular segments.
  4. Fold the pieces with the right side inward and sew on three sides. Should be a bag.
  5. Turn the resulting bag inside out and iron with an iron.
  6. Let's move on to fixing the weighting agent. Its length should correspond to the width of the curtain. This is necessary so that the roller blinds do not hang on the plastic window. Fasten the weighting agent, tuck the fabric and sew, stepping back five millimeters from it.
  7. Now we need to prepare the tapes. With their help, the curtain will hang in a folded state. From the fabric, cut a ribbon eight centimeters wide. And the length of the ribbon depends on the height of the window and is calculated using the following formula: 2 * the height of the window opening + 30.
  8. Fold the resulting ribbon lengthwise, right side inward and sew. Then the tape must be turned out, ironed and sewn up the open side. Do-it-yourself roller blinds are ready.

Do-it-yourself mechanism for roller blinds

First option.

For the manufacture of the mechanism will need:

  • Staples;
  • Video clip;
  • Duct tape;
  • Screwdriver.

Manufacturing steps:

  • Let's start with brackets. If the curtain will be inside the frame, then the brackets are placed three centimeters below the top of the curtain. If the curtain is outside, then the brackets must be fixed five centimeters above the window opening. The bracket with a round hole is installed on the right side, and with a square hole - on the left side.
  • The distance between the staples should be the same as the length of the roller. If so, then fix the video.
  • Now we fix the curtain on the roller. Lay it face up, and position the roller at the top of the curtain. Wind the edge of the fabric around the roller and fix it with adhesive tape.
  • Throw the ribbons over the roller, and fix them in the center with a stapler.
  • Insert the curtain roller into the brackets. The roller blind for the plastic window is ready.

Second option.

For him you will need:

  1. Bar.
  2. Adhesive double-sided tape.
  3. Glue gun.
  4. Special mounts.
  5. Cord and hooks.
  6. Rails are wooden.
  7. Weighting agent.

Manufacturing instructions:

  • First you need to saw off a wooden lath. Its length should be less than one centimeter of the width of the curtain.
  • Cover it with the same fabric from which the roller blind was sewn.
  • Glue double-sided sticky tape to the bottom of the bar.
  • On the reverse side of the bar, special fasteners must be attached.
  • Insert the weighting agent into the stitched roller blind.
  • Attach the roller blind to the prepared cornice.
  • Take the cords, tie them and bring them out through the special holes. Then line them up and tie a knot.

A video on the manufacture of curtains and a mechanism will help to cope with this task.

How to make with a garter belt

To make such a roller blind you will need:

  • textile;
  • sewing machine;
  • iron;
  • weighting agent;
  • bar and rail.

Manufacturing steps:

  1. First you need to make a pattern from the fabric. Measure the desired width and length of the future curtain. Cut out the resulting rectangle and sew it on three sides. Turn the fabric inside out and iron it.
  2. Insert the rail into the unstitched side, and then sew it up. This will be the bottom.
  3. Attach the top of the roller blind to the bar.
  4. Now prepare the ribbons. They should be twice as long as the roller blind itself. There should be two such tapes.
  5. Attach the ribbon to the bar.
  6. The roller blind is ready.

Do-it-yourself roller blinds

To make roller blinds you will need:

  • fabric for sewing;
  • paper template;
  • simple pencil;
  • bar of soap or chalk;
  • ruler;
  • adhesive pad;
  • fringe;
  • special glue for fabric.

Master class on their manufacture:

  1. First you need to make a pattern. It is done in the same way as for ordinary roller blinds. But there is a difference - you need to leave an allowance of 25 centimeters. This is necessary for finishing the edge.
  2. Now make a template. It is made from plain paper. Its width is equal to the height of the carved edge, and its length corresponds to the length of the roller minus one centimeter. On the resulting rectangle, make the pattern that you like.
  3. The rectangle must be folded with an accordion. On the first strip, draw the desired pattern. Cut the rest of the strips along this pattern. So, the pattern will be the same across the entire width.
  4. Make a coulisse. Insert a tube into it, and sew the edges.
  5. Place the paper template under the drawstring and secure with pins. Circle the pattern with a piece of chalk.
  6. Glue the fringe along the bottom edge.
  7. Fix the resulting roller blinds on the roller.

Now you know how to make roller blinds with your own hands, as well as how to make roller blinds yourself without the help of a master. Good luck!

Sewing curtains with your own hands is a very real and not so difficult task. To make an ordinary curtain, you do not need special skills and long exercises. The main thing is to be able to sew, correctly calculate the required dimensions and choose the right fabric. Moreover, a self-sewn product will become a real highlight in the interior of any room.

measurements

Correctly made measurements are the first and very important step to a successful result.

But such beauty can be sewn by yourself! Moreover, today on the Internet there are a large number of photos and videos with step-by-step instructions for sewing curtains.

First you need to measure the length of the cornice - this will be the basis of the width of the canvas. The length of the curtain can be up to the window sill, fall a little beyond its line, not reach a couple of centimeters to the floor, touch the floor a little, or even lie on it.

  • technological allowances for processing the upper and lower edges - we add 25 centimeters to the main measurements along the length;
  • when calculating the width, you need to decide whether it will be a straight curtain without folds or with drapery. Typically, the drape factor is two. That is, we multiply the length of the cornice by two, plus ten centimeters for processing the edges. It should be noted that this coefficient is suitable for dense and medium density fabrics. For light materials (organza, silk, chiffon, taffeta), it is better to take a factor of three. You can check the degree of compliance of the material to drapery in the following way: take a fabric with folded folds in your hand and raise it as high as possible. So you can easily determine how much stock of fabric is needed to form the desired folds.

It is better to always take a cloth with a margin, so as not to miscalculate. And the leftovers can always be used for sewing tiebacks or pelmets.

It is correct to make measurements with a tape measure, since an ordinary centimeter is not practical in this matter

With the measurements decided, now you need to choose the right fabric.

Choosing a fabric

For curtains, it is better to take semi-synthetic fabrics. Natural materials are known for their environmental friendliness, hypoallergenicity and, of course, look noble in the interior. But it should be noted that they quickly deteriorate under the influence of sunlight, require special care. Also, natural panels shrink heavily after washing, so if you decide to use this option, be sure to add at least 50-60 cm to the calculated measurements.

The most durable are 100 percent polyester with the addition of cotton, as well as viscose. Satin, jacquard, velvet, coarse calico, tapestry, taffeta are suitable for curtains. For tulle - chiffon, organza, veil.

Particular attention should be paid to the calico. Coarse calico curtains are very practical, environmentally friendly and protect well from sunlight, can withstand a large number of washes. However, when measuring, it should be borne in mind that the calico shrinks, so it is imperative to calculate the margin.

Your choice should also be combined with the interior and style in which the room is made. Each style is characterized by the use of certain panels, with an abundance or absence of decorative elements.

For small rooms with a low ceiling, it is better to give preference to light or semi-dense materials.

When choosing a color scheme, it should be borne in mind that dark colors visually reduce space, light, pastel, on the contrary, expand. A horizontal pattern will visually expand the room, while a vertical pattern will create the effect of greater height.

What you need

Before sewing curtains, prepare yourself:

  • textile;
  • a sewing machine (in its absence, of course, you can get by with a needle and thread, although this will require much more effort and time);
  • pins;
  • threads;
  • ruler, pencil, scissors;
  • sketch.

Let's get to work, cut

And now you have already calculated the dimensions, prepared everything you need. Where to start the sewing process itself?

Initially, it is necessary to cut the fabric according to the prepared sketch. Before that, carefully inspect the canvas for defects and determine the front and back sides.

Some fabrics, especially natural fabrics, require special treatment before cutting to prevent the curtain from shrinking after washing. Usually this process involves uniformly moistening the fabric from a spray gun, then ironing it through gauze until it dries completely. If there is a pattern, first perform these steps on a small patch to check if it will drain. Be sure to iron the synthetics from the wrong side before cutting. Next, fold the product in half with the front side inward, edge to edge, and pin along the edges with pins. Cut it into two pieces according to your measurements. Then individually fit each piece to the measurements and cut off the remnants. From these remnants, it will be possible to subsequently cut out details for decorating the curtains.

Cutting - the very first and no less important stage on the way to sewing curtains

open swag

Swag is a part of a lambrequin, which is a semicircle with folds. Usually the swag is cut at an angle of 45 degrees, which, when folded, gives a very beautiful fold. If there are drawings, then cutting at such an angle does not always work out. In this case, cutting is carried out along the warp thread. It is very important to keep proportions. The sagging of the swag should be half of its length along the eaves.

The swag pattern will look like a semicircle. Initially, you need to build a right angle with a vertex. From it to the right we set aside half the size of the product, plus a couple of centimeters for processing the edges. The second segment, equal to the depth of the product, taking into account the drapery coefficient, is laid down. Based on these data, we draw a circle. After processing the edges, we sew the mounting tape.

When cutting, be sure to take into account the stocks that were calculated earlier for processing the edges.

How to sew curtains?

Finishing the side edges

You choose the width of the edging according to your taste. Usually it varies from one and a half to three centimeters.

We bend the edges of the selected width to the wrong side and iron. Then we bend again to the same size and pin it with pins. Next we sew the sides.

We process the bottom

We bend the bottom edge by 5 cm, iron it, then bend it another 5 cm and pin it with pins. We build up the bottom.

We process the top

We bend the upper edge by one and a half centimeters, iron and sew. Next, we take the curtain tape, bend its side edge by one and a half centimeters and apply it with loops upwards on the front side of the curtain. We combine the top edge of the curtain and tape. Next, we attach the tape to the curtain with pins in a checkerboard pattern. Having reached the end, we cut the tape, taking into account one and a half centimeters of stock. We bend this stock and attach it to the side edge of the curtain.

Then it is necessary to stitch the tape along the inner edge to the curtain, retreating 1 mm from the edges.

At the end of the pin, we take out and tie the threads of the curtain tape into a knot from the right and left sides. When pulling on the strings, a beautiful drapery is formed.

Using a thread on a curtain tape, you can create a beautiful drapery, as shown in the photo.

So you sewed your first curtain yourself!

At the very end, the finished product must be ironed well, paying special attention to the seams and edges.

This is a simple step by step guide for beginners.

Naturally, you can also sew more complex models, lambrequins, use a combination of different types and shapes of fabrics. But for this you will need some experience in sewing and cutting complicated parts.

Also on the Internet you can find a huge number of videos that will help you visually study each stage and the subtleties of tailoring curtains.

Eyelets can also be used to attach curtains.

Decor from leftovers

From leftovers and shreds, you can sew interesting decorative elements for curtains that will give them a more beautiful and sophisticated look.

We are talking about pickups and lambrequins.

Lambrequins to sew with your own hands will be somewhat difficult. We wrote about cutting parts for a simple lambrequin above. After processing the edges of the cut product, stitch the curtain tape to the top and iron. Also, it is worth paying attention that today on sale you can find self-adhesive material - thermal bando. With it, even a beginner can make a very beautiful lambrequin that will decorate the curtain. For this you need:

  • attach the pattern to the thermoband and cut along the contour without allowances;
  • cut the same element on the fabric, but with an increase in allowances;
  • glue the fabric to the thermoband with an iron;
  • attach curtain tape.

This technique is very simple and will allow you to make a curtain decoration without much effort and time.

In any case, on the Internet you will find a lot of videos on sewing lambrequins. They will help you better understand the features and techniques of sewing this decorative element.

From the leftovers, you can also sew a variety of pickups. This can be a longitudinal Velcro tape or processed ribbons, which can then be tied into beautiful knots or bows. To find out the size of the pickup, measure the circumference of the gathered curtain and take into account a couple of centimeters from all edges for processing. The tiebacks can later be embroidered with beads, small pebbles, sequins, sew a fringe to the edges. From the remaining patches, you can sew flowers with which to decorate the tiebacks.

Patchwork can make beautiful ties for curtains, for example, as in the photo

How to sew curtains?

In principle, nothing is impossible. Curtains you can sew yourself. For curtains of this design, a pattern is not needed. You need a meter tape, pins, scissors, a sewing machine and a great desire.

Now let's deal with curtains with eyelets , which are worn directly on the rod of the eaves.

Another 5 cm must be added to the length from the floor to the cornice. After all, the cornice will be on the same level with the rings - and a few centimeters of fabric on top. If the curtains are up to the window sill, 10-15 cm are left on the filing. For touching the floor - 20 cm. For lying on the floor - 2-3 cm. This is what design you choose. The fabric width is calculated as follows: multiply the window width by 2 (4m + 3m + 8.8m). You also need folds for beauty.

The stores sell special tapes with rings already punched. They make the task much easier! The number of rings should be even (so that the folds go to the wall).
The length of the ribbon is equal to the length of the fabric minus 10 cm.

Iron the hem of the top of the curtain and place the tape just above the hem. Baste or pin with pins. Then attach to the fabric with two seams: top and bottom. If the fabric is thin, then it is better to make the hem larger, in several layers.

Twist the fabric twice, and sew with a straight stitch, trying to capture the right and left edges of the ribbon with rings.

Then - carefully cut the fabric inside the rings.

Flip to the right side and insert the rings, tucking the edges of the fabric under them.
It remains a little - to process the bottom edge of the curtains. Trust your husband to hang the curtains!

How to sew a pelmet. Lambrequin pattern.

She herself recently pestered acquaintances with the question: how to sew a lambrequin. A friend gave me a pattern. I sewed it, it turned out well.

Found cool pattern "svaga". Everything is clearly lined and written here, for those who are especially gifted, like me =) I think this pattern will suit you and you can sew a lambrequin for yourself without any problems.

In finished form, such a set of curtains with a lambrequin will come out. Not bad, right?
. You can choose any fabric. In this option, all the details of the curtains and lambrequin are clearly visible.

Where does the process of creating curtains actually begin? First you need to think about the design of the curtains, and then pick up curtain fabrics, cornices and decorative ornaments, while taking into account the overall interior of the room. However, for talented people this is unlikely to be an obstacle. So, if you have creativity, design skills or just a great desire to update the interior of your home, as well as a sewing machine, threads, needles and other little things, then you can safely start.
First of all, you need to clearly imagine what kind of future curtains will have, and then make a sketch, you can use a pencil on paper. By the way, in order not to fool yourself with the creation sketch(not everyone has artistic ability) ready-made patterns easy to find for free in a magazine or on sites that specialize in tailoring curtains. After choosing a suitable model, we buy the required amount of fabric, and then strictly adhering to the recommendations, we sew curtains. For those who have certain skills, the process is not difficult. However, any creative process is always joy and pleasure.
You can go the other way, that is, do without any patterns. It is enough just to take measurements of the window (length and width), then, taking into account the length of the curtains, calculate the amount of fabric required for sewing.
Although modern fabrics shrink already during the production process, it is still better to verify this personally. Therefore, before starting work with the fabric, it is advisable to wet it, and then, if necessary, carefully iron it.

For cutting curtains, the fabric must be laid out, for example, on the floor, and the front side should be at the top. Then you need to determine the bottom edge of the curtain and align it by drawing a line perpendicular to the side edge of the fabric. Cut the fabric along this line. Next, set aside the length of the curtain determined in advance and cut the fabric along a line perpendicular to the side edge. The second part of the curtain should be cut out in the same way, having previously joined the pattern.
After the two panels are ready, they must be hemmed from the bottom, and a special tape is sewn to the upper edge, on which there are loops for attaching the curtains to the eaves. In addition, ready-made curtains can be decorated with frills, lace, tassels, and elegant braid.
When sewing curtains, there are three main sizes that are crucial for choosing a style and style. The curtain can have three lengths - A, B, C. Length A - to the window sill, length B - 15 cm below the window sill, length C - to the floor level. Therefore, depending on what kind of curtains you plan to sew, it is necessary to accurately and carefully measure the length of the fabric.

Most simple curtains are a flat panel of such transparent fabrics as veil, cambric, muslin, cotton. Such curtains are draped with a special braid and hung on a light wooden or metal cornice. The main thing when sewing a thin curtain is to correctly calculate its length. A curtain made of a denser and more opaque fabric can be decorated with a decorative ribbon or border.
If the room for which you decide to sew curtains is decorated in country style, then you can create excellent curtains using the patchwork (patchwork) technique. This is especially convenient for housewives who are engaged in needlework, since multi-colored patches will be needed for sewing curtains. You can also use fabric that has already been used. First, pieces of fabric need to be washed and ironed, then cut out with a stencil, and then sewn together. It is most convenient to work with fabrics of the same type. In patchwork, the pattern, as a rule, consists of parts of the same size and shape, for example, squares, rectangles or other shapes. To make the curtain durable, the patches sewn into the cloth are attached to the lining. Ribbons, braid and cords are used to decorate such curtains.
Art Nouveau fans can easily create suitable curtains that are distinguished by a fairly simple cut. For sewing such curtains, you will need a capron or nylon of bright colors and a metal cornice with tips in the form of an arrow, a cone, etc. The main plot of the design of Art Nouveau curtains is asymmetry, as well as light and sophisticated draperies. The canvas of airy fabric, without being fixed, simply pounces on the cornice, twisting around it like a graceful wave. In addition, an Art Nouveau curtain can be made from an ordinary rectangular piece of light fabric, pulled together with a cord or ribbon at the level of the window sill and secured on either side with a holder.
For creating classic curtains it will take a lot of attention and work, since such a curtain consists of three components - a thick curtain, a light curtain and
lambrequin. The main task when sewing classic curtains is to make the right pattern, and then follow the sewing recommendations exactly. Although the creation of a complex curtain will take you some free time, but it will be the work of your own hands, which is especially expensive and valuable.

If you decide to sew curtains yourself or you are going to order their tailoring in the salon, but decided not to invite the designer to your house, you need to measure the curtains.
Proper sizing of curtains is extremely important, because even a mistake of 2-3 cm can spoil the whole picture. If you are going to order tailoring of curtains in the salon, keep in mind that when placing an order you will be asked to put your signature in order to certify the correctness of your measurements.
Carefully check that the manager placing the order indicated exactly the dimensions that you named. If the curtains, sewn, according to the sizes indicated in the order form do not suit you, then changing the size of the model will be made out by a separate order and paid separately.
To prevent this from happening, it is enough to know a few simple rules for sizing curtains. First, in order to measure curtains, be sure to install the curtain rod first - accurate measurements can only be obtained when the curtain rod is installed.

In order to measure the height of the curtains, take measurements from the cornice hook to the floor in three or more places. This is necessary in order to exclude the curvature of the floor and ceiling, if the dimensions are the same, subtract from the result the distance by which the curtains should rise from the floor. To measure the width of curtains, measure the distance between the extreme positions of the curtain rod hooks. If you plan to sew curtains with variable heights (for example, "Arch"), mark two or more height points - a bottom edge point, a top rise point, etc.

If you have an inclined cornice installed above the window (as a rule, this window design option is found on stairs, or country houses and cottages in rooms under the roof), you will need to take the following measurements: the length of the cornice, and the length of the cornice in a straight line.

If the cornice itself has the shape of an arch, you will need to remove the pattern.

If you decide to sew curtains yourself, first of all you need to calculate the fabric
To do this, you need to decide on the choice of fabric and clarify its width.
Drapery fabrics and tulle are available in widths of 1.50 m (options from 1.40 to 1.60) or heights of 2.80 (options from 2.70 to 3.20 m). As a rule, designers try to avoid fabrics with a width of 1 ,50 m., because, other things being equal, curtains sewn from a fabric 2.80 m high are more economical. In addition, it is simply impossible to carve out many curtain elements from narrow fabric. Therefore, we will calculate the fabric for curtains based on a height of 2.80 m.
And so, in order to calculate the amount of fabric that will go to the manufacture of curtains, you need to know the width of the cornice. If the fabric is dense enough and has a large pronounced pattern, it is enough to take one and a half widths of the cornice, that is, the width of the cornice must be multiplied by 1.5. For example, the width of the cornice is 3.00 m., 3 x 1.5 = 4.5 m. We will need fabric. Immediately it is worth mentioning that this is the most economical, but far from the most aesthetic option.
A curtain laid in a bow fold or on a special braid will look much more beautiful. The bow pleat can be laid starting from double the width along the cornice, but the most advantageous result is achieved when the width of the cornice is exceeded by 2.5 - 2.7 times. That is, with a cornice width of 3.00 m - 3 x 2.7 = 8.1 m of fabric. If you plan to collect fabric on a special mounting tape, ask the sales assistant how much fabric you need to take for the tape you have chosen. In any case, do not forget to add another 10-20 cm to the footage you received for processing the side seams.
Thus, you can calculate the fabric that will be needed for sewing shadow curtains and inner tulle. In order to make a calculation of the fabric that will go to the lambrequin, you will need to calculate the fabric consumption for each element separately and then sum it up. A standard swag takes 1.5 m of fabric, with a fabric height of 2.80, out of 1.50 m It is possible to carve out two standard swags. To calculate the fabric consumption for de jabot, you need to take a piece of fabric equal to one height and width, taken in three times + allowances for seams. For example, we will have a dejabot 1.20 m high and 0.30 m wide, we will need: 0.3 x 3 + 0.1 = 1.00 m. If we sew from fabric 2.80 m high. - 1 m will be enough for two dejabots.
Calculating fabric consumption for Roman blinds and Japanese panel curtains is much easier. Since the curtains are not pleated, simply take the width (or height, if the fabric is 1.50 m) of the curtain and add seam allowances. But we need to keep in mind one not unimportant point: if we sew panels of fabric with a large, pronounced pattern, 1.50 m wide, we will need to take additional footage to adjust the pattern.
If the model has a rigid lambrequin on a bondo or glued fabric, take the size of the finished lambrequin, add allowances for the seams and add 20 - 30 cm to fit the fabric on the glued fabric. For example, if the lambrequin is 3.00 x 0.50 m wide. 3 + 0.2 + 0.3 = 3.50 m. in height, while leaving a lunge from a height of 2.80 m. - 1.20 m. = 1.60 m.
If you are not embarrassed by the seams on the lambrequin, or they can be closed with other elements, such as a swag, then you can calculate the fabric consumption for a hard lambrequin as follows: 3.00 m x 2: 2.80 m (fabric height) \u003d 2.14 - Round up to the nearest integer - we need 3 lambrequin heights. (0.50 m. + 0.2 m.) x 3 \u003d 2.10 m. of fabric will go to a hard lambrequin with a seam.

FABRIC CONSUMPTION CALCULATION:

length:

Decide on the length of the curtain: it can be on the floor (do not reach the floor level by 13 mm), be 8 cm below the window sill, or be flush with the window sill (the length is measured from the cornice to the window sill). At this stage, the length does not include a drawstring allowance at the top and a hem allowance along the bottom line.

WIDTH
Measured along the side borders of the eaves. Lay the allowance for the entry of the canvases in the center. If the window is close to the corner, then the width is measured taking into account the distance from the window to the corner. If it is less than 20 cm, then you will not have enough space between the wall and the window to open the curtains normally, so think about the option when one panel hangs on the other side.

CURTAINS:
The fluffiness of the curtain is determined by the density of the fabric and the type of upper drawstring. For example, deep narrow pleats will require 3-3.5 fabric widths, while inverted-V pleats will require 2 ¼ widths.
The general rule is: dense fabrics have a splendor ratio of 2:1. medium density fabrics - 2.5:1, light fabrics - 3:1.

CONNECTION OF CURTAIN PANELS BY LENGTH
Sometimes sewing curtains involves connecting several canvases along the length. When you make calculations, round up the value. For example, if the window is 220 cm wide and you want 2 ¼ fluff, you will need 495 cm of fabric divided into two 248 cm strips. With a fabric width of 140 cm, the required width for each canvas would be 1.8 panels.
Rounding up, we get 2 panels per canvas (in this amount we can include allowances for side hem and connecting seams).

CURTAINS ON THE CURTAINS, HIM, REPEAT THE PATTERN
Before determining the right amount of fabric for sewing curtains, you will have to take into account such factors as pattern repetition, the type of drawstring on the top of the curtains and the hem allowance. The size of the pattern is determined by the boundaries beyond which the pattern is repeated. The size of the pattern is either calculated independently, or indicated on the coupon-description of the fabric. Add a pattern size for each desired length to get the desired panel size.
Drawstring on the top of the product. Add double the width of the drawstring (it varies from 2.5 cm to 20 cm). The inverted-V drawstring width is 10 cm, so the total amount of material used will be 20 cm. The length of the drawstring will be equal to the total width of the product plus 15 cm for hem.

If you decide to design the curtains yourself and not spend money on expensive equivalents in the store, take up sewing curtains with your own hands. So you can not only take into account all your wishes, but also improve your own seamstress skills. Sewing curtains with your own hands is not difficult - just remember the tips and advice outlined in this article.

Choosing a material

The choice of textiles depends on two main criteria: the size of the room and its purpose. In the case of a large room, you can choose velvet, taffeta, poplin, silk or velvet fabric. You can make a beautiful curtain by adding lambrequins or intricate folds. The downside of this luxury is the careful maintenance, which requires additional effort and time.

For a smaller room, choose a simpler option so that window decorations do not take up much space and are not conspicuous. Natural fabrics will cope with this task, especially if you choose desaturated light colors. They will make the room visually more spacious.

Make sure the fabric you choose will not lose color after washing and will not fade in the sun.

Kitchen curtains should transmit light well, so choose a light, airy fabric - organza or tulle will do. If you need to sew curtains in the hall or bedroom, then try to make the material and style of the fabric harmoniously fit into the interior of the room.

Most owners choose dense fabrics in warm colors, because such rooms require an atmosphere of calm and security. The choice also depends on the style in which the interior is made.

Getting Started

In the process of work, you will need the following things:

  • sewing machine;
  • deliberately selected material;
  • scissors;
  • threads in the color of the fabric;
  • iron;
  • pencil or piece of chalk;
  • roulette.

The first stage of work - a sketch

However, the latter option is not recommended if you need a curtain for the kitchen, as it will often get dirty and washed. Consider also what the finished product will be attached to, because the processing of one of the edges depends on it.

The width of the fabric is equal to the width of the cornice, to which about 4 cm should be added for free positioning. For a pattern with pleats, the same measurements are taken and then multiplied by 2. An additional 8-16 cm is usually required to be added to the length, depending on the material.

When the calculations are made, draw a sketch with the dimensions indicated on it. Remember: it is preferable not to experiment with sewing too difficult models with a lack of experience.

The second stage of work - cutting

First, you should check the material for defects or creases, it is advisable to smooth out future curtains. If you are sewing from a fabric that shrinks when washed (usually cotton or blends), you need to wash and iron it before forming the pattern.

Lay out the prepared material on a flat, flat surface: on a table or on the floor. Next, with a simple pencil or chalk, draw the markings indicated on the sketch.

In order not to distort the dimensions exactly, it is better to pull out one or two longitudinal and transverse threads from the fabric. Carefully cut off unnecessary parts.

The third stage of work - sewing

Iron the pre-measured seam allowances on the wrong side for convenience. Before stitching, the allowances must be folded inward again to make a double hem, and then ironed again. Only then can the edges be stitched.

Make sure that the edges of the material are stretched, otherwise the seams will turn out uneven and wavy.

When sewing curtains, you need to set a long line of 4-6 mm on a typewriter. The upper collar is usually 2.5 cm, the lower collar is slightly larger (about 4 cm). To do this, it is necessary to make allowances of 5 and 8 cm, respectively, since the edges are stitched with a double turn.

Sewing curtain tape

Once you've finished with the edges of the curtain, move on to the curtain tape, which will allow you to secure the window decor to the cornice. This is the final stage of tailoring. The braid must also be ironed with steam beforehand to avoid shrinkage. Curtain tape is sewn with two seams, but a wide tape may require more stitches.

The braid of your choice must be applied to the stitched top edge and turned with the loops down. Position the foot of the sewing machine so that it sews the braid evenly and without gaps. In the case of a transparent material, this will not be as difficult as with a dense one.

There are several ways to help do this correctly: you can draw a line or use guiding objects (for example, a ruler). It is necessary to stitch from the front side of the curtain, as in this case the seam will look neater.

When the curtain braid is sewn, it should be cut with an allowance of about 2 cm. We turn the edge to the wrong side and iron along the fold. Then turn the curtain over so that the tape is at the bottom, and sew with a double hem.

Try to keep at the edge of the product. As a result, the very first line should not be visible on the front side, as it is covered with tape.

Work completed. Hang your finished curtains on a rod and make sure they are perpendicular to the floor and free from defects. If everything is in order - your curtains are ready! You can view photos of sewn curtains and make sure that they are no different from purchased ones.
