1. Itok, what to run it?

In general, this review is for those who have already purchased a 3D pen. But even if you are only planning to make a purchase of this gadget, the information read here will not be superfluous. (everything about how to choose the right pen, we wrote ) In this, let's talk about consumables, namely plastic, which, in fact, draws our 3D pen. As a rule, plastic is sold in two versions:

Sets starting

Mono sets, i.e. those cases when the package goes

If you are a beginner and have not yet decided on the style and theme in which you would like to draw, we recommend taking sets starting from 10 colors. Thus, you get a fairly voluminous palette to start creativity, and in the near future you will be able, by experience, to determine which colors will be in demand for you and which will not. Or, on the contrary, buy in the future an even more extended, in terms of palette, set of plastic. As a rule, they are sold in a coil, packed in a film or a cardboard box. The weight of the package can vary from 100 grams to 300. In rare cases, the manufacturer puts more plastic in the package.

2. What is plastic

For 3D work Handles use special plastic. The most common types of plastic are , , . They fit 3 D handles of almost all modifications, but each has its own technical characteristics and some differences. Which of the materials is most preferable for drawing 3 D handle? To answer this question, let's take a closer look at each type of plastic, its advantages and features.

- plastic that has received the greatest distribution in many areas of production, science and everyday life. Made of plastic ABS produce a huge number of products, ranging from toys for children, parts for designers and ending with elements in the automotive and even aircraft industries. By the way, the body of the majority 3 D handles are also made from ABS plastic (except , the body of which is made of metal).

At the heart of ABS The plastics contain compounds of petrochemical origin, due to which the plastic has high strength and does not decompose. Products drawn ABS plastic, very durable they can be washed, including detergents.

Melting temperature ABS plastic - 210-235°C. When drawing ABS plastic emits a slight smell, which is not harmful to health, but we recommend using it in a well-ventilated area!

ABS or!

- non-toxic and completely harmless material. It is often used in medicine, as well as in the production of various packaging and containers. PLA plastic - biodegradable material that is made from natural raw materials - sugar cane or corn. But be careful - products drawn by 3 D handle made of PLA plastics are not durable. Firstly, the plastic is quite fragile, hitting or dropping the product can easily damage it. Secondly, since the plastic is made from natural raw materials, in a year it will begin to gradually decompose.

Melting temperature PLA plastic - 160 - 210°C. Plastic does not harm the environment; when heated, it does not emit toxic substances and an unpleasant odor.

PLA plastic Master-Plaster is presented in a wide range of colors - tryor!

. The group of flexible materials includes SBS plastic, uh elastic plastic and flexible plastic.

SBS plastic - strong, elastic plastic that does not break when bent. Elongation at break of plastic SBS > 250%. Plastic does not emit an unpleasant odor when heated, it is non-toxic. SBS plastic is used to make medical devices, children's toys, and even food containers. SBS plastic flexible and elastic, will not break when dropped. Melting temperature SBS plastic 200-220°C.

SBS plastic Master-Plaster is presented in the following colors: , , , , .

Elastic plastichas a high stretch ratio - can stretch up to 650%. Resistant to chemicals, impact resistant, non-toxic and odorless when heated.

Elastic plastic Master-Plaster is available in the following colors:, , And .

flexible plastic has a high coefficient of elasticity. Model of elasticity of flexible plastic - 3 MPa, tensile strength 29 MPa. The flexible plastic is also completely safe for drawing, does not emit unpleasant odors and is non-toxic.

Flexible plastic Master-Plaster is available in the following colors:, , And .

3. Achildren can? Need to! And from what age?

Children need!

And this is a completely conscious statement. We all know and understand how important it is for a child to express his inner world. To realize children's fantasies, we offer them different options for creativity. Such as modeling from plasticine, applications, drawing and so on. All this allows our children to embody emotions, thoughts and desires.

Now imagine the delight a child will experience when the drawing he drew becomes a toy, a keychain on his mother's keys or a pattern on a photo frame with a family photo! Drawing itself, even with familiar tools (pencil, watercolor, etc.), already develops a lot of positive skills in a child. For example, to see and distinguish between shades, to position objects in space (the neck of a vase, the bottom of a vase, a person stands on the surface upside down, and so on), to notice details, perseverance, attentiveness, patience, you can list endlessly.

And what can we say, if it's not just drawing, but drawing in 3D. Now let's think at what age a child can use a 3D pen. Parents should answer this question for themselves. The manufacturer, as a matter of safety, generally does not recommend the use of a 3D pen under the age of 7 without the presence of an adult. Then it's up to you to decide.

4. Ibuy! What to look out for?

First of all, pay attention to the price. The average price for the same type of plastic from different brands may differ. And sometimes at times! Don't look at the prices - look at the grams. In one store, plastic can be 100 grams, in another 300, respectively, the price will be different. Many sellers "forget" to indicate grams next to the price. So be careful, our advice to you.

5. Howsave money on plastic?

Agree that when choosing a 3D pen, we did not think much about consumables for it?

Almost every manufacturer of 3D pens puts one or more rolls of plastic into the box, but these are just starting samples, 20-25 grams each. Depending on the type of plastic (ABS, PLA or SBS, etc.), its footage can be from 2.5 to 5 meters. But often there are pen + plastic sets on sale, and a pleasant bonus of all this will be a total discount on both the pen and plastic together. It's quite decent though.

Plastic threads, at the moment, are produced from two types of plastics:

ABS (ABS) andPLA. What plastic to choose for a 3D pen? What plastic for a 3D pen is best for children's crafts?

Let's figure it out.

PLA (polyactide polymer) it is not very common in Ukraine, but it is the most famous of biological plastics. PLA It is produced from vegetable raw materials - corn, soybeans and others. During melting, it gives off an odor that resembles the smell of popcorn. PLA more fragile than ABS - plastic, but well suited for drawing spirals, curls and various roundness, jewelry. Melting point from 190 to 220 degrees (depending on the type) PLA deteriorates in conditions of high humidity, with prolonged exposure to sunlight. This type of plastic is also more prone to overheating during operation, which leads to loss of tightness and structural failure. This plastic is more sticky - it is well suited for decorating surfaces, volumetric painting, but paper drawing templates are not suitable for it, because it will easily stick to them and it will be impossible to remove pieces of paper from the drawing. Templates can be based on glossy and semi-gloss paper.

PLA also more suitable for drawing in the air as it cools down much faster than ABS.

Products from PLA can be translucent and bright neon colors, the range of ABS plastics is more restrained.

It is made on the basis of oil - a very durable and non-toxic polymer. It is from this type of plastic that the world famous LEGO constructor is made. Products from this plastic are harmless to children. It has a wide range of applications: from large automotive parts (bumpers, dashboards, interior trim parts, etc.) to SIM cards in phones. This plastic is better suited for beginners because it does not harden as quickly and products made from it are durable - as the plastic is hard, impact-resistant and rigid and has good flexibility. Melting point 225-250 degrees. This plastic has a low stickiness, so it can work with paper - it is better suited for drawing 3D models, and this is exactly what our children are so passionate about.

Giraffe recommends use both types of these plastics, since each of them has its own characteristics, described above. But at the same time, it is desirable to have a separate nozzle for each type of plastic, since the nozzle of a 3D pen can become clogged or fail, if this does not work out, then perhaps you should choose one option.

It's time to talk plastic!

IN 3D pens from the art workshop 3DPen-Art, several types of plastic thread are used. Our customers have a choice of which plastic to use - it can be ABS or PLA plastic. We will not go into details about the physical and chemical data of these types of plastics, but will concentrate on the features and "chips" when drawing with different types separately. And so let's get started:
ABS plastic(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) - this plastic is made from oil and very well resists aggressive environments (acids, alkaline environments, this plastic is also heat-resistant), non-toxic and durable polymer. Products from this plastic are harmless to children. It has a wide range of applications: from large car parts (bumpers, dashboards, interior trim parts, etc.) to SIM cards in your phones. This plastic can be recycled into other plastic lumber.
Now let's move on to using this plastic in 3D pen (3doodler) . This type of plastic is suitable for modeling complex, large or voluminous objects. You just need to remember that when this plastic is overheated, deformation of the drawn product may occur. P ABS eraser suitable for applying paint on it, for this you need to use acrylic or spray paints! This plastic is better suited at the initial stage of acquaintance with 3D pen (3doodler) , so to speak, “to fill your hand” and gain experience for working with the second type of plastic, which we will talk about later.
PLA plastic(polylactide polymer) - this plastic is produced from agricultural products such as (corn, sugar cane or soy), we are sure that this type of plastic will be appreciated by people who care about the environment and want to preserve the beauty of "Mother Nature". PLA plastic used in the production of: biodegradable packaging used in the pharmaceutical industry, disposable tableware, surgical suture, and much more. PLA plastic hardens faster than ABS plastic. The special difference between this plastic and ABS is that it is well suited for working with various types of materials (metal, wood, etc.). Another difference between this plastic and ABS, lies in its excellent ability to adhere to the applied surface, this can adversely affect the work with materials such as paper. When trying to separate this plastic from the paper, it is likely that pieces of paper will remain on the structure.
Now I’ll tell you for what needs this plastic is useful in 3D pen (3doodler) . This type of plastic can be used in decorating various surfaces. With good stickiness, it can be used to glue various elements, as shown in one of our videos. PLA plastic will be appreciated by artisans involved in the production of original jewelry, the production of wedding jewelry and the list can be continued indefinitely . PLA plastic, more flexible than ABS plastic and it is ideal for creating compositions with a lot of curved patterns. Because PLA plastic has good stickiness to various materials, imagine what a limitless niche it will open for people who love to decorate everything (phones, refrigerator wall, front door, etc.).

Everyone who has become a happy owner of a 3D pen invariably faces the question of choosing a material. It will be driven primarily by the technology used by the 3D pen. The list of materials that a particular 3D pen works with will be listed in the instructions for the device.

There are models that work according to the traditional plastic melting technology, and there are photopolymer handles. The raw material in the latter is a photopolymer resin, which hardens under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. The choice in this case will be clear. The most common 3D pens work with ABS and PLA plastic filaments. It is between these materials that the problem of choice may arise, since both differ in affordable cost. In particular, in the online store "3DMALL" you can find a rich selection of plastics for 3D pens in a wide range of colors.

ABS plastic: features and specifications ABS plastic is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a substance derived from petroleum. This type of plastic is the most popular. It is used to make SIM cards for phones, interior and decoration parts, car parts and much more. It is easier to say that it surrounds a person everywhere. ABS plastic for a 3D pen has the following characteristics:

  • non-toxicity;
  • products are safe for humans;
  • strength;
  • the possibility of staining with acrylic paints;
  • rigidity;
  • impact resistance;
  • ease of separation from paper;
  • glossy surface of products;
  • the ability to draw free-standing parts (vertical);
  • resistance to slight bending.

When working with a 3D pen that draws with ABS plastic, the smell of burnt plastic will come out. For this reason, work only in a well-ventilated area. In addition, ABS plastic cannot be called environmentally friendly. It is recycled like other plastics and does not biodegrade.

PLA plastic: features and specifications

PLA plastic is polylactide, which is made from sugar cane, corn or soybeans. Thus, this material is absolutely environmentally friendly and easily decomposes in nature. It is also widely used. Dishes, surgical threads, biodegradable containers, etc. are made from it. Often it is used in pharmacology. PLA plastic for a 3D pen has the following characteristics:

  • drawing sharp corners (less than 90 degrees);
  • high adhesion, thanks to which you can draw on glass, wood, metal, decorating them;
  • difficult separability from paper (traces may remain);
  • the ability to draw long lines;
  • hardening faster than ABS plastic;
  • high rigidity;
  • brittleness when bent;
  • environmental friendliness and safety.

PLA plastic is not highly resistant to water, sunlight. But the material is presented in a wide range of options, allowing you to choose not only the desired color, but also characteristics, in particular, you can find luminous PLA plastic. When melted, PLA releases an odor reminiscent of fried popcorn.

It is impossible to single out any material objectively as favorites. Most beginners use ABS plastic. PLA plastic allows you to draw more complex products with interesting geometry. When choosing, you need to be guided by the characteristics of the material and what you want to get in the end.

It is best to gain a little experience and try each material in action. So you can independently determine what material you need to draw a particular model.

This part of the article describes the most commonly used plastics for hot 3D pens with their advantages and disadvantages. The main characteristics of plastic materials and the area / scope of their application are also given.

ABS plastic

Structures made from ABS plastics, is distinguished by a fairly high reliability, since ABS plastics are distinguished by high strength and good flexibility, however, when heated, they emit volatile organic substances (VOCs), which are somewhat more toxic than PLA plastic fumes, although when the latter is heated above 200 degrees Celsius, it can become a source of toxic evaporation. ABS plastic doesn't stick well to surfaces. On the one hand, this is a plus, since it easily peels off from almost any surface, so you do not have to be afraid that you will damage the created product in the process of tearing it off the table, paper, cardboard or plastic stand without using additional tools in the form of a scalpel, knife or miniature crowbar. On the other hand, low adhesion to ABS plastic surfaces can create inconveniences, since a product that is not yet ready can begin to crawl on the table, so you have to hold or fix it, especially if you use two 3D pens at once, in Macedonian, so to speak.

The advantages of ABS plastic include:

- relatively low cost;

- dimensional stability before and after curing;

- quite high elasticity and impact resistance;

- non-toxic under normal conditions;

— durability;

- moisture resistance;

- a wide range of operating temperatures, heat resistance - up to 100-113 degrees Celsius, depending on the brand of ABS plastic;

- resistance to acid solutions (acid resistance) and inorganic salts;

— resistance to alkalis, detergents;

— resistance to fats, lubricants/oils (oil resistance), gasoline and hydrocarbons and most of their derivatives;

— smooth shiny or matte surface;

- soluble in acetone, which allows you to smooth the imposition of plastic threads on each other.

The main disadvantages of ABS plastic include:

- toxicity (formation of poisonous acrylonitrile vapors) when heated;

- reactions with organic compounds (for example, styrene is released when interacting with alcohol and alcohol-containing liquids) and medical biomaterial;

- poor resistance to direct sunlight and ultraviolet (UV radiation);

- solubility in benzene, acetone, aniline, ethyl chloride, ethylene chloride and some other chemical compounds;

- poor weather resistance;

— weak electrical insulating properties;

- it happens that it twists in the process of work;

- requires a heated surface with which the heated thread will come into contact.

If you are frightened by the shortcomings of ABS plastics, then for ABS plastic I would like to say that CDs and DVDs are made on its basis; cases of various tools (including power tools), household appliances, mixers, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, refrigerators, televisions and even batteries (including car and children's toys), plastic parts for the interior and exterior of cars, such as door trim, mirror housings, bumpers, door lining, interior parts and panels, wheel covers, radiator grilles.

PLA plastic

PLA plastic (PLASTIC, PLAstick, PLA-stick, PLA-stick) is made on the basis of natural annually renewable resources / components: corn or potato starch, soy protein, cellulose and other plant components by polycondensation of lactic acid and polymerization of lactide, so that it is environmentally friendly material, both in terms of properties and production cycle. When heated, Polyactide (PLA, PLA) does not have a pungent odor, like, for example, ABS plastic.

The advantages of PLA plastic include:

- non-toxic (if not heated above 200 degrees);

— wide color palette, including transparent plastic;

— dimensional stability, as well as at ABS plastic;

- low glass transition temperature (50-55 degrees) and softening of the thread, which reduces energy costs;

— smoothness of the surface of the finished product;

- easily metallized;

- does not curl like ABS plastic;

- low coefficient of friction, which makes it possible to manufacture bearings from it;

- does not require heating of the working surface of the table (the place of contact of the plastic with the supporting surfaces).

Of the shortcomingsPLA plastic can be noted as follows:

— higher price compared to ABS plastics;

- poor resistance to weathering, like ABS plastics;

- low service life of products - no more than 2 years due to the natural origin of raw materials and biodegradability of the material. At temperatures above 55 degrees Celsius and in a humid environment, the process accelerates;

- poorly glued;

- does not interact with acetone, which makes it difficult to smooth the created surface.

Flex plastic

Flex plastic is a flexible material similar in properties to solid silicone. Melting point similar to ABS plastics, high elasticity (flexibility and plasticity), impact resistance, resistance to oils, gasoline and solvents, high wear resistance, not amenable to machining. Can be glued using synthetic rubbers or a hot air gun.

Nozzle temperature: 220 - 250°C

Hot 3D pens have an auto-off function after a certain period of inactivity, such as 5 or 7 minutes.

Almost all models of hot pens are equipped with miniature fans that blow over the filament coming out of the nozzle for faster curing. In addition, most hot 3D pens have temperature controls that can adjust the temperature of the heating element that melts the incoming plastic.

Pens are sold both individually and as part of starter or pro kits containing various plastic rods that differ in color, type of plastic, may contain luminescent / fluorescent / glow in the dark sticks, etc.

Some models of 3D pens are equipped with an LCD display that allows you to control the heating temperature and the speed of feeding the plastic rod, in fact, controlling the speed of three-dimensional drawing.

Some 3D pens already have "tools" available, such as the 3Doodler footswitch, which is capable of adjusting the flow of plastic.

In the third part of this review article, we will talk about cold 3D pens:.
