Signs and symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis in pregnant women are different from the common cold. How long does pregnancy rhinitis occur and how long does it last? Consequences and preventive measures

In a strict medical sense, rhinitis of pregnancy is a chronic swelling of the nasal mucosa in a woman, leading to difficulty in nasal breathing and caused by hormonal changes in the body.

Actually, this disease differs from other types of rhinitis in its causes. For example, a typical acute rhinitis (cold) is caused by a weakened immune system and an increase in the activity of bacteria that are normally not pathogenic, viral rhinitis is caused by a viral infection, allergic - by substances to which the patient has hypersensitivity. That is, for all typical rhinitis, the causes are external - hypothermia, infection, allergens. Rhinitis of pregnant women is caused by internal causes and does not depend on what kind of air the patient breathes and whether she becomes infected with something from others.

Obviously, rhinitis in pregnant women can also be caused by the usual causes - infection, allergies, hypothermia, dirty air. That is, if a pregnant woman becomes infected with SARS, she will begin, like any other person. However, such a runny nose in medical science is not called rhinitis of pregnancy, since it is simply a viral rhinitis, which can equally well occur in men and children. And rhinitis of pregnant women is a disease that can develop only in women during the gestation period and is caused by causes that arise only when the woman's body is restructured during the development of the fetus.

Simply put, not every rhinitis during pregnancy is exactly rhinitis of pregnant women in the strict scientific sense of this term. Moreover, the symptoms of rhinitis of pregnant women differ from the signs of typical rhinitis.

Symptoms of pregnancy rhinitis

In its symptoms, rhinitis of pregnant women is similar to some forms of typical chronic rhinitis. Its most characteristic feature is nasal congestion, usually with rhinorrhea (an abundance of snot), with a normal general well-being of a woman. In case of illness, nasal breathing is simply disturbed:

  1. There is a feeling of excess mucus in the nose;
  2. In some cases, a large amount of snot really appears, sometimes, on the contrary, there are too few of them, not enough to fully moisturize the mucosa;
  3. The nasal passages can dry out (especially with active blowing), crusts and cracks appear in them, pain in the nose appears;
  4. It becomes difficult for a pregnant woman to breathe, her nose is especially stuffy in a dream due to the horizontal position of the body and the rush of blood to the head.

Normally, with rhinitis of pregnant women, the head can hurt only after physical exertion.

Because of the violation of nasal breathing, a pregnant woman may develop shortness of breath, sometimes she may experience headache attacks, but they usually disappear after rest and being in the fresh air.

“Who had rhinitis of pregnant women, tell me which doctor to go with him - to a ENT specialist, a gynecologist, an infectious disease specialist? The symptoms do not seem to be very severe - the nose is stuffy, snot, but there is no runny nose, I feel fine while I lie down and do not get out of breath. Is it worth going to the doctor at all in this case, or will it go away on its own?

Allah, from correspondence on the forum

Almost never, rhinitis in pregnant women does not spread to the pharynx or sinuses. For this reason, sinusitis, eustachitis or nasopharyngitis (posterior rhinitis) in pregnant women are almost always the result of viral or bacterial infections, but not hormonal rhinitis of pregnant women.

How to distinguish pregnancy rhinitis from other forms of the disease

The main distinguishing feature of rhinitis of pregnant women is the normal general condition of a woman. With this disease, body temperature does not rise, malaise does not appear, the woman does not feel overwhelmed, she does not have a headache, her appetite is not disturbed, and symptoms of intoxication of the body do not appear.

This is what makes it possible to distinguish between rhinitis of pregnant women and the usual viral one during primary diagnosis - with ARVI, the norm is a deterioration in well-being, intoxication of the body and an increase in temperature.

“Here, I just got back from the doctor. Diagnosis - vasomotor rhinitis of pregnant women. To understand what it means, is there such a disease at all? I know that rhinitis is like SARS, when you have a runny nose and stuffy nose. And here I don’t seem to have a temperature, so I feel fine, nothing hurts, only my nose does not breathe. That's all the symptoms. The doctor prescribed Nasonex at bedtime, Aqua Maris 3 times a day to wash the nose. Well, if Aqua Maris is understandable, some water with salt, then Nasonex scares me. Anyway, hormone spray…”

The disease differs from allergic rhinitis by the absence of pain in the eyes and rashes on the face and body. Also, with rhinitis of pregnant women, severe sneezing, typical of an allergic rhinitis, rarely develops.

High fever is a sign that a pregnant woman has infectious rhinitis

It is possible to distinguish rhinitis of pregnant women from a cold (nonspecific acute rhinitis) by the normal state of health of a woman, and 5-6 days after the onset of the disease, by the color and consistency of nasal mucus. With acute rhinitis at this time, it becomes thick, green or green-yellow, with rhinitis of pregnant women, it remains transparent and quite liquid throughout the illness.

It is much more difficult to distinguish rhinitis of pregnant women from various forms of chronic rhinitis - atrophic, hypertrophic, hyperplastic. The main symptom of rhinitis of pregnant women here is its onset precisely during the period of gestation, since other forms of the disease usually torment a woman even before pregnancy. That is, if before the start of pregnancy the patient did not have a chronic runny nose, and as the fetus developed, it appeared, we are most likely talking about rhinitis of pregnant women.

At the same time, if the patient suffered from chronic rhinitis before pregnancy, during the gestation period, rhinitis of pregnant women may overlap with it.

Only a specialist after examining the mucous membranes can clearly differentiate rhinitis of pregnant women from other forms of chronic rhinitis. By the nature of the inflammation and the appearance of the tissues, he will be able to exclude pathologies associated with atrophy, growth or degeneration of the nasal mucosa and make a reliable diagnosis. At home, it is almost impossible to distinguish pregnancy rhinitis from other forms of chronic rhinitis by the general symptoms alone.

Fundamentally, rhinitis of pregnancy differs from other forms of chronic rhinitis in that it does not lead to irreversible changes in the nasal mucosa. After its completion, the normal functioning of the nose is restored and no residual signs of the disease remain on the mucous membrane. On the contrary, with the same atrophic rhinitis, the mucosa can completely degenerate, with hypertrophic rhinitis it does not return to its normal state and nasal breathing is not restored.

Type of turbinates in vasomotor rhinitis

Since the treatment of different forms of rhinitis requires the use of different drugs, many of which are contraindicated in pregnancy, the first thing to do if you suspect pregnancy rhinitis is to see a doctor. There is nothing to worry about: nose examination and diagnostics usually do not require testing and are carried out quickly. But after that, the doctor will definitely be able to tell what the woman should do next.

Causes of the disease and the frequency of its occurrence

The cause of rhinitis during pregnancy is a change in the hormonal balance in a woman's body. Separate female sex hormones affect the degree of blood supply to the vessels of the nasal mucosa, stimulating blood flow into them. As a result, the same phenomenon occurs that is observed during inflammation: the mucous membrane swells and begins to produce more mucus, and the lumen of the nasal passages decreases.

The deeper reasons for the influence of hormones on the condition of the nasal mucosa have not been clearly defined. Scientists have several basic assumptions:

  1. Estrogens inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase, which leads to an increase in the level of acetylcholine in the body and swelling of the mucous membranes;
  2. Placental growth hormone directly affects the blood filling of peripheral blood vessels to increase blood flow in the placenta. Swelling of the nasal mucosa is a peculiar side effect of it;
  3. Progesterone reduces the tone of the smooth muscle cells of the vessels of the nasal mucosa, which leads to the expansion of the vessels themselves and to the swelling of the mucosa.

Today it is not known to what extent each of these factors affects the manifestation of rhinitis. Perhaps they all act simultaneously and equally.

Progesterone - a hormone that reduces the tone of vascular cells

In fact, rhinitis of pregnant women is a typical vasomotor rhinitis, since it is the vasomotor syndrome that is called the syndrome, in which the normal blood filling of the vessels is disturbed due to the activity of hormones. Only if, with typical vasomotor rhinitis, disturbances in the functioning of the body's internal secretion system (most often thyroid diseases) lead to a change in the hormonal balance, then vasomotor rhinitis during pregnancy is a consequence of changes in the body caused by pregnancy itself.

On a note

It is not a fact that if a woman had vasomotor rhinitis before pregnancy, it will intensify during gestation. This is possible, as is possible, on the contrary, its termination due to compensation for abnormal amounts of hormones, and possibly the absence of any changes. That is, chronic vasomotor rhinitis and pregnancy are not related to each other.

It is important to understand that pregnancy is not necessarily accompanied by rhinitis. According to statistics, in different countries from 5 to 32% of pregnant women suffer from it, that is, in most women it does not develop at all. At the same time, the likelihood of its development increases significantly if a pregnant woman:

  • Smokes - among women who smoke, 69% suffer from rhinitis of pregnant women;
  • Suffering from allergic rhinitis, even seasonal;
  • Suffering from sinusitis;
  • Lives in areas with highly polluted air.

Neither body weight, nor the age of the woman, nor the weight of the fetus affect the incidence of rhinitis in pregnant women.

How long does pregnancy rhinitis occur and how long does it last?

There is no strict relationship between the timing of pregnancy and the incidence of rhinitis. According to statistics in Russia, rhinitis develops:

  • After 12 weeks - in 27% of pregnant women;
  • After 20 weeks of pregnancy - in 37% of women;
  • After 30 weeks - in 40% of women;
  • After 36 weeks - in 42% of pregnant women.

Usually the disease lasts 3-4 weeks, sometimes - up to two months and ends on its own. In some cases, if rhinitis develops in the later stages, it lasts until the birth itself and sometimes - within 2 weeks after the birth of the child. If the symptoms of rhinitis have not gone away within these terms, it is most likely not about vasomotor rhinitis of pregnant women, but about a different type of disease.

If a runny nose during pregnancy worsens on the street, most likely it is associated with an allergy.

If rhinitis begins before 5-6 months of pregnancy inclusive, you can expect that it will stop manifesting itself before the pregnant woman needs to prepare for the trip to the hospital. If the disease began at a later date, it is worth taking a certificate from the doctor in advance that it is not infectious rhinitis, so as not to get into the infectious diseases department in the maternity hospital.

Rhinitis of pregnant women very rarely begins in the first weeks of pregnancy, since hormonal changes during this period are not yet so pronounced. Therefore, by the way, this disease should not be considered as a sign of pregnancy: usually, by the time rhinitis begins, a woman, by many other signs, understands that she is pregnant.

Situations are not known when rhinitis of pregnant women would develop and end several times in one pregnancy. In such a situation, we are usually talking about allergic rhinitis.

Why is this disease dangerous?

Rhinitis of pregnant women is theoretically dangerous because with it the body of a pregnant woman often finds herself in conditions of hypoxia. If a woman is not trained and her lungs are not voluminous enough, even minor physical exertion with a stuffy nose leads to shortness of breath and dizziness. Of course, a lack of oxygen can affect the development of the fetus, and the harder it is for a woman to breathe, the more pronounced this effect.

However, in a normal healthy woman, rhinitis during pregnancy does not affect the health of the fetus. The real danger is this disease for women suffering from bronchial asthma - in their case, breathing problems can lead to impaired fetal development, in rare situations - to the threat of abortion.

Also, rhinitis of pregnant women contributes to the development of arterial hypertension, insomnia, chronic fatigue, but only if pregnant women have other factors predisposing to the development of these diseases.

Breathing problems often lead to the fact that a pregnant woman cannot sleep normally.

Rhinitis of pregnant women in the early stages is almost completely safe. In the later stages, the placement of a pregnant woman in the infectious ward of a maternity hospital is considered a big nuisance, when doctors regard rhinitis itself as a viral disease. To prevent this from happening, you should get a certificate from the attending physician in advance about the diagnosis of the disease and the absence of infection in the pregnant woman.

Treatment of rhinitis of pregnant women

The main problem in the treatment of rhinitis during pregnancy is that its cause, in principle, cannot be eliminated by any drugs. Until the nasal mucosa adapts to the new hormonal balance, a woman will have a runny nose all the time, and various symptomatic remedies - drops, sprays, washes - will only have a temporary effect. Therefore, rhinitis of pregnant women is a disease that cannot be eliminated and that you just need to wait out, if necessary, alleviating your condition in the most difficult periods with the help of medicines.

In addition, most of the symptomatic treatment of rhinitis during pregnancy is prohibited due to their possible undesirable effects on the fetus. Including the most popular vasoconstrictor drops and sprays are prohibited.

As a result, the treatment of rhinitis during pregnancy is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The necessary measures are taken to normalize the condition of the nasal mucosa - rinsing with saline is carried out, the pregnant woman spends as much time as possible in the fresh air, in the room where she rests and sleeps, optimal microclimate conditions are maintained - air temperature is within 19-21 ° C, humidity - 55-75%. With such measures, even with rhinitis, the nose will breathe, albeit not as well as before the illness;
  2. The head of the bed rises 10-15°, which will reduce swelling of the nose at night;
  3. During periods when the nose does not breathe at all, safe drops and sprays are used to relieve swelling. If the nose is completely blocked at night, the funds are instilled into the nose before going to bed.

That is, the tactic here is to reduce the severity of the symptoms of the disease as much as possible, and only in critical periods simply stop them with medicines.

Galazolin, like other decongestants, is contraindicated during pregnancy!

Rhinitis in pregnant women should be treated with drops based on glucocorticoid steroids. These funds are as safe as possible, when used in permitted doses, they practically do not penetrate into the bloodstream and do not affect the fetus. These include:

  • Nasonex - a spray based on mometasone;
  • Fluticasone - spray with the same active ingredient;
  • Alcedin - a drug based on beclomethasone;
  • Budoster - approved for use during pregnancy under medical supervision;
  • Tafen Nasal - in accordance with the instructions during pregnancy is prohibited, but in principle it is an analogue of Budoster, and therefore is often prescribed during gestation.

These sprays and drops for rhinitis in pregnant women allow you to completely remove the swelling of the nasal mucosa within a few hours. Their action after instillation lasts from 6 to 24 hours, depending on the severity of the disease and the reaction of the mucosa itself to them, and therefore it is enough to drip them only before a night's sleep.

Nasonex is one of the sprays that have not been found to have side effects on the fetus when used in pregnant women.

It is impossible to use vasoconstrictor or antihistamine drops for rhinitis in pregnant women. In rare cases, a doctor may prescribe phenylpropanolamine (Trimex) or phenylephrine (Nazol Kids, Adrianol) products as a last resort. Usually without their use it is quite possible to do without.

To wash the nose with rhinitis, saline is used (a teaspoon of salt per liter of boiled water), or its analogues - Aqua Maris, Salin, Marimer, Humer. When washing, excess snot is removed from the nose, the mucous membrane is moistened and breathing is normalized.

“As I understand it, getting rid of rhinitis of pregnant women will not work. The doctor prescribed Tafen Nasal, saline solution in the nose, more liquid))) It is clear that these are only temporary solutions, they cannot be treated, so I asked him then how long I would walk with a clogged nose. He said that it was for a month and a half, but, pah-pah, it took three weeks. She treated with the same Tafen Nazalem, but rarely, when the nose did not breathe at all. So I got by without medication. Which is what I advise you."

Anna, from forum posts

It is practically useless to use inhalations, homeopathic remedies, drops based on essential oils for rhinitis of pregnant women - they will not affect the patient's condition, but they can also cause various side effects. All the more useless and undesirable for this disease are drops with antibiotics, antiviral and immunomodulating agents.

Rinsing the nose with saline is a useful procedure in any case.

In any case, before treating rhinitis during pregnancy, it is necessary to consult a doctor to diagnose the disease, assess the general condition and choose the most safe and effective means.

Prevention of rhinitis during pregnancy

It is impossible to protect yourself from the development of rhinitis during pregnancy. Whether it appears or not will depend on how the body reacts to hormonal changes during the development of the fetus, and such a reaction can be quite pronounced both in healthy women and in those predisposed to diseases of the nose and sinuses.

Nevertheless, if you do not smoke, you can reduce the risk of rhinitis during pregnancy, go in for sports, especially those types of it that require enhanced aerobic training (running, swimming, rowing, cycling), strengthen the immune system, and prevent infectious rhinitis and sinusitis from becoming chronic. forms, observe the hygiene of the nasal cavity and avoid frequent breathing of dry, dusty air. With such measures, even the resulting rhinitis will proceed unnoticed and will not cause significant trouble to the pregnant woman.

Waiting for a meeting with a baby is a time filled not only with happiness, joy, but also with anxiety for a new life.
Runny nose during pregnancy: what to do if it appears, why does this condition haunt a huge percentage of expectant mothers and can it harm a child developing in the womb?

Determining the exact cause of a runny nose in a pregnant woman determines the tactics of treatment.

Runny nose during pregnancy - the influence of hormones

While waiting for the birth of a new life in the body of the expectant mother, the hormone progesterone reigns. It is thanks to him that the pregnancy is preserved. The same hormone contributes to an increase in the volume of fluid accumulated by certain tissues, including those located in the nasal cavity. Because of this, swelling occurs.

The sex hormone estrogen, in addition to promoting the active development of the fetus and placenta, also increases the thickness of the nasal mucosa. All this results in a runny nose during pregnancy, called "rhinitis of pregnancy." This condition is always accompanied by shortness of breath. Optional symptoms include the discharge of clear liquid mucus from the nasal cavity, a feeling of dryness in the nose, itching, sneezing.
Rhinitis of pregnant women most often appears at 13 weeks of gestation or more and resolves after delivery.

Runny nose during pregnancy - increased susceptibility to diseases

Without exception, all expectant mothers have reduced immunity. This measure is necessary to preserve the pregnancy, since the carrier's body considers the embryo as a foreign body. But due to a decrease in immunity, the body becomes more vulnerable to infections of various origins.
An increase in temperature, a disturbing runny nose and sore throat during pregnancy are typical symptoms of acute respiratory infections.

Runny nose during pregnancy - an allergic reaction

Profuse, watery, colorless nasal discharge may well be caused by an allergy. Allergic rhinitis is usually accompanied by sneezing, watery eyes, itching, burning in the nasal cavity. Often seasonal.
Expectant mothers owe the tendency to develop allergies to hormonal changes. It is because of it that the body can react unpredictably even to familiar products and phenomena.

It is noteworthy that the condition of women who suffered from allergies even before conception usually improves during the gestation period due to the production of the hormone cortisol that suppresses the negative reactions of the body.

Runny nose during pregnancy - the appearance / presence of problems with the nasal cavity

The curvature of the nasal septum, the presence of tumors, polyps contribute to the appearance of a runny nose.

Severe runny nose during pregnancy: harm

  • Infectious processes, a symptom of which is often rhinitis, can adversely affect the course of pregnancy.
  • Runny nose and nasal congestion during pregnancy reduces the amount of oxygen supplied to the mother and fetus.
  • Medications for the treatment of the common cold may be unsafe for the fetus.

How to cure a runny nose during pregnancy

In the fight against any kind of runny nose, it is important that the air is humidified, wet cleaning is carried out daily. A future mother suffering from rhinitis will be more comfortable sleeping on a high pillow.

Sprays/ cold drops during pregnancy

Vasoconstrictors:

  • Most nasal drops and sprays have a vasoconstrictive effect, which relieves swelling of the mucous membrane and restores nasal breathing. But it is very undesirable for expectant mothers to use the funds of this group, and some are completely prohibited. The reason is that with abundant use, the vasoconstrictor effect extends to the body as a whole. Including there is a narrowing of the blood vessels that connect the mother and the unborn baby. And this is fraught with the development of hypoxia. Therefore, vasoconstrictors are used only in cases where other treatment has failed.
  • During pregnancy, medications based on xylometazoline are prohibited for use: Otrivin, Galazolin, Evkazolin Aqua, Farmazolin, Rhinorus, Dlyanos and others.
  • In extreme cases, drugs based on oxymetazoline are allowed: Nazivin, Afrin, Nazol, Nesopin. It is better to give preference to the children's dosage: it will be much more difficult to overdo it with it. Frequency of use: 1-2 times per day. Doctors advise using vasoconstrictors for no longer than 3-7 days.

Saline solutions:

  • Salt solutions are hypertonic, isotonic, hypotonic.
  • The concentration of sodium chloride in hypertonic solutions is more than 1% ("Humer Hypertonic").
  • Isotonic solutions of sodium chloride 0.9% (saline, "Aquamaris") are called. Their Ph is close to natural for humans.
  • Hypotonic - solutions, the sodium concentration in which is less than 0.85% ("No-Salt", "Salin").
  • For the manufacture of these solutions, both sea and table salt can be used. Salt solution can be prepared with your own hands: for this, you need to dilute a teaspoon of salt in a liter of water.
  • Salt solutions moisturize the mucous membrane, thin the nasal mucus, promote healing of lesions in the nasal passages, and have an antiseptic effect. Runny nose in early pregnancy is best treated with saline solutions. They are guaranteed not to harm the unborn baby, they are not addictive.

Antiallergic drugs:

  • The range of antihistamines allowed for expectant mothers is small, since many medications in this group adversely affect the fetus. To select tactics for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, it is important to determine the allergen.
  • Often, the allergen enters the body through the nasal cavity. In such cases, it is especially important to carry out daily wet cleaning of the room, to humidify the air and the nasal cavity, saline solutions do an excellent job with the latter. During the flowering period of plants, it is advisable to wear a gauze bandage.
  • "Nazaval" and "Prevalin Allergy" - sprays from the common cold during pregnancy. They are safe because they do not contain active ingredients, their purpose is to cover the inner mucous surface with a thin, impermeable film for allergens.

  • Conditionally safe antiallergic drugs include locally acting hormonal agents based on mometasone (Nasonex, Nosefrin).
  • Preparations based on cromoglycic acid ("KromoGEKSAL", "Kromoglin") with caution can treat a runny nose during pregnancy from the 2nd trimester.
  • Azelastine-based medications (Allergodil) have been shown to have a negative effect on the fetus, so their use for the treatment of the common cold during pregnancy and in the 3rd trimester is contraindicated.

"Miramistin" from the common cold during pregnancy

  • "Miramistin" is a multifunctional antiseptic with antimicrobial action. It is used in surgery, traumatology, obstetrics and gynecology (only douching is not allowed during gestation), combustiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, dentistry and otolaryngology.
  • Animal studies have shown no negative effect of the drug on offspring. It is safe to treat a runny nose during pregnancy in the 1st trimester with Miramistin.
  • "Miramistin" can be dripped 1-2 drops into each nostril up to 8 times a day. The course of such treatment lasts up to 7-10 days.
  • You can wash your nose with it 2-3 times a day, for this it is better to purchase the drug in the form of a spray.
  • In the presence of a nebulizer, inhalations can be carried out during pregnancy from a runny nose: a single dosage of the drug is 4 ml, the frequency of procedures is up to 4 times per day.

Homeopathy for a runny nose during pregnancy

  • Homeopathy has no proven effect. Scientists put its effectiveness on par with the placebo effect. This is due to the meager content, and sometimes even the absence of an active substance, failed clinical studies. However, all this does not prevent homeopathy from being popular with a huge number of people.
  • A weighty argument in favor of homeopathic remedies for rhinitis is safety. Homeopathic medicines "Delufen", "Euphorbium Compositum", "Cinnabsin" - what can treat a runny nose during pregnancy at any time.

Phytotherapy for the common cold during pregnancy

"Sinupret":

  • A popular drug for rhinitis, sinusitis, a component of the complex treatment of sinusitis is "Sinupret" - a combined herbal medicine.
  • During pregnancy, preference is given to the tablet form.
  • "Sinupret" dilutes mucus, promotes its discharge, has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, immunomodulatory effects.
  • Tablets are allowed at any gestational age. The drug, in general, is well tolerated, but due to the abundance of plant components of the composition, it can cause allergies. If the state of health worsens, the treatment is immediately stopped.

"Pinosol":

"Golden Star":

  • The famous "asterisk" during pregnancy from a cold is often advised. This is a natural multifunctional product. However, expectant mothers should use it with caution.
  • Menthol, camphor, mint, clove, eucalyptus and cinnamon essential oils contained in the asterisk are contraindicated for use by pregnant women.
  • The abundance of essential oils, beeswax can cause an allergy attack.
  • Before using the balm, it is worth doing an allergy test. To do this, apply a little balm with rubbing movements on the back of the arm, chest or leg. If after a day no red spots appear at the place of use, then the risk of having a negative reaction when using the ointment is minimal.
  • "Asterisk" can not be taken orally, applied to the mucous membranes.
  • To facilitate breathing, you can apply a tiny amount of the product to the wings of the nose or the area of the nasolabial triangle.

Folk remedies for the common cold during pregnancy

Traditional medicine is replete with remedies for the common cold, but not all can be used during pregnancy. So, recipes using black radish, aloe can cause uterine tone.

Chamomile infusion for a runny nose during pregnancy

  • It is good for washing the nose and instilling the nose.
  • To prepare the infusion, 1 tablespoon of dried flowers of the plant is poured into 125 ml of boiling water and infused for half an hour, it is best to use a thermos. The resulting infusion is filtered and, after cooling to a comfortable temperature, is ready for use.
  • For instillation, 4-6 drops of infusion are poured into each nasal passage, this can be done up to 6 times a day.
  • The shelf life of the product is 24 hours.

Steam inhalation from the common cold during pregnancy

  • For steam inhalations, calendula or chamomile flowers, eucalyptus leaves, thyme, large plantain leaves, coltsfoot (1-2 tablespoons of raw materials per glass of boiling water) are used.
  • You can use regular potatoes for inhalation. Unpeeled potatoes must be boiled, then remove the pan from the heat, cool the contents a little and inhale the resulting steam for 5 minutes. The procedure can be carried out several times a day.
  • To improve the effect, you should cover yourself with a thick towel.
  • Such inhalations are prohibited at elevated body temperature or purulent processes of the respiratory system.
  • Within half an hour after inhalation, you need to be in a warm room. It is strictly forbidden to go outside or into a well-ventilated room, eating, drinking, talking is not recommended.

Beetroot nasal drops for a runny nose during pregnancy

  • Nasal beetroot drops are good for thick mucus. 1-2 drops of juice squeezed from a raw vegetable are instilled into the nose several times a day.
  • You can also make medicine from boiled beets, for this, dilute the squeezed juice with water in a ratio of 1: 2. Bury no more than 4 times a day, 3-5 drops in each nasal passage.

Carrot-oil drops for a runny nose during pregnancy

  • Drops made from equal parts of carrot juice and olive oil do a good job with a runny nose. A single dose of the drug is 4 drops in each nostril, you can instill up to 6 times a day.

Conclusion

In the treatment of a runny nose during pregnancy, there are general recommendations, but it is extremely important to find out the cause of its occurrence.

The range of drugs prescribed to expectant mothers for the treatment of rhinitis is significantly narrowed. It is important to know what is possible from a runny nose during pregnancy, because even among the seemingly safe recipes of traditional medicine for getting rid of the disease, there are remedies that are strictly prohibited for expectant mothers.

Rhinitis is a disease that almost all people on earth periodically suffer from. That is why they treat him, albeit with special hostility, but mostly without anxiety - I will suffer for a week, and it will pass. What if one week doesn't work? Many women in position are destined for just such a fate. According to statistics, rhinitis of pregnant women occurs in more than 30% of them. And in the treatment, as you know, many medicinal and folk remedies are contraindicated for expectant mothers. The most unpleasant thing is that rhinitis of pregnant women begins most often by the end of the first trimester, and can last until the very birth.

Rhinitis of pregnant women for some women turns into a real torment. The constant not only interferes with the adequate perception of odors, but also makes it difficult to breathe, which affects the sleep of the expectant mother and leads to oxygen starvation. But it is during pregnancy that this parameter is very important, since the fetus receives oxygen from the maternal bloodstream. In addition, rhinitis of pregnant women is a certain barrier to the inhaled air, or rather to purify it, and therefore, the respiratory system remains without any protection against negative environmental factors.

All the fault is the changes in the pregnant woman. It is known that in the body of a woman "in position" there is an increased content of progesterone, which leads to fluid retention and an increase in the volume of circulating blood. And because of estrogen, literally all the mucous membranes, including the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity, become full-blooded, thicken. That is why breathing through the nose is difficult, since the edematous mucosa significantly narrows the nasal passages.

Rhinitis of pregnant women: symptoms

Rhinitis due to hormonal causes most often feels like severe nasal congestion. Also, the main symptom of "pregnant runny nose" is difficulty in nasal breathing and dryness in the nasal mucosa. In addition, there is a tendency to bleeding from the nose.

Rhinitis of pregnant women: treatment

First, you should, as best as possible, moisturize the room in which the expectant mother spends the most time. For this, both a special air humidifier and grandmother's remedy - a wet towel on the battery - can be suitable. It doesn’t matter which way the goal is achieved, the main thing is that humidified air in the room will certainly improve the overall well-being of the pregnant woman. In addition, you should remember about regular ventilation, because the dryness of the air directly depends on the temperature in the room. The room should be ventilated every hour, opening the window for about 10 minutes.

Washing the nasopharynx can relieve rhinitis of pregnant women. For this procedure, you can use ready-made solutions from a pharmacy with minerals; decoctions of herbs and ordinary sea salt are also perfect (2 teaspoons of salt for 1 glass of water).

Medications for rhinitis for pregnant women should be prescribed only by a doctor. Unfortunately, not all drugs for the common cold can be used "in position", especially considering the duration of the course of rhinitis. It is not recommended to use antihistamines, and neither in the form of physiotherapy, nor inside. With extreme caution, vasoconstrictor drugs are used, which, although they can give a tangible and quick effect, but at the same time pose a rather high risk. Most often, doctors recommend that pregnant women use hormonal drugs for rhinitis - in the form of aerosols, corticosteroids, their absorption is quite small, so these drugs do not carry any particular risk, both for the pregnant woman herself and for her fetus.

“Pregnant runny nose” is a uniquely temporary phenomenon, but it is in the interests of both the woman and the unborn baby to fight it.

Rhinitis of pregnant women is a common phenomenon that occurs due to the weakening of female immunity during this period. In most cases, the fairer sex, bearing babies, does not attach much importance to such a symptom. But a runny nose needs to be treated, especially during pregnancy, so that there are no complications that can threaten the health of the mother and the future of the baby.

Before you start treating rhinitis during pregnancy, you need to find out what provoked such a pathological condition in a woman. Runny nose in pregnant women can occur due to the following factors:

  1. Hormonal disbalance. For the female body during the period of bearing a baby, an increase in the synthesis of progesterone and estrogen is characteristic. This causes swelling of the mucous membranes and a decrease in their thickness.
  2. Decreased immunity. The fairer sex in an interesting position is more vulnerable to viruses and infections.
  3. Sinusitis, deviated nasal septum, enlarged adenoids. With such causes of rhinitis, you need to contact an otolaryngologist.
  4. Drying of the mucous membrane. Here, the provoking factor is allergies, the presence of dry air in the apartment, an increased volume of blood.

The use of birth control pills before conception, a predisposition to frequent colds, a poor ecological environment and the psychologically unstable state of a woman in position can cause a runny nose during pregnancy.

Symptoms of the disease

It is important to understand that for a future mother, free breathing is an important indicator. With nasal congestion, a woman begins to breathe through her mouth, the air is not cleared and an infection enters the body. This negatively affects the health of the fetus. After all, he receives oxygen from the mother's bloodstream.

With rhinitis in pregnant women, there are no symptoms of a cold. There is only characteristic copious discharge from the nose, congestion. If these symptoms appear and there is no treatment, complications may develop. Therefore, it is worth consulting with your doctor.

The main signs of a runny nose during the period of bearing crumbs include the following manifestations:

Swelling of the airways, aggravated by active movements, lying on your back;

Congestion causes a decrease in smell, appetite, disturbs sleep, which causes a bad mood in most cases;

With a deviated septum in the nose, congestion during pregnancy may be felt more strongly.

The clinical picture largely depends on the type of rhinitis. For example, with an allergic form of a pathological condition, the eyes turn red and watery, itchy in the nose. Coughing, sneezing and discharge from the nasal cavity speak of both viral and allergic rhinitis. Vasomotor rhinitis in pregnant women is characterized by nasal discharge of various consistency, burning and itching in the sinuses, and patients often complain of migraine, insomnia, and shortness of breath.

Diagnosis of the disease

How long does it take for rhinitis to develop? Pathology can form in any of the nine months. In most cases, a runny nose goes away after childbirth with time. If congestion continues for more than a week, you should consult a doctor. He figures out the following:

  • the factor that provoked the development of the disease (weather or housing conditions, other external factors);
  • the presence of other symptoms (redness and sore throat, fever, cough);
  • the nasal cavity is examined through the use of the rhinoscopy method;
  • if allergic rhinitis is suspected, a sample is taken for allergens.

Questionnaire for determining the type of rhinitis

If all of the above was not enough to accurately diagnose and understand the cause of changes in the mucosa, its condition, the doctor directs for the delivery of analyzes of biological fluids (blood, urine).

Hormonal rhinitis

During the period of bearing a child, a woman's body undergoes hormonal failure. Significantly increases the level of progesterone, which contributes to the normal bearing and development of the fetus. It, like estrogens, affects the vessels, mucous membranes, including the nasopharynx.

Hormonal rhinitis of pregnant women is formed in the second or third trimester. But there are times when congestion accompanies the entire time of waiting for the baby, from conception to the birth itself. This cannot but overshadow such a joyful period in a woman's life.

Hormonal runny nose during pregnancy is expressed by such signs:

  • clear liquid discharge;
  • sudden onset of shortness of breath, congestion;
  • nosebleeds;
  • the appearance of crusts on the mucosa with prolonged rhinitis.

The duration of the disease is individual. Some women suffer from a runny nose all 9 months, for others, a runny nose goes away after one to two weeks.

In order not to endanger the health of the expectant mother and baby, it is necessary to timely differentiate hormonal rhinitis from other infectious diseases.

Vasomotor rhinitis during pregnancy is provoked by an increase in the level of hormones in the body of a woman who is expecting a baby. The disease is formed for other reasons. This is the inhalation of a sharp aroma, dusty air in the room, the use of certain medications, as well as stress, nervous strain, alcohol abuse and smoking. This type of runny nose is rarely accompanied by allergies or infectious diseases.

The clinical picture is expressed by congestion, the release of a colorless liquid from the nose, snoring and shortness of breath at night, as well as sneezing, a slight cough and general malaise.

How to cure a runny nose during pregnancy? This should be discussed with a specialist. After all, many medicines are prohibited during the period of “bearing crumbs”, as they can harm the fetus.

allergic rhinitis

Hormonal changes in the body of a woman during the bearing of crumbs weaken the immune system. The body often begins to be hostile to certain substances: pollen, sweat, dust, wool, and some other fruits, food additives, household chemicals. Other factors can also become irritants.

Allergic rhinitis is manifested by an inflammatory process of the nasal mucosa, swelling, as well as redness and peeling of the skin, the appearance of a rash on it. Before treating a runny nose during pregnancy in the 1st trimester or at another time, it is necessary to find out the true cause. A similar diagnosis is carried out in a medical institution through a blood test.

If the representative of the weaker sex has a predisposition to allergic reactions, you should try to exclude all possible irritants while carrying the baby.

How to treat a runny nose during pregnancy?

How to get rid of a runny nose during pregnancy? Unfortunately, rhinitis during the period of bearing a child cannot be completely eliminated. It will continue until the body gets used to the changes in the hormonal background. Over time, congestion will go away on its own. But you can alleviate the condition through the use of various methods that can relieve the symptoms of the disease.

It is important to remember that a runny nose in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and throughout the rest of the childbearing period can be treated with a limited amount of medication.

After all, many medicines are prohibited, as they negatively affect the fetus. It is impossible to treat a runny nose in a pregnant woman and with the use of most vasoconstrictor sprays, drops.

In general, rhinitis therapy is carried out according to the following scheme:

  • Normalize the condition of the nasal mucosa. To do this, you need to rinse the cavity with saline, walk more, maintain room temperature in the region of 19-21 degrees, humidity - no more than 75%. Such conditions will make the nose breathe better even when sick, if the runny nose is not treated in the first trimester of pregnancy and in the following months.
  • To reduce swelling of the nose, you can raise the head of the bed by 15 degrees.
  • If breathing is completely impossible, apply drops to relieve swelling.

In general, the treatment of a runny nose during pregnancy aims to reduce the severity of symptoms with safe medications that are allowed when carrying a baby, or folk remedies, for the use of which it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Cold medicine during pregnancy

How can rhinitis be treated for a woman expecting a baby, only a specialist can say after an individual consultation. Basically, drops made on the basis of glucocorticoid steroids are prescribed. If you follow the dosage, then such remedies for the common cold during pregnancy are the safest, because they are not absorbed into the blood, do not affect the child.

Most often, doctors prescribe Nasonex, Fluticasone, Alcedin and Budoster. What can be done with nasal congestion while carrying a child? May appoint Tafen Nasal. Although in the instructions it is contraindicated for women in position, but being an analogue of Budoster, it is taken during gestation.

Tablets and other drugs are not allowed to be used for the common cold for pregnant women.

Massage

How to cure a runny nose during pregnancy through massage treatments? Therapy should be started at the first manifestations of rhinitis. Manipulation is performed by massage pressure of varying intensity on certain points. Procedures are carried out as often as possible. To enhance the effect, you can use the asterisk ointment.

Nasal lavage

It is advisable to treat a runny nose in the 1st trimester of pregnancy by washing. For the procedure, saline solutions are taken, which not only eliminate the pathogenic flora, but also allow you to breathe more freely. Such medicines for the common cold are prepared independently or purchased at a pharmacy.

With a purulent type of discharge, you can use a solution of Furacilin. For preparation, a tablet of the drug is dissolved in water. The tool actively fights microbes. Washing must be done at least 4 times in 24 hours.

Vasoconstrictor drops

This type of rhinitis medicine quickly relieves swelling, and after 15-20 minutes it becomes easy for a person to breathe. This happens under the action of the contained chemical elements in the drops, causing spasm of the vessels of the nasal cavity. But the components are able to be absorbed into the blood and harm the unborn baby, causing an increase in the tone of the uterus and excitation of the child, a spasm of the vessels of the heart muscle and brain. All this is very dangerous for the life of the crumbs. Therefore, it is strictly forbidden to treat a runny nose in a pregnant woman with vasoconstrictor drugs.

Inhalations

The use of inhalations is a safe method of eliminating the symptoms of rhinitis if a woman is expecting a baby. Here you can use both a nebulizer and just breathe over the steam. For inhalation with essential oils, you can use eucalyptus or fir liquid. Decoctions of chamomile, calendula and other medicinal herbs will be useful.

Inhalations act only on the affected respiratory tract, do not burden healthy organs in any way. Therefore, it is absolutely safe when carrying crumbs. The procedure takes 3-5 minutes on average. Up to 4 manipulations can be performed per day.

Saline solutions

Medicines made from saline solutions are safe and effective drugs for rhinitis. At the pharmacy, you can buy AquaLor, AquaMaris, Humer and others. But you can prepare the remedy yourself. For cooking, take a glass of boiled water, dilute half a small spoon of salt in it, you can use sea salt.

Treating a runny nose in the first trimester of pregnancy with saline is safe and effective. The tool not only eliminates puffiness, but also removes crusts, washes away dust, microbes.

Folk methods

Treatment of rhinitis during pregnancy with folk remedies includes the use of esters, decoctions and infusions for washing and instillation of the nose.

Hot drinks are an effective remedy for a cold. You can use infusions from coltsfoot, plantain, strawberries. The ingredients are poured with boiling water and left to brew for half an hour, after which they are ready to be taken.

Bulb juice is used in the form of a drop. But such a tool is used with great care so as not to burn the mucous membrane. Within a week, drip nose twice a day, two drops in each nostril. For allergic rhinitis, traditional medicine recommends soda-salt or just saline.

Folk remedies for the common cold during pregnancy are effective both in the later stages and in the early stages.

Possible complications and preventive measures

It is necessary to treat a runny nose in early pregnancy, as well as in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Otherwise, complications such as the development of laryngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, as well as poor oxygen supply to the fetus, infection with viruses and infections develop, which often leads to deplorable complications.

To avoid rhinitis in pregnant women in the 3rd trimester, or at any other time when carrying a baby, a number of the following conditions must be met:

  • exercise regularly;
  • drink vitamins;
  • avoid public places;
  • do not overcool;
  • maintain immunity;
  • at the first manifestations of the disease, go to the doctor for help.

A runny nose in a pregnant woman is a common occurrence, provoked by hormonal changes in the body. With timely diagnosis and appropriate medicine, rhinitis resolves quickly, without complications.

Rhinitis Nasal congestion is one of the most common diseases in the world. Rhinitis can be caused by infection, allergens, and a host of other causes.

Unfortunately, “an interesting situation” can also be attributed to “other reasons”. Almost half of pregnant women suffer from rhinitis, in medicine there is even a special term “rhinitis of pregnant women”.

Causes of rhinitis

Rhinitis in a pregnant woman can be caused by a variety of reasons, for example:

  • Respiratory tract infection - influenza, acute respiratory infections, SARS.
  • Exacerbation of chronic diseases such as sinusitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, etc.
  • Pathology of the nasal septum.
  • Neoplasms in the nasal cavity.
  • adenoids and polyps.
  • Hormonal changes in the body during childbearing.
  • Allergens.

In general, there are four main types of rhinitis in pregnant women:

  • spicy;
  • chronic;
  • allergic;
  • vasomotor rhinitis in pregnant women.

Perhaps each of them should be told in more detail.

Rhinitis and how to deal with it

The main symptom of any rhinitis is nasal congestion and difficulty breathing. If a woman breathes through her mouth, then the nasal cavity cannot perform its main function - to warm the air and protect the body from the penetration of microbes and viruses.
Therefore, it is necessary to treat rhinitis in pregnant women. It is only important to do it right. Different types of rhinitis are treated differently. And if so, then you should definitely consult a doctor to clarify the diagnosis and prescribe a safe treatment.

Vasomotor rhinitis during pregnancy

Vasomotor rhinitis is a condition of nasal congestion that is not caused by an infection or allergy. This form of rhinitis can come from strong odors, dust and smoke, alcohol, stress, certain medications, cold, spicy food, and finally pregnancy.
The cause of rhinitis during pregnancy is considered to be a significant increase in the woman's blood of estrogens produced by the placenta. Therefore, this type of runny nose is usually characteristic of the II and III trimesters. However, the disease can begin from the first days of pregnancy and continue until childbirth.
A high level of hormones causes swelling of the mucosa and nasal concha, increases the secretion of mucus.

Rhinitis of pregnancy - symptoms

  • nasal congestion, shortness of breath, aggravated by lying down and during physical exertion;
  • copious discharge of clear mucus from the nose (rhinorrhea);
  • coughing, sneezing;
  • itching in the nasal cavity;
  • headache.

Important! Rhinitis of pregnant women is never accompanied by fever, pain or sore throat. If you observe these symptoms, then most likely you have another disease and you need to urgently consult a doctor.

Rhinitis of pregnant women - treatment

Vasomotor rhinitis of pregnant women, strictly speaking, does not need treatment - as a rule, it goes away on its own in a couple of weeks after childbirth.
But its symptoms must be dealt with - after all, a runny nose complicates a woman's condition: it is difficult for her to breathe, she does not sleep well, loses her appetite, and gets tired quickly. In addition, the lack of oxygen causes fetal hypoxia - after all, his baby receives only from the mother's blood. In addition, mouth breathing opens the way to any infection. Therefore, the treatment of rhinitis of pregnancy is aimed at facilitating breathing.
To begin with, be sure to see a doctor - vasomotor rhinitis is very similar to allergic, but they are treated differently. The doctor must also rule out polyps, adenoids, or an infectious cause of the common cold.

What not to do

The first thing all doctors usually say is try not to use vasoconstrictor drops (Nafthyzin, Galazolin, Sanorin). They can only be used when there are no other methods left.

Vasoconstrictor drops increase pressure, narrow placental capillaries, reduce the flow of blood and oxygen to the fetus. The use of such drugs for more than 7-10 days can be addictive, and then, in order to start breathing freely, you will have to use them constantly, and in increasing dosages.

Prolonged use of vasoconstrictor drops dries up the mucous membrane and contributes to frequent nosebleeds.

What can be done

Try the easiest and safest ways. Humidify the air in the room, ventilate the room as often as possible. Drink enough fluids. Rinse the nasal mucosa with saline or various specialized products based on sea water. There are many such drugs in pharmacies and they are harmless. Salt solutions tone and moisturize the mucous membrane, promote the removal of mucus. Avoid areas with strong odors. Do self-massage of the nose, breathing exercises, special physical exercises. Sleep on a high pillow - this will reduce the swelling of the mucosa.

There are other, more effective, but also practically safe ways to make breathing easier. True, before using them, it is still better to consult a doctor. Inhalations with medicinal herbs (sage, calendula, chamomile), mineral water, soda solution. Steam should be inhaled through the nose, exhaled through the mouth. Ultrasonic cold vapor inhalers are better suited for these purposes. Drops with essential oils and menthol, such as Pinosol. Homeopathic remedies. For example, Euphorbium, Compositum, Delufen, etc. Nasal sprays based on local glucocorticosteroids (for example, Nasonex). Their active substance has a local effect and is practically not absorbed into the blood.

And only if no method has helped you, you can use vasoconstrictor drops. The safest are baby drops, but even they should be used as rarely as possible - if possible, just before bedtime.

And, of course, you can instill these drugs no more often than it is written in the instructions - there are drops that last 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours.

Acute rhinitis during pregnancy

Acute rhinitis is caused by a viral infection. It can be SARS, acute respiratory infections or influenza. The infection is transmitted through the air from an infected person, and the patient is contagious within a week from the onset of the disease. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, try not to contact such patients, and if you still have to, put on a mask, smear your nostrils with oxolin ointment, and rinse your nose more often.

It is necessary to treat a cold or flu, because the infection can spread further, causing a more serious illness, such as otitis media, pneumonia, sinusitis. And then you will have to take potent drugs that are potentially dangerous for the baby.

The symptoms of ARVI and flu are different, but, as a rule, both diseases are accompanied by fever, sore throat, feeling "broken" and headaches.

With the flu, the temperature usually rises sharply, but SARS and acute respiratory infections can be accompanied by a very slight increase in temperature, but a severe runny nose and sore throat.

Acute rhinitis - treatment

Treatment of acute rhinitis in pregnant women has its own specifics. A woman "in position" is contraindicated in the usual warming and physiotherapy procedures. You can not take a hot bath, soar your legs, put mustard plasters, do UHF, electrophoresis.

But on the other hand, you can warm up your hands, put on warm socks with dry mustard, wrap your throat with a scarf, “locally” warm your nose - for example, with a blue lamp, boiled eggs, bags of hot salt or sand.

Antibiotics are powerless against a viral infection, so it is useless to use them. And, by the way, very harmful! During pregnancy, you should also refrain from taking immunostimulants. For example, tinctures of echinacea, ginseng, licorice increase blood pressure and speed up the pulse not only in you, but also in the child. And in a baby, he already has about 200 beats per minute!

Honey and vitamins can be used only as directed by a doctor. They can be dangerous at certain stages of pregnancy.

For the treatment and relief of breathing, all the means listed above are suitable - washing with saline solutions, massage, homeopathic remedies, inhalations, a high pillow.

In the same way, with caution, you need to treat vasoconstrictor drops. You may need to use them during the acute period of the disease, but do not drip them for more than five to seven days. Specific drugs, their dosage and frequency of use should be prescribed by your doctor.

For the treatment of acute rhinitis, you can also use:

  • Drops from freshly squeezed juice of beets, carrots, apples, Kalanchoe. Juices can be mixed, instilled into each nasal passage about 6 drops 3 or 4 times a day.
  • Inhalations with onion and garlic brewed with boiling water.
  • Inhalations with oils (menthol, eucalyptus, etc.).
  • Balms like "Asterisk" - they can smear the bridge of the nose and the outer corners of the nostrils.
  • Vitaminized drink: rosehip infusions, tea with lemon, cranberry juice, currant compote etc.

Chronic rhinitis during pregnancy

The condition of constant nasal congestion during pregnancy can be caused by two types of diseases:

  • Chronic rhinitis that developed before pregnancy.
  • Rhinitis of pregnancy.

Frequent acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections and colds, untreated sinusitis and sinusitis can eventually become chronic - a mild but constant runny nose.

Chronic rhinitis is caused by certain drugs, such as the abuse of vasoconstrictor drugs. Adenoids, polyps, and deviated septum are also common causes of persistent runny nose. Chronic rhinitis can also occur under the influence of irritating factors such as tobacco smoke, dust, strong odors, etc.

Symptoms of chronic rhinitis:

  • constant nasal congestion, while laying one half of the nose, then the other;
  • persistent discharge from the nose (mucous or purulent-mucous);
  • breathing is more difficult when lying down, but as soon as you get up and start moving, it becomes easier to breathe.

Chronic rhinitis - treatment

First of all, the doctor tries to determine the cause of the disease and eliminate it. If the cause cannot be established, then treatment is available for pregnant women. Most often, it is aimed at facilitating breathing. But more serious procedures are transferred to the period after childbirth.

To eliminate nasal congestion, you can independently use the already described methods and means. Try not to use "chemistry" because most cold remedies cross the placental barrier.

Allergic rhinitis in pregnancy

Allergic rhinitis is caused by a reaction of the human immune system to exposure to allergens. The latter can be house dust, animal hair, pollen from various plants, some foods and chemicals. The diagnosis of "allergic rhinitis" is made only after a blood test.

It often happens that a woman first encounters allergic rhinitis during pregnancy, when her immune system is weakened.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis during pregnancy are slightly different from the classic symptoms of this disease: - seasonality, associated, for example, with the flowering of certain plants; - lacrimation; - itching of the skin of the face and nose; − sneezing; − rhinorrhea; - sometimes, dry cough.

Allergic rhinitis during pregnancy: treatment

Allergic rhinitis is very similar to chronic and vasomotor rhinitis, so you first need to clarify the diagnosis. Treatment should be prescribed only by a doctor.

The best treatment for allergies is to avoid contact with the allergen. If it is not detected, then the doctor will prescribe you antihistamines or other drugs and prescribe a safe dosage.

In some cases, to reduce the severity of allergic reactions, you can:

  • often wash your face with clean water, decoctions of herbs, water with emulsions such as Emolium;
  • instill albucid in the eyes;
  • eat fresh unripe green apples or raw sea buckthorn mashed with sugar;
  • take calcium supplements, such as calcium glycerophosphate.

In general, no matter how harmless a runny nose may seem to you, it is, of course, necessary to treat it. And it is best to do this under the supervision of a doctor and without the use of potent drugs. First, you should try all the safe means - because we are talking about the health of your child!
