The skin on the upper lip dries. What to do if lips dry in women

When dryness and cracks appear on the lips, many are in a hurry to immediately attribute everything to the scorching sun or, conversely, a terrible frost or strong wind.

And women at the same time prefer to hide the flaw that has arisen under lipstick, rather than solve the problem in the bud.

And yet, if you notice that your lips are dry, try to figure out the reasons for this phenomenon and begin to eliminate not the symptoms, but the problem as a whole.

And the Pantry of Beauty will help you understand this not a simple issue.

Dry lips, causes

Why does this problem occur? There are quite a few reasons:

1. Dehydration of the body. Due to the lack of fluid, your body stops nourishing the skin cells with water molecules, which leads to the drying of the upper layer of the epidermis. In this case, not only the lips can dry out, but also the skin of the face.

2. Deficiency of sweet in the body. Surprising as it may sound, however, people who severely restrict themselves in sweets may experience peeling and dry lips.

3. Lack of important vitamins and minerals. Poor nutrition, as well as a recent illness, often cause a deficiency of vitamins A, C, E and B. Each of these vitamins contains trace elements that are so necessary for the delicate skin of the lips. For example, vitamin C contains acetylsalicylic acid, vitamin E contains tocopherol, etc. They are responsible for the production of collagen, which gives your skin youth.

4. Weather conditions. Since the skin of the lips is very sensitive, the scorching sun, frost, dry air and penetrating air will definitely affect its condition.

5. Allergic reactions. As soon as you notice that your lips are drying, try to remember some details of the previous few days.

What lipstick did you use on your lips, what toothpaste did you use, what did you end up eating? Sometimes the answers to the questions asked allow you to avoid this problem in the future. The same category of reasons can include the use of certain drugs - for example, antidepressants.

If the listed medicines and things are not absolutely necessary, it is better to refuse them. Otherwise, the consequences will be much more serious.

6. Viruses and infections. There are a lot of diseases (fungus, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.) that can weaken your body, and in a weakened state, it becomes much more vulnerable, more susceptible to various infections on the mucous membranes.

7. The presence of bad habits. Constant licking and biting of the lips, smoking make the lips dry. If you like to lick your lips, being at the same time in the cold, then they will become dry.

8. Stress and hot food.

9. Pregnancy and early beriberi, toxicosis. Since this phenomenon is temporary, as soon as the body of a young mother returns to normal, the problem of dry lips will also disappear.

10. Sometimes color cosmetics contain dyes that affect the skin. However, instead of giving up lipstick, women, on the contrary, hide chapped lips, applying a harmful agent again and again, only aggravating the situation.

11. Sunscreens often contain an active ingredient called oxybenzone. Its excessive amount leads to dryness.

Dry lips, what to do?

It is advisable to deal with the problem at the earliest stages, and not bring the matter to the point of deep neglect.

Your body makes it easier by signaling in all sorts of ways that something is not right with it. So the symptoms of dry lips include: redness in the corners of the lips, white saliva and difficulty in swallowing. Noticing the listed symptoms, immediately take measures to treat the lips.

First you need to eliminate the very cause of dryness. Throw away your lipstick and change your toothpaste, and so that your lips do not lose moisture, use honey, cocoa butter or petroleum jelly.

Stop licking your lips, and even more so, don’t try to peel off the skin from them, because such actions will only complicate the situation: cracks, painful wounds will appear on the lips, in addition, this way you will infect the infection.

Get to grips with your nutrition. It should have a lot of greens, fresh vegetables and fruits. The use of harmful products must be limited in your diet. Proper and nutritious nutrition will have a beneficial effect not only on the skin of the lips, but also on the body as a whole. To get rid of itching, dryness and other unpleasant sensations on the skin will help various.

Dry lips cause many inconveniences: we do not enjoy eating, it hurts us to smile and kiss. This problem can occur at any time of the year, it appears in men, women, and children. Why does the skin on the lips dry, crack and peel off, what measures should be taken to eliminate this unpleasant symptom, how to avoid its appearance?

Why do lips dry

Dry skin of the lips is a reaction of the body to external influences or a symptom of some kind of illness in our body. The lack of moisture entering the body, first of all, manifests itself on the lips.

Photo 1: The lips are the first to react to changes in the external environment, this is due to the absence of sebaceous glands in them, which would regulate the condition of the thin skin on the lips. Source: flickr (Oleg Vashukov).

Cheilitis - inflammation of the stratum corneum of the skin and the border of the lips, manifests itself as a separate disease, but can also occur as a symptom of another disease.

And if it is possible to eliminate provoking factors and get rid of the problem in the first case, then in order to eliminate it, in the second case, you must first of all deal with the reasons that caused it.

External reasons:

  • meteorological reaction to cold, wind;
  • actinic reaction to ultraviolet, manifests itself more often in spring and summer;
  • poor oral hygiene, touching lips with dirty hands, using unclean towels;
  • insufficient amount of moisture.

Internal reasons:

  • hypovitaminosis, in which there is not enough vitamin B in the body (in particular B2, B6);
  • fungal infection caused by poor oral hygiene.
  • allergies caused by food, cosmetics, toothpaste, dentures
  • depression, vegetative neurosis, accompanied by biting, licking the lips;
  • low hemoglobin;
  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • reduced immunity;
  • fungal diseases.

Attention! Often the cause of peeling lips is also dehydration. Proper drinking regimen will help restore water balance and avoid many other problems and diseases.

Lips dry and flaky

The delicate skin on the lips, reacting to external or internal problems, if measures are not taken in time, begins to peel off. This is a common occurrence with her excessive dehydration.

Lacking moisture, thin skin begins to exfoliate, forming small scales. This causes discomfort and can lead to even more unpleasant consequences. Usually, in order to eliminate peeling, it is worth changing the diet, getting rid of bad habits, changing the influence of weather conditions, taking measures to protect the delicate skin of the lips with the help of cosmetics.

Peeling can be avoided if it is caused by external factors. It is more difficult if it is a symptom of another disease. Then it is not enough just to buy hygienic lipstick, drink more water and eat food rich in vitamins. It is required to consult a doctor who, after the diagnosis, will prescribe treatment.

Lips dry and cracked

When the peeling and dryness of the lips leads to the formation of cracks, the problem only gets worse: the lips begin to hurt, an infection can get into the cracks, which, possibly, will provoke the occurrence of other diseases.

Very often, such cracks appear in the corners of the lips. They are called zaeds. It is believed that the main sign of the appearance of seizures is a weakened immune system.

Seizures are also formed during a fungal infection, and as a result of past diseases that weaken the body's defenses. The reason for the appearance of seizures, in addition, can be:

  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • diabetes;
  • allergic reaction.

Why do lips peel off in women

Who is more prone to dry lips: men and women? It is hardly possible to answer this question unambiguously. With the similarity of the reaction of the body of women and men, the causes of dryness in representatives of different sexes may differ:

  • The most common cause of dry lips in women is improperly selected cosmetics: glosses, lipsticks, balms. Poor quality products provoke peeling and cracking.
  • Hormonal disruptions in the body cause a weakening of the immune system, and this is one of the main causes of dry lips in women.

Why dry lips in men

In men suffering from weather sensitivity, as well as working in the air, peeling of the lips is noted even more often than in women.

This, moreover, is aggravated by the fact that men still use lip cosmetics less than women.

Left without protection, under the influence of wind, rain and snow, men's lips often become dry.

What measures need to be taken

Treatment of cheilitis directly depends on the cause of its occurrence. When chapped lips are the result of a reaction to the weather, food, or improper makeup, the root cause needs to be addressed.

Moisturizing creams and masks help to make lips soft, use foods rich in vitamins A, E, C.

If peeling is a symptom of a disease, only a doctor can correctly diagnose, prescribe treatment.

homeopathic treatment

Reduced immunity will help restore homeopathy. You can take homeopathic remedies. Because homeopathy affects the entire body, improving its work and the interaction of all its systems.

Homeopathic remedies that help get rid of dry lips:

  • (Aconite)- prescribed for dehydration and dry skin, including on the lips.

Quite often, lips dry in women and men of different ages. Let's talk about the reasons for this phenomenon and what to do in each of the cases. Such a problem may arise due to temperature fluctuations or a malfunction of the internal organs. But dry lips should not be ignored, as this is a rather unpleasant sensation.

Not always a person will go to the doctor to get rid of such a syndrome. More often we resort to improvised cosmetics or folk recipes to moisturize delicate skin. But sometimes it is still worth paying more attention to the problem, especially if it is accompanied by a number of other symptoms.

Why dry lips in women?

Dermatologists have established such reasons why the fair sex is faced with a similar problem:

  1. weather conditions and temperature fluctuations. In winter, cold and wind are especially aggressive, which damage the delicate skin on the lips. It is peeling, covered with a crust, cracks. But even in summer the environment is not very favorable. At this time, the negative effects of sunlight and ultraviolet radiation on the skin increase, which leads to dehydration of surfaces and excessive dryness.
  2. Unbalanced diet, when vitamins are not enough. Particularly important for the condition of the skin and lips in the human diet are vitamins B2, A, D and E. When there is a deficiency of these microelements, the lips dry out strongly, and this is also accompanied by their redness, burning, small but painful cracks. After increasing the necessary vitamins in the diet, the condition gradually normalizes.
  3. A number of serious diseases of the internal organs. At the same time, not only dryness can appear on the lips, but also an inflammatory process, the so-called. This symptom is already a sign of diabetes mellitus, fungal infection, psoriasis, erythematosis, syphilis, tuberculosis, some neurological disorders, thyroid disorders, and dental problems. Also, chronic gastritis or gastroduodenitis can lead to excessive dryness. In this case, the condition is characterized by the appearance of an unpleasant odor, knits in the mouth, rashes form on the lower or upper lip.
  4. Not healthy lifestyle life, bad habits, lack of sleep, etc. Chronic stress, worries and anxieties can manifest themselves in the form of so-called psychosomatics. If addictions in the form of alcoholism, drug addiction, smoking are added to this, then the condition of the lips only worsens. Also on their appearance Other harmless habits also influence - biting, constant licking of a pencil or pen, etc.
  5. Occupational problems leading to long-term consequences for human health. This is especially true for musicians who play wind instruments. With constant contact with the mouthpieces and pipes, itching, burning, and other signs of an allergic reaction occur. Such contact dermatitis develops into a chronic problem and is manifested by dryness and flaking.
  6. As a result of the constant use of certain drugs. Usually such a side effect is indicated in the instructions for use. Among those that make the skin dry and sensitive, such products as Acnecutane, Roaccutane and Erase stand out.
  7. Allergic reaction to food or cosmetics. At the same time, other unpleasant and sometimes dangerous symptoms appear - itching, redness, burning of the mucosa, runny nose or tearing, swelling, etc. It is important to immediately drink an antihistamine, exclude exposure to the allergen and consult a doctor for help.
  8. Pregnancy - during the first trimester, a woman undergoes a strong restructuring of the whole organism. And the state of the hormonal background significantly affects the skin, mucous membranes, and general well-being. Most often, it is enough just to wait out this temporary factor and by the middle of pregnancy everything will be normal.
  9. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of dry skin, including lips. If a person does not consume enough clean liquid per day, then all organs begin to suffer. This also leads to increased air temperature in the room, low room humidity.

Dry lips in children and men - causes

Almost all of the above factors can affect people of different genders and ages. But there are problems that, for one reason or another, are more often faced by men. For example, if women use balms and hygienic lipsticks to protect themselves from wind, frost or ultraviolet radiation, then the representatives of the stronger sex practically do not resort to such means. From what their lips suffer much more.

Also, the factor that most often affects the male part of the population in this matter is smoking and other bad habits. This affects not only the skin and mucous membranes, but also all internal organs. Due to the constant exposure to aggressive substances, the immune system worsens and the person gets sick more often.

In children, the corners of the lips dry for the following reasons:

  • fungal lesions (candidiasis) with the concomitant appearance of a curdled plaque on the mucous membrane, more often occurs in infants;
  • dehydration of the body due to dry air in the room and high temperatures;
  • malnutrition, lack of vitamins and minerals;
  • problems with nasal breathing in respiratory diseases, then the child has to breathe through the mouth, which quickly dries up the mucous membrane.

What to do if lips dry?

If you are sure that the problem is temporary and is associated with some objective external causes, then it is enough to wait or just moisturize the surface of the lips. When all else fails and the skin condition worsens, you should consult a doctor for advice, undergo an examination and determine the underlying problem that caused dryness around the mouth.

Depending on the factors found, it is required to treat the underlying disease accordingly. In each of the cases, their own methods are selected:

  1. In case of serious internal pathologies, drug therapy is prescribed. These can be antifungal drugs, antibiotics, etc. In this case, even taking pills at home, you must strictly follow the instructions of doctors.
  2. With an allergic reaction, it is important to accurately identify the allergen and avoid it in the future. With intense symptoms, you can drink an antihistamine (Tavegil, Suprastin). If the condition is accompanied by itching and swelling of the mucosa, it is better to call an ambulance.
  3. When the cause of dry lips was a banal change in air temperature and adverse weather conditions, then it is enough to anoint them so that they do not dry out.
  4. Avitaminosis and lack of certain vitamins are eliminated much longer. And if you add healthy foods to your daily diet, then relief will come no earlier than in a week or two. For a faster improvement in the condition, you need to drink vitamin complexes sold in pharmacies without a prescription.
  5. Carry out diagnostics and sanitation of the oral cavity in time so that caries, gingivitis and other dental problems do not cause the infection to spread throughout the mucosa.
  6. To moisturize, nourish and soften the skin on the lips, you can lubricate them at night with vegetable oils, special ointments, and make masks from available products.
  7. When cracks appear, they can be healed with the help of medicinal plants, honey or the Aevit complex.
  8. Daily massage also works well on the lips. It should be done with a soft toothbrush.

  • Maintain optimal temperature and humidity in the room where you are most of the time.

Dry lips - common problem among many women. Moreover, dry skin of the lips can become not only in the cool months of the year. This article will help you understand what causes dry lips and how to deal with this nuisance.

Why do women dry and crack lips: reasons

Doctors and dermatologists list several common causes of dry lips:

  • temperature fluctuations;
  • lack of vitamins;
  • certain diseases;
  • Unhealthy Lifestyle;
  • professional problems;
  • reaction to drugs;
  • bad habits.

Sometimes dry lips are caused by two or even three reasons at once, which are not so easy to deal with. It is worth talking about each reason for the manifestation of this trouble separately.

temperature fluctuations

For many, discomfort on the lips appears precisely during the temperature difference, when delicate skin is exposed to polar temperatures. Especially often this happens in winter and autumn, when you need to go out of the house, where there are sub-zero temperatures and strong winds that dry your lips.

In the summer, you should also be on the alert - many already know how the insidious sun negatively affects the hair: it dries them, makes them more brittle and dull. Ultraviolet rays are not the best way to affect the skin. But, if the long-term effect of prolonged exposure to the sun manifests itself only years later (wrinkles, age spots), then the lips can dry out immediately.

Hypersensitivity to cold or solar radiation is more often diagnosed not in women, but in men 20-60 years old.

Vitamin deficiency

This is a big problem in the winter-spring period, when many people eat less varied than in summer. The main fighters for the beauty and smoothness of the skin of the lips are vitamins A, E, D and B (especially B2). Often, in addition to dryness of the lips, there is a burning sensation of the mucous membrane of the mouth and tongue, and on the reddish border of the lips, signs of finely scaly peeling and thin vertical cracks are noticeable. The lack of vitamins often proceeds painfully - fissures that tend to bleed and the tongue that grows in size are disturbing.

Diseases

The cause of dry and cracked lips can be any disease. One of the most common manifestations of serious health problems is cheilitis, an inflammatory process that affects the mucous membranes and skin of the lips.

Cheilitis can manifest itself in the form of swelling, redness, dryness and peeling of the lips, and sometimes bleeding sores, purulent crusts, burning and pain when opening the mouth and eating. Often the problem is recurrent.

Cheilitis can be associated with or caused by the following reasons:

  • Fungal infections, erythematosis, psoriasis, lichen planus, syphilis, tuberculosis and other skin diseases;
  • Allergic reactions. Often appear during contact with the components that make up lipsticks and some products. Those suffering from such troubles have clinical manifestations of dryness and peeling of the skin of the face;
  • neurological disorders. The so-called exfoliative cheilitis happens from strong excitement, depression, anxious feelings of a person. This type of cheilitis most often has a continuous sluggish course, with moments of remissions and exacerbations, and almost does not lend itself to self-healing;
  • Hyperthyroidism. Researchers have reason to believe that this problem also causes lips to dry out;
  • Chronic gastritis and gastroduodenitis. Up to a third of people with these diseases constantly experience bad breath, rashes on the lips and in the mouth: dryness and peeling of the lips are noted in most patients;
  • Anomalies of the minor salivary glands (congenital or acquired). At risk of getting glandular cheilitis are women with chronic periodontal disease, tartar and caries: these problems push to infection of the ducts of the salivary glands;
  • Neuritis of the facial nerve. There may be a hereditary predisposition. A sign of these diseases can be dry lips, itching, and sometimes swelling that flows to other parts of the face. The color of the lips and skin does not change, although in edematous places the skin becomes bluish-pink. Neuritis can manifest itself as a distortion of the face in a healthy direction, and the nasolabial fold is smoothed out.

professional problems

First of all, we are talking about musicians who play wind instruments. In response to a long stay of the mouthpieces in the mouth, there is severe itching, dryness, pain, burning, swelling and redness of the lips. In some cases, bubbles appear on the lips, after opening which cracks are exposed. This is another clinical manifestation of cheilitis - allergic contact. Most often, in musicians, such cheilitis passes into the chronic stage and manifests itself in the form of dryness, peeling and slight itching without a strong inflammatory reaction.

bad habits

Bad habits that can cause flaky and dry lips include:

  • constant biting of the lips;
  • the habit of holding foreign objects in the mouth: pencils, pens, etc.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

An unhealthy lifestyle can be understood, first of all, as malnutrition (consumption of a large amount of salty foods, coffee), drug addiction and alcohol consumption.

Medications

Some drugs can cause a number of side effects, which are mentioned in the instructions for use. These drugs include a powerful remedy for the treatment of skin diseases "Roaccutane": this drug makes the skin tender and hypersensitive - the lips crack and dry during the entire period of treatment. Some other drugs for the treatment of acne have the same effect - Aknekutan, Sotret, etc.

Dry lips treatment

Dry lips occur for certain reasons, the clarification and treatment of which is the main task of every beautiful lady or man. In parallel, it is necessary to cure and eliminate external defects at home.

Taking care of the beauty of the lips is an important daily ritual for every girl who wants to always look attractive to her man and everyone around her. Compliance with these simple rules will always allow you to smile widely and feel great!

Almost all people complain from time to time (if not to the doctor, then to each other) that their lips are dry. Women share with each other their methods of dealing with this scourge, and men steadfastly bite the crusts. However, before you start taking action (or decide to ignore the problem), you need to find out why your lips dry. From this will depend on the list of actions that need to be taken.

Relatively harmless causes of dry lips

It cannot be said that these factors are completely harmless, since they can lead to unpleasant, and even dangerous consequences. However, they are fairly easy to remove.

  1. Those who use hygienic lipstick every day have dry lips most often. The reason is that this product softens the natural protective thin layer on the lips.
  2. Dehydration. Maybe only in summer: in winter a person loses water not with sweat, but in the fight against cold, not noticing that his body lacks moisture.
  3. Fluoride toothpastes dry out and flake lips over time. These products create a kind of plaque that prevents moisture.
  4. Ladies often dry lips from low-quality cosmetics.
  5. Drying out often occurs due to the use of dishes with an abundance of spices.
  6. A common cause of this unpleasant phenomenon is beriberi. The particular condition of the lips indicates which vitamin is lacking in the suffering organism. For example, cracking of the corners of the mouth indicates a lack of vitamin B, and the surface of the lips - E.
  7. Smokers have dry lips all the time. The reason is obvious, but they are in no hurry to fight it.
  8. Lack of sugar in the body. We can say the most pleasant reason: there is a reason to treat yourself to a treat.
  9. Medications. Most often antidepressants.

As you can see, all these circumstances (except for a bad habit) are quite easily eliminated. Let's move on to more serious factors.

Frightening reasons

Some of them require the intervention of a medical specialist, and some require a revision of their life positions.

  1. The lips dry and peel off in a person experiencing severe and prolonged stress - he involuntarily licks and bites them all the time.
  2. Diseases of the intestines or stomach, primarily gastritis and dysbacteriosis.
  3. Allergy - most often to paste or lipstick, if the dryness of the lips is not seasonal, but arose during their change. But the problem can also arise due to allergies of a different origin.
  4. Diabetes. At the initial stage, when you do not yet suspect that you are sick with it, dry lips can be one of the first symptoms.
  5. If the lips dry and crack to the point of blood, and even with the release of pus, so that it hurts even to smile, it may be a fungus, staphylococcus, etc. Urgently see a doctor!

Of course, these causes are quite rare. Usually the discomfort is caused by something simpler. But if your lips dry regularly, it's better to play it safe.

Signs of upcoming problems

As a rule, drying does not occur instantly. It is preceded by certain symptoms. If you know them, you can prevent the onset of dryness. You should start taking action if you:

  • saliva became white and somewhat viscous;
  • swallowing is not painful, as with a sore throat, but rather difficult;
  • the corners of the lips turned red.

In order not to wait for the development of problems, we must begin to act.

We treat lips

First of all, observe the drinking regimen: the prescribed one and a half liters of water per day. Tea, coffee, juices and even more "pops" are not taken into account.

When planning to go somewhere, smear wet lips with a soft balm a third of an hour before going out. If your lips are already dry, replace lipsticks and balms with olive oil. It would be nice to drink it on a spoon in the morning, before meals and coffee.

Apply honey to your lips before going to bed. And until it is absorbed, do not eat or drink anything. And once a week, make a goose fat mask on them or, at worst, from a ready-made cream.

Take a course of complex vitamins. Which ones are better to choose, ask your therapist or dermatologist, he will assess the general condition and select what you need.

If the lips are chapped - juice and everything hot is drunk through a straw so as not to injure them even more. Fruits and juicy vegetables like tomatoes for the same purpose are best cut and placed in the mouth without touching the affected skin.

Prevent rather than cure

If your lips sometimes dry, take tests just in case, so as not to trigger possible more serious illnesses. In their absence, having eliminated the existing problems, take up prevention:

  1. Visit a dentist. Even if the teeth are intact, you need to remove the stone from them regularly.
  2. Put into practice regular massage: with a soft toothbrush dipped in vegetable oil (it is preferable to buy olive oil), gently rub your lips in different directions.
  3. Once every two weeks, make a mask of a teaspoon of medium-fat sour cream, the same volume of lemon juice and a few drops of vegetable oil. It is applied for twenty minutes, after which it is washed off with warm water.
  4. During the morning toilet, wipe with ice not only your face, but also your lips. If you make ice from decoctions of herbs or fruit juices, the procedure will become even more useful.

Children: increased vigilance

Particular care must be taken in relation to the baby. If you notice that your child's lips are dry, the first step should be a visit to the pediatrician and testing. To begin with, the doctor will determine whether drying is not a consequence of stomatitis or herpes - in children, this is often how they begin to manifest themselves. And the tests will rule out suspicions of the development of diabetes. It would also be useful to immediately establish whether the child is suffering from dysbacteriosis, and also ask the doctor what vitamins to “feed” the baby. The active growth of children and adolescents regularly leads to beriberi. If, however, the terrible diagnoses, fortunately, were not confirmed, you will have to patiently prevent the descendant from “peeling off” his lips and treating them in the same way as described above. It is worth using honey to soften it carefully, only being firmly confident in the absence of allergies. It is better to limit yourself to olive oil altogether.
