Prologue

Traveling in the United Arab Emirates is only a small part of a big trip. By this time, Olya and I had already visited, rode a scooter, and now we had to see a country in which a few decades ago there was practically nothing but sand, camel caravans and several small towns with low-rise buildings.

I must say right away that we prepared very carefully for the trip to Sri Lanka: we marked places in advance, calculated distances, found out approximate prices, etc., so there were no special “surprises” along the way, although there were corrections on the route. But the part of the trip, when we arrived in the United Arab Emirates, was treated extremely negligently. From everything done in advance, we put several points of interest to us on the map and bought tickets for the Burj Khalifa skyscraper on the Internet.

arrival

Our plane landed at Abu Dhabi International Airport. For some reason, it seemed to me that all the planes arrive in Dubai, as they told me that there is a metro directly from the airport to the city. Imagine my surprise when, to my question “Where is your entrance to the metro?” at the information desk, they answered me that there is no metro here, there are only buses ... We left the airport on the street and I turned on the navigator ... it turned out that Abu Dhabi airport is located 120 km from Dubai and 20 km from Abu Dhabi)))

There was a bus stop near the airport, and Olya and I went to look at the schedule and routes of local transport. As it turned out, buses do not go directly to Dubai from Abu Dhabi International Airport, and in order to get there, you must first arrive at the bus station in Abu Dhabi, and there already buy tickets for an intercity bus)) From here, the plan lined up by itself. First we have to go to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, and then get to Dubai, because. tickets for the Burj Khalifa had already been bought, the visiting time for our tickets was from 17:00 to 18:00. Due to local features of transport logistics, the entire route for the day was almost 400 km and looked like this:

After 10 minutes of waiting, the bus finally arrived. It looked like the most typical LIAZ bus, hundreds of which ride around St. Petersburg.

As we drove to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, there was endless construction around in the rocky desert. The roads have already been put into operation, smooth, straight, designed for a large number of vehicles, but so far almost empty. Everywhere there were low-rise mansions behind large fences, but it all looked lifeless, because there was practically no greenery. All sidewalks are gouged, and mountains of construction waste, as it were, hint that construction in these areas has not yet been completed.

When our bus climbed to the next junction of the local autobahn, Olya and I saw the giant domes of a huge white mosque. Against the background of everything that surrounded her, she looked as massive as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. We got off at the bus stop right in front of the front entrance to the mosque, which looks to the east, but as it turned out, the current entrance to it is located on the north side and to get there, you need to walk from the bus stop for about a kilometer.

This is what the eastern entrance looks like through which you cannot enter:

And here is a view of the north entrance:

Entrance to the mosque is absolutely free, but before you get there you need to go through a security check. Females are given free special oriental robes with a hood, without which entry into the territory is prohibited.

We arrived at the mosque at about 10 am. There were already a lot of tourists at that time, but since the internal spaces are very large, the people evenly dissolved in them and sometimes, after waiting a bit, it was possible to take photographs with almost no people in the frame)

The mosque itself is made of white stone, but since the white color easily takes on other shades, during our visit the mosque looked golden due to the sun, which shone at a rather sharp angle.

The exit to the central courtyard of the mosque is blocked, the route for tourists passes along the corridor with columns along the contour of the courtyard. Then we got to the main building on the territory of the complex.

Inside the mosque is also very spacious. There are many small details everywhere, rich carpets are laid on the floor, and giant chandeliers are suspended from the ceiling.

The glory of this mosque runs far ahead of it and I am ready to confirm that it is not nearly as bad as it is described. The Sheikh Zayed Mosque absolutely needs to be placed at the top of the list of those places that are worth visiting first of all upon arrival in the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai

After visiting the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, we had to move to Dubai. In order to make this maneuver, we first had to return to the same bus stop where we got off and drive from there to Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi, road near the bus station

The bus arrives at the bus station in Abu Dhabi, from where both local buses and intercity buses start. Buses go to Dubai with a higher class than the LIAZ on which we traveled from the airport to the mosque and from the mosque to Abu Dhabi. The journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai takes somewhere around two to two and a half hours, depending on traffic.

Most of the way, we watched boring things from the window: a rocky desert, periodically appearing low houses, something under construction or no longer under construction ... But as soon as we drove directly to Dubai, skyscrapers of all colors, sizes and configurations suddenly grew out of nowhere in the middle of the desert.

Skyscrapers of Dubai, photo from the bus

We got off the bus a little before the final stop to cut down on the number of metro stations we had to pass to get to the Burj Khalifa.

Opposite the metro, they built some kind of hefty U-shaped elda, however, as we will see later, there are a lot of bizarre buildings in Dubai))

As soon as we got into the subway car, it was as if we were teleported into the future, it can take a long time to describe in words, but it’s much clearer to look at the photos, as they say “no comment” ...

To get to the Burj Khalifa, you need to get to the station of the same name, which also has a second name - "Dubai Mall", and then go long and dreary along the corridors, reminiscent of the transitions between the terminals of a large airport. In the end, these corridors lead to a shopping and entertainment complex, from where, if you are not lost yet, you can get to the ticket gate.

Since we still had about an hour before the visit time, we left the shopping and entertainment complex on the street to look at the most famous skyscraper in the world from the outside. The Burj Khalifa skyscraper turned out to be so huge that in order to photograph it, I had to make a panorama of more than 15 shots. Due to the fact that my shooting point was on the same plane as the first floors of the Burj Khalifa - in the photo the top of the skyscraper turned out to be somewhat flattened, in reality the building looks like a sharp and elongated rocket.

There are also many interesting things inside the mall, for example, a huge aquarium where sharks, stingrays and other healthy fish and not only fish swim ...))

And in the same mall there is the famous artificial waterfall "Pearl Divers".

Artificial waterfall "Pearl Divers". Artificial waterfall "Pearl Divers".

Closer to 17:00, Olya and I went to the ticket office, from where we were taken to the 124th floor of the skyscraper by means of an elevator. If in Kratz, the skyscraper has not yet been fully completed (inside), and the height of the observation deck is about 450 meters (half the height of the building). Nevertheless, the views from there are very beautiful, but there are some drawbacks.

The first drawback is the number of people… Despite the fact that tickets are sold by the hour and, for example, sunset tickets are much more expensive than tickets during the daytime, you can still get old until you get to the window with the view you are interested in..

The second drawback for me was that the windows with "slots" for the camera are located only on one side of the building and these slots are too narrow. For example, on the same Montparnasse in Paris, the slots are an order of magnitude wider and the camera lens can be inserted beyond the border of the protective glass, right there my lens (Tamron 28-75 f2.8) did not fit into the “slot”.

The third drawback for me was that from the side where there are no slots in the windows (view towards Abu Dhabi), all the windows are completely stained and terribly glare. As a result, I did not get a single photo with a view in that direction ...

In general, the impressions from visiting the skyscraper were positive, although this pleasure turned out to be a little expensive.

When we went down and went to the square in front of the Burj Khalifa, it was already getting dark. We walked for about half an hour and started moving towards the bus station. Let me remind you that in order to get to Abu Dhabi Airport, you must first arrive in the city of Abu Dhabi, then take a local bus similar to our LIAZ and go to the airport on it.

We got to the station at 19:30 local time, and our flight from the UAE was at 2:00 am. It would seem that there is more than enough time, but when we arrived at the bus station, the first thing that opened our eyes was a queue of people about 150 meters long. they were all waiting for the bus in Abu Dhabi. At the box office we were reassured that the buses run every 15 minutes. We bought tickets and started to wait. First, 15 minutes passed, but the bus did not arrive, then another 15, but the bus did not come. I went to the ticket office to find out what the problem was and they answered me that there were big traffic jams at the entrance and the bus would be coming soon. Considering that we had about four hours left before the start of registration, we began to get nervous, because even if we got on the bus right now, it would take about 2-2.5 hours to get to Abu Dhabi, plus traffic jams for entry, and therefore most likely for exit from Dubai, after which we still need to get from Abu Dhabi to the airport, it's still time ... and most importantly - 150 meters of a human queue and no buses))) After another 10 minutes of waiting, the first bus finally appeared and the queue was slightly reduced ace. I calculated that about 40 people get on the bus, which means we can only leave through three more of these buses ... The situation escalated, it was 20:15 or 3 hours and 45 minutes before the start of registration, and we were still in Dubai, 145 km from Abu Dhabi and another 30 km from Abu Dhabi to the airport)) Another 10 minutes passed, another bus arrived, the queue was reduced, but much easier we didn't get away with it. Then another bus arrived, but it followed a different route ... After 5 minutes, another bus arrived in Abu Dhabi, it was already 20:30, or 3 hours and 30 minutes before the start of registration, nerves were giving out ... after 2 minutes another bus arrived, but as it turned out - it climbed out of line and the bus, which is late, must first load in front of it ... such a bureaucracy ... At the bus station, the queue is in order, both among passengers and buses, a special man-controller in Arafat is watching, it was he who sent off the bus driver, who got in out of turn, but before that they cursed loudly for 5 minutes, the whole station heard)) I deftly drove him into the sump, waiting in line)))) I have never seen anything like this))) Five minutes later, a late bus arrived, and after another three minutes we finally got into the bus that was driven into the sump. We left Abu Dhabi at about 20:45. We didn’t drive even a kilometer from the bus station, when we immediately got stuck in a dead traffic jam on a huge highway in the middle of Dubai, which had at least four lanes for traffic in each direction. I already thought that it was “that’s it, we’ve arrived”, but our driver turned out to be extremely savvy and somehow the bus leaked into the inner streets of the city, along which it could barely squeeze through, because this is a large intercity bus designed for 40+ people with luggage.

After 15 minutes, we were already racing at full speed, passing the traffic jam. Then I calmed down a little and I was knocked out to sleep ... I woke up at the entrance to Abu Dhabi. It was about 11:00 pm or an hour before check-in started. Arriving at the bus station, we ran to the ticket office, where we were told that the bus to the airport would be in a couple of minutes. We ran to the boarding area, but there was no bus. The locals suggested that we were not late and the bus was about to arrive))) Well, then, without any adventures, we got to the airport right at the start of registration, passed all possible controls and flew out of the country) Ahead of us was a long flight to Amsterdam, and about five hours to walk around this beautiful and unusual city, I will talk about this in the next post =)

Being busy with business does not exempt you from Friday prayers. Verse 62:9 of the Quran says: “O believer! If you hear the call to prayer on Friday, then remember Allah, leave your affairs.”

The Friday prayer is long, with a sermon added to it. As a result, Muslims spend more than an hour in the mosque.

In ancient times, Friday was especially important for the Arabs, because almost all people did not live in cities, as they do now, but in rural areas, fishing villages. It was a time of gathering people in regional centers and at the same time a market day.

The ban on work and business activity applies only to the time of Friday prayers. Other hours are not allowed to work.

In addition to prayer, other charitable deeds are recommended to faithful Muslims on Friday. On this day, it is recommended to wash, wear clean clothes, praise Allah and the Prophet Mohammed, read the Koran, especially chapter 18 “The Cave”.

Friday for tourists

Since Friday is the main day off, state institutions do not work at all. Banks are closed, with rare exceptions, however, exchange offices operate according to the usual schedule, which you can read about in our review “”. That is, it is not necessary to change the currency in advance.

Shopping malls usually work the same as on the rest of the week. Only some shopping centers and malls are closed for 1-2 hours at lunchtime for a Friday prayer break. For example, in the emirate.

Recently, the Arabs have successfully adopted the experience of the American Black Friday phenomenon. On the Islamic day off superimposed very well. As a result, sales are constantly held in the UAE with the names not only “Black Friday”, but also “White”, “Red” and others. Soon the colors of the rainbow will run out, you'll have to somehow get out. Shopping centers can be crowded as in the photo below, click on the photo to enlarge.

Entertainment facilities - water parks or attractions work according to the usual schedule. Sometimes something shifts in the schedule, for example, on Friday they do not show the first show at 13-00, instead the show is held at 13-30.

Shops, cafes and restaurants are different - some are closed at all, some work with a long break for prayer, some open only after lunch. Friday is least noticeable in the most modern emirate.

Religious institutions for tourists are closed or their opening hours are limited. In and out at all. available for tourists only from 16-30.

Attractions do not have any generally accepted schedule rules on Friday. Everything is individual! Read our articles about the sights of the UAE, we accurately indicate the schedule in each article.

Consider an important point! Friday is a day off, when locals and expats try to get to rides, water parks and malls. All entertainment facilities are crowded with people. In the park at the attraction, you can stand in line all day.

The United Arab Emirates surprisingly combines the features of Islamic and modern European cultures, and that is why the holidays are mixed here and never cease to amaze tourists with their diversity. Most of the Muslim holidays celebrated by the residents of the Emirates depend on the lunar calendar and do not have a fixed date, unlike the most important winter celebrations - the UAE National Day, the Gregorian New Year and the famous trade fair.

On New Year's Eve, the UAE and especially Dubai turn into a real celebration of colors and light. Thousands of tourists from different countries come to see the most grandiose fireworks in the world, which in 2009 was even included in the Guinness Book of Records. Fireworks explode from 25 sites along the embankment, soaring into the evening sky in fiery colors of various shapes and sizes. New Year's events are held both on the streets and in closed complexes and parks, restaurants and hotels offer their visitors unforgettable programs with songs and dances, bright fire and laser shows, as well as a special New Year's menu and even small memorable gifts. The cost of a New Year's gala dinner in UAE restaurants starts from 60-70 euros per person and almost indefinitely.

However, the spirit of the holiday covers the whole country much earlier than New Year's Eve. Winter festivities begin as early as early December and mark the most beloved public holiday - National Day of the UAE.

December 2 - UAE National Day

Not only citizens take part in the celebration, but also all visitors who cannot help but succumb to the general wave of jubilation, and literally dive into the stream of festive carnivals, contests and concerts. All the most important and most magnificent ceremonies are held in Abu Dhabi, but in other cities and emirates you can feel the flavor of this holiday.

National Day of State Formation is traditionally celebrated for several days - mainly from December 1st to December 4th. These days, state institutions are decorated with huge flags, and everyone can also place a huge flag with national colors on their house or hang it from the balcony of the apartment. Black on the flag of the UAE means the past, white - the future, red - the blood shed for freedom, and green means the triumph of life. Everything around and even the faces of the Emiratis are painted in these colors. Preparations for the celebration begin a few days before it. For example, in car repair shops, which usually deal with window tinting and other usual car services, the most frequent orders are the installation of decorations on cars, the sticker of a film with the coat of arms, images of Emirati leaders, and the decoration of cars with sequins and ribbons. All this happens not only out of deep respect for their homeland, but also because every year in the Emirates there is a competition for the most decorated car. The winner receives a prize equivalent to 20,000 euros, second place is awarded 10,000 euros.

Traditional parades are broadcast on all local television channels. Tens of thousands of local residents and tourists gather for boat races, air shows, exhibitions of the best manufacturing enterprises and a host of other cultural events dedicated to the holiday. All parks hold interesting contests and attractions with prizes, and in shopping centers you can join carnivals - processions of huge dolls in national costumes. Concerts of creative groups from all over the world are also held here, gathering crowds of onlookers - performances by Bavarian dancers, Arab musicians playing drums and bagpipes, circus performers juggling fireballs ... All visitors receive flags, scarves and balloons with national colors as a gift. By tradition, in some places, so-called "Heritage villages" are created - small islands of Arab culture, where men sit on carpets and pillows and weave nets, or women in national clothes paint the hands of everyone with henna for free and distribute coffee, water and national sweets. Free treats are also offered at most malls, Dubai International Airport and other crowded places. Even in restaurants and cafes, dishes are decorated with small flags with the coat of arms and / or the flag of the UAE. Most restaurants offer a special menu with 20-40% discounts on the days of the celebration. The culmination of the National Day of the UAE is a colorful laser show and fireworks, unique in scope and beauty.

Dubai Shopping Festival

The famous Dubai Shopping Festival, which takes place in January-February, has become so popular and large-scale that it can be equated with the national holidays of the UAE. This festival was recognized as the largest in the world and many tourists come to the United Arab Emirates for the New Year, including for the sake of visiting this unforgettable event and, of course, getting huge discounts on goods, reaching 50-80%.

The first festival took place in 1996 and immediately gained popularity among the "buy hunters". Then Dubai in one month received about one and a half million tourists who left about half a billion dollars in local stores. Now these numbers are many times higher. The organizers of the Shopping Festival offer not only the best shopping, but also a lot of entertainment for adults and children of all ages, as well as a variety of lotteries and competitions with valuable prizes. You can win Nissan, Lexus cars, as well as tens of kilograms of gold. In 2012, there was even a helicopter draw!

The beginning of the festival is marked by large-scale fireworks, setting the festive tone and creating high spirits. These days, thousands of people are constantly on the streets of Dubai, and fair rides do not stop working even at night. The holiday of discounts meets tourists already at the airport in Duty Free shops, and in the city the doors of 3,000 shops and 40 shopping and entertainment centers are open to visitors - Deira City Center, Bar Juman, Al Gureir City, etc. All of them give customers a lot of surprises and entertainment.

An interesting attraction in Dubai that is worth visiting these days is Emirates Towers Boulevard in one of the most prestigious areas. Two skyscrapers with a magnificent hotel inside, dozens of boutiques, jewelry stores and restaurants become a place of pilgrimage for thousands of tourists. On holidays, even in the elite district of the city, you can dine for only 70-100 euros for two, which is really inexpensive for these places.

The holiday also includes national oriental bazaars, which work even at night. For example, at Sikkat Souk al Khali, you can buy the best high quality gold items for only 7-8 euros per gram. Carpet Oasis offers shoppers thousands of miles of exquisite carpets, with prices ranging from €150 to infinity. There is also an exhibition of antique carpets, the price of which can reach several tens of thousands of euros.

You can satisfy your appetite in open-air restaurants and cafes or in special fair buffets organized in parks. In such food outlets, both main dishes and snacks (15-40 euros) and sweets (3-10 euros) and drinks (coffee 1.5 euros) are offered. If you're lucky, you can get to a free tasting of national dishes, which are held by some restaurants. Culinary competitions among chefs are also arranged here. Real works of art are presented to the public.

Within the framework of the Festival, sports events are also held - horse races, tennis tournaments, camel races, beloved by Arabs. You can go diving, windsurfing or even skiing - the Mall of the Emirates has a 24-hour ski resort these days (80 euros per night for adults and 45 euros for children). Theater lovers will enjoy numerous performances by street performers and international theaters, as well as film festivals and fashion shows by leading designers. These events are traditionally hosted by world pop stars, who also perform at open-air venues.

Global Village

Before the Trade Festival, at the end of October - November, the Global Village fair starts in the UAE and continues to work until the end of February.

This fair is, firstly, a huge oriental bazaar with an appropriate atmosphere and a lot of exotic goods. Those who come here for the first time are at first lost in a huge range of goods and entertainment, as well as between the pavilions of different countries, in most of which, among other things, you can try national dishes and drinks.

African pavilions selling exotic souvenirs, paintings, carpets and panels deserve special attention. Here you can buy masks, figurines and ebony sculptures, some of which reach two meters in height. Small figurines will cost 7-10 euros, and huge figures will cost no less than 1000 euros. It sells wallets, shoes and bags made of python and crocodile skin. In this pavilion, for 1 euro, you can take a picture with dark-skinned Africans in war paint, dressed in animal skins. For lovers of exquisite gizmos, there is a pavilion representing the Czech Republic. It sells glass and crystal souvenirs, tea sets and vases. You can even buy housing at the Global Village - an entire shopping street is given over to representatives of real estate agencies.

You can take a break from the abundance of goods and services in the pavilion of Thailand, offering a traditional Thai relaxing massage (7 euros per hour). Children will surely enjoy the Park Leisure playground (8 euros per hour) with soft houses, slides and inflatable structures, as well as the Little Big Club, where children can take pictures with their favorite fairy-tale characters. The fair also hosts the Aqua Fantasia water show, which is a smaller copy of Dubai fountains. However, one feature distinguishes it - a kind of screen is arranged from the small splashes of the fountain, on which music videos are shown.

By the way, it will be most profitable to visit the fair closer to its closing, i.е. in February, because it is in the last days that the already available prices become even lower. This is due to the fact that sellers are interested in selling the maximum amount of goods so as not to carry it back. The World Village is open daily from 16-00 to 00-00, and on Thursday and Friday until 01-00. The cost of visiting is 5 euros.
