Is hair tinting a way to gently refresh your look or radically change it? Hair tinting: types and methods

The trend of recent decades strongly recommends that you treat yourself and your body with extreme caution, carefully monitoring the composition of the products that a person consumes daily. She did not bypass the beauty institute, especially hairdressing, where hair toning is extremely common.

Dying your hair in extreme colors is, according to stylists, an example of bad taste, of course, if we are not talking about specific cultures. Natural shades have been in trend for the last decades, which makes the toning procedure extremely popular. But what is she?

At its core, hair tinting is hair coloring with special gentle dyes that change the shade of the natural color by a maximum of three tones, while not affecting the deeper layers of the hair.

Today, the tinting procedure is not only and so much exclusively the process of changing hair color, but also a way to determine the most suitable shade for the fair sex. Such a widespread use of the procedure is explained by the fact that special substances are included in the composition of hair tinting paints.

In fact, they act as follows: the agent covers only the upper surface of the scales, directing them along the growth of the hair, thereby ensuring the integrity of the internal component and keratin. However, this method of dyeing has its drawbacks - the product is easily washed out of the hair. Therefore, to maintain the effect, you need to use special shampoos for tinted or dyed hair.

It is thanks to such a variety of goals that the toning procedure can be carried out with varying degrees of intensity: light, gentle and intense.

So, light toning is a way to determine the appropriate shade for both other types of toning, and when deciding on hair coloring. It is carried out with the help of special shampoos, sprays or foams and disappears immediately after the first shampooing.

Gentle toning- has a longer duration of action, as a rule, this is a period of two to four weeks. It is intended to be always in the trend of hairdressing fashion, but at the same time take care of your own hair.

Intensive toning- more like a coloring procedure by the time of maintaining the resulting shade of hair. Here only paints are used only those that do not contain either ammonia or hydrogen. It can be used both to give the hair a bright color, and in order to hide the growing roots of the hair in the process of returning the natural shade.

But it is worth remembering that successful toning, regardless of its type, will succeed only if it is carried out correctly.

Rules of procedure

Each type of toning requires the lady to follow a certain procedure. So, for example, with light toning, it is enough to apply the product to damp hair along the entire length, starting from the roots. Then just dry and evaluate the effect.

With gentle toning, the procedure is somewhat more complicated. First you need to give your hair a clean look. Depending on the manufacturer's requirements, the tinting agent can be applied to wet or dry hair. At the same time, depending on what result the beautiful lady expects, the paint is applied along the entire length, on the roots, on the tips or on individual strands and left for the time specified by the manufacturer. Then the hair is washed and dried.

Intensive toning according to the one-on-one execution procedure is like dyeing, only the paint should remain on the hair for no more than 20 minutes.

Own rules for each color

There are certain rules for tinting dark hair

Stylists recommend not using light shades, because. they will just be invisible. But darker or giving a spark of gold tones will come in handy. Only a few months before toning should you stop dyeing your hair with natural dyes such as, for example, henna.

Toning of blond hair will look much more advantageous

In fact, it can be used to set a wide variety of shades - from noble steel to delicate honey. In addition, with its help, blondes and brunettes can easily evaluate how darker hair color suits them and, in case of failure, return to a natural tone.

Hair toning is a great way to redefine your look without damaging your favorite hair.

Toning is the superficial fixation of artificial pigment on the hair.

ESSENCE OF HAIR TONING PROCESS:

The toning procedure is erroneously called staining. Hair coloring is a deep penetration of a pigment molecule of a persistent (permanent) dye into the depths of the hair structure, that is, pigmentation.
Coloring with a permanent dye is a chemical process when the pigment of a permanent dye interacts at the molecular level with the natural pigment of the hair.
The essence of toning with an unstable dye (tinting or, the second name, tinting) is a physical process. The pigment molecule does not penetrate the depth of the hair, it remains on the surface of the hair. That is why the pigment molecule of the tinting paint is quickly washed out.

Tinting paint, unlike resistant, does not contain ammonia, which opens the scales and provides a chemical reaction inside the hair. In addition, tinting paint works on a small percentage of an oxidizing agent.
Another difference between a tinting dye and a persistent dye is the different principle of action of the oxidizing agents that are used to prepare the composition.
The principle of action of the tinting dye pigment is direct. This means that the oxidizing agent is only needed to help the pigment molecule attach to the hair. The principle of operation of a permanent dye is indirect. The oxidizing agent tears off the scales of the surface layer of hair cells, allowing the pigment to penetrate deep into the hair and begin to interact with the natural pigment.

It is important to know
There are also semi-permanent dyes. They contain molecules of both direct and indirect action. It is a combination of chemical and physical processes. Semi-permanent dyes contain less ammonia than permanent dyes.
Tinting, surface dye is not able to illuminate. Perhaps toning in a natural shade - "tone on tone" - or raising one tone.
Some manufacturers indicate in the product instructions that this tinting dye is able to raise the color by one tone, but this is only possible if the original base is light. With an increase in the exposure time on the hair, the tinting paint is really able to neutralize its own pigment.

Purpose of toning: giving depth, saturation to color - "nuance".
Masters advise toning hair. The tinting dye will make the hair elastic, pliable, prepare it for cutting and styling. Toning is not only aesthetics, it is also care. Modern tinting dyes on the market contain a variety of moisturizing and nourishing ingredients, innovative formulas and compositions that heal hair.

The tinting dye has a very mild effect on the hair structure, but it is impossible to say that it does not violate the structure at all. As well as believing that the tinting dye will be washed off and the hair color will remain natural. The dye will indeed be washed out gently and gradually, the border of the regrown roots will be almost invisible, but since the dye contains hydrogen peroxide, the natural color will not be completely restored.
Toning dye is the best solution if the client is experimenting with hair color for the first time, when the hair is porous, there is no need to lighten the hair and there is no gray hair.

Important
A tinting dye, as a rule, has a more modest gamut compared to a persistent dye.
Tinting paint lasts, as a rule, up to 24 hair washes.

HAIR TONE TECHNOLOGY

The prepared composition (dye + appropriate oxidizing agent in the proportion recommended by the manufacturer) is applied to clean, damp hair. There are also dyes ready for application that do not require mixing with an oxidizing agent.
Molecules of tinting dye are instantly fixed on the hair. Those areas that will be treated with the composition first will be darker as a result. Water deprives the hair of the ability to instantly accept the pigment of the paint, and toning occurs evenly.
Do not apply tinting dye to damaged areas of hair- areas with open scales. The hair should first be treated with a nourishing and regenerating balm or mask, which will fill the voids of the hair with keratin, prevent the dye pigments from penetrating into the hair structure and hold it on the surface.
You should start applying the tinting composition to cold zones.
The composition is washed off with warm water.
Neutralization - since the process is non-chemical - is not required.
The use of products for the care of colored hair is recommended.

Toning after lightening as the second stage of hair blonding.

After bleaching, the hair structure is "empty" - without pigment. And since after bleaching the hair scales are very open, even a large molecule of tinting paint goes deep into the hair structure and replenishes the neutralized pigment, filling the voids, and gives a shade.
After clarification, a persistent dye is not used, the choice is made in favor of a shaded one (so the hair has undergone serious processing), an aggressive effect is undesirable. The action of the tinting dye is softer and it copes with the task of filling the hair with pigment.

Question "ZM": How do you feel about toning young healthy hair with a good own pigment with a beautiful distinct color?
Responsible Gorbuleva Tatiana, Senior Lecturer at Key-Ukraine School:
As a rule, in our region, light brown hair color prevails. Even if the hair is healthy, natural light brown is usually a "gray", inexpressive color. Remaining a gray mouse is not a good choice. Tone-on-tone tinting will add depth and shine to the color. With the exception of natural deep brown hair, I advise everyone to tint their hair.

Client question: What would you advise me if my gray hair starts to appear, but I would not want to paint?
Answer: Ideal option - tint dyes! In some cases, even with the amount of gray hair up to 50%, a tint dye is used. And due to gray hair, the color is not uniform, as if imitating “highlighting”, often having a positive effect.

Magazine "Mirror of fashion"

After bleaching, the hair becomes brittle and brittle, and it also happens that the color resulting from the procedure does not quite meet the desired. To take care of curls, hair tinting will help to correct the final shade easily and without harm to the hair. This article explains how to properly perform such toning.

In the process of bleaching, the natural pigment of the hair is destroyed, because it is he who gives them color. Also, as the bleaching composition acts, the lipid layer (fat layer), which is responsible for the elasticity of the hair, is destroyed. Therefore, they become dry and brittle.

The situation helps to correct the tinting of curls with a permanent dye containing keratin, which evens out the structure of the hair, restoring voids in it after the destruction of the pigment. Also, permanent dyes contain wax, which gives softness and shine to the hair.

So toning can also be a passive care for clarified curls.

After lightening, instead of a persistent dye with its aggressive effect on the hair structure, a tinting dye with its mild effect is the best option, because. it copes with the task of staining as correctly as chemical "long-term" compounds, while not harming the curls.

What is the difference between toning and staining

Toning is a physical, rather than chemical, effect of paint, when an artificial pigment, as it were, falls on the hair from the outside, giving color. Therefore, unlike the “real” color, the tinting mixture is not so durable, because it only lies on the curls with the “top” color layer.

Also, the composition of the tint mixture differs from paint in that it does not contain ammonia and an extremely small percentage of an oxidizing agent, which are used precisely to ensure that the chemical is fixed "inside" the hair, penetrating into it. In the case of tint paint, the oxidizing agent is used to ensure that the coloring matter stays on the hair for some time, and does not come off immediately. Therefore, toning is less harmful to curls.

Full-fledged hair coloring products are not recommended to be used often, as they make the curls brittle, brittle and dry to the touch.

Toning solves this problem in that, due to its composition, it moisturizes the hair. While bleaching dries out the strands, tinting paint makes them a little more oily, thus compensating for the damage done.

Since bleaching does not bring its own pigment into the hair, but destroys the already existing natural one, the tint paint on the clarified strands lasts longer, because it fills the voids that have arisen.

How often can you tint

You can tint curls every two weeks. Around this time, the coloring agent is washed off. So you can constantly maintain the desired shade without compromising the health of the hair.

Also, toning allows you to hide the difference between the lightened part and the regrown darker roots, making the transition between them softer and less noticeable.

Hair Toning Mix

Shade mixtures are of two types.

The first ones are those in which it is necessary to mix the composition (dye and oxidizing agent in the recommended proportion). In this case, tint paint is applied to freshly washed, slightly damp strands.

There are also coloring compounds that are ready to use immediately, without mixing.

The tinting mixture settles on the surface of the hair instantly. It is necessary that the curls are wet, so the paint will be distributed evenly over the entire length. Otherwise, in those areas that were treated with a tint first, the color will be more intense.

The coloring composition should not be applied to damaged hair; before that, the curls must be treated with nourishing balms, conditioners and masks.

The tint is washed off simply with water.

How toning is done at home

Here is a list of what you will need in order to tint your hair yourself:

an old T-shirt, towel or cape in order to protect clothes and skin, the tint mixture is not washed well;

  • a pair of disposable gloves;
  • a container made of plastic, ceramic or glass, a brush for staining;
  • toning paint.

It is not necessary to use a metal container for the mixture, as a chemical reaction of the metal and the dye may occur. In this case, the staining result is unpredictable.

It is also good to cover the areas adjacent to the hair, such as the neck, ears, forehead, etc., with a greasy cream - then the tint mixture, if it gets on the skin, will be washed off immediately afterwards.

The paint can also be applied with gloved hands without a brush, but this is less convenient and there is a higher chance that the tinting mixture will lie unevenly.

Sequencing

After you have washed your hair and let it dry naturally, you can start working with strands that are still slightly damp:

mix, if necessary, the coloring composition in a container, or use a ready-made one, scooping it up as needed with a brush;

  • carefully follow the attached staining instructions;
  • apply the coloring mixture with a brush, evenly distributing it along the entire length of the strands;
  • keep the mixture on your head exactly as long as indicated in the instructions, the time may vary depending on the desired shade intensity;
  • after the required period has elapsed, the tinting agent must be washed off with warm, but not hot water, you do not need to use shampoo;
  • after that, a restoring mask or conditioner can be applied to the dyed hair.

Remember that no paint can be applied to diseased and damaged hair. If you doubt how healthy your curls are, pre-treat them with masks or special care products.

Take care of your curls and choose gentle coloring products, especially after bleaching. The palette of currently existing tint products is enough to get the desired color without causing damage to your hair and even, on the contrary, taking care of it.

Our desire to always be attractive in a new way encourages experimentation with easy changes in the color of curls. This hair toning is especially successful after lightening. This is the most affordable and safe option for a spectacular image update.

Of course, regularly touching up bleached curls in beauty salons requires a lot of time and money. Therefore, we will find out with what and how we can independently tint them at home.

Toning is just a superficial enveloping of hairs with artificial pigment. That is, it is a gentle highlighting of the strands with light compositions. Now special tools have been developed, the use of which does not require special skill: all actions are simple, as when washing your hair.

The essence of the process

The purpose of the procedure is to give saturation to the color, its nuance with soft attractive tints.

  • Toning is very different from coloring. It is not based on permanent dyes that trigger a chemical process in which an artificial pigment changes the living natural pigment of our hair.
  • When using an unstable dye, its molecules do not go deep into the hair, but remain on its natural shell. That is why it is washed out faster - and we again highlight with another shade that we like.
  • The percentage of destructive oxidizing agent in this dye is the lowest - this is an important plus, because clarified curls already need to be restored.

Note! A persistent oxidizing agent eats into the hair shaft, which is unacceptable for hair that has already undergone harmless lightening. And the light oxidizing agent of the tinting agent only helps the artificial pigment molecule to gain a foothold on the hair.

  • For a longer lasting effect, stylists use semi-permanent ones that contain a small dose of ammonia. But how to tint hair after lightening, we decide taking into account their condition: it is better to tint thinned and split ends of bleached strands without ammonia.

  • Tinted curls are elastic and pliable, now they do not break off when styling, do not fade from washing.
  • Simultaneously with the aesthetic effect, the hair will also receive complete care, because modern tinting cosmetics contain useful moisturizing, nourishing components.
  • Of course, tinting agents mildly affect the viability of the hairs, and yet some disrupt their structure if hydrogen peroxide is present in the composition.

Hair toning methods

Now we will decide how to tone the clarified hair.

  • High-quality paints for intensive toning are produced without ammonia, but with weak oxidizing agents and will last 2 months. The tint dye will successfully lighten or darken bleached curls by 2-3 tones.
  • With gentle toning, the shade lasts for 1 month, but there are more benefits from it, because such compositions are enriched with vitamins and useful additives. Depending on the time of application, these products with active pigments will refresh the color or transform it.

In the photo, a rich palette of gels will please even very capricious fashionistas.

  • For the lightest effect, use shampoos, coloring foams, mousses or sprays.. The funds are washed off in a couple of washes, which is very important for outrageous neon shades. They are also beneficial to fair-haired beauties who prefer to experiment with the color of curls.

Give the right shade

Correspondence tables will help us choose the right tint cosmetics, which show how the future color depends on the degree of lightening of the hair.

Let's take into account these nuances - and we will get the desired color, but the closest to the original will always be the most successful.

Advice! When choosing a color, we take into account an important nuance: on bleached strands, the shade will be lighter than on the sample.

  • Blondes with a warm reddish, honey tint should choose a tint of golden tones: champagne, caramel. They will refresh the face and give the curls a youthful glow.
  • With lighter tonal means, we will achieve an excellent effect of slightly burnt strands, which will greatly decorate long curls.
  • Refresh cold smoky and ashy hair with stylish pearl, silver, platinum or wheat dye.
  • Red-haired and fair-haired fashionistas, as well as dark blondes, will undoubtedly suit fashionable shades of copper or spectacular red tones.

  • If we first lighten individual strands, and then tint the entire hair, we will get the richest color of our curls.
  • Tinted wide strands look rich, but we can make a hairstyle and horizontal overflows - coloring is now fashionable.
  • An exclusive effect of naturalness is possible when mixing no more than 3 shades, which are necessarily close to the initial color of our hair. Then gorgeous dark and light highlights render our curls in 3D.

Toning as the next stage of blonding

After bleaching, there is no pigment in the hair structure. And the hair scales are open, so the tint passes into the hairs, replenishing the neutralized pigment.

Immediately after bleaching, we avoid permanent dyes, because the hair has already undergone a strong treatment. And the effect of tint cosmetics is softer, and its pigment is not dangerous.

Consider how to tone hair after lightening and why it is necessary.

  • Innovative semi-permanent dyes not only correct the color of bleached curls, but also take good care of them.
  • Keratin will fill in the voids from the color molecules etched by discoloration. From this, the hair trunks will align, safely getting rid of brittleness and loss.
  • All damaged areas of the hairs are negatively charged, and the coloring molecule is positively charged. Therefore, thinned places are filled with pigment, which successfully strengthens the hair.
  • Wax in semi-permanent dyes also strengthens bleached hairs and adds shine to them.
  • The protein gently smoothes the hair surface, which now reflects the color as much as possible.

As a result, we will admire the magnificent color of curls, their wonderful shine and density for 1-2 months. That is why fashionistas prefer toning, because you can often change the image in this most accessible and fastest way.

Technology

  • A peignoir and a collar, when tinted, will protect our clothes from drops of paint, and gloves will protect our hands from it. We will also find a bowl, brush or applicator, buy a tinting agent and an oxidizing agent.
  • Let's prepare the dye plus oxidizing agent in the proportion recommended by the instructions. There are ready-made tint solutions with an oxidizing agent on sale.
  • Hair washed with regular shampoo (without balm) will dry a little.

Note! Wet hair takes the pigment more evenly, while on dry hair it is absorbed instantly and in ugly spots.

  • Now apply the mixture to wet, clean strands.
  • Let's divide them into 4 parts: from one ear to the other, then from the middle of the forehead to the neck.
  • Let's paint over the strands on the back of the head with the composition, then - at the face and in the final - regrown roots. At the same time, we comb it exclusively with a non-metallic and rare comb so that the paint lies evenly.
  • Those strands that we process with the composition first will turn out to be darker later.
  • Split ends may appear darker due to overly open scales.

Advice! We remove random drops of the product from the skin with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

  • We learn about the duration of the procedure from the instructions for the purchased tinting agent, but on average it will take about 20 minutes. And you don’t need to warm your head with a towel.
  • Then wash off the paint well with water and then use the usual shampoo. Neutralization is not needed, because the process is not chemical.
  • Subsequently, we take care, as for colored strands, using appropriate masks, balms.

Gentle and light toning

The surface dye does not lighten, but after bleaching, a rise of 1 tone is possible. The resulting shade is washed out gradually and can withstand up to 24 washes. And repeated highlighting with your own hands is also a quality care that nourishes the hairs, preventing them from falling out and delamination.

Balms and masks

  • 100 ml of balm (mask) is enough for 4 hair coloring of medium length.
  • Wet clean, distributing it also with a comb.

Advice! Coloring your hair in small rows will give a better, uniform result.

  • The staining time depends on the intensity of the desired shade.
  • Then we rinse with warm water, but we wet the strands with an old towel, because such products, unfortunately, will stain it.

Tinted compositions of short-term action

The lightest formulas have also been developed, which are washed off during the first wash.

Shampoos

  • The advantage of such shampoos is their double action: they clean the hair well and at the same time color it shallowly and therefore harmlessly.
  • We lather this shampoo on already damp hair so that the color is uniform.
  • Let it stand on wet strands for 5-10 minutes, and they will acquire a natural beautiful shade.
  • The longer we keep it on the head, the richer, brighter the color.
  • In 2-3 doses, we effectively enhance the color, and after repeated use, it becomes more intense.

Penki

Long curls that have been grown and cherished for many years have ceased to please with their color? Or did you want a healthy surge of emotions and sensations, but at the same time it’s scary to experiment with chemical paints? Hair tinting at home is what you need. How it differs from ordinary staining, the positive and negative aspects of the procedure, and, finally, how to conduct a beauty session on your own at home, we will tell you in more detail.

Toning or coloring

The procedure differs from conventional staining in several ways.

  • The composition of the dye. There is no need to penetrate into the structure of the rod to remove the pigment to give a shade. Such products contain a gentle coloring base without ammonia.
  • The list of ingredients includes oils, minerals, vitamins, nutrients. look well-groomed and shiny, their structure improves. By performing this procedure, you combine coloring with care.
  • Toning on dark hair, or after lightening, allows you to reduce the difference between the color of the growing root and the entire length of the rod.
  • Such coloring agents are washed off with each wash.

The disadvantages of the procedure include the rapid washing off of the composition and the inability to radically change the color. Everything else is a plus.

Who is home tinting suitable for?

The main differences from coloring are clear, it remains only to derive a general formula for whom toning is ideal:

  • for girls who want to look as natural as possible, tinting dark hair will give an excellent result;
  • those whose hair structure is already damaged, and dyeing with chemical dyes is contraindicated;
  • persons who have grown their hair for a long time and are afraid to experiment with color, and the soul requires change;
  • blondes to smooth out an unwanted yellow tint;
  • brown-haired women and who want to add a little zest to the existing color;
  • after highlighting to give the hair the desired shade;
  • those with limited time.

Important! In any case, before experimenting, collect information about certain means and the rules for their use. Hair tinting is a harmless procedure, but caution does not hurt. Read reviews from real people.

What are the types of paints for tinting

There are several types that can be used depending on the goals.

  1. Resistant. These are funds, the effect of which will be kept for about a month.
  2. Gentle tint. The tone will be visually determined for up to two weeks.
  3. Shampoos, conditioners, balms. It is necessary to use them after two or three hair washing procedures.
  4. Biologically active substances containing a therapeutic caring complex.
  5. Rinsing decoctions of herbs.

Choose the tool that best suits your needs. To what kind the soul lies more - it's up to you.

Are there rules for the procedure?

Hair tinting at home begins with the selection of a quality product and familiarization with the instructions.

Important! Never neglect an allergy test. Even if there were no problems before.

Unlike chemical dyes, which are best applied to unwashed, dry hair, hair dye is applied to wet, clean curls. Before the procedure, wash your hair and lightly dry it with a towel. If we are talking about a tinting shampoo or conditioner, follow the instructions.

How to do your own toning

You need to tone your hair in this order.

  • Wrap your shoulders with a cape, comb your hair well.
  • Separate a strand of medium thickness with a comb, apply the product closer to the root and stretch along the entire length of the strand with a comb or brush.
  • Move from the crown down to the neck from the back of the head. Then from the crown to the growth line at the temples and at the end, color the bangs.
  • Apply the rest of the product to the head and spread evenly with the palms of your hands.
  • Hold as instructed.
  • Rinse without shampoo, patting your hair with your palms.

Are there any features of hair tinting after bleaching, highlighting, lightening

Toning hair after lightening or highlighting is done as follows:

  • Apply the tint with your palms. For uniformity, you can comb your hair with a comb for coloring;
  • wait until the desired effect is achieved, but not for long;
  • rinse with water.

After bleaching, do not choose too dark paint for tinting. As a result, you will get a defiant color or an unwanted green tint may appear.

Advice! Don't forget about natural remedies. You can tone your hair after lightening with a decoction of chamomile. Brown-haired women use green walnut shells to acquire a chic chocolate shade. Of the persistent industrial products, the Estelle and Tonic series are perfect.

To prevent the skin along the edge of the hair growth from staining, use petroleum jelly or a greasy cream. Gently apply it along the growth line, on the ears, temples.
