Beautiful, bright and unusual toys can be sewn with your own hands from the remnants of fabric using the patchwork technique (from the words patch - a piece of fabric, work - work). The art of patchwork is popular all over the world. From small pieces of fabric, whole works of art are sometimes created. In every house you can see a bedspread, a cape or a rug sewn from pieces of fabric with your own hands by your mother or grandmother.

Recently, sewing toys from patchwork has become very popular. Children are very fond of playing with rag toys, especially if they are sewn by the good hands of their mother. Cheerful dolls and animals made of multi-colored pieces of fabric fill the house with warmth and comfort, delighting your loved ones with their sweet charm.

Any hostess in the house will always have a considerable number of multi-colored pieces of fabric left over from sewing any things. For the manufacture of a rag toy, trimmings of all types of fabrics of different sizes and colors are useful. The patchwork technique is not at all difficult to master if you have a sewing machine, a little free time and a great desire to create.

Tools and materials

The patchwork technique is good because it does not require special tools and large cash costs. To make a toy from the remnants of fabric, you will need tools and materials that every needlewoman always has at hand:

  • Scissors, sewing needle, sewing machine, safety pins, colored threads, thimble.
  • Cardboard, tailor's chalk, pencil, tailor's measuring tape, triangle ruler.
  • A few remnants of fabric, buttons, synthetic winterizer for stuffing, braid, beads and other decorative elements for decoration.

Sewing a toy from the remnants of fabric begins with a pattern. Schemes describing the work can be found in needlework magazines or on Internet sites. The algorithm for sewing patchwork toys with your own hands is almost always the same:

  • Having chosen a toy model, we make its pattern out of paper.
  • Using a crayon, transfer the details of the paper pattern to pieces of fabric.
  • We cut out the outlined parts from the fabric and sew them according to the scheme, leaving holes for stuffing.
  • Then we fill the toy with padding polyester, sew on eyes, nose, mouth and decorations.

Using your imagination and skill, you can create real miracles with your own hands from a few pieces of fabric. But we want to reveal to you a few secrets that will help your creations become even more beautiful:

  • Patterns are best done on cardboard, then they will lie tightly on the fabric.
  • It is advisable to draw on the fabric only with a tailor's chalk, pencil or bar of soap.
  • You need to cut out the details of the toy along the shared thread to avoid skewing the fabric.
  • It is undesirable to use cotton wool as a filler for toys, because when wet it can fall off and the toy will lose its appearance.
  • Instead of padding polyester, you can use small beads for stuffing, which will be useful for developing the motor skills of the child's hands.
  • If you have an old toy that has lost its appearance in your house, you can rip it open and get a great toy pattern. By applying imagination and slightly changing its details, you can sew your own unique masterpiece.

For a more detailed study of the patchwork technique, we bring to your attention some original lessons and ideas for making toys from patchwork with your own hands.

Patchwork rainbow fish - master class

We will need: a few bright remnants of fabric, a piece of felt, synthetic winterizer, safety pins, two buttons, a sewing machine.

Step one: print the pattern using a printer and cut out the details of the fish from paper. The pattern is already given with seam allowances.

Step two: attaching the details of the patterns to the shreds, circle them with chalk and cut them out. Draw a heart on a piece of felt and cut it out as well. Having folded the fabric in half, we cut out and cut out 4 parts of the fins, as shown in the diagram. In the same way, we cut out 5 scales, sew them along the contour, turn them inside out and stuff a little padding polyester into them.

Step three: we pin one pair of scales to the half of the body of the fish. On top of the scales we pin the detail of the fish as shown in the diagram, stitch it together with the scales and turn it off. Then we pin three more scales.

Step four: on top of the scales we put the head of the fish, stitch it and turn it off. In the same sequence, we sew the fins stuffed with padding polyester. We put the sewn half of the fish with the front side on the fabric. We sew all the details along the contour, leaving the tail not stitched, and cut it out. In rounded places, we make notches on the allowances for the seam so that the seams do not tighten.

Step five: we turn the sewn fish inside out and stuff it with padding polyester. We sew the sections of the tail by hand, as shown in the diagram. Sew a felt heart on the ponytail. Then we sew on buttons-eyes. Cheerful bright fish, made by hand, is ready.

In almost every home you can find unnecessary clothes or scraps of material. The ability to sew can turn these things into original interior items, gifts for relatives and friends, or toys for children. Do-it-yourself fabric crafts for the home can be not only a useful hobby for novice authors, but also an additional source of income for craftsmen who have long been fond of needlework.

Sewing can be started at a fairly early age. For schoolchildren, do-it-yourself light fabric crafts can become one of the elements of labor training. To start acquaintance with the creation of textile things should be with simple work.

Pouch with strings

The simplest craft consists of a whole piece of material. For its manufacture you will need:

Making a bag is very easy. Even an elementary school student can cope with this work.

Take a piece of material 17 * 31 cm and fold it in half along the long edge with the front side inward. Free sections on the side and bottom are fixed with pins. Then these two sides are sewn with an overlock seam. The distance between the stitches should be 5-7 mm. After completing this step, the pins are removed from the side seams.

The upper edge of the product is tucked 2 cm, secured with pins and stitched with a regular line seam.

The bag is turned inside out. Two small holes are cut in the upper part and overcast with small stitches. The string is threaded through these slots.

The bag is ready. Depending on the fabric used, bag can be used to store jewelry, accessories and threads for needlework, herbs and seeds. And also from them you can make original packaging for gifts and pleasant surprises.

Stuffed Toys

Quite a simple type of do-it-yourself fabric crafts for schoolchildren are soft toys. First, you should master the manufacturing technology of simple products, consisting of 1-2 parts. For example, you can try to sew a cute bear. To create it, you need to prepare:

  • a piece of fleece, thin felt or baize;
  • several small buttons;
  • filler;
  • needle and thread;
  • scissors;
  • a ribbon;
  • paper.

First you need to prepare a pattern. You can draw it yourself or download it from the Internet and print it.

It is not necessary to take a new material for the first fabric craft. You can use an old fleece, felt or linen thing, a flannelette diaper or a faux fur blanket. The fabric of the required size is folded in half and the template is transferred to it. When cutting fabric, allowances for seams of 5-10 mm in size should be taken into account.

Buttons are sewn to one of the details, which designate the eyes, nose and torso of the future toy.

The parts are connected and stitched with an overcast seam, leaving a small hole for stuffing, which can be used as a synthetic winterizer or cotton wool. The stuffing hole is carefully sewn up. The bear is decorated with a ribbon ball.

Kitchen accessories

Another example of a simple do-it-yourself fabric product for beginners is kitchen potholders. They can be made from whole pieces of fabric or use the popular patchwork technique.

To make mittens, you will need: a fabric made from natural materials, a synthetic winterizer, needles and threads, a palm template.

To make the products universal, the template should be made in the form of an oval arch. When constructing a pattern, the size of the seams should be taken into account and marked with a dotted line. Transfer the finished template to the fabric.

For one craft, you need to prepare four fabric parts and two synthetic winterizer parts. The size of these elements is equal to the size of the template, excluding seam allowances.

Two pieces of fabric are folded with the right side inward and stitched. The workpiece is turned on the front side. A synthetic winterizer is placed inside, the free edges are tucked and the part is sewn up. The second part is made in the same way. Then they are connected and sewn with an overcast seam. At the end of the work, a loop from a strip of fabric is sewn to the craft.

Interior details

What makes a home warm and cozy? Of course, small details made by hand from textiles, paper, wood and other materials. Crafts from pieces of fabric used to decorate rooms give it a finished and unique look.

Christmas decorations

Making toys for the Christmas tree from fabric is a fairly simple, but at the same time interesting and exciting activity. Products are made of felt or fleece, decorated with decorative embroidery. To create textile Christmas decorations, you will need pieces of fabric, filler, threads and needles, scissors (it is preferable to use curly ones), various decorative elements.

To make a small fun Christmas tree you will need:

The fleece is folded in half and the outline of the Christmas tree is drawn on it. If it is planned to perform a large number of the same type of products, then the patterns should be transferred to the fabric according to a template made of dense material.

Two parts are cut out along the outlined contour, the front side of which is decorated with snowflakes. Eyes are glued onto one of them, cilia and a mouth-smile are embroidered.

After decorating, the parts are folded on the wrong sides and sewn with a seam over the edge. On top of the crafts, a hole is left for stuffing and fastening a loop to fix the toy on the Christmas tree. The hole is carefully sewn up. Christmas decoration is ready.

Textile basket

The ability to create fabric crafts will allow you to fill the interior with unique items for various purposes. A textile basket will look unusual and stylish on the dining table. In order to sew it, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

It should be noted that it is optimal to sew this craft on a sewing machine. With only needles and threads at hand, you can also work on creating this piece of furniture.

First of all, it is necessary to cut out three parts from two types of fabric and a synthetic winterizer, which should be slightly smaller than the textile parts. All elements are folded in the following order: lining fabric, front side and synthetic winterizer. All three layers are combined into one blank, leaving one side for eversion.

Then proceed to the formation of the sides of the basket. To do this, side seams are sewn at the required distance from the edge. A piece of cardboard equal in size to the desired size of the side is placed in the middle part, and this part is sewn up inside. Then insert the bottom and sides and also lay a seam, parallel to the previous line. At the end of this stage of work, the last cardboard part is inserted inside the blank and this side is stitched.

Basket ties can be made from ribbons, braid, or sewn from the fabric used in the work. To do this, a rectangular piece of fabric is folded in half and ironed, outlining the middle. The free ends are again bent to the center of the part and ironed. The tips tuck and stitch the element on three sides. For one basket, you need to prepare eight ties.

In order to attach the ribbons to the basket, you need to slightly open the seams in two places on each side and insert the parts into the resulting holes. The ties are fixed with small seams. Then they are connected in pairs and tied in the form of beautiful bows. The basket is ready. It can be used as a candy bowl, bread box or put decorative fruits in it.

Decorative fruits and berries

Most kitchen interiors are done in restrained soothing colors. You can create a bright color spot from textile crafts in the form of fruits and berries. Bright scraps of any fabric are suitable for their manufacture. And you will also need needles, threads, any soft filler, toothpicks, paper and a pencil.

Patterns of fruits and berries are drawn on a sheet of thick paper. By downloading them from the Internet, you can greatly simplify this stage of work. For example, you can assemble a composition of apples, pears and strawberries.

To make an apple, you will need two parts of an apple and one leaf of green fabric. It is not necessary to use a single-color material, as crafts made from multi-colored fabric will look unusual and stylish.

The apple parts are folded right side in and sewn together, leaving room for stuffing on the wide side of the part. The workpiece is turned out and filled with padding polyester. Then the edges are stitched with a basting seam and pulled together. The thread is not cut, but the needle is passed through the workpiece and returned back, pulling it. This is necessary to give the craft the shape of an apple. A leaf is sewn to the fruit with the same thread, which is additionally fixed with transparent glue.

In the same way, a pear is performed. From below, a small textile circle or a small brown button is glued to the craft. The leaf is glued to the stalk of a wooden stick and fixed inside the fruit with a drop of glue.

Strawberries are sewn according to a similar principle, but they are not pulled together in height. After stuffing and tightening the top seam, a shamrock is sewn to the craft.

Sewing a bunch of grapes is quite simple. For work, you will need circles of purple or green fabric, filler, a flap of fabric for leaves, wire, colored tape, a needle and thread.

All circles along the edge are stitched with a seam forward with a needle and pulled together a little. The filler is placed in the resulting small bags, the hole is tightened and fixed. Then all the balls are sewn together, forming a bunch of grapes. Several leaves are cut out of green fabric and sewn onto the craft.

Patchwork products

Patchwork, or patchwork, is experiencing a new peak in popularity. From ordinary scraps of fabric, you can create furniture bedspreads and pillows, blankets and bumpers for cribs. It is better to start acquaintance with this technique with simple things. For example, you can sew bumpers in a crib. For this work, you will need square pieces of fabric, the size and number of which depends on the author's idea. For stuffing use sintepukh or holofiber. And you will also need threads, a needle, satin ribbons, paper and a pencil.

The manufacture of crafts using the patchwork technique begins with the selection of fabric, the calculation of its required quantity and the creation of a sketch of the future product.

Two pieces of fabric are sewn together, leaving a small opening for stuffing. Fill the pads quite tightly and sew up. Produce the required number of elements. For a standard bed 60 * 120 cm, you will need 432 squares of fabric measuring 12 * 12 cm, from which 216 pillows 10 * 10 cm are sewn.

Then the prepared elements are sewn into strips of 6 pieces. The work uses a manual seam "over the edge". Strongly tighten the parts should not be. The stripes are sewn together. First you need to connect the corners of the squares and fix them with pins.

Satin ribbon ties are sewn to the finished sides.

Needlework helps not only to spend your free time usefully, but also to replenish the interior of your home with interesting fabric crafts. By involving children in this activity, you can develop their perseverance, diligence, fine motor skills and creative thinking.
