Introduction:
Drawing letters by cells was once very popular among schoolchildren. They were studied in notebooks, in drafts, in notebooks, in diaries (at least, I was fond of this in my school years). I wanted to remember my hobby and show that it can be both interesting and useful for people of any age (and not only for children).
Drawing on a finished grid is much easier than drawing on a blank sheet. It allows both sizes and proportions to be easily observed, as well as to come up with a variety of letter configurations.
Children can be dictated to. Under dictation, they, of course, will be able to construct the contours of the letters. Here are some, for example.

But it will be difficult to give volume to such letters. Now, if their thickness is not one cell, but two, then building the volume will be much easier.

Preliminary work:
On the Internet, there was little on the topic of interest to us.

Volumetric letters were represented by such "tricks"
Here the letters, as it were, "fall into a notebook." This effect is achieved by hatching in different directions and a deep shadow.

In this case, the letters seem to "hover" above the sheet. This effect is achieved due to the falling shadow.

There were only a couple of photographs with three-dimensional letters in the cells.

That's right, with a ballpoint pen, we drew "plump" letters.

But if you add color to this technique ... It should turn out very beautiful!

Options
1 Take two letters at once - b, g

Let's circle them two cells thick. If you draw letters one cell thick, it will be much more difficult to draw them in volume, with shadows.

Breaking down into cells

Color in a checkerboard pattern

Let's draw down and to the right, obliquely, through two diagonal cells. They will show the thickness of the letters. Connect the dots and paint over this thickness.

Using the blue color, select the edges of the letters. (This step can be done earlier)

In some places we make the shadow even darker. We decorate empty chess cells with blue dots.

2 The next pair of letters - A, T

We draw their contours.

We decorate them with a "striped" pattern.

We draw and color the volume (shadows).

Outline the edges of the letters.

3 letters F, W, U

We draw the letter Z and color it.

Let's circle the letter.

Adding Shadows

Draw and color the letter Z

Outlining the letter

Adding Volume

Draw the letter U

We draw the volume, but do not color the letter.

Decorate the letter U

RESULTS
As a result, you can consider an alphabet or a group of letters drawn in the same style.
In order to draw in the same style, you need to decide on the basic elements (thickness, height, fillets). So, it is enough to depict some letters and the way to represent all other letters will be clear.
Because P is both C and Z, and F, and b and b, and B. and S
P is both T, and N, and G.
K - This is both F and X,
O - this is Yu and C and E
