What wool is felt made from? Felt: what is it made of, types and application of fabric. More information about felt circles

The word "felt" comes from the Turkic "ojlyk", and literally means "veil". This type of material is a dense textile mass made by felting wool, which is produced in a non-woven way. Felt products have served people for many thousands of years, and so far this material has not lost its relevance and popularity.

Advantages of felt

Felt has long been used for the manufacture of carpets, clothing and footwear. At the same time, the material has several useful qualities, among which are the following:

  1. The ability to retain heat, that is, low thermal conductivity.
  2. The material passes air well enough, and does not allow a large amount of moisture to linger inside the products.
  3. High level of sound and noise insulation of the material.
  4. Wide possibilities of using felt for the manufacture of various types of products.
  5. Felt is made from natural raw materials and is an environmentally friendly material.

Felt types

As a rule, felt is made in the form of panels of various sizes, which also have different thicknesses. Depending on the type of products for the manufacture of which it is intended, felt is divided into several main types:

  • Felt- a type of felt that is made from the finest goat or rabbit down.

  • Velours- a type of felt covered with thick, but at the same time soft and short villi.

According to the composition of the feedstock used for the manufacture of the material, felt is divided into three main types:

  • - contains only natural animal hair in its composition. Depending on the degree of softness and the level of wool dressing, fine-wooled, coarse-wooled and semi-coarse-wooled types of felt are distinguished.

  • - 100% man-made, synthetic polyester fibers.

  • Technical felt- is a coarse wool material made on the basis of low-grade, inexpensive natural wool with the addition of vegetable fibers (no more than 2.5 - 3%) and mineral impurities (no more than 0.2 - 0.5%). The dense and rough structure of the material, as well as its considerable thickness, make it possible to use technical felt for the manufacture of products with a high degree of protection of metal parts during friction and vibration.

History of felt

The art of felting is based on the unique property of wool to tangle and bond when wet and shaken. This quality of wool became known to pastoralists in ancient times, and they began to use it for practical purposes. Thus, felt products appeared long before the invention of spinning. Carpets, coverings for dwellings, shoes and clothes were made from this convenient and affordable material.

Felt was especially popular among nomadic tribes, because they had herds of cattle, the wool of which served as the raw material for the production of material. In addition, felt products (yurt coverings or carpets) were relatively light in weight, and, if necessary, they could be easily moved to another place.

The process of making felt was quite simple, but at the same time it required certain knowledge and practical skills. Animal wool, selected for felting, was carefully combed, carefully selecting various particles of weeds, debris and mechanical impurities.

Then all the collected wool was sorted by the thickness of the hairs. After the selected wool of one variety was treated with boiling water in order to cleanse it of sebum and fat, as well as various contaminants.

Thus, a loose fabric was obtained, which had to be folded and unfolded several times, so that the individual wool fibers would gradually fall off, while uniting into a homogeneous, whole mass.

Depending on the thickness of the selected woolen hairs and the duration of the felting process, the masters received thick or thin felt, which was intended for the manufacture of various types of products.

The thick wool produced a more durable material, suitable for the production of carpets, coverings for dwellings, as well as for the production of shoes. But from thin varieties of felt, comfortable clothes were made, which were generously decorated with embroidery.

To increase the strength of felt, a little thick wool was added to thin wool. The resulting felt panels were decorated with embroidery, which at the same time increased the strength or the garment.

Often, before felting, the wool was bleached, and then a pattern of wool dyed in different colors was laid out on a white background. Similar carpets continue to be made in our time, and they fit perfectly into modern apartments.

The manufacture of such products was carried out by special specialists, who were called wool beaters. They were one of the oldest and most respected group of artisans, and their art remains in demand to this day.

felt products

From ancient times to the present day, people have learned to make many types of felt products. Among the most famous and popular among them are the following:

  • Felt boots- a type of winter footwear, the manufacture of which has long been common in Russia. According to the design features, felt boots can be either the simplest (but at the same time practical, warm and comfortable), or generously decorated with embroidered patterns or appliqué.

  • Carpets- very beautiful, easy to use and durable products that harmoniously fit into, made in oriental style.

  • Felt hats- one of the fashionable and popular accessories of modern man. Felt hats are worn by both men and women.

  • Burka- a sleeveless cloak made of white, beige, red, brown or black felt. It is the national men's clothing of the peoples of the Caucasus.

  • Sirmak- a Kazakh carpet made of felt and generously decorated with national patterns. A feature of this type of carpets is the technology of their manufacture. Syrmak is made from separate pieces of felt of different colors (most often a combination of white and black colors is used).

When forming a pattern, a mosaic technique is used, in which the pattern cuts into the base at the level of its surface, after which this composition is superimposed on another piece of felt and carefully quilted, and then stitched along the patterned contour with a colored cord.

  • Shirdak- is a product of the Kyrgyz folk craft. Shirdak is one of the most difficult carpets in terms of manufacturing techniques. In the process of making shirdak, patterns are also cut on felt of different colors, and then combined into a single colorful composition.

Kyrgyz shirdak
  • - a special type of national headdress in the Kirghiz and Kazakhs. It is made of thin high quality felt and embroidered with national patterns.

  • Yurt cover- is a type of portable dwelling on a frame base, covered with felt on top. This type of structures is typical for the Turkic and Mongolian nomadic peoples.

Thus, felt has been faithfully serving people for centuries, and is acquiring new forms of use in various fields. Felt is also used as insulation for flooring. This simple technique will help bring an atmosphere of warmth and comfort to every home.

    Felt

Felt- dense non-woven textile material made of felted wool. It is usually made in the form of panels, which have different thicknesses, depending on the purpose. Felt varieties made from fine down of rabbits or goats are known as felt. Felt with a short, thick and soft pile is called velor.

The only natural material from which felt can be made is wool, and sheep's wool is best. Wool fibers have an upper scaly layer - the cuticle. Thanks to him, the fibers can adhere to each other under the influence of hot water and steam. This is the principle of felting.

Felt refers to non-woven materials, the manufacturing tradition of which dates back more than five millennia. If a fabric made from plant fibers is associated with farmers, then the nomads and pastoralists of Eurasia, whose main source of livelihood was sheep herds, learned how to felt sheep's wool. Until now, in Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran, Buryatia and other places, wool felt is made in the same way as thousands of years ago. This dense and warm fabric does not lose its popularity, as evidenced by the real “felt boom” of recent years.

    What is felt for?

Felt still occupies a very important place in the everyday life of many Asian peoples. Temporary housing (yurt) and almost all of its interior are created from it, protective armor and household items were made from it, thin felt was and is used for shoes, hats, as the main fabric of winter clothing.

They say that the smell of sheep's wool drives away karakurts. Therefore, natural felt was considered a magical and healing agent (however, modern medicine does not refute the latter), it was carefully trimmed and decorated. Until now, three main ways of decorating felt products have been preserved:

    1. The felting of the ornament, in which colored wool is laid out on the base in accordance with the pattern, after which they begin to felt (Turkmen felts).
    2. An application that is widely used today.
    3. Embroidery (Buryat and Mongolian felt).

Russia and other Slavic peoples adopted this woolen non-woven textile from the Asian peoples, as evidenced by the Turkic origin of its name (ajlyk - coverlet). Felt has become a material for widespread, indispensable boots in frosty and snowy winters..

This fabric also spread to Europe, primarily in the form of thin felt, which is made by rolling a mixture of wool and down between rollers.

At present, not only woolen, but also especially durable artificial felt from synthetic fibers is being produced, which is used mainly for technical needs.

For technical applications, such types of felt are produced as:

    • coarse wool (6-12 mm), which is used for thermal and sound insulation, underlayment for linoleum, various gaskets, seals, filters, etc.;
    • thin technical (2.4-6 mm), which is used in electrical engineering;
    • furniture, which is relatively soft and is used in the manufacture of upholstered furniture and mattresses.

Felt- This is a special type of textile, characterized by high density. It can be made from both synthetic materials and natural wool. Natural felt is very popular due to its properties and high level of environmental friendliness and safety.

It is produced, as a rule, from the wool of sheep of the North Caucasus. The special technology of felting wool includes the use of steam and water. Synthetic felt is made in much the same way: the fibers are compressed, twisted, tangled, tangled, forming a single web. This material has high strength. Both types of felt are presented with us in a wide variety of density, thickness, color and technical characteristics.
