Papier-mâché from toilet paper: how to cook the mass itself and mold a couple of wonderful figures. Ideas for the week! Crafts from papier-mâché

DIY crafts in our minds are usually associated with children's creativity. However, now many adults devote their free time to this occupation, with pleasure creating interesting and original gizmos. It is to this trend that we owe a renewed interest in the ancient technique of making decor elements using the papier-mâché technique.

DIY crafts in our minds are usually associated with children's creativity.

Directions of paper art

Initially, papier-mâché gifts were only available to aristocrats.

Papier-mâché originated in France. It happened at the end of the 16th century. Translated from the language of the pioneers, this hobby is translated as “torn paper” or “chewed paper”. Initially, dolls were made from paper pulp mixed with glue. Then snuffboxes, music boxes, and so on. Today there are two branches of technology:

  • crafts from paper pulp mixed with glue and paste (this allows you to sculpt voluminous figures, like from dough);
  • products made from paper strips glued to the base (this method is called mashing).

They are labor intensive. In the first case, it is enough to prepare the mass and, having shaped it, dry it well. And in the second - carefully, layer by layer, put strips of paper on a base made of cardboard, wood or plastic. Whatever method you choose, you can make dolls, jewelry, jewelry boxes, souvenirs, masks, and more from papier-mâché.

This is interesting. The huge rotating globe used by Harry Potter in the movie of the same name was made by a Scottish master from papier-mâché. Following the success of the Wizard Boy films, the set was auctioned off for $20,000.

A special place in a number of toilet paper crafts is occupied by unpainted gizmos.

Initially, papier-mâché meant making dolls.

What paper is used

For papier mache, it is better to use the cheapest toilet paper.

For papier-mache, you can take any paper. But it's best to use:

  • newspapers,
  • cardboard,
  • toilet paper.

Here on the manufacture of crafts based on papier-mâché from toilet paper and dwell in detail.

We prepare a mass of papier-mâché from toilet paper

For voluminous crafts, you need a kind of paper dough, which is easiest to make from the most useful paper - toilet paper. The convenience of this material is due to the fact that it soaks well in water. Consider several options for preparing a mass of papier-mâché.

You can prepare mass for papier-mâché more than once

Method one: flour or starch-based paste

  1. We tear two rolls of toilet paper into small pieces, pour ½ liter of hot water and let it brew for 5 to 8 hours.
  2. Cooking paste. We fill the pan with a suitable volume (2 liters) with water, put on fire, stirring.
  3. In a glass, mix cold water with 4 tbsp. l. starch (or flour), after boiling, remove from heat.
  4. In the meantime, we bring the paper mass to the condition. We put it on the fire, let it boil.
  5. Mix the pieces of paper with a blender or combine until smooth.
  6. Mix the mass with the paste and let stand for 20 minutes to thicken the mixture. Material for papier-mâché crafts is ready.

This amount is enough for 2-3 medium-sized crafts, and it is a pleasure to sculpt them, as the dough turns out to be elastic, soft. How long will the finished figures dry? Approximately 3-4 days. If you doubt your patience, then use another recipe.

The second way: use PVA glue or putty

If you add more glue, the material will turn out to be slightly "rubber". This is convenient when making round-shaped crafts. This amount of papier-mache is enough for 1 medium-sized craft, which will dry in 1-2 days. If you have made more of the finished material, do not be discouraged: it can be folded into a plastic bag and stored in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks. To work, you need to warm it up in a water bath.

Cooking a thicker mass - the third way

To obtain a mass resembling plasticine or clay, add wallpaper paste to the mixture.

Master class of papier-mâché crafts based on toilet paper

Before starting work, you need to prepare everything you need so as not to be distracted in the process.

Making crafts from paper dough does not imply the presence of a frame; the creation process resembles modeling from clay or plasticine. The only difference is that the finished thing must be dried. But that's not the hardest part. The fact is that, despite the seeming lightness, it is rather difficult to make small details, for example, faces, from a mass of papier-mâché. So the complexity of step-by-step instructions will be determined by this very parameter: the presence or absence of small elements.

Making a snowman

This is a great craft for those who are just starting their acquaintance with the papier-mâché technique - there are few details.

Materials:

  • Mass of papier-mache (from 1-2 rolls of toilet paper), prepared on the basis of PVA glue;
  • A couple of small pieces of cotton;
  • PVA glue;
  • Skewer for barbecue;
  • A piece of cardboard;
  • Acrylic paints (white, black, orange, gray, brown);
  • Tassels.

Working with papier-mâché from toilet paper does not require any special skills. The main thing is to make the right composition for modeling and let it reach the desired condition. When making crafts, it is also important to remember that you should not immediately take on products with many small details, it is better to start with something simpler in order to adapt to the technology of creating original gizmos in the old papier-mâché technique.

In contact with

Papier-mâché crafts are very popular. This simple technology is successfully used by children of all ages and adults. There is nothing surprising.

From papier-mâché, you can make simple gifts for parents for a holiday or birthday, but you can also create real masterpieces that are not ashamed to decorate the interior.

Material Features

Papier-mache is a mixture of paper pulp with an adhesive. Any shredded paper or cardboard can serve as a base (filler). One of the most technologically advanced materials is toilet paper, because. it dissolves well in water, forming a homogeneous mass.

Papier-mache is a mixture of paper pulp with an adhesive

The binder is an adhesive. The most common options are:

  1. Ordinary stationery glue or PVA glue. It is most suitable for simple crafts performed by children of primary preschool age.
  2. Wallpaper glue. It is easy to prepare, which ensures wide application.
  3. Paste. It can be prepared independently by dissolving the starch in boiling water while stirring.

To impart certain properties to the mixture, other components are additionally introduced. Plasticity is imparted to the mass by vegetable oil and detergents. To give strength to crafts after hardening, gypsum, alabaster or putty is added to the raw materials.

Attention! Each master has his own secrets of making papier-mâché and adjusts the recipe empirically in his own way.

The manufacturing technology of papier-mâché crafts includes several stages:

  1. Preparation of source material.
  2. Formation of the base of the craft. Several options may be used. Flat crafts - the mass is laid out on a flat surface in the form of a panel. Thin-walled volumetric crafts - a complex shape is covered with a thick mixture, while the mass repeats all the depressions and bulges. A typical example is masks. Volumetric figures - they are formed on the frame or by analogy with plasticine. So you can make dolls and figurines of various animals.
  3. Hardening crafts in natural conditions. The process can take several days, during which the product must be at rest.
  4. Coloring. After the figurine has completely hardened, its final painting is carried out with the drawing of all the details. The best option is acrylic paint in different colors. Volumetric coloring is provided by adding the desired dye (pigments, gouache) to the prepared raw material. Often the figurines are varnished (colorless or with a tinted effect).

Papier-mache is quite malleable material. Depending on the consistency, it can fill and repeat the most complex shapes.

Idea! From it you can make decorative dishes, vases, caskets, figurines, various masks and decorative elements in different styles with your own hands. The fantasy of the master is not limited.

Papier-mache is quite malleable material. Depending on the consistency, it can fill and repeat the most complex shapes.

Where can you start

The technique of working with papier-mache is easy to master, but for beginners it is recommended to select simple products. The child must feel the material itself and master the basics of the formation of crafts.

One of the simplest techniques is mashing. The principle consists in pasting any form with paper pieces with smearing with an adhesive composition. After the glue dries, the craft is removed from the mold and painted or varnished.

Interesting! The most typical example of the use of mashing is the manufacture of plates or cups. Such crafts are shown in the photo.

The most typical example of the use of machining is the manufacture of plates or cups.

They are made in the following order:

  1. First, small strips are cut from newspapers or any other paper.
  2. As a form, you can use a plate or bowl of the desired size. The surface of the mold must be coated with vegetable oil or any cream to make it easier to remove the finished product.
  3. Applying the first layer. Paper strips are wetted in water and carefully applied over the entire surface of the mold in a continuous layer.
  4. The formed layer is covered with PVA glue. The next layer of paper is applied. All subsequent layers are glued alternately until a thickness of 4-6 mm is reached.
  5. The workpiece is left alone until completely dry and hardened. After that, it is carefully removed from the mold.
  6. The edges of the workpiece are carefully aligned, and the inner and outer surfaces are polished with fine-grained sandpaper.
  7. The final look is given by staining. You can apply any pattern, ornament, pattern.

Another simple craft - "Gingerbread Man". It is made similar to a plate, but a balloon is used as a mold.

The inflated ball is pasted over with paper pieces, and after the workpiece has hardened, it is pierced and carefully removed. After coloring, you get a funny Gingerbread Man.

Crafts for the New Year

New Year's papier-mâché crafts can replace Christmas decorations and decorate the room. Beautiful balls can be made using the technique of mashing.

For such toys, you can take any base - rubber, plastic balls. Paper pieces are glued on top, which are painted and varnished. The papier-mache surface can be decorated with sparkles or small colorful pictures.

For the manufacture of three-dimensional figurines-decorations, a mixture is prepared. It's best to use toilet paper. A sufficiently plastic mass can be obtained by dissolving 1 roll of paper in 700-750 ml of water.

After obtaining a homogeneous mass, the water must be squeezed out, a binder (PVA glue, wallpaper glue or paste) should be added. The mixture should resemble thick sour cream in consistency. You can make figurines using children's sand molds. The mass is poured into them, and after curing, it is carefully removed and painted.

Features of making dolls

There are many ways to make a papier mache doll, from very simple children's crafts to original artistic creations.

The mass is prepared on the basis of loose paper - toilet paper, napkins, egg containers, etc. As an adhesive composition, PVA glue, wallpaper glue or paste is used. The consistency of the mass should correspond to soft plasticine.

There are many ways to make a papier mache doll, from very simple children's crafts to original art creations.

A simple doll is made in this order:

  1. A mold for the head is molded from plasticine. Then it is covered with a thin layer of paper pulp. After it hardens, it is necessary to make an incision through which to remove the plasticine. The final formation of the thickness of the workpiece is carried out by adding the required amount of mass. The thickness should be 5-6 mm. Eye sockets, nose, mouth, ears are formed.
  2. A wire frame is assembled for the body. The prepared mass is superimposed on it with the simultaneous formation of the neck, arms and legs.
  3. Connecting the torso to the head with PVA glue.
  4. The doll outfit is sewn from the fabric of the desired color.
  5. The whole doll is painted with white acrylic paint. You can add a little peach shade. Facial features are drawn.
  6. Hair is made of floss or woolen threads. They are glued to the head, a hairstyle is formed.
  7. Clothes are put on and fastened.

From papier-mâché, you can also make a complex doll with movable elements (articulated doll). Such crafts are within the power of an experienced craftsman.

It is assembled according to pre-prepared drawings. The composition includes the following ingredients: toilet paper, PVA glue, gypsum-based putty, liquid detergent.

From papier-mâché, you can also make a complex doll with movable elements (articulated doll)

The mass is prepared as follows. Paper is dissolved in hot water (55-65 degrees) for 5-6 hours, it is better to use a mixer for mixing. After obtaining a homogeneous mass, water is squeezed out through gauze, glue and detergent are added (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of the mixture). The last putty is introduced into the mixture (120-140 g / l).

All elements of the doll are fashioned from papier-mâché separately. For a movable connection between them, a strong tight elastic band or screw connection is used. In the latter case, a screw is inserted into one of the parts, and a nut into the adjacent element. The mating surfaces must be well finished to ensure a snug fit.

steampunk technique

Recently, steampunk figurines have come into fashion. In fact, this is a fantastic allegory with the transfer of ancient and outlandish elements.

In such figures, originality and irony are especially appreciated. The jumble of constituent elements may be the most unexpected, but they should create a unified impression.

Recently, steampunk figurines have come into fashion.

As an example of steampunk crafts, consider making a fantastic Fish.

The materials used are papier-mâché, foam board, cardboard, hardboard sheet, leatherette, carnations for furniture upholstery, various small gears, shells and all kinds of spare parts for household appliances.

Then the workpiece is primed to create a brown background, and some details are highlighted with golden acrylic paint. Finally, Rybka is varnished in 3-4 layers. The size of such crafts in length is 85-100 cm.

Making masks

Some of the most impressive papier-mâché crafts are African masks. Such handmade creations can decorate the interior of any apartment. Their size is 35-37 cm in height, 21-24 cm in width.

The mass is prepared on the basis of toilet paper. For one mask, 2 rolls are required. The paper is dissolved in hot water, and then mixed with PVA glue (420-440 g), and thick glue for construction work must be taken. To give plasticity, linseed oil (3 tbsp) is added. When mixing the mixture, it is advisable to use a mixer.

In addition to the indicated colors, African masks can be painted in other colors. Red, yellow and blue elements are often used. Decorate crafts and special details - piercing.

Papier-mache is rightly considered an excellent material for various crafts. Simple products can be made even by small children. For teenagers and adults, such creativity develops into a hobby. Their creations are able to decorate the interior of any apartment.

Crafts from papier-mâché are rightfully considered one of the most popular. It is very easy to work with this soft and plastic mass, which means that accessories from it are obtained in a variety of ways. Papier-mache is traditionally used to make dolls and masks, various theatrical props and dummies, various toys, decorations and even some pieces of furniture.

This material is loved by all art schools and is traditionally taught to work with it. This technique is enjoyed by both children and adults. Even professional sculptors do not neglect working with papier-mâché, because this is a kind of working out of future images.

A bit of history

Papier-mâché sounds French, but the art of creating various accessories from several layers of thin paper did not originate in Europe at all. The "inventors" of the technique of working with papier-mâché are the Chinese. Several millennia ago, they learned how to make clothes out of paper, and then durable armor for their warriors.

Later, this art was mastered by residents of other countries of the East. At the same time, most of the products began to be coated with a special water-repellent composition, which, moreover, added strength to them. So people learned to make armor, ritual masks, various ceremonial paraphernalia.

Art became interested in Europe as well. Interestingly, enterprising Westerners quickly realized that papier-mâché could be used to create various fakes that could be mistaken for real ones from afar. So, for example, fake stucco molding appeared.

Today, this material is actively used in theater and cinema. Most of the decorations are made from papier-mâché.

Papier-mâché techniques

Gluing small pieces on the finished form in several layers

This technique is very convenient for making various masks and complex figures. Most often, it is used in cases where an exact copy of an item is needed. However, its minus is that the glued object most often turns out to be tightly “locked” under a strong layer of paper, and the craft itself becomes heavier (this is not always convenient).

Mixing paper and paste, followed by the manufacture of crafts

This is useful in cases where you need to make a simple figure. As a rule, these are dolls and various toys. It is convenient to work with the mass, because it “grasps” gradually, which means that there is time to correct inaccuracies and remove irregularities.

How to make a mass of papier-mâché with your own hands?

If everything is clear with the first method (you just need to weld a paste or take PVA and stick paper in several layers), then certain difficulties may arise with kneading papier-mâché in the second way.

To knead the "dough" correctly, you need to prepare a container with warm water. We soak soft cardboard into it (egg cartons are great), newspapers or toilet paper. Wait for the material to completely soften. If necessary, you can heat the bowl on the stove from time to time so that the water does not cool down.

When the paper gets wet, it needs to be scrolled with a mixer or chopped in a blender. Then glue is gradually added to the mass. It must be mixed until the substance stops sticking to the hands.

There is also an alternative. But it only works with toilet paper, as it's thin and easy to shred.

More detailed version in this video instruction.

  • If you are using the second method of kneading papier-mâché, do not make too much material until you are sure that you have found your "perfect formula". Glue and paper quality decide a lot.
  • Whichever technique you choose, it's best to dry each layer. It is very convenient to use a hair dryer.
  • The number of layers depends on the type of papier-mâché craft chosen. However, it is worth considering that doing less than 4-5 layers is impractical.
  • When the product is finished, it must be dried for a day - this is the minimum period. For large crafts, the number of days to dry can increase to 3-4.
  • The finished product is usually coated with paint. You can make it monotone. In addition, the unusual papier-mâché painting (the work of Ekaterina Osipovich) also looks beautiful. You can make fancy curls or mosaics. Recently, painting crafts with various coloring sprays has been very popular - this is convenient and practical.
  • You can decorate papier-mâché crafts with stones and beads. You can also glue sequins, sequins, fabric trim, etc. on them.
  • Your creations can also be varnished. This will add durability and strength to them. In addition, the product will be easier to wipe from dust.

Examples and ideas for inspiration

Papier-mache is a simple and cheap technology that allows you to create real masterpieces. Moreover, technology is available for both adults and children. And you won’t need any supernatural materials to create crafts.

There are two ways to create crafts. This can be done by forming shapes from the prepared mass, or by sticking torn paper on some kind of base. With your own hands, you can create a craft for anyone, this does not require any special skills or abilities. It just takes precision and patience.

This technique is successfully used even in kindergartens for the development of motor skills in children. It allows you to create not only children's crafts, but also statues, caskets and many other interior items.

Papier-mâché crafts for beginners

Consider how several types of crafts are made.

Plate

You can make a beautiful saucer or plate with your child.

For this you will need:

  • Napkin;
  • Oilcloth;
  • tassel;
  • Paste;
  • Newspaper;
  • Gouache;
  • Scissors.

The plate is placed upside down and smeared with a thin layer of vegetable oil. This is necessary so that in the future the product can be easily separated from the base. The newspaper is torn into small pieces, each of which is coated with a paste and glued to a plate. You need to start from the middle, moving gradually towards the edges. Newspaper parts are glued in several layers. Moreover, each layer must dry. There will be four in total. After the last layer has dried, the workpiece is separated from the base, the edges are equal with scissors. Several layers of white gouache are applied to the craft. After drying, the finished plate can be decorated with patterns, ornaments or patterns.

Balloon

To make a balloon with your own hands, you need: an old newspaper, a balloon, PVA, a brush, colored paper, a pencil, felt-tip pens, scissors, a napkin.

The newspaper is crushed and wetted with water. The balloon is inflated and lubricated with vegetable oil or greasy glue. The surface of the ball is covered with a layer of wet paper without glue. The next layer is already attached with PVA. The number of layers is 4. Each of them must be smeared with glue and dried. After drying, the surface of the ball can be decorated with applications or painted with paints.

Near the “tail” of the balloon, you need to leave a small hole through which the balloon is later pierced and removed.

Papier-mâché: animals

Let's consider in detail how to make a sheep and a snail.

Lamb

For the frame of the animal, you need to make a base. For her, you need toilet paper soaked in water. It must be in the liquid for 40 minutes. After that, it is wrung out by hand, the water is drained and PVA glue is added. The mass should become homogeneous.

This composition is coated with a capsule from Kinder Surprise. After drying, products, the layer is cut and the capsule is removed. You will need two blanks - for the body and head. The legs are made of paper. To do this, you need to roll small pieces of paper “into a tube”, cutting them with an “asterisk” on one side so that you can glue the legs to the body. To make wool for sheep, you need their cotton wool. Small balls are rolled from it and glued over the entire surface of the head and torso. Ears and a tail are cut out of thick cardboard. Eyes can be cut out of any picture. You can decorate a sheep with a bow, a wreath of flowers.

Snail

You will need: paper, glue, brush, paint.

The technique for preparing the mass for crafts is identical to that used for making sheep. Their soaked paper and glue, a "long sausage" is formed and rolled up. You can make a head from the same composition by forming a ball and gluing it to the body. All parts must be connected only after they have completely dried. In the future, the surface of the snail is primed with white paint and left to dry for a while. It remains only to decorate the body, head and draw a spiral, eyes, mouth. The final step is to coat the finished craft with varnish.

Such crafts can be used for the garden. Children will be happy to participate in the process and continue to be proud of the masterpieces they have created with their own hands.

How to make a papier-mâché snowman

Making a snowman is not difficult and very interesting.

For the manufacture you will need the following materials:

  1. Wet wipes;
  2. Cotton wool;
  3. Roll of toilet paper;
  4. White threads;
  5. Foil;
  6. Newspaper;
  7. Water container;
  8. Tassel.

Papier-mache snowman (video)

Moist newspaper is formed into balls of the desired size. All blanks are wrapped in foil, and the body of a snowman is formed. Then it is wrapped with cotton wool and fixed with threads. Hands are formed from cotton wool, which is folded into a tube. It is easier to do this by wrapping cotton wool around a pencil or knitting needle. Fix the hands so that they do not fall apart with glue. Attached to the body with adhesive. To create a headdress, you will need a capsule from Kinder Surprise. A mixture of soaked toilet paper and glue is applied to half of the capsule. After drying, it is separated from the plastic core and covered with paints. The body of the snowman is primed with white gouache.

When the snowman dries, you need to draw the head, nose, mouth of the button. Glitter hairspray will help add brightness to the image.

Papier-mâché: crafts for kindergarten

Very interesting crafts can be done for kindergarten. Let's consider some of them in more detail.

Christmas tree decoration

We need: a Christmas tree toy, a newspaper, a sheet of white paper, PVA, water, a white acrylic primer, foam rubber, a napkin with a beautiful New Year's pattern to decorate a future toy, paints, braid, double-sided tape.

An old Christmas tree toy in the form of a ball is pasted over with a damp newspaper without glue. The next layer is already fixed with glue. There should be at least 5 layers. Moreover, layers should be alternated - one from the newspaper, the second from white paper. Each layer must be thoroughly dried.

After drying, the paper ball is cut into two halves. When the ball is removed, the paper parts are glued along the seam.

Double-sided tape and ribbon are glued so that the toy can be hung on the Christmas tree. The next stage is decorating crafts with your own hands. First of all, the ball is covered with a white primer using a foam sponge. It is left until completely dry (approximately 40-50 minutes in time). Then the part of the napkin on which the drawing is depicted is taken. It is cut out and attached to the toy with PVA glue. Glue is also applied over the drawing. The final step is applying the final coat of paint and coating the toy with glitter nail polish.

Kolobok

The base of the bun is a balloon. Large balloons can also be used. It should be pasted over with toilet paper dipped in water. The principle of applying layers is identical to that described above. After drying, you need to make a small incision, pierce the balloon and remove it. The resulting hole is sealed with a small piece of paper. The legs of the kolobok are cut out of the foam rubber sponge. The surface of the resulting paper ball is covered with yellow gouache. Paper hair is glued to the top of the head. Colored paper will also be needed in order to make the eyes and mouth of the kolobok. They are glued on. Legs can be glued with double-sided tape.

Volumetric papier-mâché crafts from the mass

Do-it-yourself modeling of volumetric crafts is carried out from the prepared mass. To do this, either toilet paper or newspaper is soaked in warm water. Paper swells in water for half an hour. Then it is squeezed through a sieve or gauze and laid out in a container. You can add any glue to the composition - PVA or a do-it-yourself paste. The mass must be homogeneous. To do this, it is mixed with a mixer. Subsequently, you can form any craft from this mass - a ball, a heart, a pattern. Sculpting is also not difficult, as well as from plasticine. The decor is done with paints, preferably with gouache.

So that in the future it does not remain on the hands, the craft is processed with a special varnish. You can add anything to the decor - beads, sequins, beads.

Papier-mâché products master class: watermelon

Making papier-mache watermelon with your own hands is quite simple. Materials: toilet paper, methyl and PVA glue, film, self-adhesive gouache, acrylic varnish.

A mixture is prepared from paper or newspaper, water and glue. It is better to add both methyl glue and PVA to the mixture. The basis of a watermelon is a balloon or a ball. The base is pre-wrapped with tape or cling film. This will ensure trouble-free extraction of the ball or ball in the future. The adhesive mass of paper is applied in a thin layer on the base (5 mm). It should be carefully smoothed and dried. Since the ball is round, you must first apply the adhesive on one half, dry it, then on the second, leaving a 6 mm border between them. When the glue dries, both halves are removed from the ball or balloon. Between themselves, they are glued with methyl glue and dried thoroughly.

To make a watermelon tail, you will need a wire that is inserted into the craft. A layer of adhesive is also applied to it.

A triangle (a piece of watermelon) is cut out with a knife, the size of a fist. With the help of an adhesive, an internal border is made at the incision site. In the future, this groove can be inserted into the watermelon or removed.

The craft is painted green, using a darker shade, circular lines are drawn. A piece of watermelon on the inside is painted red, bones are drawn with a marker. The border of the cut piece is also painted red. A prerequisite is to cover the entire product with acrylic varnish.
