Simple baubles made from ribbons. Ribbon bauble: a guide for beginners

What can be made from ribbons

How many things do you know that can be made from ribbons? Bracelets, necklaces, hair ornaments... And this is not the whole list. Many needlewomen and needlewomen manage to embroider pictures with satin ribbons, weave them into rugs, covers and much more. In order to learn these various handicraft techniques yourself, you just need to have the desire, materials and perseverance, then you will definitely succeed. After all, weaving with ribbons - a very interesting, useful and exciting hobby for people of all ages.

Where to begin

Today you can find a lot of information and lessons related to any needlework, so learning what you like so much has become much easier than, say, 15-20 years ago.

We can now only rejoice at the progress. But let’s not move away from the topic, but consider what weaving from ribbons can be. It can be both complex and simple, understandable even to a beginner. For beginners, it will be easier to learn how to weave so-called baubles than to immediately start making carpets.

Weaving baubles from ribbon

Baubles are not weaving ribbons themselves, as some people believe, but a bracelet decoration. In general, such a bracelet can be woven not only from ribbons, but also from threads, scraps, leather and other materials. So, let's get down to one of the simple techniques for weaving baubles. Take two tapes about five to six millimeters wide and one meter long. Secure them together with a needle or pin. Wrap one ribbon over the other so that a loop is formed through which you need to thread another ribbon and tighten it with a knot. Next, repeat this with another lace, that is, wrap it around another and thread it into a loop, tighten it. You can weave until the ribbon runs out, or you can “adjust” the product to the girth of your hand. You can attach clasps to one and the other side of the bracelet that will fasten on your hand, or simply leave the ties.

This is the simplest weaving of baubles from ribbons. But you can also weave flowers from ribbons, which are called kanzashi. Kanzashi is an ancient decoration of Japanese geishas.

Kanzashi weaving

Weaving kanzashi flower ribbons may seem difficult at first glance, but it is not so. The very principle of weaving is the correct bending of a satin ribbon to form the petals of a flower, for example, a rose. Take a tape 4-5 centimeters wide and about one and a half meters long. Roll one edge into a tube so that it looks like the middle of a flower. Bend the free edge in half: this will be a petal that needs to be beautifully attached to the middle. You can glue it with Moment glue or simply sew it with thread.

Where to use kanzashi

This weaving of ribbons can be useful in making brooches or hair clips. It is enough to simply glue an ordinary crocodile clip, automatic clip or hairpin to the base of the flower, and you will already have a wonderful decoration ready, which is also made by yourself. And in order to use such a rose as a brooch, you just need to pin the base with a pin, which you will later attach to clothes.

A stylish bracelet made of satin ribbons will become a fashion accessory.

Satin ribbon baubles are less common than more traditional bracelets made from thread or beads, but they have plenty of benefits. Even beginners can make such jewelry of high quality and stylish, and their production will take much less time than weaving with thin threads or painstaking work with beads. In addition, both adults and children can weave baubles from satin ribbons.You can wear this accessory not only on your wrist, but also as a keychain, for example, on bags. And you will learn from this material how to weave baubles from ribbons in several different ways.

A simple bauble made of two ribbons for beginners

To weave such a bracelet you will need 2 ribbons of different colors. You can choose any colors to your taste, but they must be harmoniously combined with each other. One of the most versatile options is yellow, which can be combined with red, blue, and green shades.

Great example of color combination

Having prepared 2 segments, each about 1 meter long, we begin weaving:

1) Bend the end of the first ribbon, wrap the second one around the loop and tie a knot. The first section forms a sliding loop that can be tightened and stretched.

We begin the weaving process

2) Fold the second ribbon into the loop and thread it through the first loop, tighten the last one.

3) After this, we again fold the loop from the ribbon of the first color and thread it into the second, tighten it.

Weaving a three-color bracelet from ribbons

Weaving baubles from three ribbons is similar in technique to weaving from two parts, but the appearance of the bracelet is different. The accessory will be more interesting in color combinations, and the pattern on the front side and the back will be different.

Weaving of three ribbons

Let's look in more detail at how to weave baubles from 3 ribbons:

1) We fix the tapes to the surface in any convenient way (for example, tape or a pin).

2) We put 1 piece to the right, 2 to the left and then weave these two ribbons together.

3) Fold a loop from the first ribbon and wrap it with the other two, tie it.

4) We fold a loop from a pair of segments, thread it through the loop of the first tape and tighten it.

How to weave a square bauble from ribbons

The square shape of the plait is an interesting feature of the 4-ribbon bauble, which looks very stylish and unusual. However, you can also wear it twisted, in which case the bracelet takes the shape of a voluminous spiral.

A voluminous bauble will look great on your hand

When twisting, it is important that the bauble does not stretch out or become deformed, otherwise it may lose its attractive appearance.To work, you will need 4 pieces of tape 2 meters long or a little more.

For work we need tapes

You can take pieces twice as long, then you will need two of them. Let's look at the weaving of this bauble from 4 ribbons in more detail:

1. Work should begin with securing the future bracelet. We tie all the ribbons with a knot, leaving 15 centimeters at the ends for tying.

2. Lay out the ribbons so that they are located on 4 sides - up, down, right, left. There is no need to disassemble the front and back sides of the ribbons during weaving.

3. We lower the first segment from top to bottom so that a loop is formed.

4. Move the second ribbon on the right to the left, overlapping it with the first.

5. We bend the third tape from bottom to top and overlap the previous one.

We braid the bracelet to the desired length and fasten it to the wrist

6. We transfer the last segment from left to right and draw it into the loop of the first ribbon.

7. Tighten the weaving and straighten the ribbons. It turns out to be an even square.

8. Weave to the desired length, repeating points 3 – 7.

So, our voluminous bracelet is ready

The voluminous bracelet is ready! It must be remembered that square baubles can stretch if handled carelessly. They can be strengthened by pulling a stiff thread or fishing line into the middle.

How to weave a round bauble from ribbons

Unlike previous bracelets, the dense round braid is resistant to stretching and does not lose its shape for a long time. It uses a Chinese knot called "lotus" which can be pulled quite tight.

A hand-woven round ribbon bauble will make an excellent gift.

You will need 2 ribbons 2.5 meters long or four shorter ones (about 1.5 m). Let's look at how to make a bauble from round ribbons, step by step:

1) If you have 2 ribbons, you need to fold them crosswise and secure with a pin, if you have 4, tie a knot 10 cm from the edge and also secure with a pin.

5) We work again with the second ribbon. We bend the end that lies on top to the left and pass it above and below the first ribbon.

We work on the second ribbon, pass it over the first

6) Tighten the knot, straightening the elements of the square.

Ribbon Weaving Tips for Beginners

Understanding how to weave ribbon baubles for beginners is quite simple.

Having mastered weaving, you can create original bracelets

Under the guidance of adults, a child can quickly master this handicraft. However, there are several subtleties that can prevent mistakes and quickly increase your skill level:

  • · You should always carefully monitor the tightening of knots and loops. Of course, at the very beginning of mastering a technique, you rarely get an ideal result. Still, it will be useful to master the principle as quickly as possible. To do this, the ends of the ribbons at different stages of work must be the same length.

Tips for beginners: take ribbons of the same length
  • It is also recommended not to overtighten the knots and monitor symmetry.
  • · Beginners will find it helpful to secure the ribbons with pins as they work, and to tie the ends with a knot when starting to weave.

  • This will prevent unnecessary movement of the ribbons and unraveling of loops. Weaving bracelets suspended without fastening is also possible, but this requires experience and skill.
  • · Color combinations play a big role in how the finished product will look.

Weaving baubles does not require much experience, the main thing is to learn how to combine colors
  • Therefore, it is useful for everyone who wants to master the hobby at a high level to learn how to combine shades with each other correctly. Additionally, in some subcultures, the colors of woven bracelets have their own meaning and may be included in jewelry for a specific purpose. These color codes are also recommended to be studied and kept in mind.

Baubles - decoration that came to us from antiquity

Weaving baubles is a fascinating activity that is suitable even for those who have very little experience in needlework, the main thing is to have the desire and a little free time.

Weaving baubles is a great hobby that even a beginner can master.

Native Americans are considered the first to use wicker jewelry. In more recent times, the Indians were followed by hippies who became interested in how to weave a bauble from ribbons for their own purposes. If the Indians, using weaving from ribbons and various threads, created a kippa - a special, still undeciphered writing, then hippies used the bauble both as wedding rings and as insignia.

Using multi-colored ribbons, representatives of this movement indicated age, orientation (sexual) and participation in a particular group. However, this does not mean that everyone who wears a bauble is a hippie.

Nowadays, fashionable baubles play the role of a simple decoration that is easy to make with your own hands in order to give to a friend or loved one. You don’t need any special skills to weave baubles; you need perseverance, attention and materials: pins and satin ribbons.

Baubles for beginners

For this bauble you need two satin ribbons from half a meter to a meter long and about 4 centimeters wide. You can use ribbons of different colors or the same color. But to make it easier to master this matter, it is better to take multi-colored ribbons for now, for example, a yellow ribbon and a green one.

The first step with the green ribbon is to fold its tip into a loop;

Holding the loop in this position with your hand, take the yellow ribbon with your other hand and also roll it into a similar loop;

We pass the yellow loop into the green ribbon loop and, after that, tighten the green one;

Now we make two loops, but on the contrary, we thread the green one into the yellow one, which we then tighten;

Representatives of some subcultures, including hippies, were confident that in a bauble, each combination of colors has its own specific meaning. So think carefully when choosing satin ribbons. Better yet, check the meaning of different ribbon colors by searching for information on hippie resources. This will allow you to avoid stupid situations when a girl tries to weave a bracelet and give it to her lover, but it turns out that such colors of the bracelet indicate the non-traditional sexual orientation of the wearer of the bracelet, and the guy will not even suspect it.

In order for the knots to be symmetrically located, neatly looking and identical in appearance, they need to be made slightly loose. That is, when you weave and tighten the knots, do not overdo it. This way you will achieve beauty, the woven bracelet will be attractive.

If you get a bad bracelet and it seems unattractive to you, there is no need to be upset. The bracelet can be unraveled and re-woven.

You will significantly save your nerves at first if you secure the loops with pins, then they will not fall apart and the ends of the ribbons will not slip out. And if you gain experience, then everything will work out smoothly.

Once the bracelet is woven and there are ribbons left, they can be left hanging or tied into a knot.

Round ribbon baubles

In this section we will tell you how to weave a bauble from round ribbons. Typically, “Chinese knots” (“lotus”) are used for this. It should be noted that weaving such a bracelet will take you at least an hour, and in order for your product to retain its original shape during the process, it needs to be tied more tightly.

You will need a pair of ribbons two and a half meters long, which are laid crosswise and the intersection is fixed with a pin (you can use 4 ribbons 1.2 meters long, which are folded together, tied with a knot 10 centimeters from the edge and secured with a pin at the knots).

Let's say we took a silver and black ribbon and laid it crossed, the black one vertically. First step, place the upper end of the black ribbon on the left side of the silver ribbon (which lies horizontally);

  • Now bring the left end of the silver ribbon to the right, behind both parts of the black ribbon pointing downwards;
  • The next step is to direct the right side of the black ribbon upward, above the silver one;
  • Next, you need to turn the upper part of the silver ribbon back and place it under the black ribbon, its upper half;

  • Now tighten the resulting knot, sometimes, to tighten it tightly, you need to straighten the ribbons;
  • We repeat the steps, gradually forming a cord;

At the end, you need to pull half of the ties under the ribbon from the back of the cord. In this case, the bracelet will be much more convenient to wear.

Bauble spiral

Prepare two satin meter ribbons (for example, silver and black). A spiral bauble is woven as follows:

Bend 10–15 centimeters from the end of each tape and place the ends on the rest of the tape;

Place one strip on top of the other, not perpendicular, but at an angle of slightly less than 90 degrees;

Fold the black ribbon under the silver one, as if for a knot;

Continue wrapping the black ribbon around the silver one, with the tip of the black ribbon sticking out;

Now pass the large loop of silver ribbon through the small loop of black;

Now make a new black loop and pass it through the remaining silver loop;

At this stage, we hold one loop and carefully pull the end of the second loop. You should not tighten it too much, as this will ruin the beauty of the bracelet;

So, you have a square in front of you. By slowly tightening the loops, you can adjust the shape of the edges. Try to achieve an even shape for the edges of the square;

Now be patient and repeat these steps again until you have weaved a bauble of the required length.

Thus, you can see for yourself from the instructions given in the article on how to weave a bauble from ribbons that it is not at all difficult. Of course, this is painstaking work, but the reward will be a beautiful thing that you made with your own hands and which will be especially dear to the person to whom you give the bauble.

Both adults and children will not find it difficult to weave baubles from ribbons. Materials for creating bracelets can be beads and seed beads, threads and leather, as well as satin ribbons. And if it is more difficult to work with beads or floss threads (this is quite painstaking work), then weaving baubles from satin ribbons will not cause any difficulties in the work.

Experienced needlewomen can handle one bauble in just a few minutes! Fast, high-quality and very beautiful - these are the main advantages of weaving baubles from ribbons.

Those who are just trying their hand at weaving should start making baubles from ribbons. A little patience and perseverance, and the result will not take long to arrive.

If we talk about the ancestors of the art of weaving baubles, it would be fair to remember the American Indians. Centuries later, hippies introduced this decorative item into their subculture. Today the fashion for such things is returning. Such cute things, given to a dear person, are very much appreciated. Previously, a bauble was considered an attribute of a certain culture, today it is just a friendly gift that can show off on everyone’s hand. In some cases, girlfriends deliberately wear identical baubles on their wrists, thereby indicating that they are best friends.

Young fashionistas hang baubles on their bags and use them as keychains.

So, how to make baubles from ribbons? There are at least two simple ways.

Baubles made of two ribbons

To work on the future bracelet, you need satin ribbons of two colors. Remember the principles of color combinations. Today on the Internet you can easily find special tables that help you learn how to combine colors harmoniously. But for the first time you can take two colors, one of which is yellow. Colors such as red, blue and green go well with it.

Using an example, let's see how to weave a bauble from green and orange ribbons. Approximately each tape should be a meter long.

First we bend the edge of one ribbon (green). We wrap it with another ribbon (orange), and then tie a knot. Thus, from the green tape we will get a living loop - if you pull its long end, then the loop can be tightened.

Now the loose ribbon (orange) needs to be folded into a loop, and then threaded into the finished loop made earlier from the green ribbon.

After this, the green loop needs to be tightened a little.

We will see that the orange loop has already become large. Next, we fold the green ribbon into the loop and thread it through the orange one. Tighten the orange loop. The process is repeated, we perform these actions in turn.

As soon as we reach the desired length of the bracelet, we tie the ribbons together in a knot.

Fenechka is ready! It can be worn on your hand or attached to your backpack.

Square bauble made of four ribbons

In this version of weaving baubles from ribbons, the consumption of ribbons is already greater.

We will need 4 tapes (their width is 5-7 mm). Length - 2 meters or more. You can take 2 long ribbons and start weaving from the middle with four ends.

Let's start weaving a square bauble. Leave 15 cm of each ribbon for ties and tie the ribbons into one knot.

Don’t think about where the front side of the ribbon is and where the back side is: in this bauble they will be visible equally.

We straighten the ribbons up, down, left and right. And then we weave in the following sequence:

  1. Bend one ribbon (pink) from top to bottom, leaving a loop.
  2. Now we cover it with a second tape, bending it from right to left (brown tape).
  3. Overlapping the brown ribbon, bend the beige ribbon from bottom to top.
  4. Next, bend the orange ribbon from left to right and insert it into the pink ribbon loop.
  5. We carefully pull together all the ribbons and form an even square. We straighten all the ribbons.

There is no need to tighten the ribbons too much, otherwise the bauble will be uneven.

Repeat all five steps until the ribbon reaches the desired length. You will see that the bauble is quite voluminous.

Many people like this bauble because it can be worn not only in its original form, i.e. square, but also as a twisted spiral. To do this, just twist the finished bauble slightly, but very carefully to prevent deformation of the product.

You need to handle such a square bauble with care. If stretched too much, the ribbons may twist, in which case the bauble will no longer return to its original form, but will look like this:

Many craftsmen insert a strong thread into the bauble at the beginning of their work - this way the bracelet does not stretch and remains in good condition for a long time.

The keychain is woven in the same way, watch the video master class:

Round bauble made of ribbons

You can also weave round baubles from ribbons. This round bracelet is woven from Chinese lotus knots. The work will take about an hour. Tighten the knots very tightly, then the cord (the bauble itself) will be rigid and will not lose its shape for a long time.

So, we need two ribbons 2 or 2.5 m long or 4 ribbons 1.5 m long. In the first case, satin ribbons are placed crosswise and secured with a pin.

In the case of weaving a bauble from four ribbons, they need to be folded together, tied with a knot, having previously retreated 10 cm for the ties. The knot is also secured with a pin.

After this, we pull the ribbons into a knot and straighten them.

Then you need to tighten the knot tighter:

  1. One ribbon (light) lies straight, the second (dark) lies on top of the light ribbon in the shape of an arch.
  2. Now we turn the light ribbon to the right so that it lies on top of the dark ribbon, also forming an arch. In this case, the two arches are perpendicular to each other.
  3. Next, the dark ribbon should be lifted up so that it lies on top of the light ribbon, forming an inverted arch.
  4. The light ribbon, in turn, bends to the left and passes not only over the brown ribbon, but also under it (look carefully at the photo!)

We repeat the above sequence of actions until the cord reaches the desired length.

That is, the basis for weaving a round bauble is a four-stage intersection of arches made of ribbons. They are then converted into one square, which is then pulled together tightly. It turns out to be a beautiful elegant cord.

It can be used not only as a bracelet, but also as another decorative element. It can decorate children's things, be a key ring, you can use it to make a beautiful headband or handles for a child's handbag - why not? If you weave a round bauble tightly enough, there will be no doubt about the strength of such a product.

Now you know how to make baubles from ribbons. But these are not all weaving options. Experiment!
