A skirt is one of the oldest items of women's (and in some countries, men's) wardrobe, the basis of which is a rectangular piece of fabric fastened at the waist. Simple skirt models require minimal effort and time in order to turn a piece of fabric lying around in the closet into a stylish new thing.

Tutu - dancer's skirt

The word tutu, which is unusual for our ears in English, refers to a ballet tutu, as well as fluffy tulle skirts that have become very popular. You don't need a sewing machine to make this outfit. All you need to create a spectacular skirt for a children's party, dance class, photo shoot, and, if desired, for a ballroom or even a wedding dress is about an hour and a half of time, a sufficient amount of tulle cut into strips, an elastic band for a belt (2-3 cm wide ) and decorations.

It is best to use narrow tulle in strips 15 cm wide. If it is unavailable, cut fabric of regular width into strips. The most convenient way to do this is using a cardboard template. The length of such a template should be equal to the length of the skirt plus 1 cm.
Creating a skirt begins with a belt. Pulling lightly, determine the desired waist size, add 4 cm and sew (Fig. 1).

After this, using a template, cut strips of tulle, the length of which will be equal to twice the length of the skirt plus 2 cm. For a decorative effect, their ends can be cut off with a corner.

Then a ring made of elastic is put on the back of the chair and strips of tulle are attached to it (Fig. 3). To do this, fold the strip in half and pass both ends through the resulting loop. All knots must be made the same, without tightening the elastic in any way, otherwise the skirt will slide down.

For greater beauty, several colors are alternated in the skirt. Approximately 70 strips are needed for a waist size of 60 cm. The finished skirt is decorated with ribbons, artificial flowers and other decor (Fig. 4)

Romantic "Tatyanka"

The Tatyanka skirt is well suited for thin women with narrow hips. This model does not require the creation of patterns and fitting to the figure; it can be sewn, knowing how to perform only a straight stitch.

For “tatyanka” you will need a wide elastic band and dress fabric (not too thick). First, measure your waist using a thick elastic band, stretching it slightly. Add two centimeters to the measured length and cut it off.

The ends of the elastic are sewn together, the resulting ring is stretched as much as possible and the resulting length is measured - this will be half the width of the finished skirt (in ordinary patterns, the width of the “tatyanka” is equal to one and a half times the volume of the hips). The fabric is folded in half along the measured width (Fig. 5).

Then the sewn belt is fixed at the waist line and the desired length of the skirt is measured. Add hem allowances and attach the waistband, and cut out a rectangle of the desired size.

The cut out rectangle is folded in half with the right sides inward, the side seam is pinned and stitched.

Next, the bottom is tucked and processed, after which they begin the most difficult operation - attaching the belt. To do this, mark 4 main points on the skirt and elastic band with pins - 2 side lines, the middle of the back and front, and then combine them.

Pull the belt evenly, pin the skirt and belt at intermediate points, and then sew them together, stretching the elastic as much as possible. It is best to do this with a zigzag stitch.

For children's and beachwear, you can simply stitch the folded top of the skirt and thread the elastic into the resulting tunnel.

Pleated skirt

Bell skirts

Flared skirts suit any figure. They look simple and elegant, are often constructed directly onto the fabric, have minimal seams and require only two measurements - waist and length. The design of such skirts is based on a circle (sun), with a central hole for the waist. This circle, in turn, is cut out from a square, which, with a large length, requires a lot of fabric consumption. More economical are skirts that are sewn from part of a circle, for example, a quarter-sun skirt. It is based on a square folded twice diagonally (Fig. 9)

The top section of the skirt corresponds to the waist line. Its length should correspond to the waist size, so the radius of the upper circle is determined as twice the waist size divided by three. For example, with a waist size of 60 cm, this radius will be 60 * 2/3 = 40 cm. To this value you need to add the length of the skirt, for example, with a desired length of 110 cm, you will need fabric with a width of more than 150 cm and the same length.

On a folded piece of fabric, mark the boundaries of two partial circles with chalk. This is conveniently done using a ribbon secured with a pin in the upper left corner of the fabric. The radius of the first part of the circle corresponds to the waist volume, as calculated above, the radius of the second is equal to this value plus the length, add seam allowances.

Since the fabric can stretch when cutting, it is recommended to take the length of the upper radius a little less and adjust the size when sewing and trying on. This skirt has a small extension downwards, so you need to control the length of the arc corresponding to the volume of the hips; its radius will be 20 cm greater than the radius of the upper cut. If the hips are wide, you need to lower the line of the top cut by 1-2 cm, and when sewing, adjust it. The skirt is connected along the back seam, into which a zipper is sewn, and a belt is sewn on top, the length of which is 4 cm greater than the waist circumference.

The half-sun skirt is easy to cut and sew, it suits any figure and looks simple and elegant. Its basis is half a circle (Fig. 12), and the radius of the upper semicircle is calculated as the waist volume divided by 3, that is, with a waist of 60 cm, the radius of the upper semicircle is 20 cm. To determine the radius of the lower semicircle, the length of the skirt is added to this number. That is, for a skirt 110 cm long, you will need a rectangular piece of fabric, the width of which is more than 130 cm and the length is more than 260 cm.

You need to cut such a skirt on a piece of fabric folded in half using half of the pattern or by marking directly on the fabric.

The flowing circle skirt is very impressive, it is suitable for slender women. It is cut on the basis of a full circle. The radius of the inner circle is calculated as the waist volume divided by 6 (10 cm for a waist of 60 cm); for the radius of the outer circle, the length of the skirt is added to this value.

A short skirt can be cut from a square of fabric without side seams; in this case, its top is placed on an elastic band. Long skirts are cut from two semicircles; in this case, the fabric consumption can be determined only by placing the pattern on it as tightly as possible.

For those with a thin waist, sewing can be simplified by tying the top with an elastic band (as in a Tatyanka skirt). However, in this case, for the radius of the upper part, it is necessary to take into account not the waist volume, but the hip volume, which, accordingly, will increase fabric consumption.

If you decide that you will sew a full maxi skirt, then the most important thing is to choose the right fabric: it should be dense, only in this case the pleated skirt will be voluminous. Dense, heavy satin is best suited for circle skirts and voluminous maxi skirts; more expensive material is Mikado fabric (silk).

How to understand how much fabric you will need for a skirt: on average, a voluminous skirt with pleats will need from 2 to 3 meters of fabric if your clothing size is from 42 to 46.

You will also need a secret lock, threads to match the fabric, and sewing tools, of course.

We sew a fluffy and voluminous maxi skirt using pictures

To begin, take your measurements:

  • measure your waist circumference;
  • step back 5 cm from the waist and also measure the girth (by the bones);
  • measure the length from the waist to the hem of the future skirt.

Step 1:

Cut two rectangular pieces of fabric (back and front). The length of the piece is the length of your skirt + seam allowances. Cut semicircles on both sides of both pieces - future pockets. They should be directed slightly downward, the size of a hand should fit there. As a rule, pockets are made at a distance of 20 cm below the waist line.

Step 2

Mark the center of the piece along the width to lay out the pleats. There will be a total of 4 pleats on each side of the skirt. First lay two folds in one direction, and then two in the other - they should be uniform and slightly sloping, and not parallel to each other. Pay attention to the width of the waistband and hip line so that the underwire skirt fits neatly and does not puff up.

Then place the same folds on the second back part of the skirt.

Step 3

Sew the folds as close to the edge as possible to ensure a neat seam. It is better to use a slow speed on your sewing machine for this.

Step 4

Fold both parts of the skirt right sides inward and sew along the edges (along with the pockets). Do not sew a seam over one of the pockets - a secret lock will be inserted there.

Step 5

Try on your skirt to make sure it fits you. And only then sew a zipper into the cut.

Step 6

Cut out a strip from the main fabric with a length equal to the waist circumference + allowances, about 10-15 cm wide. Place it right side to the front side of the skirt and sew from one edge of the zipper to the other. After this, fold this belt along the seam inward and iron it. Sew the edges around the zipper. On the reverse side, this piece of fabric can be left simply free, or fixed at the tucks of the folds, but only so that it is not visible from the outside.

Step 7

Fold the hem of your maxi skirt, press it, and machine stitch it.

That's all, you've done well - you sewed a fluffy maxi skirt with your own hands. Of course, this is a simple and not the most flawless option, but it will be ideal if you urgently need a holiday skirt.

Fluffy maxi skirts are now in trend - they can be worn not only for a social event or holiday. Perfect for summer walks or going to work.

The floor-length skirt still remains a relevant attribute of a woman's wardrobe. You can sew a skirt that is ideal for your figure with your own hands.

In order for the skirt to optimally suit you in size and length, you need to take measurements before starting work.

To sew a full-length skirt yourself for standard body parameters, you will need three dimensions:

  • waist circumference (From),
  • hip circumference (about),
  • skirt length (Du).

It is important to remember: the width and volume measurements are taken in full, and half the value is recorded. For example: From is equal to 70 cm. We write St 35 cm (C is half waist circumference). We take length measurements and write them down in full size.

If your figure has a protruding stomach, buttocks or steep hips, then you need to take additional measurements.

  • Dusp - length of the skirt in front;
  • Dusz - length of the skirt at the back;
  • Dusb - side length of the skirt.

The measuring tape should smoothly go around all protruding parts of the body. When taking measurements, we take into account the allowance for a loose fit.

For St - 0.5-1.5 cm. For Sat - 0.5-3 cm or more. The lower the indicator, the tighter the product will fit.

How to cut a floor-length skirt?

Having taken the necessary measurements, we proceed to the main stage - cutting out the straight skirt.

  1. Add 50 cm to the hip volume - this will be the width of the fabric cut.
  2. We calculate the length of the cut as the sum of the desired length of the finished skirt and another 15 cm. Additional centimeters are needed to process the edges of the product.
  3. For the future waistband of the skirt with an elastic band, we separately cut a rectangular strip of fabric. The length of the strip is About + 5 cm, the width is double the width of the elastic band + 2 cm for finishing the edges.

After cutting out the elasticated skirt, we proceed to sewing the parts together.

  1. We sew a strip for the belt and get a ring. Fold the wrong side inward and insert the elastic.
  2. We sew the fabric piece along the edge: we get a pipe. We sew a line along the upper edge with a stitch width of 4-5 mm, then tighten it. The size of the resulting top: About + 5 cm.
  3. We sew the belt to the skirt, stretching it slightly.
  4. The bottom of the product is processed depending on the fabric.
  5. The upper cut can not be pulled together, but decorated with folds. Then the model will look different.

How to make a skirt with a ruffled belt?

  1. To create a maxi skirt with a ruffled belt, we take the necessary measurements in a similar way, determine the desired length of the finished product and the width of the fabric cut.
  2. We sew the resulting piece of fabric. We process the upper cut of the resulting “pipe”.
  3. Sew off the waistband with elastic thread. The space between the lines is 1 cm, the height of the belt is optional.

Pattern of a floor-length skirt

For some, a detailed step-by-step description of the process of cutting and sewing a product is more understandable. More experienced needlewomen cannot sew a skirt without a clear pattern. Just for them, below are several pattern diagrams.

Skirt-year

A warm year-old skirt made of thick fabric can be an excellent option for autumn. The number of wedges for such a model can vary from 4 to 12. The pattern for a floor-length godet skirt is based on the pattern for a straight floor-length skirt.

  1. We place approximately 10-30 cm down from the hip line along the central and side lines of both parts. This distance will depend on how long the wedges you want on the skirt.
  2. The resulting three points on each part will be the centers of circles for constructing wedges.
  3. We draw parts of circles with sides 7-14 cm.
  4. For a godet skirt, 8 such patterns should be made.

It is important to know: if the fabric is smooth and plain, then the pattern wedges are laid out in the opposite direction. If there is a pattern or pile, then the layout is done in one direction.

Skirt sun or half sun

  1. To construct a pattern, draw a semicircle, the radius of which will be equal to 1/6 of the waist circumference.
  2. From the resulting semicircle we set aside another one, the radius of which is equal to the length of the skirt.
  3. Transfer the pattern to the fabric.
  4. We process the bottom of the future skirt.
  5. We cut out a belt 8 cm wide and a length equal to the radius of the inner semicircle plus 5 cm.
  6. Sew the belt to the skirt.
  7. In a similar way, you can sew a shorter skirt - a half-sun. The difference between the pattern of such a model is that the drawing will be equal to half the pattern of the sun skirt.

How to wear a floor-length skirt?

It all depends on the material of the product and the figure of the owner. Shoes - sandals or open heels.

For an airy, fluffy skirt, a tight-fitting top is desirable.

If the bottom is straight, then the top should be voluminous.

The current look today would be a short denim jacket and a light floor-length skirt made of chiffon or thin silk.

Summer is in full swing! The period of vacations and travel. Right now I want to treat myself to a beautiful new thing. So why deny yourself? Our tutorial will help you sew a simple summer skirt. Simple, but very effective and stylish. We have chosen three models of skirts for you: Floor-length skirt, tiered skirt and wrap skirt. We hope you will like them. So, let's begin.

Floor skirt

The first model is a chic, light, floor-length chiffon skirt. If the fabric is sheer, you can add a lining. Of course, it is best to use natural fabrics (chiffon, veil, voile, cambric).
There are two ways to sew such a skirt. The first one is based on a rectangle. Suitable for thin fabrics and those who are not afraid to add volume to the waist. Everything is simple here, even a beginner can handle it. Two rectangular pieces of fabric equal to the length of the skirt (we have 100 cm), width - the width of the fabric, sew along the side seams, gather the top cut to a length equal to the girth of the hips + 4 cm. Sew the belt (ironed in the middle, lengthwise, and worked into a ring , strip of fabric). Insert an elastic band into the belt, like a drawstring, the width of the elastic is equal to the width of the belt. Finish the bottom of the skirt with a hem seam.

The second method is somewhat more complicated (a half-sun skirt with a gather at the waist), but it creates a very beautiful effect - the skirt turns out to be flowy, much wider at the bottom and less gathered at the waist. You will need a lot more fabric, but the result is worth it!
We cut the fabric into a spread. In our case, the width of the fabric is 140 cm. The length of the skirt is 100 cm. We set the length of the skirt from the upper right corner of the fabric along the transverse thread of the fabric. The remaining 40 cm is the radius of the circle - the waist line. Further, the entire construction is clearly shown in the diagram and will not be difficult.
The main difficulty that will arise when sewing a skirt is adjusting its length. To ensure that the skirt does not stretch out during wear, the skirt, which has already been finished along the side seams and the top edge, needs to be hung out for a day. That is, attach it to clothes hangers in a hanging position and leave it hanging. After this, trim the bottom line, focusing on the distance to the floor, putting it on a figure or mannequin. Hem the hem with a seam.
We suggest making a skirt consisting not of two quarters of a circle, but of three or four! Of course, this depends on the properties of the fabric and its thickness. The skirt will turn out gorgeous!

The skirt lining is cut as one of the segments of the main skirt, i.e. a quarter circle. The length of the waist line on the lining should be no less than the circumference of the hips + 4 cm. First, we calculate the length of the skirt, taking into account its width along the upper section. Let’s substitute the known values into the formula (2*P *X)/4 = Hip circumference + 4 cm. And having solved the equation with one unknown - X (radius of the circle), we obtain the expected length of the lining skirt.
(2*3.14*X)/4=92+4
6.28X/4=96
X=61 cm - radius. With a fabric width of 140 cm, the length of the lining is 140-61 = 79 cm minus the increase for processing seams. Construction of the lining on the diagram.

The length of the waistline on the skirt must be gathered to the size of the lining. Baste the skirt and skirt lining together, connecting the top edges. Next, apply a stitched belt with an elastic band, as in the previous case.

Tiered skirt

In order to sew a tiered skirt, we will need a pattern for the base of a straight skirt.

Based on a pattern We outline the length of the upper part of the skirt (yoke) - 30 cm. Cut off the excess. The darts can be left, or they can be moved down by cutting from the bottom of the yoke to the top of the dart and opening the dart to the bottom. (You can also move the entire dart on the front panel to the bottom, and only part of the dart on the back, leaving ½ at the waist).

Next, measure the length of the lower cut of the yoke and multiply it by 2. Because. Our pattern is in half size.
Cut out the next two tiers in the form of rectangles with a width equal to the length of the tier. The first rectangle is equal to the width of the fabric. Or, if you want to make the skirt fuller and the properties of the fabric allow it, calculate the length as shown in the figure.
The second rectangle (last tier) is two or one and a half times the width of the fabric. Or according to the diagram.

The first tier, its upper cut, should be assembled to the length of the lower cut of the yoke. Connect.
Gather the second tier along the upper cut to the length of the lower cut of the first tier, connect together.
Finish the upper section of the skirt with a stitched belt with a length equal to the waist circumference. Side seam closure with a zipper. Seam the bottom of the skirt with a hem.

Wrap skirt

A wrap skirt is essential in your vacation wardrobe. Comfortable and beautiful at the same time. To sew it, choose flowing fabric, for example, silk, viscose, thin viscose silky knitwear.
For sewing, we will again need a pattern for the base of the skirt.

First you need to move the darts to the bottom. And open their solution by turning the pattern pieces. See picture.
Next, we will lengthen and make patterns as shown in the figure.

Let's mark the line of the skirt's wrap on the details of the front panel of the skirt in a spread.
Treat the upper section of the skirt with a belt equal to the length of the upper section of the skirt, insert cords made from fabric into the edge of the belt for ties around the waist. On the right side of the belt, make a welt loop for threading ties. Finish the bottom of the skirt with a hem stitch.
Our skirts are ready! You did a great job with the sewing. It's really easy to sew a summer skirt. The main thing is to approach the task creatively and with love! Enjoy wearing it and have a wonderful summer!
