Sew a double tablecloth for the table. Wide border of the tablecloth. MK. Tools and materials

Today we will learn how to sew a tablecloth with our own hands, we will consider simple options - a tablecloth for the dining room and a tablecloth for the kitchen.

DIY tablecloth for the dining room

This tablecloth made of mixed fabric is convenient for daily meals. And if you sew a tablecloth made of linen, satin or satin jacquard with an embossed pattern, then it will be suitable for festive feasts. What distinguishes our tablecloth from an ordinary kitchen tablecloth is the presence of a border. You can see how to choose the fabric component for this element in our photos. When selecting fabrics, it is necessary to take into account that they must be combined not only in color and texture, but also in terms of washing and ironing conditions.

What is needed for sewing:

. main fabric;
. Contrasting fabric for border.

Pattern construction, cutting and sewing:
  • Measure the length and width of the tabletop. Make a tablecloth pattern (Fig. 1).
  • Cut out the tablecloth panel from the main fabric.
  • Cut four strips onto a 28 cm wide border. Fold the strips in half lengthwise and iron. Unfold the folds.
  • Place the strips along the cut edges with the right side facing the right side of each side of the main fabric and stitch from the side of the main fabric, starting and ending 1.5 cm from the corner of the main fabric. Allow 1.5 cm for seam allowance.
  • Trim the seam allowance and iron it to the border side.
  • At each corner, overlap one border strip with right sides facing each other, lining up the short cuts.
  • Fold the border diagonally to mark the seam line.
  • Sew a seam from the corner of the main panel to the fold line, which is pressed in the center of the border.
  • Trim the diagonal seam allowance and turn the border to the wrong side. Fold the border 1.5 cm along the open long edge to the wrong side, iron and pin. Sew the hem to the edge. Sew the bias corner with a hidden seam on the wrong side (Fig. 2).

Square tablecloth for the kitchen

It is good to make a tablecloth for a square table in the kitchen from printed fabric using printed fabrics. To make the product practical, it is better to sew the tablecloth from a mixed fabric that washes well.

The color of the tablecloth should go well with the overall color scheme of the room and with the dishes.
Tablecloths made from mixed fabrics are easy to sew. In addition, this material requires virtually no ironing and is very convenient for everyday use in the kitchen.

What is necessary:
. printed fabric.

Pattern construction, cutting and sewing:

  • Measure the length of the tabletop and add the length of the overhang to it.
  • In our case, the length of the overhang is 40 cm. At the edges there is also a seam allowance of 3 cm on all sides.
  • Make a tablecloth pattern (Fig. 3).
  • Cut out the tablecloth panel from fabric.
  • Fold and iron double edges (one and a half centimeters each) along all edges of the tablecloth.
  • Unfold both edges and cut each corner diagonally, see fig. 4, going 5 mm beyond the point of intersection of the internal folds.
  • Place the diagonal edges together and fold the corner, marking the seam line. Sew along the marked line from the top of the inside corner to the hem line of the seam allowance.
  • The diagonal seams at each corner should be made at an exact 45 degree angle.
  • Press each seam, trim seam allowances, and turn corners right side out.

There are several ways to sew tablecloths, because the corners and side cuts of the fabric can be processed in different ways. In this material we have described a traditional and basic method, having mastered which you will be able to sew with your own hands not only festive or everyday tablecloths, but also kitchen napkins, towels and runners with neat corners and edges.

To sew a tablecloth with your own hands you will need:

  1. A piece of suitable fabric is the size you need;
  2. Threads to match the fabric and decorative trim;
  3. Sewing machine;
  4. Sewing supplies: tailor's scissors, ruler, measuring tape, pins, thimble, thread threader, chalk or marker;
  5. Decor if desired (this could be: sewing, border, fringe, lace, braid, etc.);
  6. Iron.

Step 1. Calculate fabric consumption

  1. Measure the length and width of the tabletop;
  2. Determine the desired length of the fabric overhang, that is, the distance from the edge of the tabletop to the edge of the future tablecloth.
  • The fabric overhang can be 20-40 cm or be floor-length. The longer the overhang, the more elegant the tablecloth will be, but also the more inconvenient to use, so for an everyday option, an overhang length of 20-30 cm is suitable;
  • When determining the length of the overhang, take into account the percentage of fabric shrinkage after washing - for cotton fabric and burlap you need to add 10 cm to the desired overhang length, for linen - 10-15 cm. You can go the other way - pre-wash and then iron the fabric thoroughly.
  1. Now take paper and pen and calculate the fabric consumption using the following simple formula:

*Please note that this formula specifies a hem allowance of 5 cm, but the hem itself will be only 4 cm wide.

Step 2. Cut the fabric

Iron the fabric if necessary, then lay it out on a work surface, make marks with a ruler and pencil, and then cut off the excess; no patterns are needed for a simple rectangular or square tablecloth.

The best way to mark the cutting line is to pull the thread out of the fabric. To do this, you need to make a small cut in the right place, pull and carefully pull out the thread, which will be your guide.

Step 3. Process the corners

Now we need to decorate the corners so that they look beautiful even from the inside out. For this:

  1. Place the fabric face down on the table, fold its edges 1 cm to the wrong side, secure the folds with pins (baste if necessary) and iron along the entire perimeter of the fabric.

  1. Next, on both sides of the corner, measure out segments 2 times larger than the width of the hem you planned (in this master class, the width of the hem is planned to be 4 cm, so a distance of 8 cm is measured from the corner). Then both marks must be connected using a ruler and pencil.
  1. Fold the fabric in the corner (wrong side out) lengthwise so that the marks match and secure the fold with pins. Then we stitch the corner along the markings.

  1. We cut off the excess in the corner, leaving only 5 mm seam allowance. Also trim the edge of the remaining seam allowance at the fold diagonally as shown in the photo below. This must be done so that the corner of the tablecloth turns out evenly.
  1. We turn the corner out, correct it and iron it. Next, we process the remaining 3 corners of the tablecloth using the described method. This is what you should get.

Step 4. Sew the hem

And finally, we begin to process the sides: iron the hems of the entire tablecloth, secure with pins and sew (from the inside out) by machine or by hand with a blind seam at a distance of 1 mm from the fold.

Step 5. Decorate the tablecloth

If you wish, you can decorate the resulting product with lace, appliques, fringe, flounces and ruffles, embroider monograms and patterns.

In the next video tutorial you can see not only the complete process of sewing a tablecloth, but also decorating it.

In our master class, we only looked at how to sew a rectangular or square tablecloth, but how to sew a decoration for a round table? We invite you to watch a video tutorial on how you can easily cut fabric for a round tablecloth without using a pattern and process its cuts with bias tape or glue web.

Previously, tablecloths only decorated the festive table, but today they are an indispensable element of the interior, capable of correctly placing accents not only in the kitchen, but also in other rooms of the house. And if you make a tablecloth with your own hands, you will also receive an exclusive product, specially created according to your preferences.

In principle, the technology for creating holiday products and everyday ones is not significantly different; you just need to correctly approach the choice of material, shape, size calculation, as well as decorative framing.

Careful preparation is the key to a successful result

It is necessary to prepare correctly so that the result exceeds all your expectations. A number of works must be completed before starting the sewing process:

  • Choose the most suitable fabric.
  • Determine the shape of the future product, since the material processing technology will be different.
  • Prepare the necessary tools.

Choosing material

When studying information on how to sew a tablecloth with your own hands, you will find various fabric options. These can be either synthetic, natural or combined fabrics.

You should know that for everyday use it is better that the product is made of practical material. This is considered jacquard, which has the necessary strength and is also easy to clean. Its color range is quite varied, so you can definitely choose the option that is most suitable for you. A jacquard product for the kitchen, made by yourself, will definitely attract the attention of your guests and decorate everyday meals.

If you are interested in holiday options, then it is better to give preference to natural fabrics. Sewing tablecloths for celebrations is best done from the following materials:

  1. Cotton. Delicate, flowing material.
  2. Linen. Not as practical as cotton ones, but in no way inferior in terms of external characteristics. They are not impregnated, so they are not as durable.
  3. Silk. For a magnificent special event, a silk product will be one of the best options for table decoration.

The choice of colors will depend on the decor of your room, as well as personal taste preferences.

Deciding on the form

To choose the right shape for a tablecloth, you need to know the following nuances:

  1. A rectangular table can only be covered with tablecloths of the same geometry. Sometimes special tracks are used as a covering for such countertops. This is an original design technique that can give a modern look to the interior.
  2. For square tables, only coverings of the same shape are suitable. To add style, two square tablecloths laid crosswise are sometimes used.
  3. Both square and round tablecloths look beautiful on round tables. You can even sew products of different shapes and combine them. It will look very stylish on the countertop.
  4. For an oval table, you can make a tablecloth in the shape of an ellipse or a rectangle.

Once you have decided on these parameters, You can proceed directly to the sewing process, you just need to prepare the tools:

  • Threads, pins, scissors;
  • Crayons, markers, ruler;
  • Iron and sewing machine;
  • Fabric and decor.

Let's start sewing

Regardless of whether the tablecloth is for the kitchen or for a table in the hallway, you should take careful measurements and cut the fabric. Important to consider not only the dimensions of the table, but also the length of the hanging parts. Add 2.5 cm to the parameters you calculated, since when sewing you will need to process the edge of the fabric. If you are planning to make a tablecloth with a border, then this should be taken into account at the stage of taking measurements and cutting. This element can be purchased in a store or you can make a chic lace border yourself by watching a detailed master class.

To make it easier to process the edge and make it look beautiful, it is better to first bend the 2.5 cm allowance left, pin it together and iron it.

Cutting diagram

Making a pattern for a rectangular or square tablecloth is much easier than for a round one. But if you need a round product to serve a gala dinner, then you can use a homemade compass made from twine. The fabric needs to be folded in four, and then measure the required radius on it and use twine to make an arc. Then, according to the marked marks, you should cut out the workpiece.

If it’s difficult for you to sew a tablecloth yourself or process the edges, you can make a lace frill using hot glue. And to make a beautiful corner, you can use a cardboard pattern during the sewing process. Using the same technology as the edge, the corner must be folded correctly and ironed well.

Original options

Today everyone strives to add zest to their interior. All new design trends help people with this. So, Recently, the following types of tablecloths have become popular:

Sewing types of tablecloths

A tablecloth woven in a factory and a tablecloth made by yourself is a huge difference, because the products you make yourself reflect your individuality and tastes.

Such “clothes” for the table help create a cozy, homely atmosphere and make get-togethers more comfortable. And if you want to bring the holiday spirit, then a handmade product will be very appropriate. For example, you can sew a New Year's tablecloth.

New Year's tablecloth

No celebration is complete without decoration. And what can we say about the New Year? On this day, every element is important, including the tablecloth on the New Year's table. You just need to choose the right fabric, cut it and stitch it.

For the fabric from which you make your own New Year's tablecloth, it is better to choose a material that is easy to wash. After all, force majeure happens quite often at the table, and no one will use a dirty coating.

The second stage is cutting. The procedure will depend on the shape of the table. Making a square version of the product is much easier, since the fabric just needs to be cut to the calculated dimensions, leaving an allowance for processing the edges. To make a round-shaped product, you should fold the material 4 times, mark the diameter, make an arc and cut it according to the marks.

It’s good when the New Year’s tablecloth is decorated with decorative elements with your own hands. It can be:

  • jacquard frills;
  • guipure inserts;
  • ruffles.

The applications look very original, but they are worth taking on only if you have some experience.

Woven tablecloth

Nowadays, many homes are decorated with a vintage woven tablecloth. Previously, it took a lot of effort and special machines to make such a canvas. The flax was carefully prepared and only then began work. Now you can purchase ready-made fabric in a store, cut it, stitch it, trim the edges, iron it and decorate it in an original way.

We sew different types of scraps

Lovers of everything newfangled can try to sew different things from scraps. The popular patchwork technique helps create a wide variety of unique tablecloths. To simplify the task, you can use the following instructions:

When choosing this technology, it should be taken into account that it is better to select pieces from the same type of fabric to make them easier to process. And such a product will look more harmonious.

Making your own napkins

If you don’t want a traditional everyday tablecloth, then you can ask how to make table napkins with your own hands. They will help create a festive atmosphere, becoming a good replacement for the traditional one. This option looks casual and is also very practical. You can easily sew them yourself. Before making them, decide on the material from which they will be sewn. It should be in harmony with the tablecloth both in texture and color.

Next you need to cut the material. Products with parameters of 50x50 cm are considered optimal. An allowance of 2 cm should be left on each edge. The most important process is the processing of corners. To make the napkin beautiful and neat, you need to:

Stylish, original table decor is not difficult to make. All you need is desire and a little imagination.

As for decorating the finished tablecloth, it all depends on the imagination of the hostess. You can simply sew on ready-made purchased lace. For a product made in a classic style, you can hem the edges and not use any decorative elements.

If we talk about linen tablecloths, then any type of frill decoration is suitable for them. For lovers of the Provence style, linen products at the end with a fabric border or oval lace are an ideal option. The frill can also be made of lace, which you can buy or knit yourself.

Whatever type of tablecloth you make yourself, it will be not just an original creation, but an exclusive one. This handmade product can decorate any room in your home.

How to make chair covers and tablecloths to make your dining area chic and cozy. Learn how to create a child's playhouse from a table.

The content of the article:

Home comfort is made up of details. If there is a tablecloth on the dining table and matching covers on the chairs, then it will be a pleasure to dine here in such a nice setting. There is one more function of capes. They will help turn old chairs into new ones. If leather or wooden ones are covered in this way, sitting on them will be more comfortable and pleasant.

We make chair covers - choose a style, create a seat

For this craft you will need:
  • dense fabric, such as muslin;
  • threads;
  • needle;
  • elastic band (depending on the style).
A pattern will help you make the perfect size chair cover. We start by drawing it up. Measure the width and length of the seat. If it is not rectangular, but rounded, then you need to put tracing paper here and circle it. The pattern will turn out perfect.

If you are sewing a simple chair cover, without a “skirt,” then you need to measure the sides of the seat and mark its corners. They will need to be cut out on the pattern and then on the fabric.

Don't forget to leave seam allowances of 1.3–1.5 mm on all sides. Let's first consider the option of a cape without a “skirt”. Attach the pattern to the fabric, cut the fabric along it. To prevent such a seat from slipping, cut out 4 ribbons from fabric or thick braid, which need to be pinned to the seat on the back side to tie it and fix it in this way. After this, you will tuck the edges of the fabric and stitch them, at the same time sewing these ties.

If the seat is round, then when drawing the pattern, do not forget to indicate these curves. Make notches on the fabric seam allowances so that the cover fits well in these places.

When stitching the corners, insert 4 pieces of elastic here (one for each corner), stretching each piece, stitch. Make one more seam, parallel to the first, moving them slightly towards the center to hide the elastic and make this place more durable.

Now let's consider the second option, when the chair cover is made in the form of a “skirt”. Then you don't need to create the seat sides. Having cut it out on the fabric, stitch the tape, gathering it along the entire length, including at the corners or only at them.

See what other chair covers you can make with or without a skirt.

  1. In the first picture, this part is only on three sides of the seat; the fourth will have a one-piece backrest.
  2. On the second one you see an option with a side panel and a small “skirt”.
  3. On the third - with a “skirt” of greater length. In the second and third photos, there are folds in the corners of this part of the cape for a better fit. The bottom is edged with ruffle.
  4. In photo 4 there are folds on the bottom of the seat backrest.
  5. On the fifth - they are only in the corners of the seat.
The lower photos include 5 more models. If you like them and your chairs are of this shape, you can use these samples to implement them.

DIY back cover

We continue to sew the chair cover. If the back is rectangular and flat at the top, then place the fabric on it, as shown in the photo, baste from the sides. If it is semicircular, then make a stitch at the top using a needle and thread.

Remove the workpiece from the back, making sure that this can be done without force.

Since many types of fabric shrink, iron the entire length of the fabric using a steamer before cutting. Then it will no longer change its size even after washing.

Trim the seams on all sides, leaving an allowance of 1.3 cm. Sew the back on a machine, stitch it to the seat, after which the chair cover is ready. You can leave it as is or decorate it with various elements.

How to make accessories?

You can decorate the covers with buttons like these, sewing them on the back of the cape.

To make them you need:
  • plastic rings;
  • textile;
  • needle;
  • matching threads;
  • yarn;
  • ball pen.

Take a plastic ring and place it on the canvas. Outline this detail so that you can wrap the edges of the resulting circle inward, and they would meet in its center with a small margin.

Wrap the ring in fabric, bring the edges to the center, and sew them together using a needle and thread.

Place thin yarn in the eye of a large needle and sew a decorative stitch along the edge of the button.

Cut out a circle from the fabric, the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the ring. Sew buttons on the back side. Place a ballpoint pen here and thread it around the center.

Duplicate the resulting loop with dense transverse turns.

This is how you can make decorative buttons to decorate a chair cover. Use them or another accessory for decoration. Here's how to make a ribbon bow. Cut out 4 identical segments from it, and the fifth one is slightly smaller.

Connect the edges of each of the four strips, bend these elements into figure eights, and stitch in the middle.

Now fold the blanks in pairs as shown in the photo, tie them in the center with thread. Fold the fifth strip lengthwise, turning the edges inward.

Tie it in the center with a nice knot. Fold the edges back, sew them, after which the bow, made with your own hands, is ready.

After you have made the cover for the chair and decorated it, all that remains is to sew one more important item, and then your dining area will be flawless.

How to sew a tablecloth with your own hands?

To make one, you need to cut a rectangle out of fabric. It should be approximately 15 cm larger than the table cover on all sides. Tuck the edges of the workpiece and sew them on a machine. To sew such tablecloths for the table further, cut a ribbon from the fabric.

If the fabric for the tablecloth has, for example, a white background and green inclusions, then cut out a ruffle from a plain green one. In the same way, observing the color scheme, cut out frills from other fabrics.

To make an edging like the one in the photo, you first need to process it using an overlocker on one side and the other of the tape. If you don’t have such a stitch, then just turn the edges under on both sides and stitch.

Read how to make a round tablecloth. After all, if you have a table of this shape, then this one will do.

Measure the diameter of your table, divide this figure in half to find the radius. Fold the wide fabric in half, then in half again. From the central corner, measure the calculated radius diagonally, add to it as many centimeters as you want the future product to hang from the sides.

Next, the round tablecloth is processed along the edge. If you have a blanket stitch, you can use it to do this. If not, then get a slant bat. Fold it with the edge of the tablecloth with right sides facing each other, stitch to the wrong side. Iron the seam, turn the tape onto the face, stitch it on this side, turning the edge inward.

If you don't have store-bought bias tape, make your own. To do this, cut the fabric diagonally into strips 2.5–3 cm wide. They will stretch well, which is what is needed for such work.

If you wish, your round tablecloth will be made a little differently. Place the cloth on a clean floor. Turn the table over on it. Trace the tabletop onto the fabric and cut it out, adding a 1.5 cm seam allowance on all sides.

Cut out a ruffle from the same or another fabric. Process this detail from below, stitch along the edge of the tablecloth, making folds from this edging at the same distance. Or first gather this part onto the thread using a basting stitch, and then sew it along the edge of the tablecloth.

You can make not one, but several such frills.

A tablecloth for an oval table is created in the same way, only it is made according to the shape of its tabletop. Those who know how to embroider can decorate it this way.

A tablecloth for a rectangular table could be like this.

Then cut out a rectangle for the tabletop according to its dimensions, sew fabric strips on the sides equal in length to the distance from the tabletop to the floor. Banquet and wedding tables are usually decorated this way.

In the latter case, this design idea is suitable.

The sides of the tablecloth are edged with fabric with evenly laid folds and decorated with a rectangular piece of silk fabric.

Making houses for children

Surprisingly, a tablecloth, sewn in a certain way, can turn a table into a playground. Probably, many of you have noticed that kids love to crawl under the table and play there. You will not need to buy houses for children, since you can temporarily turn an ordinary table into one.

Here's what you need for this:

  • thick fabric;
  • cardboard or paper;
  • cellophane or transparent fabric;
  • scissors;
  • Velcro;
  • thread, needle.

Here are the stages of work to create such a useful thing.
  1. We start sewing a tablecloth for children by cutting it out. Measure a rectangular tabletop, cut out a piece of fabric of that size, cut it out, adding 1.3 cm on all sides.
  2. Measure the distance from the countertop to the floor. Remember it - this will be the height of the remaining parts. Measure their width by placing a tape measure or measuring tape between the table legs. Cut out a large back side panel, and two smaller ones, which you will place on the right and left sides.
  3. There will be 3 parts in front. Two are identical, on which you will make windows and the third, which will become a door.
  4. To make the blanks look good from all sides, cut out 2 identical parts. Then you will sew them from the inside out, turn them inside out. If you want to quickly sew a house for children with your own hands, then do things differently and take thick double-breasted fabric.
  5. Sew the long side of the back of the table with the short ones, stitching them at the top to the tabletop fabric.
  6. To make windows, place the blank in front of you and place a square sheet of paper or cardboard on it. Using the same stencil, cut out a window from thick cellophane. You can use transparent fabric instead, but make these elements with a margin.
  7. Sew the tape criss-cross onto these makeshift windows. If you are making a tablecloth from two sheets, then put cellophane between them where the holes are cut for the windows and sew them on. If you are using a plain color, then place these “glasses” on top of it, edge it with braid or strips of fabric, tucking them in.
  8. Attach these elements, sewing them on top to the fabric tabletop, and on the side, to the side blanks.
  9. The width of the door should be such that it overlaps the window blanks by 5–10 cm on each side. Sew it to the tabletop from above, and attach 2 fabric ribbons here. When necessary, the child will lift the door and secure it with Velcro sewn onto these 2 ties.
Here's how to make a children's playhouse. If you wish, check out other projects.

Tablecloth without sewing on an oval table

If you don't know how to sew at all, don't worry. We suggest you make a tablecloth without picking up a needle and thread. But here you will need hot glue:

  • Spread the cloth on the table.
  • Decide on the length and cut off any excess.

Important! It is best to mark the cut line along the entire circumference with dots.

  • Glue the lace strip to the bottom using hot glue.

Tablecloth made from scraps of fabric

Tablecloth for a round table

How to sew a round tablecloth? How to calculate material consumption for a round table? To correctly calculate fabric consumption, measure the diameter of your table top, as well as the height of the future tablecloth on both sides. You will get three indicators that need to be added. Let's say your table diameter is 76 cm and the height of the tablecloth on each side is also 76 cm. The length of the tablecloth will be 76+76+76=2.28 m.

Important! Don't forget about seam allowances and hem allowances. They also need to be multiplied by two.

Operating procedure:

  1. Cut the fabric so that you have a square. Lay it out on the table.
  2. You can use a measuring tape as a compass. Fix it in the middle and draw a circle. Cut out and the tablecloth is almost ready.
  3. If the fabric does not fray, then it does not need to be hemmed. But it’s better to hem or melt the edges. To hem, fold 1cm of edge over to the wrong side and iron. Then fold it again and iron it again. Now machine hem the hem.

Important! Make sure that no folds form. You can use pins or adhesive tape.
