These are universal chairs on which burlap bows, delicate ribbons, garlands, and floral decor look beautiful. A more economical and lightweight option, especially for outdoor ceremonies – folding chairs. They can be decorated with paper garlands, lace, ribbons, and scraps of fabric.

Upholstered chairs look self-sufficient; you can add some zest to them by decorating the back with a floral wreath, a wooden sign, or a garland of lace or flowers.

Gaining more and more popularity forged furniture, which in itself looks gorgeous. However, decor for such furniture will not hurt: branches and flower arrangements, ribbons, wooden signs, etc. Classic chairs are most often painted black, brown or gold. The main material for decorating chairs is fabric; its main advantage is the ability to choose the material of the color and texture you need. Additionally, beads, emblems, figurines, fresh flowers, etc. are used.

Decorating chairs for a wedding with bows

It is very important to remember that the entire wedding ceremony should be permeated with a single idea and stylistic decision

You don’t want to cover classic chairs in a color that suits you or chairs with sophisticated backs, so you can decorate with bows. How to tie a bow depends on your imagination and skills. We offer several ways to make bows for wedding chairs with your own hands:

  1. To do this, you will need a wide (about 30-35 cm) organza ribbon 1.5 meters long. We tie it on the back of the chair in such a way that the beautiful knot “looks” into the room. We tie it with a simple bow, threading the ends of the ribbon. Straighten the resulting bow thoroughly.
  2. The traditional bow with a double wrap is done in the same way, but we wrap the ribbon twice around the back of the chair.
  3. A knot creates a slightly less pompous look, but this is one of the popular and quick ways to decorate chairs.
  4. We throw a piece of fabric over the back of the chair, pull all the loose fabric into a bun and secure it with a beautiful strap or ribbon. We straighten the fabric.

How to decorate a chair for a wedding? There are many ways to decorate - from “traditional” lush bows or fabric covers to fashionable gradient-style ribbon decorations. As a rule, the choice of a particular option for decorating chairs depends on the theme and style of the wedding celebration. So, take note!

Wedding chair covers: add bows

The most common way is to decorate chairs with fabric covers. At the same time, the cover can serve as an excellent “camouflage”, reliably hiding unpresentable parts of the chairs. In most cases, only the backs of chairs are covered with covers - a more economical option, since the fabric consumption for such decor is much less.

The fabric is usually chosen in light colors - white, cream, beige. However, plain covers should be “diluted” with colored contrasting accents in the form of ribbons or bows. Cuts of guipure, chiffon, satin or silk are suitable for this.

Chair covers for a wedding can be purchased in a store, rented at a wedding salon, or even sewn with your own hands. And if you show a little creativity, you can do without sewing at all - just beautifully wrap the chairs with pieces of fabric, crowning the composition with an intricate bow. Fractures in the folds of the fabric can also be decorated with a flower with a decorative sprig of greenery.

How to decorate a chair for a wedding with ribbons?

Satin bright ribbons are perfect for partial decoration of chairs - an alternative to traditional fabric covers, satin bows and chiffon scarves. Ribbon decorations in style should also be combined with the design of the wedding table and banquet hall.

It can be a “fun” color – tie a bunch of bright colorful ribbons in knots to the back of the chair. Simple and tasteful!

Modern fashion trends in wedding design – decoration in Ombre style. This effect can be achieved by selecting ribbons of the same color in different shades. How to decorate chairs for a wedding with your own hands in Ombre style? Let's take a short master class!

First you need to decide on the color of the composition and stock up on skeins of ribbons. For example, let’s take nine shades of the pink palette, smoothly transitioning from lighter to richer. The softest pink (almost white) comes first, and then alternately darker shades. In addition, we will need scissors. And, of course, a chair - with a rectangular back and transverse (or longitudinal) crossbars.

We measure the “girth” of the back of the chair and add 5–10 cm of reserve to this value. From each skein we cut 5 strips of ribbon of the calculated length. Now we take a ribbon of the brightest shade and tightly wrap it around the back of the chair around the circumference, leaving “tails” at both ends - the same reserve that we tie in a beautiful knot. The location of the knot can be in the middle of the back or on the side. After we have knitted all 5 pieces of the same shade, we proceed to the remaining ribbons, observing the gradient rule. Chic decor of chairs for a wedding! And very simple to implement.

But Ombre in violet-blue-lilac tones. If the design of the chair allows, you can cross-weave the ribbons - an original solution.

The combination of colors can be arbitrary - several lighter ribbons (white, cream) and a pair of the main color of a darker shade.

Decorating chairs for a wedding with flowers

As a decorative option, flowers can be used as an independent decoration or as an addition to other elements - fabric or ribbons. Decorations made from fresh or artificial flowers are made in the form of bouquets, wreaths, garlands, small flowerpots, and baskets. This composition is attached to the back of the chair using ribbons matched to the tone of the design.

Signs - as an option for decorating chairs for a wedding

According to the serving rules, there should be place cards on the table indicating the name of the guest, usually located near the glasses or on the top appetizer plate. What if we borrow this idea and use comic signs to decorate chairs? This type of decor is not very popular here, but in European countries it is the latest “squeak”.

The material used to make cards is not only paper, but also wooden planks, plastic or fabric.

Old furniture does not always need decoration; there are still many cases when it would be appropriate. Painting or sewing covers will help update the interior or fit old chairs into a new style. On the eve of the holidays, decorating chairs with flowers, ribbons, and themed capes will help create the appropriate atmosphere. To return furniture to its former attractiveness and even make it even better, you will need a little: desire and inspiration.

Old heroes in a new color

Painting is the easiest and fastest way to update old chairs. Whether the new furniture will be single-colored, multi-colored or with a pattern depends on your imagination and preferences. The only question left is which paint to choose.

  • Stain will perfectly highlight the beauty of old wood. It comes in different shades, but for restoration it is still better to give preference to dark ones.
  • Milky natural paints are absolutely harmless; they give the surface a charming matte and vintage look. Painting tape will help create a contrasting striped pattern or pattern on the chairs.
  • Latex or oil paints will provide rich, vibrant color. Stools will become more modern if you paint the legs in different colors.
  • Spray paint makes it possible to create any design using a stencil. Alternatively, you can put a lace napkin on the seat, back, and arms of the chair and apply paint through it. The result is a delicate rustic design.

The work is carried out in the following order:

  • Remove the old coating from the surface using sandpaper.
  • Degrease and prime.
  • After drying, they are painted in one or several layers of paint or stain, and then varnished.

Decoupage

A very popular technique, which is also used to update old furniture. Decoupage is the process of gluing images (applied to a napkin or very thin paper) to a surface.

Various techniques allow you to obtain the desired texture or visual effect: gilding, aging (brushing, crackle, shabby), artistic or three-dimensional drawing. It is not uncommon to use a combination of several decorative effects. The choice of picture and technique depends primarily on the style of the interior. The chair, updated with appropriate designs, will fit perfectly into the interior of ethno, military, country, Provence, loft, shabby chic, eclecticism.

Stool renewal is carried out in several stages. The furniture is cleaned of old coating, varnish or paint, degreased and primed. Next, the main background is applied with acrylic paint. After drying, the pattern is glued to the surface, treated with paints, additional elements and varnished.

Cases: for all occasions

Chair covers are not only a way to decorate old, and, in general, new furniture, they are much more functional: they serve as protection against dirt and damage, help to fit the furniture into a given interior style or simply update the decor, they can be used for everyday or formal occasions.

The most convenient way to make patterns for a case is using a dummy. The chair is covered with newspapers or tracing paper, then the homemade cover is cut into individual elements with scissors. The accuracy of the pattern depends on correctly taken measurements. And of course, one should not forget about allowances, cutting errors, and shrinkage of the fabric after washing.

Fabric covers

Covers can be easily made with your own hands. For ordinary chairs with a back, you will need about 1.5-2 meters of fabric. It should be noted that the decor of the chair should correspond to the style of the interior, emphasize and complement it.

  • Cotton fabrics will be appropriate in Provence or country styles. For the first, choose pastel colors with a small flower pattern, and the ethnic theme is best complemented by a large checkered pattern.
  • Eco style will be emphasized by capes made of coarse burlap. To give them a modern touch, you can complement the case with patches made of denim, which also goes well with wood.
  • In classic interiors, more durable fabrics with large patterns, matte or with a satin sheen, such as gabardine, are used.

You can use almost any fabric or combine several to sew a cover. Chairs with faux fur covers and the same “socks” on the legs will look very interesting.

Knitted covers

Knitted covers will be especially appropriate in winter; they will be associated with warmth and comfort. Knitted items look very interesting, as if a huge sweater was pulled over a frozen chair. A large volumetric pattern made of thick pastel-colored thread would be optimal. Of course, if your soul requires it, you can choose brighter shades.

Socks for feet will be an unusual addition. Chairs dressed in “shoes” look original and will never scratch the floor covering. Openwork capes filled with summer lightness and coolness are usually crocheted. In addition, original handmade items will create a calm and truly homely atmosphere.

Festive felt covers

Felt is familiar to every needlewoman. This material is very easy to work with, so it is often used for holiday decor. On the eve of any event, felt chair back covers made in a holiday theme will be an excellent addition and decoration.

On New Year's Eve, you can also sew mitten covers or capes in the form of a Santa Claus hat on the backs. In general, there are countless options, everything is limited only by the imagination of the master.

Unconventional ideas

If we delve deeper into the issue of decorating chairs, there is no doubt that a wide variety of, sometimes unexpected, materials can be used. You won’t surprise anyone with simple coloring; twigs, ropes, flowers, candies, tree bark and old discs are used.

This option is considered more suitable for massive stools and chairs. Although, if you wish, you can try to decorate more sophisticated furniture. The upholstery is removed from the chair and pieces of twine of the required length are prepared for each individual element (legs, crossbars, handles). Next, follow a simple technique: fix the end of the rope with a stapler or a small nail and begin to tightly wrap the product. The other end is secured in the same way. You can make simple weaving on the backs of the chair, which will become a noticeable decoration.

The rope can be left plain or decorated as you wish. In general, you can use not only rope for winding, it can be artificial rattan or scraps of fabric twisted into a rope.

Natural materials

The use of natural materials is relevant not only in school crafts. Even Italian designers (Andrea Magnani and Giovanni Delvezzio from the Re Sign studio) distinguished themselves with the simple but unexpected idea of decorating chairs with bark. Not everyone can buy designer furniture, but anyone can take an idea and bring it to life.

Wooden chairs should closely match the natural material, so they are cleaned of varnish, sanded with fine sandpaper and left in that form. The maximum that can be done is to cover it with stain to give it a tint. The prepared tree bark is glued in a loose order; the designers chose one leg and a back for gluing.

Another equally interesting approach is to decorate the chairs with flat pebbles. The stone is glued directly to the seat and back. An unusual chair can decorate a bathroom, balcony or garden, especially if there are other marine-themed items nearby.

Mosaic

If, in addition to old chairs, you also find unnecessary or damaged disks at home, you can decorate a piece of furniture with a mosaic. A pattern made from small colored pieces will look original and interesting, and the updated chair will fit perfectly into almost any interior.

The mirror side of the discs is rubbed with fine sandpaper, after which colored glossy paper is glued onto it. Then cut the disk into equal squares (it’s more convenient to immediately divide them into colors). The chair also needs to be prepared. The surface is sanded, degreased and primed. Mosaic squares are glued one by one in the form of a selected pattern or randomly. After drying, the gaps between the “tiles” are filled with construction putty, and the surface is coated with varnish.

Pompom chair

Decorating a chair with pom-poms is very expensive in terms of material and time, but as a result, the restored chair looks very bright and cozy. It will ideally complement a children's room, and perhaps become a colorful accent in a bedroom or living room. It is more convenient to attach pompoms to a mesh or piece of fabric. At the end of the work, the soft lining is fixed to the seat and back of the chair. If necessary, the decoration can be easily removed and washed. Pompom seats will look very interesting on stools in the kitchen.

The old chair does not have to stay at home; it can find its new place in the garden or on the terrace in the form of an original flower bed. At the same time, it is not necessary to restore, restore, or repair it.

But if the idea requires it, the stool can be repainted or even painted with bright colors. Then a hole is cut in the seat and a flowerpot with flowers is installed.

The conclusion suggests itself: if only there were chairs, there would definitely be a suitable option for decorating them. You don't have to be a restoration artist to do this. Anyone can update or decorate furniture, and then sit on the fruits of their labor with a feeling of complete satisfaction.

Usually, few people think about the decor of chairs when decorating a wedding, but in vain. Beautifully decorated seating for the newlyweds and guests will add a finished look to any banquet hall. The classic decor of wedding chairs is a variety of fabric covers, but we will present different ideas for you to choose from. It would seem like a small thing, but a stylish twist is added to the overall picture of the celebration, from which the wedding only benefits.

Chair design ideas for wedding celebrations

At a wedding, people always pay attention to the style of the room and all the small details, because they create the mood. The beautiful decor of all wedding chairs is easily achievable at minimal cost, because many ideas can be implemented at home. For example:

  • Handmade bright embroidery. Many girls know how to embroider - labor lessons at school should not be in vain. Hand embroidery for decoration is always an ideal option: cheap, most pleasant, and it’s also an excellent opportunity to show your future husband what a good needlewoman his bride is. But if you don’t have time to decorate all the chairs in the banquet hall with embroidery, then limit yourself to just the seats of the newlyweds.
  • Decorating with beads is also an interesting idea, especially if you still have old beads and necklaces at home. Feel free to use them to decorate your wedding. And it doesn’t matter that the beads are not the same color and size, in the end this mix will look vintage, and guests will definitely pay attention to this creativity.

  • Colored paper. Paper details that look like fans, flowers or pompoms look very stylish at any occasion and a wedding is no exception. There are many master classes on the Internet on how to make them yourself.

  • Leaves or greenery look especially good if the wedding ceremony is held outdoors. Guests will definitely appreciate this design in boho or rustic style.

  • Photos. Joint photographs of the newlyweds will look romantic, touching, and soulful on the newlyweds’ chairs. An original idea is to attach photographs of guests to each place where they will sit.

Fabric

More often, fabric is used to decorate wedding chairs. The classic technique is identical fabric covers tied with a tulle or satin bow. The covers are diversified with different drapery: ruffles, flounces, tucks. In this way it is easy to hide less than presentable furniture under a beautiful fabric. The color and texture of the fabric is selected to match the dress, the bride’s bouquet or other decor of the banquet hall. Light shades are common: white, peach, beige, pink and other pastel colors.

Flowers

Floristry looks especially chic in a wedding interior, where plants of different shapes and colors are used along with decorative elements. If you choose floral decoration for your celebration, the wedding will be exclusive, because each composition is unique. Floral arrangements can be linear, round, garlands, wreaths, with candles, whole wedding arches in the shape of a heart or a semicircle, and all this is attached to the chairs of the bride, groom, and invited guests.

The chairs are draped with both fresh and artificial flowers, collected in a bouquet or in the form of capital letters of the newlyweds' names. Usually the flower arrangement on the chairs or tables of the banquet hall is the same and is made in full accordance with the chosen color scheme and style of the wedding celebration. The main task of flower arrangements is to set the bride, groom and all guests in a festive mood, without interfering with the enjoyment of the holiday.

Bows and ribbons

It’s easy to transform an ordinary chair into an elegant piece for a wedding hall using very simple methods: ribbons or bows. They look great on folding wooden chairs, tied at the back. Ribbons are used plain or colored. This decor looks especially colorful in nature: multi-colored ribbons will flutter in the wind, creating an atmosphere of joy and positivity.

Bows are tied on top of covers or simply on a chair. As a rule, if the cover is a light shade, then a contrasting bow is chosen. With the help of bows, it is easy to save on wedding decor by simply tying them on the chair of each guest: it will look less elegant than with a cover, but more soulful. The materials used for bows are:

  • silk;
  • guipure;
  • chiffon;
  • organza;
  • atlas.

Signs and inscriptions

The most daring and unusual solution is to decorate wedding chairs for all participants in the celebration with signs with inscriptions. They can be easily made at home and then attached to the backs of chairs in a banquet hall at any convenient time. This is the most budget option of all, just choose an interesting font, background and print the guest’s name in A4 format on a color printer. Don't like name tags? Use different male and female silhouettes or inscriptions, for example, “Prince”, “Princess”, “Madame”, “Mister” and the like.

Video: options for draperies and chair decorations

Chairs are the most commonly used pieces of furniture. That is why they age quite quickly and acquire a nondescript appearance. Many owners immediately send worn-out chairs to the scrap heap, but if you wish, you can restore them to their former attractiveness. Decorating chairs with your own hands will help breathe new life into them. In addition, you can decorate the interior in the same way for a holiday - a wedding, New Year or birthday.

Decorating chairs does not require much labor or materials. All you need is a few fabric ribbons and a little imagination.

In order to restore the aesthetic appearance of old chairs, there are several simple methods, each of which can be successfully used at home. Everything you need for decoration can be purchased at any shopping center.

Decorating chairs using fabric

There are often situations when, during renovation, owners completely change the colors of the walls and the furniture no longer matches the new interior. What to do? It’s a pity to throw away comfortable and high-quality chairs. Decorating chairs with fabric will come in handy here.

The main thing with this method of updating chairs is to choose a durable and reliable material that matches the color of the finish. It can be microfiber, jacquard or furniture silk, but most craftsmen still recommend using tapestry. This fabric is characterized by high wear resistance and durability due to the inclusion of artificial fibers in its composition.

Scheme for measuring the chair and draping the cover.

If you need to decorate chairs for a holiday, you can choose a more elegant fabric with thematic designs, without paying attention to its performance characteristics, because when the holiday passes, the decor will be removed from the chairs. If we are talking about reupholstering furniture to meet the requirements of a new interior, the material must be very durable, easy to clean and not subject to contamination.

In addition to the fabric, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • a piece of foam rubber;
  • thin batting;
  • furniture braid or tape;
  • construction stapler;
  • furniture glue;
  • sandpaper;
  • scissors;
  • pliers;

First of all, you need to pay attention to the reliability of the chair design. If it is old enough, creaks and wobbles, all the parts need to be disassembled, the fastening points checked for strength, the grooves cleaned with sandpaper, removing irregularities, and then the structure must be put back together, gluing the parts with furniture glue.

If the chair is strong and reliable, you can immediately begin decorating. To do this, place a piece of foam rubber corresponding to the size of the seat on the base. Then the foam rubber is covered with a sheet of batting, which has an allowance on each side 5 cm larger than the size of the seat. The third layer will be a piece of fabric the same size as the batting. The batting and fabric are folded under the base of the seat and secured on the underside using a staple gun. Excess material is trimmed with scissors.

Schemes for decorating chairs using fabric.

When cutting material for decorating chairs, close attention should be paid to the location of the design or pattern. It is better if it is located in the center of the seat. In order to correctly position the pattern, it is advisable to first mark the fabric with a pencil or chalk, and only then cut out the parts.

Decorating the back of a chair is similar to decorating a seat: first, foam rubber is applied to the element, then batting and fabric. The edges of the batting and fabric are folded over and secured to the chair using a stapler. In order to hide the paper clips, the seams are decorated with thick braid or tape. Transparent wood glue is used to attach it.

Decorating chairs using decoupage technique

Today, decoupage is one of the most popular methods of decoration. This is a great way to decorate not only accessories such as boxes, bottles, vases and much more, but also pieces of furniture. Finishing using the decoupage technique is suitable for chairs made entirely of wood or plywood that do not have soft backs or seats.

In order to decorate the chairs, you will need to prepare:

  • clean dry cloth;
  • container with water;
  • sandpaper;
  • wood putty;
  • putty knife;
  • any furniture paint (preferably white);
  • paint brush;
  • PVA glue;
  • napkins for decoupage or pictures;
  • clear varnish for furniture.

Before decorating the chairs, you need to check all connections for strength.

First of all, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface to be decorated from dust and dirt. Then it should be sanded and puttied. When the putty has dried, the surface is again sanded until smooth. It is advisable to apply at least two layers of putty, making them as thin as possible.

After this, the chair can be painted with paint of any desired color, but experts recommend using white water-based paint, because it is on a white background that decoupage looks most advantageous. When painting, remember that it is necessary to use fresh dye, since the old composition may become yellowish or peel after drying.

Then the drawing from special napkins or pictures must be transferred to the chair seat. You can do this as follows:

  1. All the necessary elements are cut out from special napkins or pictures. In this case, each drawing should have an indentation from the edge of about 3 mm.
  2. A layer of PVA glue, slightly diluted with water, is applied to the surface to be treated.
  3. The cut out elements of the design are lowered into a container of water for several minutes, then blotted with a clean, dry rag or towel. A layer of glue is also applied to them.
  4. The workpiece is applied to the surface to be processed and smoothed. Excess glue is removed. This way all parts of the decoration are glued on.

When the elements are dry, you need to finish painting the piece of furniture. To do this, use a mixture of equal proportions of PVA glue, white paint and water. Painting should begin with the decoration elements, using a small brush to paint over the contours of the design, then you need to take a large brush and paint the entire seat. When the paint has dried, the treated surface must be covered with several layers of transparent acrylic varnish. Each coat takes about 24 hours to dry, so varnishing may take 3-4 days.

In this way, you can decorate not only chairs, but also a stool. Without a doubt, it will become an object whose appearance will surprise not only relatives, but also guests.

Decorating with jute rope

Decor made from natural jute will create an atmosphere of comfort and warmth in the apartment. In addition, it can become a beautiful accent to highlight the style of the interior. To decorate chairs with jute you need to prepare:

You need to wrap the stool with jute as tightly as possible, gluing the rope where it cannot be secured.

  • a piece of fabric of a suitable color;
  • rope made of jute or sisal with a thickness of at least 3.5 mm;
  • stapler;
  • glue;
  • ruler and pencil;
  • scissors;
  • hammer;
  • wallpaper studs.

First, you need to remove the old upholstery from the seat. Then the entire structure is wrapped with rope. The working technique is as follows: the edge of the rope is secured to the inside of the leg, back or other part of the structure using a bracket or nail. After this, the entire structure is tightly wrapped with rope. The other end of the rope is fixed in the same way.

In those places where the rope cannot be secured or nailed, it must be glued to the base using wood glue, hiding the ends. To make the decoration look more harmonious, you can remove the middle from the back of the chair, leaving only the base of the structure, and weave it with a rope, covering the central empty part of the back. Weaving should be done in the form of a mesh with large or small cells.

Instead of the old upholstery, the seat is covered with new fabric. To do this, a piece is cut out of the material, the dimensions of which are 5 cm larger on each side of the seat. The edges of the fabric are tucked under the seat and secured with a construction stapler. You can drive decorative wallpaper nails along the outer side of the seat to secure the fabric drapery.

Other ways to decorate chairs

If the interior requires themed decoration, several other decoration methods can be used here. After the celebration, the decor is removed.

So, you can decorate chairs for your wedding day with bows, strips of fabric, garlands, fresh or artificial flowers and leaves.

For example, a garland of rag flags in the shape of triangles will look unusual. On each flag you can write letters that, when assembled into a garland, will form the names of the newlyweds. Chairs with an openwork back can be decorated with large bows made of wide strips of fabric or lace, into the knot of which bouquets of wildflowers and other plant material are woven. Gypsophila sprigs or dried flowers are perfect for these purposes.

Decorating chairs for the holiday or updating them to suit the requirements of a new interior is not at all difficult. You just need to show a little imagination, and your home will be replenished with an original piece of furniture that will inspire admiration among friends and acquaintances.
