Sewing clothes at home for dogs. DIY clothing patterns for small breed dogs

Article updated: June 16, 2018 at 02:05 pm

With the arrival of autumn, the fur of our fluffy little tails needs protection from precipitation and bad weather. Therefore, a blanket for dogs will be an excellent way out of this situation. Depending on the purpose, blankets can be made of various materials: cotton, leather, fur, nylon, membrane fabric. A blanket can serve as both an independent item of your dog’s wardrobe and additional waterproof protection for warm clothes.

Unlike overalls, a walking blanket does not restrict movement, allowing your pet to enjoy active games while walking.

But for dogs prone to hypothermia and colds, pregnant dogs, as well as very tiny puppies, it is still better to purchase insulated overalls that completely protect the animal’s chest and paws.

If you have a seasoned short-haired dog that is difficult to force into wearing any protective clothing, then try making a very ordinary blanket!

In addition to the fact that it will be much easier for you to agree on how to dress your pet, blankets have many other advantages:

  • This is a universal form of clothing that is easy to pick up (or sew) without trying on.
  • It is enough to know only the length of the pet’s body from neck to tail.
  • The width of the blanket can be easily adjusted to fit the animal’s body circumference using straps or Velcro.
  • The blanket is easy to put on and take off.
  • It doesn't restrict movement.
  • A blanket made of waterproof materials perfectly protects the four-legged animal from precipitation. Easily washable and does not absorb dirt.

In general, a blanket for dogs is a universal form of clothing, borrowed by dog handlers from horse owners.

Of course, you don’t have to waste time, but just go and buy a blanket in the store. But, as a rule, in pet stores their prices are unreasonably inflated. And it is often difficult to choose the color of fabric that you like.

If you don’t want to bother making a dog blanket yourself, but want to buy inexpensive clothes for your pet, then the second option is a Chinese website. But there are also disadvantages here: firstly, the parcel will take a very long time; secondly, it may not reach you at all; and thirdly, the contents inside the parcel may be completely different from what you expected (size, quality).

By the way, at first I didn’t even think about sewing Jack’s blanket myself. I took the easy route and ordered it from China via the Internet. I was happy with everything: inexpensive, the style and colors were very nice. But there is only one “But”!

I ordered a blanket in April, and now it’s the end of August... And the package never reached me... And clouds began to appear in the sky more and more often. It rains almost every day!

Well, I decided: stop waiting for a miracle, it’s time to take up the needle and thread.

It turned out that everything was very simple. Even novice needlewomen can sew such a blanket. The Internet is full of patterns, you just need to choose the model you like and design it to the size of your pet. I took exactly this path.

Before you run to the store and buy fabric, I first advise you to make a blanket pattern for your dog. Based on the finished pattern, it will be easier for you to decide how much fabric you will need. In general, if you find it difficult to decide on the amount of fabric for a blanket, you can go straight to the store with this pattern, where the sellers will accurately measure out the required amount of the material you like.

Let's look at how to design a pattern.

First of all, you need to measure the length of the dog's back from the neck (where the collar goes on) to the base of the tail.

For example, the length of Jack's back is 30 cm. I divided 30 by 10 and got the size of the side of the square for my pattern - 3 cm. You should get your own square size, depending on the length of your doggie's back.

Draw a grid of squares on lined tracing paper (or just on checkered paper). Draw it? Next, we look at the sample and transfer the pattern directly into the cells onto our “grid”.

For the upper part of the pattern (back), the grid should consist of 7x13 squares.

For the lower part of the pattern (tummy), the grid should consist of 7x10 squares.

When the dog blanket pattern has already been drawn, you can cut it out and go to the store to select fabric.

What do we need

As I already wrote, the choice of materials depends on the purpose of the blanket. But today we are not looking at a warm winter blanket for a dog, but a light raincoat for cloudy weather.

So, to make a raincoat blanket we will need the following materials:

  • Water-repellent, lightweight, breathable membrane fabric.
  • Lining fabric.
  • Velcro, buttons or strap for fastening (your choice).

How to sew a blanket for a dog - step-by-step instructions

Well, all the materials are prepared, you can start. First of all, transfer both pattern pieces to the fabric.

First on the main one, and then in exactly the same way on the lining.
Don't forget to add about 1 cm for seam allowances on each edge.

Important! Each pattern piece is half a piece. So when you start transferring the pattern onto the fabric, you will need to fold the fabric in half and place the part of the pattern that says “fold line” on the fold of the fabric.

After cutting all the parts, when unfolding, you should get these parts of the overalls.

You can cut the lining fabric so that it completely duplicates the details of the main fabric. Or you can do it a little differently, like I did.

As a rule, in the area of the upper body the impact of precipitation is more intense. And in order to provide additional protection from getting wet, I did not completely line the back parts with lining fabric, but in this upper part I used the same membrane fabric.

This is not at all necessary, but it seemed to me that the protection would be more reliable this way.

I sewed the back piece along the neckline, bottom and sides to the serifs, as shown in the photo.

We sew the tummy part completely, leaving a hole for turning inside out in the part where it will be sewn to the back.

To prevent the lining fabric from sticking out from under the main fabric in the future, we additionally sew a seam from the front side.

We apply the facial seam in the same way:

  • Back detail at neckline, bottom and sides to serifs.
  • We sew the tummy part completely, without touching only the hole through which we turned it inside out.

Well, the blanket for the dog is almost ready. All that remains is to sew both parts of the blanket to each other.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo of every step and didn’t show an important moment. Before sewing the parts, you need to take the “back”, and in the neck area, unfold the narrowest parts and sew them together from the wrong side. In the photo, the red dotted line shows the edges where the seam should be. Then, turn the neckline inside out and sew an additional stitch on top in the same way.

I will show this point in more detail in the video instructions.

Now let's sew the parts together. The photo below shows the whole process step by step, and the dotted lines indicate the places where the sutures are applied.

Video master class

I hope this video tutorial will make it easier for you to dress up your little butt!

Good luck to you! Take care of your pets!

Caring owners want their beloved four-legged pet to have everything they need, including a wardrobe for any weather. To do this, it is not at all necessary to buy pants, skirts, or overalls for your dog. If you have a pattern, it is quite easy to sew such clothes with your own hands, even if you only have basic skills in handling threads and a needle.

Dog fashion: whim or necessity?

Among owners of large breeds of dogs and those who do not have animals at all, you can often find people who are quite skeptical towards owners of small and medium-sized pets: they say, dress up the animals like dolls! Meanwhile, this approach is not entirely fair. Artificially bred small breeds are very cold, and in the warm season they are more susceptible to insect and tick bites than others. Therefore, dog fashion is rather a necessity rather than a whim of loving owners. The most popular and comfortable outfit for a dog is a jumpsuit, and cutting and sewing it is easy even for an ordinary person.

The fabric for overalls is selected depending on the season. If you are sewing a demi-season outfit, then the material should be:

  • ventilated (so the skin can breathe);
  • durable (then no bush branches or tall dead wood are scary);
  • waterproof (wet fabric sticking to the dog’s body is a guarantee of pneumonia).

Membrane fabric is ideal for such tasks. A thin film is glued to the fabric of such fabric. For the winter version, you will also need a lining - preferably not on a mesh basis, otherwise the hair will get into the perforations, and putting on the outfit will be painful for the dog. It is better to take viscose, satin, twill, etc. As for summer overalls, they can be sewn from thin raincoat fabric or microfiber.

A little about fasteners

A comfortable cut for a dog jumpsuit pattern is only half the success. The second part depends on the correct fastener. For fastening the following are used:

  • buttons (convenient for demi-season and summer clothes for small breeds);
  • Velcro (suitable for any season, but require additional fasteners);
  • ties (act as decorative fastenings, and only for small dogs);
  • elastic bands (the fastener is universal, since depending on the thickness it can be used for “clients” of different weight categories).

Any step-by-step instructions describing how to sew a jumpsuit for a dog with your own hands are based on the basic model, that is, without sleeves and legs.

Materials:

  • newspaper or pattern paper;
  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • textile;
  • Velcro;
  • rubber;
  • thread, needle.

Instructions:

  1. We measure the length of the dog's back (from the collar to the beginning of the tail).
  2. We measure the half-circumference of the widest part of the chest.
  3. On paper we draw a rectangle according to these measurements.
  4. In the second third we make a hole for the paws, departing from the vertical lines about 5-10 cm (depending on the size of the pet).
  5. Draw the neckline and cut out the pattern.
  6. We lay the paper on the fabric folded in half, outline and cut out, not forgetting about the allowances.
  7. Having swept away the shelves, we try them on. If necessary, we increase the armholes.
  8. We put together the details.
  9. We process the cuts with a facing.
  10. We sew on Velcro for the fastener and pull elastic bands into the armholes.

This model can be complemented with sleeves and “pants”. To do this, we cut out 4 rectangles, slightly round one narrow part, and, stitching along the edges, sew them into the armholes. We reinforce the cuffs with an elastic band.

We cut and sew clothes for Yorkies

Making your own jumpsuit patterns for a Yorkie requires special attention, since the parts to be cut out are very small. Such calculations must be especially accurate.

Materials:

  • a sheet of wallpaper with a smooth back side;
  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • textile;
  • accessories;
  • scissors;
  • thread, needle.

Instructions:

If you want the overalls to fit better, then you need to cut out the top and bottom parts separately.

Instructions:

  1. We measure the length of the backrest and mark a horizontal segment on the drawing.
  2. We make a neckline, a small transition (about 5 cm) to the armhole and the hole itself for the front paws.

  3. We decorate the back part in a semicircle to cut out the tail.

  4. We measure a segment equal to the length of the hind legs.

  5. Separately, we cut out the lower part of the shirt: draw a trapezoid, the upper base of which is equal to the distance between the paws, and the lower base is equal to the width of the sternum.
  6. Draw the desired sleeve length. Connecting the lines.

  7. We build a pattern for the inside of the pants, based on the distance between the hind legs and the length of the legs.
  8. Transfer the pattern to the fabric.

  9. We sew down the details, paying attention to the fact that part of the boy’s tummy remains open. For a girl, we sew a shirt and pants together.

Today we will tell you how to make clothes for dogs without a pattern or complicated sewing. That is, such suits, the production of which does not require a lot of time, a lot of materials, or any special skill. It would be more correct to say that we will repurpose our old clothes into overalls for dogs. However, the result will be truly remarkable. Your pet will be warm and comfortable in such clothes.

Please note that in the presented master classes we will talk about clothes for small breed dogs or suits for puppies. They are the first to need additional protection with the onset of the first cold weather. It wouldn’t hurt to hide the fur of short-legged animals who like to romp around in cold puddles.

Idea one: a sweater for a miniature breed puppy

You will be surprised, but you can make a jumpsuit with your own hands from an ordinary terry sock. To do this, we need to measure the puppy and compare it with the sock. If it “fits” into this size, then lay out the sock with the heel up, put the baby on it and mark where its paws are located. We outline future holes. To be sure, let’s check their position again using a measuring tape.

Just cut out the holes and carefully crochet them. We cut the heel, cut off the excess and sew it together. We decorate as desired.

This sweater will keep your puppy cozy and warm, and you can take him outside so he can get used to breathing fresh air.

Idea two: overalls for a dog from a children's T-shirt

We measure the length of the dog's back (from the base of the withers to the tail).

Take an old children's T-shirt or dress and set the resulting distance down from the collar.

Let's measure the circumference of your pet's chest. This number will correspond to the width of the product.

The head opening is determined by dividing the chest circumference by three. However, the more precise number depends on the size of your dog.

The standard pattern looks like this.

But you don’t need to do it, just draw on the fabric right away. If you miss, you can always trim off the excess.

Sewing is simple - just connect the side parts of the product together. You can even do this by hand, but using a machine will be safer.

Decorate the T-shirt as desired. Outfits made from denim are especially beautiful and reliable.

Idea three: a dog costume from an old sweater

We will need a sleeve from a voluminous knit sweater. We just cut it off and compare it with the size of the dog (note that the master class is designed for dogs of medium-sized breeds). The length of the future product is the length of the back + 5-7 cm.

In terms of production, it’s almost the same story as in the first version.

We measure the distance between the paws, mark the holes and cut them out. Crochet it.

Now let's measure the pet's paws and sew the corresponding sleeves. Just don't make them too narrow, otherwise your four-legged friend will be uncomfortable.

All that remains is to overcast the sleeves and overcast the hem.

Choose a sweater that is not scratchy – take care of your pet’s comfort.

We decorate as desired and confidently walk the dog in this outfit in any cold weather.

In inclement weather, people bundle up in warm, comfortable, waterproof clothing that is comfortable and in line with fashion trends. Our faithful, devoted little brothers - dogs - suffer no less than us from heat, wind, and bad weather. Being responsible for those who were taken into the family and tamed, we take care of our four-legged friends, worrying about their health and well-being. DIY dog clothes, the patterns of which are modeled taking into account the parameters of your pet, will warm you up in the cold, hide you from the rain, and highlight your pet’s stylish, fashionable “outfit”.

The quality of a dog clothing pattern largely depends on the correctness of taking measurements. Then the process of designing and modeling outfits with your own hands will require perseverance, attention and drawing skills from you. Transferring the finished pattern onto the fabric will not be difficult, and the main point at this stage will be the process of choosing the material. Don't forget about the accessories: zippers, fasteners, Velcro, finishing tapes and elastic bands are present in most models of clothing for dogs.

HOW TO TAKE MEASUREMENTS CORRECTLY

To ensure that your hand-made clothes fit your dog perfectly - without restricting movement or rubbing the skin - consider the main rules for measuring your pet:

  • All measurements are taken in a standing position.
  • In order for the parameters to be correct and the pattern to follow the contours of the dog’s body, it is necessary to take measurements in the widest places:
    • neck circumference is equal to the volume of the collar;
    • chest volume is measured directly behind the front paws;
    • The length of the back is determined by the distance from the withers to the base of the dog's tail when standing.
  • Don't forget to add 1 to 3 cm to the pattern when cutting the material: this will be seam allowances and the loose fit of the garment.

MATERIAL SELECTION

The summer heat is not the best reason to dress up your beloved dog in a variety of clothes. Give your four-legged friend the opportunity to breathe freely and not overheat. On a cool evening, cotton, knitted T-shirts and T-shirts are perfect. The spring-autumn season brings inclement, rainy weather, so waterproof bologna and raincoat fabric will be available during this time.

To keep your dog warmer, wear a jumper or sweater underneath, knitted by yourself, in the threads of which the proportion of wool or cotton should be at least 40%. Natural or artificial fur, fleece, padding polyester (as the lining of overalls) will reliably protect your pet from frost and snow. Use woolen fabrics for coats and drape for sewing outerwear patterns.

BUILDING A BASIC PATTERN FOR MODELING AND SEWING

So that every piece of clothing for dogs with your own hands, a pattern for which you find or design, fits perfectly on your four-legged friend, you will need patience and time:

  • Draw a rectangle, one side of which is equal to the length of the garment.
  • Set aside the points corresponding to your waist and chest measurements.
  • Then you need to mark the width of the back, extending the pattern line.
  • Dividing the width of the back into 2 equal parts, we get the intersection point, from which measure 1/3 of the girth of the dog’s neck.
  • By connecting the dots in a semicircle, we get the neck line.
  • Then you need to construct a shoulder section and calculate the size of the armhole for the dog’s front and hind legs.
  • When cutting out clothes with your own hands, do not forget to leave a cutout for the tail.
  • To pattern a sleeve, you will need to measure the length of each dog's paw, the volume - along the bones of the upper joint.

MODELS OF CLOTHING FOR DOGS WITH PATTERNS AND DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Clothing for dogs is not a whim or whim of glamorous young ladies. Decorative babies - toy terriers, Yorkies, chihuahuas, short-haired dachshunds, pinschers and other dog breeds are highly susceptible to weather conditions. And what can we say about the now popular Chinese crested dogs - graceful, cheerful and funny dogs, whose hair is present only on the head, ears, tail and paws, and the body is freezing.

Rain or snow, frost, strong wind can cause hypothermia in a small family pet. Warm clothing will protect you in bad weather; elegant models will emphasize the exquisitely glamorous image of the dog. Treat yourself and your little friend with a collection of clothes created with your own hands using patterns and templates. The trends of the 2015 season in the world of dog fashion remain plaid fabrics and materials with graphic prints. Do you want to create bright outfits with your own hands? Sew clothes for your favorite dog by developing a pattern and cutting the fabric according to your pet's measurements.

So, the wardrobe of any self-respecting dog - from a Pekingese to a German Shepherd - should include:

  • Overalls for snowy frosty weather.
  • A lightweight option for the off-season.
  • Waterproof suit.
  • Cape/blanket.
  • A couple of knitted jumpers and hats.

Other outfits - summer T-shirts, T-shirts, dresses, skirts - are not a necessary attribute of a dog's life. The presence of fashionable clothes in the summer wardrobe is rather due to the desire of the owners to dress up their pet. You can sew unusual exclusive styles, casual suits for walking, and elegant models with your own hands using the patterns given below. Detailed instructions will explain step by step the main points that are worth focusing on.

HOW TO SEW A JUMPSUIT FOR A YORKSHIRE TERRIER

To sew this cute, warm overall for a Yorkshire Terrier dog with your own hands, you will need basic measurements of your pet and high-quality material. Clothes are ideal for dry, cool weather. The pattern consists of 4 parts: back, front, sleeves and collar. Bright, beautiful fabric, decorative elements - frills, satin ribbons - will decorate the model. The zipper is located on the back of the garment. It is suitable for playful and capricious dogs who do not like to dress for a long time.

BADDLE FOR DACHS

This type of clothing will be worn with pleasure by dogs of the hunting breed in the spring and autumn seasons. The structural features of dachshunds have advantages when hunting, but in cold or rainy weather the paws, lower body, and ears quickly get wet and freeze. A blanket is a universal wardrobe item that provides freedom of movement. If your pet is not accustomed from childhood to wearing clothes sewn from patterns with your own hands, it will be the best option.

The pattern itself is simple, and to construct it, you need to know the length of the back to the base of the tail and the volume of the chest under the front legs. Velcro or buckle closure will help you adjust the fit. The cool season threatens dogs with hypothermia, and a lightweight blanket, hand-sewn from natural fabrics - wool, cotton, absorbs sweat well, protecting the animal from rapid hypothermia in windy weather.

STYLISH JUMPSUIT WITH A HOOD FOR CHIHUAHUA

These decorative lap dogs are representatives of a “special” caste and are also the tiniest dogs in the world. Brave, playful, they love walks, but often get cold. A warm jumpsuit, sewn with your own hands according to the pattern in the photo, will increase the time the Chihuahua spends outside, and the hood will protect it from rain and wind. A zipper on the back will help you quickly fasten your clothes, emphasizing a stylish look.

PATTERN AND KNITTING PATTERN FOR A JUMPER WITH KNOTKS

A warm, hand-knitted sweater for a dog will be an excellent clothing option in cool weather, and will also serve as a good layer under overalls in the winter. Measure the circumference of the pet's neck and body length from the withers to the tail. The first measurement will be needed to cut out the neckline, and the second will be needed to determine the length of the garment. Opt for threads containing at least 40-45% wool so that sweat is easily absorbed and the dog does not freeze during a walk.

ELEGANT DRESS FOR A SMALL DOG

Many housewives attend various events - parties, receptions - with their beloved pets. It is necessary not only for a beautiful lady, but also for her dog to look elegant, fashionable, and trendy. Airy tulle, tulle, decorated with sequins will be an excellent basis for creating an elegant dress model. Sewn with your own hands according to a pattern corresponding to the size of your little pet, decorated with decorative elements, the dress will emphasize the glamorous style of clothing, attracting everyone’s attention to the owner and her “friend.”

SCHEME FOR MANUFACTURING FOOTWEAR FOR WINTER PET

To make your own homemade slippers for your dog, you will need thick, non-slip material. When modeling the pattern, measure the size of your pet's paw: this will be the base-sole. Sew stockings made of thinner fabric to it (the pattern for the hind legs should be a few cm above the hock joint). All that remains is to sew fasteners or Velcro in two places: above the paw and along the upper edge of the shoe. The winter option involves the use of warm, waterproof material for the boot, rubberized or leather fabric for the sole.

WARM DOUBLE-SIDED JUMPSUIT FOR LARGE BREEDS DOG

A hand-sewn warm jumpsuit will help protect your four-legged friend from wind, cold, rain or snow. The winter version of the pattern provides for a warm top layer of fabric (drape, cashmere) and internal insulation (fur, fleece, flannel). The pattern is convenient because, depending on the weather conditions, the overalls are worn with one or the other side out.

VIDEO TUTORIALS OF TAILORING CLOTHES FOR DOGS FOR BEGINNERS

Designer collections of clothing for pets, fashionable styles and trends, annual shows are not fiction at all. More and more pet stores offer pet owners a varied selection of clothing for all occasions. Sometimes the quality of the presented collections is far from ideal, and standard sizes, colors, and cuts do not impress dog and cat owners. Sew or knit exclusive models with your own hands, investing great love and tenderness for the dog.

Standard patterns, which can be easily found on the Internet, will help speed up the modeling process. Then “adjust” the pattern to the size of your pet. With your own hands you can create clothes for dogs worthy of the title of “masterpieces of high fashion”: light T-shirts and blankets, warm winter overalls and elegant sweaters. By watching our video tutorials, you will learn all about the intricacies of designing, sewing or knitting clothes with your own hands for your four-legged friends.

The time has long passed when clothing for animals was perceived as something unnecessary and preventing dogs and cats from living comfortably. Now no one doubts the need for such things, because modern clothing for pets is, first of all, comfort and the performance of certain functions - protecting the animal from frost, wind, moisture, dirt, dust, ticks and burrs and, of course, the sun rays.

TECHNOLOGY:

1. Measure the length of the dog’s back (from the collar to the root of the tail) - points (Z-K);
2. Divide this length by 8 (example: 40 cm: 8 = 5 cm) - we get the side of one cell in cm (mm);
3. Draw a sheet of paper into cells with the corresponding side, according to the diagram;
4. Mark “control points (crosses);
5. Connect them together;
6. We cut out two such parts (M-F-Z-K-D-I-L-G-B-N); Attention! On the top side of the overalls (Z-A-B-K) add 3 cm.
7. Next, we cut out two parts - (F-B-N-M) and two parts - (G-D-I-L). These will be the inside of the trouser legs. We sew each of the halves of the pattern with the inner sides of the trouser legs;
8. Next, measure the volume of the chest - (B-D) and the volume of the "waist" - (A-B);
9. Subtract the difference in these places between the real volumes of the dog and the flat image;
10. This difference is the width of the insert on the belly (between the two halves of the overalls)

3:2265

11. Assembling the overalls into a single whole. We grind the insert in several steps:

3:149

a. We start with the neck. We extend it to the armpit (the end of the front leg) and, having secured it, break the thread.
b. We begin to sew the “underbelly”, add it to the groin (the beginning of the back leg), fasten and break the thread.
c. We begin to stitch the insert to the back leg to its middle (for bitches).

3:696

d. For male dogs, cut out the fly on the insert. The insert itself is longer than for bitches. Sewn from the neck to the tail hole (D-G-B-G). A dart is made on the belly side to ensure a tight fit of the overalls on the belly. The fly is finished with bias tape. (You can insert an elastic band, but it will be more rough. If you insert an elastic band, you do not need to make a dart).
12. Sew in a zipper. It can be detachable, or it can be one-piece.
13. Next, we trim the tail part of the overalls with bias tape, having previously made darts according to the figure, or you can do it without darts - with an elastic band inserted inside the tape.
14. We finish the neck part like the tail part. You can do a stand. On one side we make a loop, on the other we sew a button. You can sew on Velcro, you can insert a cord-tie.
15. We hem the trouser legs according to the dog’s height. We insert the elastic bands down. Attention! There should be a slight slouch at the bottom of the shalwar style pants to allow the dog to move comfortably!
16. The overalls are ready.
