Do-it-yourself thread pompom: a step-by-step master class

This master class is quite simple to perform, any novice craftswoman can do it.

Materials and tools

  • Cardboard.
  • Compass.
  • Pencil.
  • Scissors.
  • Ruler.
  • Threads.

The process of making a pom-pom from threads with your own hands step by step

  • It is necessary to make a cardboard blank for the pompom. To do this, they take a compass, apply it to a ruler and measure 1.5 cm. Then a compass needle is placed on thick cardboard and a circle with a diameter of 3 cm is drawn. This circle is circled with a red pencil so that it can be better seen.
  • To make a pompom with a diameter of 10 cm, you need to take a compass, attach it to a ruler, measure 5 cm, add 1.5 cm (radius of the red circle). The result will be 6.5 cm. The compass needle is placed in the center of the red circle and a new circle with a diameter of 6.5 cm is drawn. If you measure with a ruler from the center to the pink line, you get 1.5 cm. And from the pink line to the edge of the circle - 5 cm.
  • Take a pencil and a ruler. The ruler is applied to the pink line of the circle and a perpendicular line is drawn to the outer border of the large circle. Parallel to this line, stepping aside a few mm, draw another line.

  • Both parallel lines and the border of the outer circle are outlined with a blue pencil for clarity, after which this blank is cut out with scissors.
  • To create a pompom, you will need two such blanks, therefore, using this scheme, cut out the second blank from cardboard.
  • When both blanks are ready, they are laid one on top of the other, the threads are taken from which the pom-pom will be made, the tail of the thread is left and the yarn continues to be wound on the blank. A convenient way would be to count the number of windings so that the pompoms are the same if several pieces are made.
  • Pompons can be made in one color. If you need to make it two-color, then one part of the workpiece is wound in one color, and the second part is wound in another color. If you need to make a two-color pom-pom so that the colors of the threads are mixed, then the bottom layer of the winding must be made in one color, and the top layer must be made in another color. This winding procedure must be repeated several times.
  • A beautiful version of pompoms will turn out if you visually divide the blank into several segments. Each of them is wrapped in different colors. In this case, the finished pom-pom will look like tufts in different places in different colors.
  • In order for the pompom to turn out to be sufficiently magnificent, the workpiece should be wound with threads until the diameter of the core is halved. To make the pompom very lush, the threads are wound around the workpiece in such a way until the center of the diameter becomes very small.

  • It should be borne in mind that the more windings are made on the workpiece, the heavier the pompom becomes.
  • If you need a small and light pom-pom, then standard winding will be enough.
  • The best option for winding threads on a workpiece is one where the diameter of the inner hole is 1.5 cm. In this case, the pompom will not be heavy and voluminous.
  • After the workpiece is wrapped with threads, the rest of the thread can be cut off. If the yarn from which the pom-pom is made is not slippery, then it is necessary to use it to fasten the center. This will require 60 cm of yarn.
  • If the yarn slips a little, then in order to keep the center of the pom-pom well, you need to take another yarn, almost the same tone as the previous one, which is completely non-slip. This yarn will not be visible because it will be hidden deep in the pompom.
  • One end of the auxiliary thread is placed between two blank cartons on one side, and the other end of the thread is placed between blank cartons on the other side. Scissors cut the wound threads in half in a circle, holding the workpiece with the other hand and alternately penetrating the threads deep into the workpiece. The two ends of the auxiliary thread are tied together. The thread must be tightened very tightly, but make sure that it does not break.
  • Both blanks are unfolded in such a way that the cuts do not coincide with each other, but are directed in different directions. Both edges of the auxiliary thread begin to wind around the base. One end is wound clockwise and the other end counterclockwise. After that, a strong knot is made again. After that, both cardboard blanks can be removed. With the help of the ponytails that were formed during fixing, you can attach the pompom to the product.

These pom poms are perfect for a hat. Using the video, you can attach it to any product and recreate a pompom of any complexity. Thanks to this technique, you can make not only a pom-pom for a knitted item, but also a wonderful decorative element.

Pompoms of different sizes are an indispensable thing in knitting. I use them to decorate children's and adult things, to give a knitted product a finished look. Cute balls of thread can be seen not only on hats and scarves: they decorate sweaters, coats, leggings, bags and even rugs. There are several different ways to create pom poms, from simple to more complex.

So, how to make a yarn pom pom? Just! Join us and you will definitely succeed!

First way. Pompoms using cardboard templates.

The best result is obtained when making pom-poms using two elementary cardboard templates. In this case, the product is very lush and neat.

To make a pom-pom in this way, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • a sheet of thick cardboard;
  • a simple pencil and a compass;
  • suitable threads;
  • a needle with a large eye;
  • small scissors (you can manicure).

Operating procedure:

Using a compass, draw two identical circles of the desired diameter on a sheet of white cardboard. Draw another small circle in the center of each. Cut out both pieces. If there was no compass at home, then you can use improvised items (cups, saucers, lids, etc.).

Then make a loop from a piece of thread and put it on top of one of the parts, cover it with a second cardboard circle on top, aligning their edges.

Pass a long thread through the needle and start wrapping it around both circles together, holding the templates with your hand so that the loop clamped inside them does not slip out. The more layers of thread you wind, the more magnificent and denser the pompom will be.

When the templates are completely wrapped, use nail scissors to cut the threads along the outer edge, after which, slightly pushing the circles apart, tightly tie the thread in the middle so that the pompom does not fall apart. Only then can the templates be removed.

The second way. I wound the thread around my fingers.

This method is the fastest. It will come in handy when there are no auxiliary tools at hand with which to make a pompom.

Take a ball and wind a few turns of thread around the four fingers of your hand. Then tie a bunch of threads in the middle, without removing them from your fingers. The inconvenience of this method lies in the fact that, without outside help, it is problematic to tightly tie the threads wound around the hand.

The third way. With the back of a chair.

This method is good when you need to make a lot of pompoms in a short time. Its essence is that first a “sausage” is made from the threads, which is then cut into pieces.

This can be done in the following way.

Wind the threads around the back of the chair, carefully remove and tie the resulting thread "sausage" with pieces of thread, in several places at the same distance. Then, in the gaps between the bundles in the center, cut the threads with scissors and get a lot of pompoms.

Or wrap the threads around the thin legs of the chair, make the required number of dressings, and only then remove and cut.

Fourth way. Make pom poms with a fork.

It is suitable for making small pom-poms.

In this case, for work, in addition to threads and scissors, you will also need an ordinary table fork. Wind the threads around it and tie the bundle in the middle (as in the case of winding it on your fingers). Then cut the threads around the edges and fluff the pompom. Makes cute little pom poms.

Fifth way. We make simple brushes.

In addition to round pompoms, thread tassels can often be found in products. The process of creating them is extremely simple.

A bunch of threads, the length of which is equal to two lengths of the finished pom-pom, tie with a thread in the middle. Then fold it in half and, stepping back from the top of 1 cm, make several turns of thread around the folded bundle, the ends of which are firmly tied and hidden inside the pompom. Then trim the edges of the threads in the bundle with scissors so that the product has a neat appearance.

Do not forget that pompoms can be not only from any one color, but also multi-colored! Create, fantasize and decorate your knitwear or make toys out of it.

Happy needlework!

In today's master class, we will consider several options and ways to create an accessory, namely, we will make a pom-pom from threads quickly and simply with our own hands, describing in an interesting and step-by-step manner all the steps in the work.

You can make a pompom in several ways, both with the help of improvised materials, and with the help of special ones that are sold in needlework stores. With the help of special tools, it is not always possible to make a pompom of the required shape or size. You also need to immediately take into account that not a single craftswoman will immediately succeed in a perfectly even pompom, and it will definitely need to be trimmed with scissors.

A pom-pom made of thread is perfect for decorating a hat or children's things. Well, let's start creating it, shall we?

We make pompoms from threads with our own hands step by step based on a cardboard circle template

In order to make a pom pom, you will need the following materials:

  • Threads;
  • Needle (it is advisable to take a large one with a large eye, a needle for threading an elastic band is perfect);
  • Cardboard (for templates).

First of all, it is necessary to prepare templates for the future product. It is necessary to prepare two identical circles from cardboard, and then cut out the core in the center so that the width of the rim, and in the future the radius of the pompom, is about 0.5-0.7 cm.

We thread the needle, it is possible in two layers. We apply two blanks to each other and begin to wrap the paper blanks with threads. The thread should not be too tight, but not hang. We wrap in one layer, then the next, until the thread runs out. We make enough layers so that this is enough for a lush pompom. You can make multi-colored layers, therefore, the pompom will be colored. When changing the thread, the one that has run out should not be cut off from the workpiece to zero, in the future, all excess length of the threads will be cut off.

We continue to wind the threads until the necessary density of the threads located on the workpiece is felt. We fill the blank with threads until the empty center of the circle is completely closed, then the pompom will definitely be tight and dense, which means fluffy.

The next step is to cut the threads along the edge of the circle between the cardboard blanks. We cut evenly so that the length of the threads is the same. Most likely, it will not work to cut all the strings at once, we do it gradually, and then we get such a pompom blank.

Now let's start fixing the pom-pom. Cardboard needs to be pushed a little and tie the center between the paper blanks with a thread. The main thing is not to move from the middle. After that, the templates can be removed. We cut them and carefully pull them out. The pompom is almost ready, but its circumference is not even. We trim the length of the threads with scissors. It is better to grab a little bit, so as not to suddenly cut off the excess. We get such a wonderful pompom.

Let's make a pom-pom from threads based on a rectangular cardboard template

To create a rectangular cardboard template you will need:

  • Thick cardboard;
  • Sharp scissors;
  • Awl;
  • Ruler;
  • Simple pencil.

We take cardboard and cut out two rectangles from it according to the drawing shown below.

The width of the rectangle is the diameter of the future pom-pom + 1 cm. The length can be the same for pom-poms of different diameters, for example 15 cm. It is necessary to make a puncture in the center of the rectangle with an awl and cut the template from one side to the puncture. The width of the cut should not exceed 2-3 cm. On the other hand, the punctures should be approximately 5-7 mm from the edge of the cardboard, we also cut the cardboard to the hole. The pom-pom is ready.

Next, we wind the threads, we try to do it evenly, it is not necessary to tighten it too much. When the threads are wound, they must be shifted onto a workpiece with a large cut. The next step is to tighten the wound threads, this must be done as tight and strong as possible. Next, the threads need to be carefully cut. We place the scissors between the cardboard blanks and cut the threads. After this step, remove the pompom from the cardboard blank and straighten it. We trim the excess threads with scissors and get the desired shape. The main thing is to be patient and proceed with caution.

Pompoms are not difficult to make, you just need to choose the right color of thread, depending on the color of the clothes or textiles, the decoration of which it will become.

A fluffy pompom is a traditional decoration for many models of knitted hats. Therefore, when a knitter starts making such a product, she should ask in advance how to make a bubo on a hat.

Fortunately, it's not difficult at all. If the necessary materials are available, a craftswoman with any, even insignificant, experience in knitting will be able to master the work.

What will be required

This article will describe the most common and simple ways to make a bubo from threads for a hat. The principle of forming a pom-pom is the same for all methods, only the method of work and the materials used differ.

Yarn to create a fluffy decoration, you can take absolutely any. Of course, if you want the color and texture of the material to match the one used to knit the hat, then this thread should be taken. However, in order to save money or to give a decorative effect, you can make a pom-pom from a completely different material.

Before you make a bubo on a hat, you need to think about its color and size. Headdresses with one large bubo at the top look extremely attractive, but many products (especially for children) provide for the placement of several small elements.

We offer you a master class "How to make a bubo". This will require:

  • yarn;
  • thick cardboard;
  • scissors;
  • knitting needle (or just with a wide eye).

Sequencing

The most common way to create pom poms is to wind yarn around cardboard circles. Doing this is quite easy.

  1. Before making a bubo on a hat, you should draw a circle on cardboard, the size of which should be 25-30% larger than the planned diameter of the pompom. To get the correct circle, use a compass or circle an object of a suitable shape.
  2. Draw a smaller one inside the big circle. You should follow the comparison of the centers of the two circles, otherwise the product will be asymmetric. Note that the wider the inner circle, the fuller the pom-pom will come out. However, if the hole is too wide, the shape of the product will become oval.
  3. Cut out two circles.
  4. Having compared two identical cardboard parts, we begin to wind yarn around them. For convenience, you can make a cut passing to the inner circle. The thread should be wound evenly, avoiding the formation of areas with excessive compaction or bald spots.
  5. Continue these steps until the inner circle is completely filled with yarn. When it becomes difficult to wind it, you can use a needle to continue filling.
  6. Carefully cut the wound threads. To do this, bring the tip of the scissors under all layers of yarn between two cardboard parts and cut along the circumference.
  7. Now the pom-pom looks like a large number of short pieces of thread with cardboard parts in the center. Spread the circles a little in different directions and tightly tie the segments with one strong thread.

That's the whole algorithm that describes how to make a bubo from threads for a hat. Cut the finished decoration from all sides, giving the desired shape, and fix it on a knitted product.

Process features

When working with several colors of yarn, keep in mind that the last wound layers form the center of the pompom. Therefore, the description of how to make a bubo on a hat with an even distribution of several colors will consist in alternating layers.

Alternatively, you can use the same method used to make the pom-pom in the photo above: joining the threads of two colors while winding on cardboard and achieving a melange effect.

Use will allow you to complete the decoration faster, and it will look more fluffy.

Smaller pom poms

As mentioned above, small and medium buboes are performed in almost the same way as large ones. In contrast to the method with winding yarn on cardboard parts, turns formed with fingers can be used.

As you can see in the photo, the thread is wound around an even number of fingers (two or four). Then they intercept in the middle with a strong tie and remove the resulting loops.

At the next stage, they need to be cut and trimmed from all sides. Before making a pompom (bubo) on a hat using this method, it should be noted that it is relatively expensive. The resulting segments of threads come out very different in length, and they have to be significantly shortened. However, the undoubted advantage is the volume of the finished pompom.

Alternative ways to create buboes

Using a yarn fork will help you make very small pompoms. This method is quick and easy, since the resulting turns will be almost the same size.

To make a large number of identical elements, you can use a method that is perfectly illustrated by the following image.

The yarn chosen for the pompoms is wound around the legs of an inverted chair, tied in several places and cut in succession. The volume of finished jewelry depends on the number of wound layers.

The use of pompoms is not limited to sewing on hats. They are widely used for decorating mittens, scarves, sweaters, making soft toys or interior items. Rugs made of buboes look very original.

To make a pompom from yarn for a hat, no special tools are needed. True, there are special devices for sale, but not all of them are convenient. And are they needed? If you need to quickly make pompoms from yarn in production quantities, perhaps plastic half circles will come in handy. In all other cases, a good old homemade device consisting of two cardboard rings is sufficient. And our step-by-step instructions will allow you to repeat the weight process quickly, easily and without annoying mistakes.

Size calculation - how to make a large pom-pom out of yarn?

The size of the pom-pom depends on the width of the ring on which we will form the winding of yarn. The ring should be made slightly smaller than the desired size of the pom-pom, since the thickness of the winding will be added, which will adjust the size of the ball upwards.

Therefore, all that is needed to make a large pompom for a hat is to correctly calculate the width of the cardboard winding ring.

How to make a pompom on a yarn hat: job description

First, cut out two cardboard rings. To draw them, it is convenient to use a compass. And here we are faced with a dilemma.

Pompoms come out the neater, the smaller the inner diameter of the ring. But the smaller this diameter, the smaller the size of the coil will pass into it. And to make a pom-pom out of yarn - this very yarn will take a lot, usually at least 25-30 g! What to do?

There are two options here. Or make a slot in the ring, and wind threads through it (see photo below - the cut is indicated by a red line). Or wind the pom-pom yarn into small balls, which are passed through the hole of the uncut ring. We chose the second option and wound three small balls..

We take a ball and carefully wind the yarn onto a cardboard blank.

We fix the tip with several turns so that it does not unwind.

We continue to walk along the perimeter of the ring, laying the threads one by one. You can, of course, wind randomly, but the finished yarn pom-pom in this case will be less accurate. This is only one row of winding.

And you need to do several rows. The larger the pom-pom, the more rows of winding will be needed. This is how the winding for a pompom with a diameter of 10 cm looked like.

We finished winding - and prepared a thread of the same color in 3-4 additions. We take a longer one, so that we can then tie the finished pompom to a hat from the same yarn.

We spread the winding threads a little so that the cardboard base is visible, and we insert the blade of the open scissors between the cardboard circles. Carefully cut the yarn, continuing to hold one part of the blade between the circles. We keep the winding all this time on the table, if necessary, we press the yarn to the table with the palm of our hand.

The most crucial moment: between the cardboard circles we lay our thread folded in several layers and cross the ends so as to tighten the winding threads.

We pull the tips in opposite directions, watching how the hole narrows.

Get it like this.

Between the cardboard circles, we again tie the ends into a knot several times to fix the cut threads well. It is advisable to wrap our bundle with a long thread a couple more times and again tie the ends in a knot.

Now the cardboard circles can be torn, cut, or, if possible, simply removed, and the finished yarn pom-pom can be taken by the long ends of the strapping and shaken well.

Sometimes you need to trim the pom-pom with sharp scissors, giving it the perfect ball shape.

And, of course, tie or sew to the finished hat as soon as possible!
