How to make big pompoms. Wound, cut, tied! Or our first thread pompoms

Making pom poms is fun and easy. There is always somewhere to put the leftover threads left over from knitting. Children enjoy playing with these soft, pleasant-to-touch balls. A child aged 7-9 years can do them.

Stores currently sell various devices for creating pompoms. But you can also do it the old tried and tested way - using two rings cut out of cardboard.

For pompoms, you can use any thread, but wool or synthetic ones are best. Linen and cotton threads make the pom-pom heavy and doesn’t fluff well. Thick threads will produce a more embossed pom-pom, and thin threads will produce a fluffier one.

When I first started making these soft balls, it seemed to me that it was very difficult and tedious to thread the thread into such a small hole. But it's not all that scary.

To start, you don’t need as much thread as you might think. And then be sure to fold the threads in several folds: 4, 8, 12, depending on the thickness of the thread. As a result, you will get a skein (skein) about 2 meters long. If necessary, you can take more thread.

How to make a pompom from threads

Cut out two rings from cardboard. The outer radius is 3 cm, the inner radius is 1.5 cm. Buy a compass (a goat’s leg is more convenient), teach your child how to use this useful tool, and at the same time explain how the radius of a circle differs from the diameter.

We cut the wool into 4-8 threads, about 2 meters long

We connect two cardboard rings together. We hold the beginning of the thread tightly with one hand, and with the other we begin to tightly wrap the ring in a circle.

You can first secure the threads to the ring using a loop. Fold the threads in half and insert the rings into the holes. Pass the loose ends through the resulting loop and tighten.

We wind the thread around the ring. It is convenient to use a crochet hook to pull the thread through the hole. We wind the threads until the hole closes. The more winding, the more magnificent the pompom.

Using scissors, cut the threads along the outer edge of the rings.

Spread the ring a little and tie the pompom with thread. It is convenient to wrap the tying thread around the pompom several times and then tie it.

Remove the rings and shake the pompom so that the threads fluff up. If necessary, trim it with scissors.

The pompom is ready.

How to make a multi-colored pompom

To make a multi-colored pompom, you need to collect several threads of matching colors in a skein. Then we do the same as a regular pompom.

Pompom made from halves of different colors

We wrap one part of the ring with a thread of one color, the other with a thread of a different color.

Pompom with a spot of a different color

We wind a piece of thread of an alternative color around the ring.

Then we take the main color and wind it further, to the end, closing the winding from the first thread.

In order to decorate your favorite thing, you can use handmade work. A thread pompom will perfectly complement any item and will be an excellent decoration and design solution in the interior. The work will require the simplest available materials, and the beauty of the finished work will amaze with its unusualness.

Do-it-yourself thread pompom: step-by-step master class

This master class is quite simple to perform; any beginning craftswoman can do it.

Materials and tools

  • Cardboard.
  • Compass.
  • Pencil.
  • Scissors.
  • Ruler.
  • Threads.

The process of making a pompom from threads with your own hands step by step

  • You need to make a cardboard blank for the pompom. To do this, take a compass, apply it to a ruler and measure 1.5 cm. Next, install a compass needle on thick cardboard and draw a circle with a diameter of 3 cm. This circle is outlined with a red pencil so that it is better visible.
  • To make a pompom with a diameter of 10 cm, you need to take a compass, apply it to a ruler, measure 5 cm, add 1.5 cm (the radius of the red circle). The result will be 6.5 cm. Place the compass needle in the center of the red circle and draw a new circle with a diameter of 6.5 cm. If you measure with a ruler from the center to the pink line, you will get 1.5 cm. And from the pink line to the edge of the circle - 5 cm.
  • Take a pencil and a ruler. The ruler is applied to the pink line of the circle and a perpendicular line is drawn to the outer boundary of the large circle. Parallel to this line, stepping back a few mm, draw another line.

  • Both parallel lines and the border of the outer circle are outlined with a blue pencil for clarity, after which this blank is cut out with scissors.
  • To create a pompom, you will need two such blanks, therefore, using this diagram, cut out the second blank from cardboard.
  • When both blanks are ready, they are placed one on top of the other, the threads from which the pompom will be made are taken, the tail of the thread is left and the yarn continues to be wound around the blank. A convenient way is to count the number of windings so that the pompoms are the same if several of them are made.
  • The pompom can be made in one color. If you need to make it two-color, then one part of the workpiece is wound in one color, and the second part is wound in a different color. If you need to make a two-color pompom so that the colors of the threads are mixed, then the bottom layer of winding should be made in one color, and the top layer should be made in a different color. This winding procedure must be repeated several times.
  • A beautiful version of pom-poms will be obtained if you visually divide the workpiece into several segments. Each of them is wound in different colors. In this case, the finished pompom will look like bunches of different colors in different places.
  • In order for the pompom to be sufficiently fluffy, the workpiece should be wound with threads until the diameter of the core is halved. To make the pompom very fluffy, the threads are wound around the workpiece in such a way until the center of the diameter becomes very small.

  • It should be borne in mind that the more windings are made on the workpiece, the heavier the pompom becomes.
  • If you need a small and lightweight pompom, then standard winding will be enough.
  • The optimal option for winding threads on a workpiece would be one where the diameter of the internal hole is 1.5 cm. In this case, the pompom will be both light and voluminous.
  • After the workpiece is wrapped with threads, the remainder of the thread can be trimmed. If the yarn from which the pompom is made is not slippery, then you need to use it to fasten the center. This will require 60 cm of yarn.
  • If the yarn slips a little, then in order for the center of the pompom to hold well, you need to take another yarn, almost the same color as the previous one, which is completely non-slip. This yarn will not be visible because it will be hidden deep in the pom pom.
  • One end of the auxiliary thread is placed between two blank cardboards on one side, and the second end of the thread is placed between the blank cardboards on the other side. Using scissors, cut the wound threads in half in a circle, holding the workpiece with the other hand and alternately threading the threads deep into the workpiece. The two ends of the auxiliary thread are tied together. The thread must be tightened very tightly, but make sure that it does not break.
  • Both blanks are unfolded in such a way that the cuts do not coincide with each other, but are directed in different directions. Both edges of the auxiliary thread begin to wind around the base. One end is wound clockwise, and the other end counterclockwise. After this, a strong knot is made again. After this, both cardboard blanks can be removed. Using the tails that formed during fastening, you can attach the pompom to the product.

These pompoms are perfect for a hat. Using the video, you can attach it to any product and recreate a pompom of any complexity. Thanks to this technique, you can make not only a pompom for a knitted item, but also a wonderful decorative element.

We cut out a square from thick cardboard, the side of which will be slightly larger than the diameter of the desired pompom. Cut a square piece of cardboard in the middle, approximately just below the center point. Next, cut a piece of yarn 30 cm long and insert it into the cut so that both ends of the yarn are the same size.

We begin to wrap the yarn around the cardboard, changing its colors as desired. If your pom pom is going to be around 6.5cm in diameter, you should wrap the yarn around 100 times around the cardboard. If the pompom has a large diameter, you need to make more turns of yarn; accordingly, there should be fewer turns of yarn if the pompom is smaller. Now we cut the yarn.

We tightly wrap the piece of yarn that will hang from the gap in the cardboard base around the turns of yarn, and also tighten the fabric. After this action, we cut the thread turns and use scissors to trim the pompom, giving it the shape of a ball.

1. Cut out two rings from cardboard.

2. Place the rings on top of each other and wrap them tightly with thread.

3. Cut the threads along the fold.

4. Move the cardboards apart.

5. We tie the middle of the cardboard with thread.

6. Cut the rings and remove them.

Let's look at the classic and most common option for making a regular round pompom. Initially, you need to cut out a blank from cardboard that will be equal to the diameters of two circles from the product you have planned, plus about 1.5 cm. Next, we cut out the center of each circle, which is approximately one third of the diameter.

At the next stage, we place the resulting rings on top of each other. And as evenly and carefully as possible, we wind the yarn onto the cardboard ring until the side of the workpiece that is located towards the center is completely filled, and the pompom will be fluffier and denser, the more the center of the cardboard circle is filled.

The next step is to push the tip of the scissors through the wound yarn between two cardboard circles, then carefully cut the yarn, holding it carefully, but at the same time, without moving the yarn from the cardboard. We pass a thread between two circles of cardboard and tie the yarn that is on the cardboard into a fairly tight knot; the long ends can remain - later they can be used to make a pompom mount for your product.

After all the threads are tied, remove the cardboard, first making a small cut on the edge of the circle. Using scissors, carefully trim the pompom - and you're done.

If the number of threads wound on the rings is insufficient, that is, the inner hole of the cardboard circle remains unfilled, then your pompom may not be quite spherical in shape. And its diameter may be less than calculated. If a sufficiently thick skein of yarn was taken to make a pompom, it should be divided into several balls of such a diameter that they fit into the inner hole of the ring without any problems. The ends of the yarn can also be trimmed with scissors along the outer cut of the ring before the circles are removed. In order for a round pompom to take on an oval shape, it can be “trimmed” to imitate the desired shape. Or you can cut out oval patterns instead of round ones.

Making a pompom tassel

We take a piece of thick cardboard and cut out a rectangle from it, the size of which will be slightly longer than the brush you need, and about 10 cm wide. Along the narrow side of the rectangle along it we place a cord or thread, folded several times, on which our brush will be held. Next, we wrap the yarn around the long side of the rectangle, wrapping our cord to the base. Moreover, the more thread is wound onto the base, the more voluminous the brush will be.

Next, tighten the thread that is laid along the narrow side of the cardboard. Using scissors, cut the wound yarn opposite the knot at the end. Then we cut a piece of yarn about 30 cm long and wrap it tightly around the tassel two or three times just below the knot, about 2.5 cm, then tie it securely. We thread the ends of this piece of yarn into a needle and hide it inside the tassel itself. All that remains is to shake the brush and trim off the uneven ends.

The pompom tassel can be sewn tightly to the product, or you can make a tassel on a cord without cutting off the thread that holds the pompom itself together. You can also decorate the tassel, for example, with a large bead. To do this, in the direction from bottom to top, you need to stretch the brush through a bead of the appropriate size.

Often hats, scarves and children's clothing are decorated with various funny pom-poms. But pompoms can be used not only to decorate clothes; you can use pompoms to create different and amazing crafts with your own hands.

Any knitting yarn is useful for making pompoms. You can use new yarn or leftover yarn, yarn from an old item unraveled, boucle yarn, fleecy yarn, smooth yarn, etc. The pompoms always turn out soft, fluffy and fun!

In addition to yarn, you will need patterns, which you can make yourself from cardboard. The size of the resulting pompom will depend on the size of the pattern.

To make it easier to cut out the inner circle (this will be especially useful when making small pompoms), you can cut it along the line.

We take two templates (patterns) of the same size and put them together with cuts in different directions.

We take a thread (it is better to take a thread no more than 2 m long) and insert it into a needle. We twist the templates in one direction using a needle, completely filling the hole in the template.

You will need several threads. At the beginning of work, secure the tip of the thread with the first two turns. After the first thread ends, take the second thread and insert it into the needle. The end of the first thread and the beginning of the second are secured with the first two turns of the second thread. Thus, we wind the required number of threads onto the template.

Carefully cut the threads along the edge of the template with the tips of scissors.

We measure out approximately 30 cm of yarn. We move the templates apart and firmly tie the bundle of threads between the templates with two knots. The ends of the threads can be carefully trimmed, or they can be left for further assembly of the craft. The pompom is ready.

We remove the patterns.

Shake it. Trim any protruding threads.

From pompoms you can make a chicken, a bear, a pig, and various types. This white pompom can be used to make a New Year's craft: Snowman.

Pompoms of different sizes are an indispensable thing in knitting. I use them to decorate children's and adult items, to give a knitted product a finished look. Cute balls of thread can be seen not only on hats and scarves: they decorate sweaters, coats, leg warmers, bags and even rugs. There are several different ways to create pom poms, from simple to more complex.

So, how to make a pompom from threads? Just! Join us and you will definitely succeed!

First way. Pom poms using cardboard templates.

The best results are obtained when making pom-poms using two elementary cardboard templates. In this case, the product turns out to be very lush and neat.

To make a pompom in this way you will need the following materials and tools:

  • a sheet of thick cardboard;
  • a simple pencil and a compass;
  • suitable threads;
  • needle with a large eye;
  • small scissors (can be manicure scissors).

Operating procedure:

On a sheet of white cardboard, using a compass, draw two identical circles of the desired diameter. Draw another small circle in the center of each. Cut out both pieces. If you don’t have a compass at home, you can use improvised objects (cups, saucers, lids, etc.).

Then make a loop from a piece of thread and place it on top of one of the parts, cover it with a second cardboard circle, aligning their edges.

Thread a long thread through a needle and begin to wrap both circles together, holding the templates with your hand so that the loop clamped inside does not slip out. The more layers of thread you wind, the more magnificent and dense the pompom will be.

When the templates are completely wrapped, use nail scissors to cut the threads along the outer edge, after which, slightly spreading the circles to the sides, tie the thread tightly in the middle so that the pompom does not fall apart. Only after this can the templates be removed.

Second way. Wrap the thread around your fingers.

This method is the fastest. It will come in handy when you don’t have any auxiliary tools on hand to make a pom-pom.

Take a ball and wind several turns of thread around the four fingers of your hand. Then tie a bunch of threads in the middle without removing them from your fingers. The inconvenience of this method is that without outside help it is problematic to tightly tie the threads wound around your hand.

Third way. Using the back of a chair.

This method is good when you need to make a lot of pompoms in a short time. Its essence is that first a “sausage” is made from threads, which is then cut into pieces.

You can do this as follows.

Wind the threads around the back of the chair, carefully remove it and tie the resulting thread “sausage” with pieces of thread in several places at the same distance. Then, in the spaces between the bundles in the center, cut the threads with scissors and get a lot of pompoms.

Or wrap the threads around the thin legs of a chair, make the required number of dressings, and only then remove and cut.

Fourth way. Make pompoms using a fork.

It is suitable for making small pompoms.

In this case, in addition to thread and scissors, you will also need a regular table fork. Wind the threads around it and tie the bundle in the middle (as in the case of wrapping it around your fingers). Then cut the threads along the edges and fluff the pompom. Makes cute little pompoms.

Fifth way. Making simple tassels.

In addition to round pompoms, you can often find thread tassels in products. The process of creating them is extremely simple.

Tie a bunch of threads, the length of which is equal to two lengths of the finished pompom, with thread in the middle. Then fold it in half and, stepping back 1 cm from the top, make several turns of thread around the folded bundle, tie the ends tightly and hide inside the pompom. Then use scissors to trim the edges of the threads in the bundle so that the product has a neat appearance.

Don't forget that pompoms can be not only one color, but also multi-colored! Get creative, imagine and decorate your knitted items or make toys from them.
