How to make tiki from felt. We decorate the Christmas tree with hand-made soft toys made of felt. How to sew a felt toy

Those ignorant in this matter may think that it is impossible to create something beautiful or original from this material. In fact, felt is an ideal “raw material” for making toys. There are dozens of workshops on sewing Christmas tree decorations from felt.

Making a cute Christmas decoration is not as difficult as it might seem at first. In fact, patterns and patterns are so simple that even a novice needlewoman can deal with them.

From felt, you can sew not only hanging decorations for the Christmas tree, but also a gift for a loved one. You will see - he will definitely appreciate your efforts!

Benefits of felt toys

A gift, however, is not only a gift, but in general something made with your own hands, is already a value. To create beauty, to make your loved one happier, to surprise others - you do not need to spend a lot of money. It has been proven that things created by oneself are the most expensive gift. So why not make this gift out of felt? This is a very flexible and plastic material from which you can create anything and such a product will be colorful and extraordinary.

However, this is not the only advantage of felt toys. Many young parents will be happy to discover that felt toys cannot break, like glass ones, for example, and therefore there is no need to constantly monitor how the baby does not overturn the Christmas tree and cut himself on broken Christmas balls. By the way, the same goes for cat owners.

Felt toys can be stored for years. They will not fade, will not fade, will not lose their uniqueness, will not go out of fashion. A Christmas tree decorated with hand-sewn toys always looks very elegant. And you can be sure that no one else will have such a Christmas tree.

Well, and, perhaps, the most important plus of felt New Year's toys is that they cost, compared to glass ones, a penny. If you don't like the toy, you can just throw it away or remake it, and you won't regret the money spent.

It is not known exactly when felt was invented. According to scientists, this material already existed in the 18th century. Several felt products were found by experts in the Altai Mountains and Siberia. Local residents used this material to decorate garments and household items.

We sew a toy ourselves

You have finally decided to make Christmas decorations with your own hands. Even without sewing experience and skills in working with patterns and patterns, you can create a unique little thing in a couple of hours that will become a highlight in decorating a New Year tree. First you need to decide what exactly you will create: pick up patterns of figures that seem most interesting to you. You can create anything from thick felt sheets: hanging boots, snowflakes, Christmas trees, balls, funny images of animals, and, of course, the symbol of the upcoming 2019 - a pig.

Materials for making Christmas toys from felt

To create a unique image of your Christmas tree, you will need improvised tools that every housewife has in everyday life:

  • several pieces of felt of different colors;
  • sharpened scissors;
  • various small decorations (sequins, beads, rhinestones, ribbons, buttons, sparkles, beads);
  • cardboard;
  • foam rubber;
  • pencil;
  • markers;
  • threads / floss;
  • glue.

In fact, it is not necessary to collect all these items at once. A set of necessary materials is prepared depending on the type of toy being made. Products from felt are flat and voluminous. The simplest felt toys are flat. Their manufacture consists in transferring the template to the material, which is subsequently cut out and decorated - the toy is ready. If this option is too mediocre for you, then we suggest sewing a voluminous toy. For such a product, you will already need a filler. And although it will take more time to make it, the effect of such decoration will be more significant.

Technique for making felt toys

Felt is easy to work with. This material is a compressed fine wool with the addition of fluff. It is the fluff that makes felt soft, compared to felt, to which felt is very similar. Previously, felt was used to warm winter hats and shoes. Today, the boundaries of the use of felt have expanded in many ways - dense, but soft multi-colored felt sheets are used with pleasure by designers and hand-made masters.

Felt is easy to cut - its edges do not crumble along the cut line, it is cut "like clockwork".

The simplest felt toys are flat. They can be unilateral or bilateral. The pattern you like is transferred with chalk or a marker onto felt (circled), and then the pattern is cut out. You can decorate the toy on both sides at once - in this case, the toy will be double-sided. Well, if you want to give the product strength, then the figure can be glued to colored cardboard with one side.

In the case of working with voluminous toys, two parts are cut out at once according to the template. To do this, a sheet of felt is folded in half, for convenience it is linked with a needle (so that there is no shift) and cut out. Two pieces at the same time. Further, each detail is decorated based on the design of the composition, and only at the end the details are sewn together. If this is your first time taking up a needle and thread, then we recommend using the simplest type of seam “forward needle” - they connect small parts along the cut line. Professional seamstresses call such a seam basting. With such a seam, the stitches alternate with gaps. If such a seam does not fit, then you can resort to the “back needle” technique. This is a very beautiful and even seam that will decorate any product. For sewing volumetric openwork products, it will be useful to master the technique of the assembly seam. It is performed in the same way as the “forward needle”, only with a stronger thread tension.

If you chose woolen felt, then individual hairs may come out at the edges over time, which will not look aesthetically pleasing. In this case, to avoid this, a seam "over the edge" is used. Stitches are made over the edge, thereby reliably linking the parts together and securing the cut lines. Stitches are sewn at an equal distance from each other with a slight slope to the left or right.

The most spectacular is the loop or winding seam. The loops during the course of the needle go along the edge of the material, thereby becoming almost invisible. This seam is very strong.

After the main part is sewn together, the filler is inserted into the remaining hole, evenly distributed inside the toy, and then the area is sewn up to the end. If it was planned to create a hanging toy, then a puncture is made in the upper part of the product and a satin ribbon or golden thread is threaded. Everything - the Christmas tree toy is ready!

  1. Felt sheets have different thicknesses. However, to create Christmas tree decorations, it is better to use sheets of no more than 1.5 millimeters. Thin felt is easier to roll and shape.
  2. Felt is sold in A3 or A4 sheets. Before buying, try to calculate the required amount of material, otherwise it will be a shame if there is not enough felt at the most crucial moment.
  3. For needlework, choose a semi-woolen felt with the addition of viscose or acrylic;
  4. To transfer the pattern to the material, use a self-disappearing marker for marking. If this is not available, tailor's chalk will do.
  5. Cut out the figures with ordinary clerical scissors. But if you "get confused", then you can find special curly scissors that are cut out in a "wave" or "zigzag". With such scissors, the edges of the figures will be original.
  6. To glue the elements together, PVA or textile glue is used. You can use a heat gun.
  7. If you are sewing a voluminous toy, then use not only foam rubber for filling, but also synthetic winterizer and holofiber in balls. It is better to refuse cotton wool, as it seeps through the seams - such a toy will quickly lose its aesthetic appearance.

Options for Christmas toys made of felt

If you are a person with a fantasy, then it will not be difficult to come up with a template for a funny toy. Otherwise, the Internet will come to your aid, where you will find hundreds of ready-made patterns for patterns. To decorate the Christmas tree, you can create dozens of hanging toys, different in shape and decoration.

Christmas tree toy Snow Maiden made of felt

We approach the choice of jewelry for the New Year's beauty with special trepidation and warmth. Therefore, handmade Christmas decorations create an atmosphere of comfort and magic. Let's sew a Snow Maiden.

To make a toy you will need:

  • white sheet of paper;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • felt blue (or blue), beige, yellow and white;
  • lace ribbon;
  • a thread;
  • sintepon.

On a white sheet of paper, we need to draw a template. We draw with a simple pencil. You can take a regular notebook sheet.

The main part must be circled on blue felt. Such parts need to be cut 2 pieces.

We cut them out.

Now you need to trace the details of the face on one of the details. Cut out this circle. This will be in front of the Snow Maiden, which means that we will later sew the face into this hole.

Now you need beige felt. Draw a circle on it and cut it out. We cut it out a little larger than the hole on the front part, so that later it would be convenient to sew on. This face. Cut out bangs from yellow felt. You can use orange or brown felt.

We apply the bangs to the face, and then we place the face in the hole on the wrong side, which we cut out. Sew along the edge with simple stitches.

Cut out boots from white felt. We attach 2 parts, and from below we place between the details of the hem of the boots. We are sewing. But not completely, but only the bottom.

Now you need to decorate the kokoshnik of the Snow Maiden. Therefore, we embroider simple snowflakes. Just make small stitches that will intersect with each other.

2 on each side and 1 more in the center of the kokoshnik. And now we continue to sew. As you sew, you need to fill the part with padding polyester. You don't need to fill too tightly.

Let's make mittens. To do this, simply cut out 2 small and thin strips. Their width should be slightly larger than the width of the handles. Sew them to the handles in a horizontal position. Get frills from mittens.

Glue or sew a lace ribbon in the center of the fur coat. We sew it in a vertical position. This will be the clasp of the coat.

We paint the face with paint or nail polish, and with the help of blush we make the Snow Maiden's cheeks pink. We sew a loop of satin ribbon on the back, on which we will then hang the toy on the Christmas tree.

Such a toy will look great in a set with other decorations. Snow Maiden is perfect for any interior.

Snowflakes and stars

One of the most popular types of decoration are stars and snowflakes. These products can be voluminous or flat, multi-colored or plain, consist of many limbs, carved and openwork.

Click and download the template

When creating snowflakes, you can not use a template. It is enough to fold a square sheet of felt four times and cut the edges as you wish. When you unfold the sheet, you will find a ready-made snowflake with carved edges, which will only need to be decorated.

You can make a plump snowflake by sewing together two identically cut pieces and filling the inside with batting. For decoration, you can use beads, which are allowed along the edge. And in the center of the snowflake, glue a thermal picture with the symbol of the year.

Can you make a snowflake like this?

For a more complex composition, it is preferable to use a template. To create a voluminous hanging snowflake, you need to cut several identical parts at once using different colors of felt. Next, they need to be superimposed on each other with a slight mixing to the side, and then sew the parts together in the center. The result is a multi-layered snowflake that will look great on a Christmas tree branch.

Another option for beautiful Christmas decorations is to create a garland of stars and snowflakes. To do this, one-dimensional elements are cut out from different bushes of felt, which are subsequently linked together with a satin ribbon. It turns out a multi-colored soft garland that will look wonderful not only on the Christmas tree, but also on any item in the room.

Santa Claus from felt

The Christmas tree will become more elegant if the figurines of Grandfather Frost flaunt on its branches. On the Internet you can find funny grandfather patterns.

If you have already found a suitable picture, then cut it out faster and start cutting out the product. All elements of the future toy are transferred to the felt in two copies. Usually Frost's torso is drawn in the form of an inverted incandescent light bulb. Also in the details should be a beard, mustache, a bag with gifts.

The body and bag are made of red felt, and the rest of the composition is made of white. When all the elements are cut out, they proceed to the next stage - assembling the toy:

  1. A beard and a hat are glued to the part that will be the facial function. A small piece of beige felt is inserted into the space between them - this area will play the role of a face.
  2. Next, sew on the eyes - buttons.
  3. A mustache is sewn over the beard.
  4. When the front side is completely ready, the back is sewn to it. A synthetic winterizer is pushed into the stuffing hole.
  5. A white pompom is glued to the cap.
  6. A small red bag is sewn on one side, which is decorated with rhinestones.
  7. The hat and lower body are decorated with multi-colored stars or snowflakes.

The finished Santa Claus will remain hanging on the Christmas tree with a white satin ribbon.

Step by step master class

For sewing Santa Claus we need:

  • red, peach, brown and white felt;
  • scissors;
  • needle;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • threads;
  • pencil or pen;
  • paper;
  • black paint;
  • pink eyeshadow or pink pastel.

Felt for such a toy should be chosen soft. It is easier to work with him and toys - crafts for the New Year will not be tough.

How to sew

Draw a pattern on a piece of paper. Santa Claus can be made small or you can enlarge the pattern and make it big.

In this master class, Santa Claus will be in the usual red coat and red cap. But you can use blue or blue felt. In clothes of this color, he will also look good.

Cut out every detail from paper. And transfer the prepared pattern to the felt. A fur coat, a hat and a head need to be cut out twice. That is, there should be two parts each, since the toy will be voluminous. Everything else is cut in one piece.

We sew the head and stuff it with padding polyester. We also sew a hat. The pom-pom can be gently tacked with a couple of stitches or glued with hot glue.

We put a hat on the head of the future Santa Claus. We hold her. We attach the white part of the cap. And we sew the hat to the head along the white part with white threads.

Now we sew the body. We sew a fur coat and immediately put arms and legs into it. In the process of knitting, you need to fill the body with synthetic winterizer.

We have the details ready and now we will collect Santa Claus. Sew the head to the body. A seam is formed at the junction of the toy.

The toy is almost ready. To hide the seam on the neck, cut out a small thin strip of white felt.

And tie it like a scarf. So we hid the seam and made the toy more interesting.

It remains to draw the eyes. We can paint them with ordinary black paint. We just put small dots. We also use pink shadows for blush. Let's paint the cheeks of Santa Claus. So it looks ruddy as if it had just come out of the cold. Pastels can also be used instead of shadows. Scrape it with a knife and tint the cheeks with the resulting powder.

Santa Claus from felt is ready! If you plan to decorate a Christmas tree with a toy, then you can sew a loop of felt or ribbons to the hat.

The edges do not require processing, and a huge color spectrum allows you to create the most beautiful toys.

  1. For work, felt sheets with a thickness of about 1-1.5 mm are used. Only with such a thickness will the toy be elegant.
  2. For give preference to felt with the addition of viscose or acrylic.
  3. The needle must be sharp. This will make it easier to pierce the flaps.
  4. Small parts can be glued together using PVA. But at the same time, control the amount of glue squeezed out so that it does not leak through the fabric.
  5. You can also use a thermostat.
  6. If you plan to make voluminous figures, do not forget about the filler - synthetic winterizer or holofiber.
  7. To transfer the design to the fabric, you can use chalk, a self-disappearing marker or a gel pen.

It is not recommended to use cotton wool or batting as a filler, because such material, protruding through the seams, makes the toy untidy.

Knowing all the nuances of working with the material, you can get to work. Consider how to sew Christmas tree decorations from felt with your own hands according to frequently used patterns.

Christmas decorations

As a rule, Christmas toys made of felt are made of two types: simple, flat and voluminous. In the first option, you should simply cut out the felt figures along the contour of the pattern and decorate them. TOP-5 Christmas toys made of felt

The world of toys is infinitely diverse. For example, fabric toys are one of the ancient types of needlework. Today they are sold in stores, sewn to order or made by those who love to needlework for themselves and their families. Patterns of toys made of felt, one of the most popular materials in toy workshops, allow you to create amazing and unique items for games, interior decoration and just for the soul. Sewing felt toys with your own hands, with patterns for them, is convenient and pleasant.

Why felt?

Toys can be sewn from any fabric, however, not all of it is practical for such needlework. But felt is one of the most suitable materials for puppetry. Why? For several reasons.

Felt in its history has more than one decade, and its grandfather - felt, has been produced in general for centuries. Felted felt boots that everyone had in childhood, for sure, are the warmest shoes of all time. Both felt and felt are non-woven materials, only the latter is more delicate, if I may say so. It is made from wool, animal fluff, as well as from synthetic threads by dumping (chaotic weaving of threads together) and heat treatment. Due to this, this fabric does not cause allergies, although the toys are soft, pleasant to the touch. Since this is a felted material, it does not crumble when cut, and patterns of felt toys keep their shape perfectly during sewing and during operation. Also, the fabric is well cut with scissors, its edge does not fray. Therefore, patterns of felt toys do not require additional processing.

Another undoubted advantage of this material is the abundance of colors. Craftswomen are available in almost any color and shade you want.

The secrets of making toys from felt with your own hands: with patterns, materials, tools

Felt as a material for sewing toys and decorative items is very practical. You just need to choose the right variety, because it is made from natural, mixed and synthetic threads. Natural fabric is afraid of hot water. It is very soft and easily wrinkled. Semi-woolen felt does not hold its shape well enough; for strength, it will have to be glued with doubler. But the fabric made of artificial wool - acrylic or polyester - is the most suitable for toy creativity. Patterns of toys made of felt made from synthetic threads have pure shades, do not shag when working with them.

This fabric is made in different thicknesses. It is clear that thick (4-5 mm thick) felt is suitable for the base of the toy. The material is a little thinner (2-3 mm) - for making parts, and thin felt is the best suited for small decor of a sewn toy. In order to work with such a fabric, you need not so many tools - paper and a special pencil for making patterns and transferring them to the fabric, scissors, matching or contrasting threads, a thin needle and decor accessories - beads, rhinestones, sequins.

Sewn toys made of felt, the patterns for which are already ready, can be repeated many times, varying the color of the material and decor. This is a universal way to get a whole collection, for example, decorations for the Christmas tree.

Features of felt toys

Most often, felt toys are flat elements, only slightly stuffed with padding polyester. That is why felt toys, patterns for which are difficult to find and you have to do them yourself, are very easy to draw. The elementary contours of any objects, celestial bodies, animals - yes, everything your heart desires, you can draw by hand or use pictures. For greater reliability, distinctive details are drawn on the sketch, for example, the wings of birds, the middle - of a flower. The pattern is copied and cut into separate elements. When cutting toys, do not forget that the second parts are cut out in a mirror image.

Felt toys (patterns for beginners are easy to make) turn out to be no less interesting for beginners than toys of experienced craftswomen who use complex tucked elements to obtain voluminous products. It is difficult to make such a pattern on your own, and therefore it is best to use the existing developments of toy craftsmen.

How to sew a felt toy?

So, the patterns of felt toys are ready. Now they need to be assembled into a single thing. To begin with, all additional elements and decor are sewn onto the main part. This is done in order to hide the knots. When the two halves are ready, they are folded wrong sides to each other and sewn together. When working with felt, the simplest seams are used - “forward needle” and “overlock seam over the edge”.

Felt toys can be washed in warm water without twisting, and then dried by blotting in a towel. Since it is a safe material, toys and pendants for babies are sewn from it.

What is felt? What types does it come in, and what tools are useful for working with felt? Let's explore all these questions in depth!

Such a material popular among needlewomen as felt is a rather dense compressed woolen mass, which is cut into sheets of certain sizes or rolled into rolls. Density is achieved by treating wool with hot steam. Felt is a close relative of felt, but more delicate animal wool or down is usually used to make felt.

Felt in sheets

What can felt be used for? It all depends on your imagination! Felt toys and crafts are very popular among mothers and their babies. From felt, you can sew various decorations (brooches and pendants), decorate the covers of notebooks and photo albums with it, decorate pillows and bedspreads.

Undoubted pluses of felt:

  • has a wide range of colors;
  • produced in sheets of various thicknesses;
  • easy to sew and stick;
  • does not have a front and back side;
  • The edges of the felt do not crumble, there is no need to bend them.

Felt classification

The first way to classify felt is its thickness. In needlework stores, you can find felt of different thicknesses: from 1 to 5 mm.

Felt of different thickness

The thinner felt is ideal for small detail cutouts. Applications and toys made of felt 1-1.5 mm thick will turn out to be more accurate.

Thick felt is best used as a base (for example, for a bag or for a developing book). It keeps its shape better.

The composition of the felt

Felt (as well as threads for knitting and embroidery) can have a different composition: pure wool, half wool, artificial and synthetic. Each composition has its own characteristics and disadvantages.

Which felt is better to buy?

Before buying felt, think about:

  1. What are you going to sew?
  2. What size will the product be?
  3. How well should it hold its shape?
  4. Will this product be subject to heavy use (frequent washing)?
  5. Will this product come into direct contact with skin or hair?

Depending on the answers, you will understand what qualities of felt will be of paramount importance to you.

Usually felt is sold in rectangular sheets of A4 or A3 format. Before buying, it is better to calculate exactly how many sheets you will need to make the product.

Tools needed when working with felt

Materials for cutting parts

There should be several scissors: cutting or ordinary stationery with straight blades; small scissors with straight tips - for cutting small details; curly scissors (wave, zig-zag); roller knife - for cutting thick felt.

For cutting small round holes (for example, the heart of flowers), an eyelet punch is suitable.

Materials for transferring patterns to material

Usually needlewomen use self-disappearing or tailor's chalk for this purpose. For patterns of small details, you can use a gel pen.

When using a disappearing marker, be sure to test it EARLY for "disappearance".

Materials for connecting individual parts

Threads

You can sew parts with ordinary sewing threads (polyester). Depending on the thickness of the felt, the thread is used both in one and in several additions.

Floss threads will also be useful. Using floss, you can both embroider patterns on the product itself, and connect two parts “over the edge”.

needles

For manual stitching of parts, it is necessary to choose needles with a thin and sharp end. When sewing on a sewing machine, use a heavy fabric needle (such as a denim needle).

Glue

If you decide to glue the elements together, then the most common glue options are PVA, Moment-Crystal and textile glue.

The main condition for the use of any glue is accurate application. The glue should not saturate the felt part through and through - then the stains will appear on the surface of the product.

When using Moment glue, it is applied only along the edges of the product!

Pay attention to the glue from the thermal gun. This option is notable for its convenience, but to work with it you need to adapt.

Using a heat gun

If you need to glue the walls of the box or the cover for the album, then it is better to use double-sided tape.

Filler

If your product should be voluminous, then be sure to think about the filler.

Do not use batting, cotton wool, various scraps of fabrics. Stuffing the product evenly will not work: it will turn out to be uneven and rather heavy. In addition, products filled with cotton wool are difficult to rinse after washing. This material is quite hygroscopic and will draw water out of the air. This means that over time, mold may appear in such a product.

And shreds of fabrics and threads used as a filler can fade and stain the fabric of the product.

Simple seams for working with felt

The constituent elements of felt crafts can be sewn together with almost any seam. Moreover, the seam can become both a way to connect parts, and decoration.

Seams on a felt product can be done both manually and on a sewing machine.
