How to knit a beanie hat

For those who knit such a beanie for the first time, I will briefly explain the work algorithm. To make it clear to you what we do at each stage.

1. The hat is knitted in “garter stitch”, that is, each row is knitted with facial loops. From the front side they knitted the front ones, turned to the wrong side - and again we go to the front. Very simple!
2. Knitting is done across. Not from the crown down, and not from the face to the crown, but from edge to edge. Therefore, the fabric, when knitting is over, is rotated by 45 degrees. The left side will become the top of the head, the right side will be adjacent to the face.
3. Now, an IMPORTANT POINT about the height and width of the beanie. When we knit hats from the bottom up, the circumference (width) depends on the number of loops cast on. And the height - from the number of rows. For such a beanie, the opposite is true: the circle is the rows, the height is the number of loops cast on.


4. The top of the head in such a hat does not have to be pulled together. It will turn out immediately, thanks to the shortened rows.
5. Shortened rows are also easy to knit: each subsequent row is not knitted for a certain number of loops. In words, it seems incomprehensible and difficult. Actually, it's not difficult at all. Below I showed you the steps so as not to send you to the old MK and online.
6. As a result of knitting in short rows, we will get “wedges”, narrowed on the left, wide on the right side. The circumference of the caps depends on the width of the wedges.

Now is the time to reveal the "secret" of how the top of the head with "openwork" paths. And why, in the previous version, the crown did not fold with the ears, but here it folds.

  • Firstly, she changed the principle of knitting wedges. For this beanie hat, I knit them, alternating: two narrow ones - two wide ones. In narrow ones I do not knit four loops, in wide ones - 12 loops each.
  • Secondly, I knit short rows in different directions: either FROM the top of the head, then Toward it. Such a seemingly simple technique made it possible to make interesting “tracks”.

How to calculate cap size?

Stop at this section, read carefully. Information about the calculation of the size will be more understandable to those who have previously knitted such beanie hats using my MK and online.

IN circles the hat is very elastic, because the “garter stitch” is easily stretched, and when worn, it breaks a little. For example, a coral hat was loosely worn on my size 58-59. But, of course, small in height.

Therefore, with regard to the height of the beanie hat, then it is necessary to change the number of loops cast on. Depending on the size of the needles, the thickness of the yarn and the desired size. The crown should rise slightly to fold into the ears upright.

SIZES for my beanie hats:


Knitted with yarn Pekhorka Promising (Winter Series), 270m/100g, 50% merino wool/50% bulk acrylic. It turned out just perfect, not tight - not weak. It took 85 gr. Needles №4

  • Blue cap on OG 52-57. Height 24.5 cm, width 22 cm, circumference 44 cm. Weight 112 gr.

Also crocheted with pekhorka Souvenirnaya, 80m/100g, in one thread, with knitting needles No. 5. This beanie hat, in order to once again verify the correctness of the calculations, was knitted in a hurry (in less than two hours). Dressed classically (back seam).

SIZE CALCULATION

Added on September 25, 2016: Since I have questions, I'll clarify. TOTAL in the cap there are always 8 wedges, of which: 1 - narrow, 2 and 3 - wide, 4 and 5 - narrow, 6 and 7 - wide, 8 - narrow. To knit a hat narrower / wider, you need to change the number of loops in shortened rows.

In order for the crown to fold with the ears, it is necessary to correctly calculate the number of loops for wide wedges. You need to calculate approximately in a ratio of 3: 1. What this means, let's look at two examples of ready-made hats.

In a coral beanie I scored 36 sts. For short wedges, I did not knit 4 sts each (this is 8 rows), for wide ones - 12 sts each, these are 24 rows (3: 1 ratio).

So that the seam at the back does not “move out” to the side, I knit narrow wedges first and last. Along the edges - two wide wedges (each of which is equal to three narrow ones, since it has 24 rows). In the center, on the front of the beanie, there are two narrow wedges. And I finish with a narrow wedge.

It turns out like this: 8 r - 24 r - 24 r - 8 r - 8 r - 24 r - 24 r - 8 r = 128 r. Plus two rows (one at the beginning and at the end of knitting) = 130 p. In total, 36 loops gave me a height of 23 cm, and 130 rows give a circumference of 52 cm.

- In the blue hat, 32 points are dialed. In small wedges, 3 points each, in wide wedges, 8 points each. The scheme looks like this: 6 p - 16 p - 16 p - 6 p - 6 p - 16 p - 16 p - 6 p = 88 p. Plus 2 extreme rows = 90 p.

Those. depending on the thickness of the threads, it is necessary to slightly change the ratio of the shortened rows. The number of rows depends on them, and, therefore, the circumference of the caps.

You see, in a blue hat, I kind of shortened it a little - instead of 12, I didn’t knit 8 p each. And how much the beanie hat became smaller in rows, and in a circle.

As usual, in the process everything becomes clearer and simpler than it seems from the description. The main thing is to start!

What do you need to knit a hat with ears?

1. Yarn: It is important to choose the right yarn, because thin yarn will not work. By "thin" I mean somewhere thinner than 200m/100g. I think the best thread is from 100m/100g to 150-160m/100g. If there is no such thick one, or you have already prepared a thin thread, nothing - you can tie it in several additions.

2. Knitting needles: I knitted with knitting needles No. 4, circular, on a metal cable. And my beanie is plump to the touch (but not stiff). You can take #4,5 or even #5. Then the hat will be a little more, looser.

3. Hook number 3 - for stitching. In principle, it is not important to sew with a crochet. As you are accustomed to, so you can sew. I usually sew with a sewing needle. But, in this hat it turned out to be more convenient and faster to crochet.

I cast on 36 stitches on the needles. Note: I include the edge loop in the total bill.

In order not to crochet the hat with a “crustacean step”, as I did before, this time I decided to give the hat a ribbed edge. She knitted in this way: from the front side, that is, at the beginning of the row, she removed the hem, as usual, without knitting, from the left knitting needle, to the right - behind the front wall of the loop. And from the wrong side of the row she knitted it - behind the back wall.

I show: I remove the first loop, without knitting - behind the front wall (half-loop).

I knit to the end, turn around, go to the end from the wrong side - also with facial loops. Below I show how I knit chrome from the inside - behind the back wall.

ZERO ROW

0 p: knit this row, 36 p., with facial loops. This, zero row is needed in order not to start knitting the first wedge from the typesetting chain. And also - for stitching beanie hats.

FIRST wedge

I knit the first wedge in short rows. I do not knit 4 loops each (i.e. there will be 8 rows in the wedge). The score is: 4-3-2-1, i.e. I shorten the row in the direction TO THE TOP. I show you the steps below.

R 1 (32 sts): Knitted 32 sts. Now we need to turn around and knit 32 sts in the opposite direction. But, so that there are no holes left from the shortened rows, before turning around, I loop the loops (see below).

She took off the 4th loop from the edge, without knitting, on the right knitting needle (the green arrow points to it). The thread remained at work.

Brought the working thread forward.

I returned the 4th st from the right needle to the left. There are again four loops on the left needle, between the third and fourth there is a working thread. I turn knitting to the wrong side.

2 p (32 p): You see, from the inside, the 4th loop from the edge is twisted with a working thread. And, thanks to such a simple technique, the loop is pulled up to the rest, leaving no holes.

3 p (33 p.): Knitted the next short row. She reached the end of the line. Look, the fourth loop in the photo I have not yet knitted to show that you can see the distance between it and the other three. Therefore, it is not necessary to hang a marker.

We knit this one, 4 sts are also facial. And the next, 3rd from the edge, I wrap around.


4 p (33 p.): turn around, walk with
inside out (no photo).
5 p (34 p.): I reach the edge, now I wrap the second one from the edge of the p.


6 p (34 p.): I turn around, knit from the inside out.

Also, at first she took it off on the right knitting needle, brought the thread forward and returned it to the left knitting needle. The loop is twisted, you can turn around.

The size of my wedge: 23 × 4 cm. I reset the count (i.e., I start counting again).

SECOND wedge, wide, do not knit 12 p. There will be 24 rows in the wedge. I knit a shortened row differently, starting FROM THE TOP. At the same time, I perform the entanglement in the same way as above. The score is: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12

Note: it is better to hang a marker-pin on such a wedge, because with such reproach rows it is hard to see which loop was wrapped around.

I show you how to knit short rows in reverse. I do not show the purl rows in the photo, we knit them in the same way as shown above. In order not to write every time, I put ellipses in these rows - which means we just go back to the front ones.

R 1: Knit the row to the end. The last loop remains, which I wrap around and unfold.

3 p: knit a row, at the end I wrap the second loop from the edge. We knit, as usual, to the end, I turn around.

R 5: I twist the third loop.

So I continue, wrapping each subsequent loops, in the direction from the crown. Below I have painted you in rows so that you do not lose count for the first time.

FOURTH short, 4 p. (8 rows), fit to the crown: 4-3-2-1

The fourth wedge knitted. In width (not to be confused with depth), the cap reached 25 cm.

FIFTH wide, do not knit 4p. (8 p), from the crown: 1-2-3-4 Width 28 cm.

SIXTH wedge tied. I knit short rows, starting from the crown: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 Width 37 cm. Knitted 24 rows in a wedge.

SEVENTH on 12 p, to the crown: 12-11-10, etc. Width 48 cm. Knitted another 24 p.

The EIGHTH wedge is finished (1-2-3-4). Width 50.5 cm. Knitted 8 p. There are 128 rows in total.

0 p: final, knit in the direction of the crown. Note: the last loop, which is at the very top of the head (we constantly removed it, without knitting it when entwined) - I also knit the front one.

Then, I close the last row (I took out the knitting needles, pulled out a larger thread on the right).

ASSEMBLY I crochet, capturing the extreme half loops. You see, I calculated the completion of knitting so that when the hat is sewn, all the ends of the threads can be hidden at the crown.

The beanie is ready. I cut off the end of the thread about 15-20 cm long. I crochet it through the crown loops (they are located in the center with the sun). Then I pull the beanie hats to the wrong side, tie them in a knot. I cut the ends and that's it! No need to waste time trying to neatly, imperceptibly hide the ends of the yarn.

HOW TO PUT ON THE HAT

  • Dressed differently. If it’s like a cockerel hat, then we just put it on as it is, while the seam remains at the back.
  • Or as a beanie hat with ears. To make the ears appear, we put on a hat across (like a cap). And with your fingers we press the protruding corners to each other. The wedges involuntarily stick out to the side, forming those very desired ears)) It is necessary to crush a little in the center, between the ears, so that their shape is better manifested.
