Sole bleaching

Be sure to bleach the sole, namely the side part and the nose of the sneaker. For this:

  1. Mix soda and vinegar to make a paste.
  2. Rub the prepared mixture onto the rubber parts using an old toothbrush.
  3. Rub thoroughly and leave for 25-30 minutes.
  4. Gently rinse off the mud mixture with water.

After this procedure, the sole will be like new.

Washing sneakers

  1. Before washing, place your sneakers in a special bag for washing shoes or just in an old pillowcase.
  2. Select the delicate cycle in your washing machine. The water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees.

Important! With other washing modes, you can ruin either your sneakers or your washing machine.

  1. Deactivate the spin function.
  2. After finishing washing, let the shoes dry naturally.
  3. To prevent it from losing its shape, you can put crumpled newspapers inside.

After your shoes have dried, you can safely experiment with their design. Just first think about what you would like to see as a result and prepare the necessary materials. And our article will help you with your plans and ways to implement them.

  • petrolatum;
  • vinegar;
  • soda;
  • clean cloths and napkins.

  1. Dilute the paint in the prepared container according to the instructions.

  2. Wait a couple of minutes.
  3. Dip again, just a little deeper.
  4. Dip the shoe several times, each time deeper, until it is completely painted. This way the bottom will be much brighter than the top.
  5. At the end of painting, take a clean cloth and rub the paint so that the tone transitions are smooth. If necessary, you can moisten the cloth with water.
  6. Now let the paint soak in for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Dip the sneakers in a container of water and vinegar to set the color on the fabric.
  8. Rinse stained shoes thoroughly with running water.

Multicolor dyeing

If you have the opportunity to purchase several colors of acrylic paint for fabric, then we will tell you a number of ideas for original prints on how to paint sneakers at home.

Ikat

This is a type of fabric design that came from the east. It is especially associated with Uzbekistan and India. It consists of 2-3-color spots, diamonds, zigzags with blurred, uneven edges. You don't need any special artistic talent to apply this technique to your sneakers:

  1. First, protect the sole and toe with masking tape or Vaseline.
  2. Pour a little paint of 2 or 3 colors into different lids (from water), each separately.
  3. Using a foam sponge, apply a larger circle, for example, blue.
  4. Next, with another sponge, apply a smaller circle in the middle, for example, yellow.
  5. In the very middle of the shoe, draw a small circle, for example white.
  6. Now use a clean, damp sponge to rub the edges of the design so that it looks a little smudged.
  7. Let the paint dry for about 15 hours and set it with a hair dryer.

Marine theme. Oceania

You can easily depict, for example, a drawing on the theme of the ocean on your shoes:

  1. Cover the sole with masking tape.
  2. On white sneakers, using thin and thick brushes, apply a pattern depicting sea waves and splashes of water with blue acrylic paint for fabric.
  3. You can add shells, for example, with a thin brush.
  4. Let the drawing dry for a day and fix the result with a hairdryer.

Space theme. Galaxy

We all love to admire the stars at night and remember how we dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a child. To make space a little closer, you can depict an entire galaxy on old sneakers. How to paint sneakers at home on this theme? For this:

  • purchase acrylic paints in white, pink, purple and blue colors;
  • You will also need foam sponges, brushes, an old toothbrush and masking tape.

Painting method:

  1. First, cover the toe and sole of the sneaker with masking tape so that they do not get dirty when painting.
  2. Using a sponge, apply a blue background to the entire sneaker.
  3. Using a brush or the corner of a sponge, apply blue and purple spots of different sizes in the form of clouds onto the resulting background.
  4. Blend the drawing so that the center is bright and the edges are blurred.
  5. Finally, dip your toothbrush in white paint and run your fingernail along the bristles to create a splash of white onto the “nebulas” you created. These will be the stars.
  6. Repeat similar steps symmetrically on the second shoe.
  7. Let the shoes dry for a day.
  8. Set the color with a hairdryer.
  9. Remove the tape and insert laces of a matching color.

Now your intergalactic sneakers are ready to fly.

Color splashes

For this painting technique, you only need bright acrylic paints, brushes, and masking tape. Even a child can cope with such a task; no artistic inclinations are required for this. To dye fabric sneakers:

  1. First, cover with masking tape all parts of the shoes that do not need to be painted.
  2. Cover the area where you are going to create with oilcloth or newspapers (you can do this outside for convenience).
  3. Squeeze some paint into the lid for easy dipping.
  4. The paint should be liquid, so add water if necessary.
  5. Place the sneakers on the mat.
  6. Dip your brush into paint and spray it onto your sneakers.
  7. Let the sneakers dry for a day and iron them or blow on them with a hot hairdryer.

Important! Heat treatment significantly improves paint adhesion.

Try to combine bright colors so that the resulting sneakers come out playful, evoking associations with the festival of colors in India.

Drawings with markers and pen

In order to apply a small fantasy design, you can use fabric markers. Similar markers are sold in craft stores or hobby centers:

  1. Come up with an ornament.
  2. Apply it with a simple pencil onto the shoe fabric.
  3. Then draw with markers.

Important! Some craftsmen apply ornaments or inscriptions with a simple pen. This print looks quite original and stylish.

  • Sneakers or moccasins with polka dots look very cute. To do this, simply make a stencil in the form of a circle and, using a sponge and acrylic paint, apply “peas” evenly over the entire surface of the shoe.
  • Black and white sneakers will look classic. Simply paint over individual areas with black acrylic paint.
  • You can apply a geometric pattern, checks, stripes or a Greek meander to the fabric. For such designs, it is more convenient to use fabric contours. You can simply apply a bright edging as an outline.
  • Just large strokes of different colors will look interesting.

How to paint sneakers?

If for some reason you don’t want to take your sneakers to a shoe shop for painting, you can try to do it yourself. Moreover, the process is not difficult work.

Painting stages:

  1. Clean your sneakers from dust, dirt, shoe polish or wax residues, and dry them thoroughly.
  2. Degrease the surface. You can use a solution of laundry soap and ammonia for this purpose.
  3. Prepare the paint. It should match the type of material your sneakers are made from. It can be water-based paint, powder paint, acrylic paint, spray paint, cream paint and others.
  4. Wear gloves.
  5. Protect the sole with masking tape.
  6. Take out the laces and paint your sneakers.

Important! Try to do this in one step, as the color may not be uniform. If you spray paint nubuck or velor, do not hold the can too close to the shoes, otherwise there will be stains. Spray from the distance specified in the instructions.

  1. If the color turns out to be pale, then repeat the painting after a few hours.
  2. Let the shoes dry for a day and you can safely wear your updated sneakers.

Decoration with sparkles, rhinestones, sequins, thorns

Sneakers or slip-ons look very glamorous in a brilliant design. In order to “upgrade” your boring shoes, you need to purchase the following items in specialized stores:

  • glitter (in bulk in jars) of one or more colors;
  • fabric glue;
  • spikes or rhinestones for accent.

Decoration method:

  1. First, cover the rubber parts of the sneaker with masking or simple tape and prepare everything you need.
  2. Take a large brush and apply glue to the fabric.

Important! Do not apply glue to the entire surface at once, otherwise the furthest areas will dry before you have time to sprinkle glitter on them. Work in parts.

  1. Next, generously sprinkle this area with glitter of the desired color and press it down a little with your fingers.
  2. You can apply darker glitter along the bottom.
  3. At the final stage of decoration, tap the shoes a little so that excess glitter falls off.
  4. Examine the sneakers. If there are empty areas, apply glue in spots and add glitter.

Important! Some craftsmen immediately mix glue with glitter and apply this mixture to sneakers.

  1. It remains to place accents in the form of rhinestones or metal cone-shaped spikes. They can be secured with a glue gun, for example, on the front of a sneaker.
  2. Instead of laces, you can insert satin ribbons.

Now you will have a fantastic look in your “new” old sneakers, and will catch the envious glances of your friends.

Interesting ideas for transforming old sneakers

If you are ready to take the time not only to paint your sneakers, but also to take more thorough steps, consider one of the ideas below.

Wings

This idea will be especially interesting for children and teenagers:

  1. Make a template of small wings (left and right).
  2. Transfer the design onto 4 pieces of faux thin leather (2 front and 2 reverse, mirror images).
  3. Place a piece of felt or other dense fabric between them, glue and cut along the contour. You should have two wings.
  4. Make holes along the edge, corresponding to the holes for the laces.
  5. Using a permanent marker, draw a design of feathers on both sides symmetrically.
  6. Let the resulting decor dry and lace it to the shoes, one on the side of each sneaker.

Thanks to this decoration, your legs will literally acquire wings.

Down with the laces

You can replace the laces with elastic fabric:

  1. Take a wide elastic band or other thick stretch fabric.
  2. Measure the length from the sole (outside side) to the eyelets on the opposite side.
  3. Cut and sew slightly diagonally, tucking the edges of the elastic.
  4. You can cover the eyelets on the top of the sneaker with an elastic band, or you can sew them underneath.

Now you don’t need to waste time tying your laces and your sneakers look creative.

Applique and embroidery

If you have embroidery skills, you can add originality to your shoes with your own hands.

  • Take a simple design or ornament, apply a sneaker to the fabric and embroider it with a cross or satin stitch. These could be flowers, initials or geometric designs. Whatever your imagination tells you.
  • You can buy ready-made appliqués at sewing and craft stores and sew them on shoes.
  • You can also crochet laces from cotton threads. It will take no more than half an hour, but your sneakers will have a twist.

I, like many here, am a fan of the famous American brand of sneakers, as well as the great American expressionist artist Jackson Pollock. And fashion and art, as you know, go hand in hand.
And it so happened that my favorite blue sneakers faded in one summer so much that it became indecent to walk in them. But it would be a pity to throw it away, what else... And since, besides Pollock and Converse, I also like to paint everything, there were no options. Paint - definitely!

Everything is very quick and simple, and you don’t have to be a painting genius, because the genius has already done everything for us - we’ll just take his creative method (in a simplified version, of course), and I’ll teach you how...)

* In general, you take your faded old sneakers (real Creators can take new white ones, and, as you guessed, from any company) + acrylic paints for fabric + brushes + scissors/adhesive tape - ONCE.

* Seal the white rubber toe and sole with tape so as not to stain it with paint, take out the laces - TWO. If you don’t want to suffer, like I did, scrubbing the eyelets, you can seal them with thin tape.

* Paint sneakers with large spots in 2-3 colors. I had 3 jars of different shades of blue + 3 green colors, but you can take one color - preferably two close ones. Straight from the can - if the paint is too thick, you need to dilute it a little with some water. Wait for it to dry - THREE.

* Dilute the white paint slightly with water (it should be like liquid sour cream), put the colored sneakers in a safe place (the place will soon become beautiful, but it will no longer be clean), put white paint on a thick soft brush and, closing your eyes, mentally call on the spirit of Pollock to bless you, spray chaotic white paint on sneakers. Change direction, moving around the shoe strictly COUNTER-CLOCKWISE (it’s best to do everything during the full moon - FOUR).

* Try to stop in time, it is always very difficult, but control yourself - FIVE.

You wait until it dries, peel off the tape, scrub where you need it, put in the laces, run outside and take pictures of your feet, then post it on Instagram (you can tag me there too, what’s there - hehe), collect likes, walk around happy and satisfied, owners of the one and only sneakers, and for almost nothing!

Thank you, Jackson, for being you and for my new sneakers!

Well, I'll go...)))

Py.Sy.: paints on fabric are supposed to be fixed after drying with an iron, but I didn’t do this, and (this is not my first painted sneakers) splashing through puddles in textile sneakers is not very common, nothing should happen to them. But if you are a perfectionist and like to do everything right, you can fix the design with a hot hair dryer.

For obvious reasons, many people love Converse sneakers. They are very comfortable and go with almost any outfit. And most importantly, they are the perfect blank canvas for any artist. Fabric can be colored using markers, paints or fabric dyes. The rubber parts of the sneakers can be painted with markers.

Steps

Using markers

Start with a blank canvas. Brand new sneakers are best suited for coloring. If you are unable to buy them, then you need to clean out the ones you already have. This way, the ink will take on and appear better on the fabric. Wipe the rubber parts with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol. The fabric part can be cleaned with a damp towel. Let the shoes dry before you proceed with further steps.

    • Most markers have a translucent pigment, so they will be best seen on white shoes. So if you're shopping for a new pair of Converse, try to choose white sneakers.
    • Remove the laces if you are going to paint the entire shoe. But if you wish, you can paint them too.
  1. Use permanent markers or fabric markers. Permanent markers are suitable for all parts of the shoe. Their translucent pigment will be best seen on white shoes. Fabric markers are only suitable for the fabric part of the sneaker. When used on rubber parts, the pigment can easily smear.

    • Make sure you buy the right type of fabric marker. If you have colored sneakers, use a marker designed for dark or colored fabric. On white sneakers you can use any fabric marker.
  2. Once you start dyeing your shoes, it will be much more difficult to erase any mistakes. Sketch your design on a piece of paper or piece of fabric, and then trace it with markers. Try making simple patterns such as lightning bolts, hearts or stars. You can also draw geometric patterns.

    • Before painting the rubber part of the shoe, you should also practice on a piece of paper first.
    • Before dyeing fabric, practice on a scrap of canvas, linen or cotton fabric. The texture of the fabric will give you an idea of what technique you need to use when painting on Converse.
  3. Using a simple pencil, transfer the drawing onto the sneakers. Do not put too much pressure on the pencil on white shoes so that it is not too visible. Use a white pencil on the surface of dark shoes.

Color the drawing - start with the lightest colors and end with the darkest. Depending on which marker you use, you may have to wait a while for the ink to dry completely before applying the next color. Don't start with dark shades. If you do this, the dark ink may bleed into the lighter colors, dulling them.

    • When using fabric markers designed for colored fabrics, shake the marker first and then press the tip onto a flat surface. This will fill the tip with paint. The ink will begin to flow down it, so do not press the marker too hard onto the surface of the sneaker.
  4. Wait for the paint to dry before you begin to outline the design, if you plan to do so at all. The outlines are optional, but they will highlight your design. Try using thicker lines on the main parts of the drawing and thinner ones on the smaller ones.

Spray the surface of your sneakers with shoe sealant or water repellent. You can also use acrylic sealant. Whatever you choose, in any case, this product must have a matte finish, otherwise your shoes will shine. This way you can protect your drawing and it will not be erased longer.

    • You do not need to seal the rubber parts of the sneakers if you have painted them. Keep in mind that your patterns will eventually fade into the rubber as you wear the shoe.
  5. Wait until the sealant has dried before lacing up your sneakers and wearing them again. Despite the sealant, the design must be handled carefully. Wear your shoes carefully and try not to get them wet or dirty.

    Ready.

Using paints

Remove the insoles from the shoes and apply tape to the rubber parts of the sneakers. You can only use this method on the fabric part of your shoes. Fabric paint or acrylic paints do not last very long on the rubber part of the sneakers. If you want to color the rubber parts, you will need to use permanent markers.

    • You don't need to unlace your sneakers if you're only going to paint the sides.
  1. Come up with a drawing design and practice on a piece of paper or piece of fabric. Once you start dyeing your shoes, it will be much more difficult to erase any mistakes. Draw a sketch of the design on paper or fabric, then paint it with acrylic or fabric paints using fine brushes.

    • Cotton, linen or canvas will help you imagine how to paint on Converse. The paper will shrink from the paint.
    • If the paint is too thick, thin it with a little water.
  2. Transfer the sketch onto the shoes using a pencil. Use light pressure to prevent the pencil from showing too much after the paint dries. Use a white pencil on the surface of dark shoes.

    • Simple designs such as stripes, stars or hearts will look best.
    • Try to portray your favorite character if you like cartoons or comics.
  3. When painting with acrylic paints, you must use a primer. This will brighten the paint colors and increase its lifespan. The primer must dry before you apply the next coat.

    • If you are using fabric paint, you will not need a primer.
  4. Color the drawing, starting with the largest elements. Draw the edges first, and then fill the center of the design with paint. You need to wait until the paint dries before adding small parts. For example, if you want to draw a ladybug, first paint the desired area red. Add dots only after the paint has dried. Keep in mind that some colors, such as yellow, will need to be applied in several layers to achieve a sufficiently vibrant shade.

Wait for the paint to dry before tracing the outline. You can do this with a thin, pointed brush or a black permanent marker.

Spray your sneakers with shoe sealant or water repellent. You can also use acrylic sealant. Whatever you choose, make sure the product is matte, otherwise the shoes will become shiny. The sealant will protect the drawing, and it will not be erased longer.

Remove the tape from the previously masked areas of the shoes after the sealant has dried and lace up the sneakers. Now you can wear them. Remember that even sealed shoes must be worn carefully. Try not to get your sneakers wet or dirty.

Using Dye

Take sneakers in white or cream colors. The dye is translucent. It adds a tint to an existing color. For example, if you try to dye a pair of blue shoes red or pink, you will end up with purple. However, you can paint any color shoe black.

Remove the laces from your shoes and cover the rubber parts with Vaseline or tape. This will protect the rubber surface from absorbing paint. This must be done even if you want to dye the laces as well. Later you will dip them in the dye along with the shoes. This will allow the paint to apply more evenly.

Fill a large bucket with hot water and add 1 cup (225 grams) salt and a tablespoon (15 ml) dish soap. Make sure the bucket is deep enough to fit your shoes.

Prepare the dye and then pour it into a bucket. Different manufacturers recommend adding different amounts, so follow the instructions on the bag or bottle. Typically liquid dyes do not require any preliminary preparation. When using powdered dye, you will first need to dissolve it in 2 cups (475 milliliters) of hot water.

Place your shoes in the bucket. If your shoes float, you need to weigh them down with something heavy. You can use a glass jar, bottle or even sticks for this. If you don't do this, the shoes will float to the surface and you won't be able to paint them evenly.

Leave the shoes in the dye water for 20 minutes. This will be enough for the paint to be absorbed into the fabric.
