The Orthodox holiday of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary means the great triumph of faith and the appearance to the World of the Mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Lord. Her appearance in the Light of God was a miracle, as was the immaculate conception, which revealed the Savior to the World.

History of the celebration

According to Tradition, the Virgin Mary was born in Jerusalem.

But in the Russian Orthodox Church there is a widespread version, which was universally adhered to by Saint Demetrius of Rostov, that Her birth into the world of God happened in Nazareth, where her parents Joachim and Anna lived.

Birth of the Virgin Mary

So... North of Jerusalem in the mountainous region near the Ezdrelon Valley lay the small town of Nazareth. This city, like its inhabitants, was not famous for anything significant, so there was an opinion among the Jews that nothing good could come from Nazareth.

But a married couple lived in this town; it was them who God chose to be the parents of the Mother of the Savior of the World. Coming from a royal family and the daughter of a high priest, Joachim and Anna were wealthy people, had wealth, servants and a household. But this did not prevent them from treating each other reverently, leading a God-fearing life, and showing acts of mercy. For these qualities, the townspeople loved the pious Christian family very much.

But the spouses were very depressed by the absence of children, and in those days it was a sign of God’s punishment (wrath). But the couple did not complain, they constantly begged for the gift of joy in life in the form of a long-awaited baby, although in their advanced years the birth of a child, in principle, was no longer possible.

The Virgin Mary and her parents

Angel's Message

One day Joachim withdrew into the desert to pray intensely and keep a strict fast. The righteous wife, recognizing the guilt of childlessness, grieved greatly and began to pray even more fervently to God for the gift of a child. And then a miracle happened - an Angel of the Lord descended from Heaven and announced to her that the prayer had been heard by the Creator and that a conception would soon take place, from which a daughter would be born into the family, blessed, above all earthly daughters, and ordered her to be named Maria.

The same Angel appeared to Joachim. He announced to him the imminent birth of his daughter. In response, the righteous husband promised that if it happened that Anna gave birth to a daughter, he would certainly give her to serve God.

The righteous man headed to Jerusalem, where Anna was waiting for him at the golden gates, and together they returned to Nazareth. And after the expiration of the pregnancy, the woman gave birth to a daughter, whom the parents named Mary, as the Angel ordered.

Joachim arranged a grand feast, to which many people were convened. During the feast, the father raised his daughter and asked the priests to bless her.

The meaning of the holiday

It was at a time when the world was experiencing a severe decline in moral values and there was a great need for a revival of faith that the Blessed Virgin was born. It was She who was chosen by the Creator to be the most worthy of the worthy in order to be the Mother of God and reveal to the world in the form of human nature the Son of God.

The birth of Mary brought the earthly world closer to the Kingdom of God, to the knowledge of truth and eternal life in Christ. And the Mother of God Herself was destined to be the merciful Intercessor of Orthodox Christians.

How to celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Since the 6th century, believers have rushed to churches where solemn services are held. People glorify God and the day when the Lord gave the world, in the form of the Most Pure Virgin, hope for the coming of the Savior to the world.

Housewives baked bread with the letters “P” and “B”, which meant “Nativity of the Virgin Mary”. They were distributed to all family members, relatives, friends, and kept under the icon of Jesus Christ until the day of His Nativity. It was believed that by eating a piece of this bread with prayer, it was possible to be cured of all kinds of ailments.

In the Holy Land, Jerusalem and Nazareth become centers of pilgrimage during these holidays. A huge stream of believers flocks to shrines associated with the earthly life of the Queen of Heaven. People especially strive to visit the source of the Virgin Mary and the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth, the Greek Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem. According to Tradition, it was built on the site where Mary’s parents’ house previously stood.

On this day, Heaven hears all the prayers of Orthodox Christians, so it is necessary to repent of sins, thank the Creator and prayerfully ask for the fulfillment of what is asked.

Important point! On the day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, you should not drink alcoholic beverages, meat or non-lenten foods. It's a fast day! Holiday customs: what can and should be done on this day

The Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the world is considered a women's holiday, when every lady should be revered as a continuator of the family.

Childless women attend a festive service, after which they arrange a dinner and invite the poor to the table, so that after the meal they pray for the hostess, who dreams of giving her a baby. It is believed that the prayers of the Mother of God for the gift of children, offered precisely on the day of Her Nativity, have special power.

Previously, this Mother of God holiday was considered the beginning of the new year. It was customary to light a torch and not extinguish it even at night. When the first one burned out, the next one was ignited and so on. In modern times, some believers adhere to this tradition: they constantly have a lamp burning near their icons, day and night.

The Day of the Nativity of the Mother of God began the matchmaking countdown: from this day on, matchmakers were sent to the houses of unmarried girls. On this day it is also good to have a wedding - the family will always be under the Protection of the Queen of Heaven.

From ancient times to the present day, there has been a tradition: women went to the pond early in the morning. It is believed that if a girl or woman washes her face before sunrise, the beauty of her face will remain until old age. Of course, there is something pagan in this, but there is no harm.

From the week of Christmas, housewives removed onions from the beds, and before it began, it was necessary to remove all other crops from the fields. Villagers sowed fields with rye, and beekeepers prepared hives for wintering.

Folk signs

September 21 is the day of the autumnal equinox. From this date, daylight hours gradually decrease, and nights, on the contrary, become longer. By the weather, people determined what the coming autumn and winter would be like.

Birds rise up into the sky - autumn will not come soon. If flocks of birds huddle close to the ground and look for food, then a harsh and hungry winter should be expected.

A clear sun on the Mother of God means the continuation of autumn and the preservation of warmth until October.

The morning sky is starry and clear - for the imminent onset of frost.

Fog at Christmas is a harbinger of rain. If it dissipates quickly, you should expect alternating rainy and clear weather.

Rain from early morning means bad weather for another 40 days and a cold winter.

On September 21, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated. The holiday is also called the Second Most Pure.

Every year on September 21, the Orthodox Church celebrates a great holiday - the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was erected in honor of the miraculous birth of the Virgin Mary from elderly parents - pious Anna and Joachim. The holiday was first mentioned in the 5th century.

There is little information about the Mother of God in the New Testament. The story of Her life was brought to us by legend, according to which the parents of the Virgin Mary came from the family of David. The Church calls them holy Fathers of God, because in the flesh they are the ancestors of Jesus.

Miraculously, the Divine Providence for the salvation of humanity manifested itself on Anna and Joachim: after 50 years of married life, childless Anna conceived and gave birth to the Virgin Mary. Even before the girl was born, the Angel gave her the name Maria. She became the only and most holy Virgin, Who was predicted to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel” (Is. 7:14).

history of the holiday

Like other Mother of God feasts, the establishment dates back to a relatively late time. The official introduction of this holiday is presumably attributed to the end of the 6th or beginning of the 7th century.

According to the author of an article in the English-language Catholic Encyclopedia (1913), the first mention of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the hymns of Roman the Sweet Singer, written in the period from 536 to 556. The appearance of the holiday is most likely connected with the increased veneration of the Mother of God after the Council of Ephesus under the influence of the later apocrypha. The festival appears to have originated in the early 6th century, initially in the Greek Church, and very soon after appeared in Rome and spread to their daughter churches.

The holiday was not widespread in the West and did not have a solemn service until the 12th-13th centuries. Only at the Council of Lyon (1245) did Pope Innocent IV make the octave of the holiday mandatory for the entire Western Church, and Pope Gregory XI (1370-1378) established a vigil (vigilia) with fasting and a special liturgical service for the holiday.

Merry Christmas to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Congratulations to the Orthodox people!
I wish you patience and joy,

On a clear day autumn leaves
The wind will lift you up in an instant,
Our Lady of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Forming a face in the sky.
Hail, Holy Virgin!
Hail, Joyful Mother!
In Your honor, as in spring May,
The sun will shine!

What fell like a lot -
Always an unbreakable plan!
On land, in water and in the sky ‒
The will of the Lord is firm!
God's mercy has appeared
She who is pure -
The Mother of God appeared
For the Birth of Christ!

Merry Christmas to the Blessed Virgin Mary
I congratulate you with all my heart!
Let her take care of you
May troubles pass by!

Only peace, health, good luck
I wish you at this hour
And great wealth to boot,
And happy, shining eyes!

The incense turned my head again,
I fell to my knees in front of the icon,
And again I asked God for everything,
So that my mind can be freed from eclipses.
You will meet the Mother of God on the way,
And I know that she will help you,
You just have to find faith again,
And he will leave immediately, which is alarming.

Beautiful poems about the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

That day long ago was no different
From the old days of pagan times.
It also began and ended
For many peoples and tribes.

The arrogant Caesar Augustus ruled the world,
The sea was noisy, the clouds were floating...
Who celebrated their birthday with a feast,
Who died in the bed of a poor man.

They walked, bought, sold,
And the most vigilant man that day
I barely managed to notice even during the day
The canopy that has risen over the whole earth.

Saving, kind, alive
She rose above the fallen world.
And people lived without suspecting
What is this - the Mother of God was born!
(monk Barnabas (Sanin))

We bow our knees before Her
And help with tea from God the Creator:
Be an intercessor for us all to the end!

In the glory of heaven You shine brightly
And you tearfully beg the Lord for us.
Your prayers are full of strength and hope -
And God has mercy on us today, as before.

Like an unquenchable and eternal candle,
You stand before God in heartfelt petition,
And the Savior will heed your sighs,
And leads serious sinners to repentance.

For Your name is a relief for the sick,
And for demons there is a scourge, and fire, and torment.
Let us cross ourselves, brothers, diligently
And in this evil and rebellious world

Let us raise our call to the Most Pure Virgin,
And God Almighty is ready to help us:
He will send us strength and courage -
And he will lead us into eternal peace after death.

We cry warmly to the Queen of Heaven,
We bow our knees before Her.
(St. Nicholas of Serbia)

Among the mountains, in a deep hollow,
keeping the legends of ancient years,
still shows off to this day
holy city of Nazareth.

In labors, incessant prayer
lived out his quiet life here
pious person -
Joachim with his wife Anna.

It's been in their hair for a long time
the gray hairs of old age will be silvered,
The fire in my eyes has long gone out,
wrinkles appeared on his forehead.

Strength weakens; but the supports are
alas, there are no honest elders,
and maybe I'll have to soon
childless they should leave the world,

and a generation will not see
their days of the coming of Christ,
when redemption is accomplished, -
prophets' bright dream.

And the heart of the elders is constantly
ached with secret melancholy,
and sometimes bitter tears
lila the yearning Anna.

But then other days have come
for the poor elders - finally
The Creator took pity on them, -
they had a daughter, Maria.

A wonderful baby is born
seemed like a sweet dream to the elders,
like a heavenly vision
a peaceful home dawned on them.

It seemed like angels were hovering
in the midst of this peaceful silence
and secretly inspired the heart
holy, joyful dreams.

Their life was like a path without a goal,
empty, sad and dark: -
at this baby's cradle
suddenly she changed.

Grief and sorrows are forgotten,
the sorrows of former days are forgotten;
they ran in quick succession
now their days, the dawn, are clearer.
(Priest A. Ushakov)

Mira Intercessor, Mother All-Singing!
I am before You with a prayer:
Poor sinner, dressed in darkness,
Cover with grace!

If trials befall me,
Sorrows, losses, enemies,
In difficult times of life, in moments of suffering,
I beg you, help me!

Spiritual joy, thirst for salvation,
Put it in my heart!
To the Kingdom of Heaven, to the world of consolation
Show me the straight path!
(Yu. Zhadovskaya)

To You, O Most Holy Mother,
I dare to raise my voice,
Washing your face with tears:
Hear me in this sorrowful hour.

Please accept my warmest prayers,
Deliver my spirit from troubles and evils,
Shed tenderness into my heart,
Guide me on the path of salvation.

May I be alien to my own will,
I am ready to endure everything for God,
Give me protection in my bitter fate,
Don't let me die in sadness.

You are the refuge of all the unfortunate,
Prayer book for us all;
Oh, protect me when I'm terrible
Let us hear God's voice of judgment.

When time closes eternity,
The sound of the trumpet will raise the dead,
And the book of conscience is all a burden
He will expose my sins.

You are a protection and hedge for the faithful;
I pray to You with all my soul:
Save me, my joy,
Have mercy on me!
(N. Gogol)

The holiday was established by the Church in the 4th century; the circumstances of this event were preserved by Tradition. This is the first twelfth holiday of the church year, for the church year begins on September 1 (old style).

History of the holiday.

In the small Galilean city of Nazareth lived an elderly couple - Joachim and Anna. Both spouses were righteous and pious. The holy spouses Joachim and Anna were childless for a long time and cried that they had no children. One day, on a great holiday, Joachim brought gifts to the Lord God to the Jerusalem Temple. But a priest named Issychar did not want to accept Joachim’s gifts, because he was childless, and children were considered a blessing from God.

Meanwhile, his wife, who was at home, also heard that the high priest in the temple refused to accept their gifts because they were childless. She also learned that her husband, grieving and crying, had gone into the desert, and she began to cry. Anna went into her garden, sat down under a laurel tree, sighed from the depths of her heart and, looking at the sky with eyes full of tears, noticed above, on the tree, a nest in which little chicks were squeaking. “Even birds have children, but we don’t have such consolation in old age,” thought Anna. This sight intensified her grief, and she began to cry again.

And suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to her. He said, “You will conceive and bear a Daughter, blessed above all. Through Her, all earthly peoples will receive God's blessing. Through Her, Salvation will be given to all people. Her name will be Mary."

At the same time, an angel appeared in the desert to Joachim. He said: “Joachim! God has heard your prayer, and He is pleased to bestow His grace on you. Your wife Anna will conceive and bear you a Daughter who will be a joy to the whole world. Here is a sign for you that I am telling you the truth: go to the temple in Jerusalem, and there, at the Golden Gate, you will find your wife Anna, to whom I told the same thing.”

Surprised Joachim, thanking God with all his heart, joyfully and hastily went to Jerusalem, to the temple. There, as the angel told him, he saw Anna praying to God at the Golden Gate, and told her about the angel. She also told her husband everything she had seen and heard about the birth of her Daughter. After praying to the Lord and worshiping Him in the temple, the couple returned home.

Nine months later, Anna gave birth to a Daughter, the purest and most blessed. Above everything that has ever been created, the beginning of our salvation, our intercessor before God. Heaven and earth rejoiced at Her birth. On the occasion of Her birth, Joachim brought great gifts and sacrifices to God, and received the blessing of the high priest, priests and all the people for having been worthy of God’s blessing. Then he held a great feast in his house, and everyone rejoiced and praised God.

The Holy Church rightly calls Joachim and Anna Fathers of God, because from their Most Holy Daughter, as we know, God Himself was born.

What was the Blessed Virgin Mary like?

She was a Virgin not only in body, but also in soul: humble in heart, circumspect in words, prudent, reticent, a lover of reading... hardworking, chaste in speech, considering not man, but God as the Judge of Her thoughts. Her rules were to be kind to everyone, to honor elders, not to envy equals, to avoid boasting, to be sensible, to love virtue. Has She ever offended her parents, even with the expression of her face, or been in disagreement with her relatives, been proud of herself in front of a modest person, laughed at the weak, or shirked the poor? She had nothing stern in her gaze, nothing imprudent in her words, nothing indecent in her actions: modest body movements, quiet gait, even voice; so Her appearance was a reflection of the soul, the personification of purity.

Traditions and rituals of the holiday.

Divine services are held in Orthodox churches.

In the folk calendar, the holiday is associated with the end of field work and the arrival of autumn. The event was celebrated noisily: with songs, dances and games. According to tradition, people thanked the Mother of God on this day for the harvest. At dawn, women gathered at the pond and greeted autumn with bread and jelly. The eldest was holding a loaf of bread, and the young ones danced around her and sang songs. Then the bread was broken and distributed to those present. When they arrived home, they fed it to the cattle.

It was customary to visit newlyweds on this day. After a rich treat for the guests, the young hostess showed off her new home and household to the women, and her husband showed the men his possessions and shared his plans for the future. The guests praised the young people and gave them useful advice.

Signs.

  • What is the weather like on the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, this will last another month.
  • If hares dig deep holes, then the winter will be cold.
