How to secure a child seat in a car. How to properly secure a car seat in a car

Not every car enthusiast thinks about safety when driving their car. Most drivers rely on the strong body of their car, driving skills, airbags and seat belts, and this is enough to confidently drive the car. But when a new “passenger” appears in the family, the issue of safety comes first. Now, in order to transport your child, you need to purchase a child seat. However, this does not mean that you can calm down on this. To be sure that your child is safe, you need to know how to install a child car seat correctly. Let's figure out what's what together.

How to install a child car seat in groups

Before we talk about how to install a child car seat correctly, it is necessary to understand what groups of child seats exist today. The thing is that certain types of such chairs have a clear design that can be installed only in one place. Let's figure out what types of chairs exist and how they are installed depending on the group to which they belong.

Group 0 and 0+

A child seat in a Group 0 car is used if the child’s weight does not exceed 10 kg. As a rule, such a chair is used for newborns, and after six months it will have to be replaced with a chair of another group. The chair itself is a basket, which is used in strollers. The only difference is that this seat has additional seat belts inside. This kind of car seat is installed in the rear seats in such a way that the child is perpendicular to the movement of the car. For additional safety, the car seat is secured with standard car seat belts.

A group 0 child seat becomes unusable too quickly, so there is an improved version - 0+. The difference is that such chairs, as a rule, can withstand up to 13 kg. Therefore, you can transport a child up to 1 year of age and only then buy a new seat. In addition, the chairs of this group are installed with their back to the movement, which has a positive effect on the child’s neck and spine. The advantage of group 0+ seats is that they can be installed in the front seat.

Group 1

If your child is already able to sit upright, then it’s time to switch to a child seat in a Group 1 car. It must be installed facing the direction of travel of the car. Until your child reaches a weight of 15-18 kg, you can safely sit him in this seat without worrying about safety while driving.

Group 2-3

A group 2 child seat in a car is very rare, since many manufacturers prefer to combine groups 2 and 3 in one. In this case, you receive a child car seat without internal belts. Now, for fixation, car seat belts are used, which pass through special holes in the seat. It’s not even worth talking about the comfort of such chairs, because most of them have a clearly adjusted angle of inclination for your child to sleep well.

Group 3 or booster

Boosters are the name given to group 3 child seats. It can’t even be called a chair anymore, because the booster has a solid structure and is just a seat. There is no side protection and they are attached very unreliably. Although manufacturers prove that they can be used for children from 4 years old, we would argue whether such chairs can be used at all.

Which car seat is best?

Today these are all existing classes of children's car seats, but as practice shows, there are many more of them. Manufacturers have learned to competently combine several classes in one chair. These chairs are of course more expensive, but in the end they save you money. After all, if in 1-2 years you have to change at least three chairs, you can buy one chair once, which will last you 2-3 years.

When choosing a child car seat, you need to take into account things such as the height and weight of the child, the method of fastening and other important factors that allow you to make the right choice. There is probably no definite answer to the question “which car seat is best?” Each child seat has its pros and cons, and your goal is to determine the best option for you and your child.

How to attach a child seat?

Based on the mounting methods, car seats for children can be divided into three groups. Each seat has its own mounting method, and all of them are widely used in car seats. Which mounting method is right for you is up to you to choose. In turn, we will try to tell you how to attach a child seat of a particular class.

  1. A seat secured with seat belts. These seats are secured in the car using standard passenger seat belts. Most often, chairs of this type have special grooves into which the seat belt is pulled. A definite advantage of such a system is that it is a universal mounting method suitable for all cars. The downside is that there is no single instruction on how to install such chairs, but for each chair, as a rule, instructions are attached.
  2. Seat with ISOFIX fastening. Child car seats with ISOFIX mountings are attached directly to the car body. To do this, in the car in the back row between the back and the seat there are special brackets into which the mount is inserted. This is also a fairly reliable method of fastening, however, not all cars are equipped with such brackets. That is why, when choosing a car seat, you should pay attention to the way it is attached.
  3. Chair with Latch type fastening. The Latch type fastening on a car child seat is a strap with something like an anchor at the end. How to install a Latch-type child car seat? It’s quite simple - the strap stretches over the back of the seat and clings to the body bracket with an anchor. This type of fastening, again, is not suitable for all cars, so you need to check in advance whether such a bracket is in your car.

How to fasten a child seat?

In the review, we managed to discuss classes of child seats, dividing them according to the age and weight of the child, the type of seat, as well as the method of fastening. When choosing a child seat of one class or another, you determine in advance how to fasten the child seat, because all this is specified in the instructions. The situation is completely different with where exactly to place a child seat in the car.

Of course, as we said earlier, the future location of the chair depends on the class itself (0, 0+, 1, etc.). But in which part of the cabin will it be safest for your child to be? And as practice shows, the safest place in the event of an accident is the rear right seat, as well as the rear seat in the middle. If you were able to correctly install the child seat in this place, you can be sure that your child is completely safe. We hope that we were able to answer the question of how to install a child car seat correctly.

High speeds on highways are dangerous for all participants traffic. Car seat belts are designed taking into account the size of adults.

They are not suitable for newborns, children under 12 years of age or those who weigh less than 36 kg and are less than 1.5 m tall.

For the safety and long, fulfilling life of their children, as well as to comply with traffic regulations clause 22.9, all parents must know how to secure a child seat in a car.

Mounting methods

A child car seat is a restraint device installed in a vehicle and intended for children. It is designed to ensure the safety of the little passenger both during an accident and during sudden maneuvering or braking.

The effectiveness of the device directly depends on how correctly it was installed and how the child was restrained.

Instructions for installing child car seats are located on the car seat itself. They are made in the form of stickers with illustrations.

A side, but very useful function of the device is to ensure the comfort of the child while the car is moving.

The safety of the baby depends on the quality of the chair's fixation.

Gradation of car seats depending on the height and age of the passenger

Children's car seats are conventionally divided into 5 subgroups (see table).

Table - Conditional division of child restraint devices into subgroups

The first two groups are infant carriers, providing a reclining position. Children are secured with belts with soft elastic pads.

Groups 3-5 – transformable chairs, allowing you to change the height of the backrest according to the height of the passenger, have several positions (“sleep” and “wake”). They are attached to the car seat with seat belts.

Features of installing car seats

Infant carriers or car seats are installed on the front seat or rear sofa along or against the direction of travel of the car.

The safest place to install a car seat is considered to be the central place in the back.

Most seats are installed both against and in the direction of travel of the car

When installing a car seat on the front passenger seat, you must:

  • make sure that there is no connected airbag. If it is not turned off, it needs to be turned off at the service station. Otherwise, in the event of an accident, it will open and press the cradle against the back of the chair;
  • move the infant carrier to the “reclining” position and place it against the direction of the car;
  • move the chair back as far as possible to move it away from the glass;
  • Make sure that it is securely fastened with a standard seat belt.

When secured, the seat belt should fit around the child's chest and hips. If it passes higher - at the level of the neck or in the abdomen - you should definitely use a lifting seat (booster) or a car seat. When the device becomes small, its back is removed, and the remaining seat is secured with a seat belt along with the passenger sitting on it.

The permissible play of the device after installation is no more than 2 cm.

The booster is also secured with standard seat belts.

Car seats are attached in two ways:

  • standard seat belts;
  • via the Isofix system.

Fastening with standard car seat belts

Universal car seats for children can be installed in almost all cars and secured with the existing seat belts. In the domestic Lada, there are no fasteners on the rear seats, despite the presence of seats for them.

Self-installation of seat belts is prohibited. This is considered a serious change in the design of the machine, so installation of belts is possible only in official workshops.

Car seats usually have their own harness system, but booster seats and booster seats do not.

Before purchasing a car seat, you should check whether it fits on the car seat and whether the seat belts are long enough to freely wrap around the device with a child sitting in it. The length of the belt is especially important for infant carriers, which are encircled almost along the entire perimeter. Extending the belts yourself is prohibited.

Isofix fastenings

Fixation using the Isofix system

Fastening Isofix child car seats requires the presence of special built-in fasteners both on the holding device itself and on the car seats. Since 2011, Isofix has been mandatory for all cars manufactured in Europe.

Isofix locks are universal, that is, car seats of any brand are compatible with any car equipped with similar fasteners.

The Isofix car seat is equipped with rails with locks at the end. The fastener is made of durable metal. Special brackets (U-shaped hinges) must be rigidly mounted into the car seats, installed 280 mm from each other. You can find out about the availability of such fasteners either from the car’s instructions or from an authorized dealer.

Almost all models of car seats with Isofix can also be installed using car belts if the car is not equipped with this system.

The technology for installing a chair with Isofix is as follows::

  • locate the Isofix brackets located at the base of the back of the car seat;
  • bring the brackets mounted into the lower part of the back of the child car seat closer to them;
  • use special tongues on the locks to grab the staples;
  • a correctly completed connection is indicated by a characteristic click.

Isofix - mounting diagram

Dismantling is carried out by unlocking the locks.

With the Isofix system, children who weigh more than 15 kg must be fastened with standard car seat belts. Without them, it is permissible to use only baby seats of groups 1-3.

The media file shows in detail how to secure a child restraint.

Additional accessories

The modern generation of vehicles is mostly equipped with special brackets required for the 3rd attachment point. It is used to secure the “anchor” belt (top tether).

Structurally, it is an arch with a hook located on top of the back of the car seat. It varies in length. The hook is used to grab a bracket located behind the back of the sofa, on the ceiling or at the bottom of the trunk. The “anchor” belt reduces the load on the standard fastening of the car seat and reduces the effect of a sudden and sharp impact during emergency braking.

The mounting locations for the anchor belt brackets are marked with special stickers.

A similar function is performed by the floor stop, which should prevent the car seat from “nodding” at the moment of sudden braking. It is mounted against the direction of movement.

It is not as effective as an "anchor" belt. Makes the protective structure larger, but does not require additional devices for mounting in the machine body.

Detailed installation plan for the model with top tether

Which mounting method is better?

A universal chair is necessary if there is no personal transport when you have to use the services of taxi drivers.

The main problem with such devices is the complexity of fastening, when the seat belts must be inserted into the grooves of the restraint device in a certain way, which differs from different manufacturers. An installation error can lead to a sharp decrease in the reliability of the device.

The Isofix system is recognized as the safest and most convenient method of attaching child car seats, as it eliminates errors in their installation. But such products are more expensive.

When installing car seats with both types of fastenings, car seat belt tensioners play an important role in the level of safety of a small passenger. If for infant carriers with Isofix their presence or absence is completely unimportant, then for models of groups 4-5 this is already a significant factor that sharply reduces the level of child safety.

top tether scheme

Retensioners are necessary to firmly secure seat belts in the moment of a car impact. If they are not present, the seat will fly forward during an accident, which can be fatal.

Whatever anchorage system the child car seat is purchased with, it is important that it is installed correctly. Only then, with strict adherence to traffic rules, can you be confident in the safety of the child.

In a family where they are used to traveling by car, transporting the baby is a separate item of necessary safety measures and expenses. The fact is that according to the law, it is prohibited to transport a baby under a certain age and weight without a restraint device. As the child grows, it is necessary to change the car seat to another or booster. The pricing policy of the latest invention brings it to a leading position in the ranking of budget devices for the safe ride of children in a car.

A booster is a type of restraint device in the form of a seat with small armrests, but without a supporting back and headrest. The purpose of the design is to lift the small passenger, and then the standard seat belt will not pinch his neck (which happens if the child is simply transported in a car seat).

What the law says

According to the 2017 edition of the traffic rules, children under 12 years of age must travel in a car in a special restraint device that is suitable for their age and height and weight.

This is interesting. Article 12.23 Part 3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses states that transporting children without special restraint devices is punishable by a fine of 3 thousand rubles.

However, any homemade pillows and pads are not included in the recommended devices for transporting small passengers. In other words, the design to ensure the safety of a child in a vehicle must be certified and meet or exceed federal or state transportation standards.

Rules for using a booster depending on the height, weight in kilograms and age of the child

Like other types of devices designed to carry small passengers, it has clear parameters for use according to the age, height and weight of the child. To understand the features of its use, it’s worth first understanding the categories of restraint devices:

  • 0 - car seats for newborns and infants up to six months. Designed for body weight up to 10 kg;
  • 0+ - car carriers for babies up to one year old. Designed for body weight up to 13 kg;
  • 1 - car seats used from one and a half to 3 years. Can withstand body weight of 9–18 kg;
  • 2 - devices for preschoolers from 3 to 7 years old with a weight of 15 to 25 kg;
  • 3 - products for children aged 6–12 years, weighing from 22 to 36 kg.

Sometimes you hear about models with a backrest, but in fact such products are group 2/3 car seats, which, if necessary, can be transformed by removing the back part.

Booster in comparison with other restraint devices (car seat framed and frameless, FEST)

For long trips, the most suitable and comfortable seat will be a frame car seat. In terms of safety indicators, it also ranks first. All other restraint options do not provide lateral protection for the head and body.

If we talk about a frameless car seat and FEST, then the first device has shown its unreliability during independent tests (the belts that fasten the child break at the moment of a collision), and the second leads to injuries to the abdominal cavity (the belt raised by the adapter passes not over the reeds, but through the passenger’s stomach ) and does not protect against the diving effect.

Some parents install both a booster and FEST. Such reinsurance is not a violation, but it is not particularly advisable either.

Gallery: types and photos of child restraint devices

FEST is designed for the correct fixation of standard seat belts, but it does not provide the required level of protection. The booster is convenient to use for short trips, including in a taxi. Frameless car seats are a choice in favor of savings, but at the expense of safety.

How to choose a booster for your child

When deciding to buy a booster, you need to take into account as many nuances as possible so that the purchase serves you faithfully for several years. To do this, pay attention to the important parameters:

  • fastening method;
  • the material from which the product is made;
  • passenger comfort level.

Mounting methods in the car

The booster can be secured in a car in 2 ways, depending on the device model:

  • standard seat belts;
  • Isofix system.

Standard seat belts: instructions

In this case, the small passenger himself plays the role of securing the device.

The seat belt must be placed under the booster armrests

Instructions:

  1. Place the restraint device on the car seat.
  2. We sit the child down.
  3. We pass the lower ribbon of the standard belt under the armrests of the booster along the child’s legs.
  4. Use a diagonal belt to secure the child’s body to the back of the seat.
  5. We check that the belt does not pass over the passenger's neck.

Isofix system to secure the device in the cabin

If your car has Isofix hinges, then you should choose a booster with the same type of installation. In this case, the rigidity and reliability of the grip of the holding device is ensured by fastening to the car body. In addition, seat belts provide additional protection and support.

Installing a booster on a seat with Isofix is very simple: you need to insert the guides into the brackets located between the backrest and the rear seat cushions until it clicks.

Latch is an American analogue of the European isofix. The difference between this type of installation is that instead of guides, fastening with belts to brackets is used.

The Isofix system provides a more rigid fixation of the device

What is the “pillow” made of: material that manufacturers can use

  1. Pressed foam. In terms of price, these models compare favorably with others. Many parents are also inclined to choose this type of booster because it is lightweight, meaning it can easily be taken with you on a taxi ride. However, sometimes during an accident such a structure breaks, which, of course, will not protect the baby from injury.
  2. Plastic frame. Provides fairly high protection in emergency situations, is not too heavy, and the price is not much different from foam ones.
  3. Metal frame. These products have only two disadvantages compared to others - heavy weight and relatively high cost.

The safety class of the booster depends on the material of manufacture. The highest is for devices with a metal frame, the lowest is for foam plastic ones. But in any case, all parts for an increased level of protection must have soft linings so that the child does not get injured because of them.

Child's comfort

To evaluate which booster is more comfortable, it is recommended to take your child with you, because the products differ in width, length and height. The baby should be soft and comfortable, even in a bulky winter jacket. The fabric with which the device is sheathed is also considered from the same position. Choose breathable material to prevent the passenger from getting too hot in summer. The ideal option is removable covers.

If you plan to travel more or less long distances, then perhaps it makes sense to pay attention to models with additions (for example, coasters for glasses, a table). But often such improvements create more difficulties on the road - the child wants to use all the possibilities, and doing this awkwardly provokes the appearance of stains in the car interior.

Most manufacturers provide a retractable cup holder so that it can be hidden in the case if necessary.

Most parents leave positive reviews about boosters, noting that it is very comfortable for their child to ride in them.

We have a booster. I fasten it in the center with a central belt, the cross fits well, and does not pinch my neck, like an adult. Fixes perfectly, doesn’t even move on sharp turns. It is convenient because it does not hinder the child’s movement, and there are armrests.

Booster operating rules

When purchasing and installing a booster, you must take into account the basic rules and features of its use.

Where to put it: front or rear seat

The booster can be placed on the front or back seat of the car, always in the direction of travel. However, in practice, quite often, road patrol inspectors, taking advantage of the lack of education of citizens, fine for installing a restraint device next to the driver. In this case, you need to refer to Chapter 22.9 of the Traffic Regulations, which describes possible options for placing devices for transporting children, including boosters.

Still, the safest location for any type of restraint for transporting a baby is in the center of the seat, located in the back. It is there that your child will be maximally protected from a side impact, as well as in a frontal collision, when the driver, reflexively obeying the instinct of self-preservation, turns the steering wheel in such a way as to protect himself.

If you fix the booster on the seat next to the driver, then turn off the airbags on this side, as during sudden braking they can deploy and injure the child.

Video: booster crash test in a side impact

Features of use: how to fasten and transport a passenger with maximum safety

There are two ways to secure your child, depending on his weight:

  • the lumbar belt goes under both armrests of the booster, and the shoulder belt only on one side, if the baby weighs between 15–25 kg;
  • The lumbar belt runs under both booster armrests, and the shoulder belt is located over one of them if the passenger's body weight reaches 22 kg.

The position of the shoulder strap depends on the weight of the child

Manufacturers of baby carriers offer booster seats with loops that pull the seat belts further away from the face. They are attached to a diagonal belt behind the passenger's back at shoulder level. But they often burst during an accident, so they do not fulfill their purpose.

When transporting newborn children, mothers and fathers bear a lot of responsibility. A safe trip can only be guaranteed by a car seat that is properly secured in the rear seat - its straps securely secure the baby and ensure that he is held in the seat.

What is it for?

In 2007, our country established new requirements for moving children in a car, in particular, a rule was introduced for the mandatory placement of children in special restraining mechanisms - this standard is enshrined in clause 22.9 of the traffic rules. In order to protect your baby from various kinds of dangers and at the same time not become a lawbreaker, you should purchase a baby carrier. Its design and operational features must be selected so as to match the child’s height and age.

Many were outraged by the adoption of this law - since it leads to unnecessary expenses and inconvenience, however, it is necessary to clearly understand that a child car seat is by no means a whim of our legislators and is not at all some kind of luxury item, the installation of which can be neglected if desired.

This is a special design that protects the baby from injuries that he may receive in the event of an accident, sudden braking and other emergency situations on the road.

There are statistics according to which in cars with an infant seat installed, the likelihood of a child being injured is reduced by 90%. But this effect can only be achieved if the device is secured in accordance with all rules and technical requirements. Car seats are a type of car seat that is used for a child under the age of six months, since in this period babies differ in their anatomical features.

The musculoskeletal system of infants is not yet fully formed, so transporting them using a regular chair is quite difficult. In the first months of life, the bones of babies do not have sufficient rigidity, and cartilaginous tissue predominates in the skeleton; the proportions of the baby also differ from the proportions of older children: the mass of the head corresponds to approximately a fifth of the baby’s total weight, and this despite the fact that his neck, on the contrary, is very thin, underdeveloped. In such a situation, any sudden shaking creates a serious risk of injury. Car seats are characterized by certain dimensions and at the same time they are clearly “big” for infants in the infancy period.

The car seat is made in the form of a regular cradle; it can accommodate a newborn who has not yet learned to hold his head and control all active movements of his arms and legs. There is also a small nuance - the respiratory processes of infants are not perfect, they largely depend on the position in which the child is located, so it is extremely important that in the car he is in the most physiological seat possible. When the baby lies in it, his chin is lowered; in this position, no interference is created for full breathing, and there is no increased pressure on the unformed spinal column.

It is worth keeping in mind that in the first months of life, children cannot adequately perceive the surrounding reality, so they require constant attention and control from relatives. During this period, a car seat is much more comfortable and safer for the baby than a car seat. A car cradle is more profitable for more practical reasons - if a child is often transported in the fall and winter, then the cradle will be much warmer for him.

Well, don’t forget that no matter how much you want to save money, you still have to buy a cradle - don’t discount this fact.

Types of chairs

Car seats come in the following types:

  • category 0– applies from birth to 13 kg;

Category 0 assumes that the baby is in a lying position, and in a type 0+ infant carrier he is reclining, with orthopedic bolsters placed under his back and neck, and the limbs are slightly elevated. This category is similar in principle to car seats, but differs from them in the presence of a carrying handle and the ability to fix it on the wheels of a stroller. These days, the choice of infant carriers is quite large. Therefore, when purchasing a device for your baby, you should consider the following important nuances:

  • First of all, you need to take into account the height and weight of the child;
  • it is better to focus on the fabrics from which the cradle is made - it is optimal that all materials used are exclusively breathable and hypoallergenic; it is desirable that the infant carrier be equipped with a ventilation system;
  • many people buy used infant carriers - this device is quite expensive and a second-hand product allows you to save a lot, but this can only be done if there is absolute confidence in the reliability of the design;
  • it is important to clarify whether there is room for an insert for the baby’s head, and also to find out how many positions the cradle can take;
  • Separately, you should pay attention to the product labeling; for example, the ECE R44/04 indication indicates that the baby car seat meets all safety requirements.

It is worth considering the most popular and high-quality brands of infant carriers.

Roemer Baby-Safe Sleeper

This is a unit belonging to category 0. It is designed to transport children weighing up to 13 years due to its increased dimensions, which correspond to 30x43x62 cm. The weight of the infant carrier is 7 kg. The structure is fixed in the car using two standard three-point belts. Thanks to the same belts inside the unit, the baby’s body is securely fastened, thereby giving him maximum immobility.

Among the advantages of the model are the following:

  • frame strength;
  • the internal lining provides good absorption of kinetic energy in the event of an impact;
  • the presence of a handle, which acts as additional protection in the event of a side collision;
  • the ability to remove the inner liner, which effectively supports the child’s body;
  • the position of the backrest can be adjusted;
  • The car seat is made of hypoallergenic material, which is easily cleaned of dirt by machine washing.

Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix

Such a cradle can only be used until the baby reaches one year of age, until its weight exceeds 13 kg. This model is fixed against the front or rear seat and has two mounting options. The advantages of the model are as follows:

  • ease of fastening;
  • light weight - only 3.5 kg;
  • extended sides that protect the neck from side impacts;
  • the presence of a handle that provides additional safety in frontal collisions;
  • centralized belt tensioning mechanism;
  • compliance with quality requirements ECE-R44/04.

Maxi-Cosi Peb

This cradle is a more modern variation of the previous model. It makes it possible to transport children weighing up to 18 kg, so it can be used up to one and a half, and in some cases even up to 2 years. The device has a support leg that rests on the floor of the car, thereby ensuring its maximum stability. This type of carrier is equipped with the FamilyFix system, thanks to which the cradle can be installed in a matter of moments using a special button, which provides additional secure fastening and a physiological position for the child.

BOB

This cradle is intended for the little ones - it can only be used at a very early age, as a rule, no more than 9 months. It is quite compact, its dimensions are 74x32x20 cm, and it weighs only 3.2 kg. This product is versatile - it can be installed on the chassis of a stroller and move the baby both in cars and on foot. The model has built-in adapters, thanks to which it can easily be switched to car seat mode.

ForKiddy

These infant carriers can be purchased to transport babies from the moment of birth. The model fully complies with current European standards, and various crash tests rated it 4 points out of 5. The advantage of this chair is in an anatomically shaped pillow, which helps maintain the child’s back in a comfortable position. The cradle is made of soft material; soft pads and inserts are glued to the straps.

However, such products are quite difficult to detach from the seat, so it is easier to fix them once and leave them on the seat, and carry the baby on the streets in a different way.

Graco Junior Baby Sport Luxe

This model is ideal value for money. The brand is recognized as the absolute leader among products in the mid-price segment. This cradle is designed to move children from birth, so the kit necessarily includes an orthopedic insert that fixes the head in the desired state, which prevents stress on fragile neck muscles and spine.

All internal belts included in the package have a three-point device. A nice bonus is the option to rock the baby and a visor that protects from sunlight. The body of such a car seat is additionally protected on the sides. This cradle can be installed on the stroller chassis. It has a handle that makes it easier for parents to carry the cradle, and is small in size and light in weight.

"Aegis"

The infant carriers of the domestic company “Egida” have received quite good reviews. They are mounted backwards and held in the desired position using a special belt. The fastenings located inside have 3 points of contact, which makes placing the child as safe as possible. For a more comfortable stay for the baby, the device is equipped with an awning that protects from the sun, a portable handle and an orthopedic pillow under the head. Reinforced protection is installed on the sides.

Cybex

This car seat is recognized as one of the best in its segment. It fully meets the basic requirements and wishes of young parents, in addition, it is considered as comfortable and convenient as possible. This model received the highest ratings based on numerous crash tests. A unique feature of the infant carrier is its specific denim color in several shades.

It is very important that this carrier has an anatomical back and a physiological headrest, the latter having 11 different positions. Such parameters make it possible to have a beneficial effect on the correct fixation of the child and his level of comfort. The fastening is quite strong, but at the same time it gently presses the baby and creates additional protection from sharp collisions. The disadvantages of the product include its inflated cost, which is not affordable for every young family.

Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix

This device for transporting infants belongs to the premium segment due to the exceptional quality of the materials used, as well as the increased level of convenience and safety of a small child during transportation. In our country, this model became the winner in the “Parents’ Choice” category in 2016 - this speaks better than any words that the cradle of this brand has earned the trust of many thousands of customers.

The safety of the baby is ensured by reinforced fastenings of the side panels and a special three-point baby restraint system. Additionally, there is a sun canopy, a handle for carrying a child and a special pocket for storing small items. If necessary, a cover made of soft material can be easily washed and removed from any dirt in a washing machine.

In a car, this cradle should be placed in the back seat, where it is secured with a regular belt.

Seat installation

Installing a car seat for very young children has some features. The cradle is installed exclusively in the back seat for the following reasons:

  • The car seat, unlike the chair, is characterized by quite impressive dimensions, since the baby lies in it lying down;
  • fastening the cradle requires the use of several seat belts, but in the front seat there is only one and it is impossible to securely fasten the cradle;
  • In addition, attaching a baby carrier to the front seat will greatly disturb the driver, since he will be constrained by the size of the device and the need to constantly be distracted by the baby.

To be fair, it should be noted that there is no consensus on which seat in the car is considered the safest. For many years, experts have argued that this is the rear seat on the left - that is, immediately behind the driver. The logic here is simple - in the event of an emergency, the driver begins to automatically twist the steering wheel in order to protect himself, therefore, the passenger behind also receives certain benefits. However, some time ago, American scientists proved that The safest place in the car is the rear middle seat.

According to statistics, over several years it has been revealed that the rear seats are 60–85% safer than the front ones, while the safety of the middle ones is higher than those located on the sides by 20–25%. This is explained by the fact that in the event of a collision, the middle seat is not subject to compression, but the same cannot be said about the sides.

Mounting options

Depending on the modification of the infant carrier, there are: the following are the main ways to attach it to the seat:

  • in the direction of travel of the car;
  • against traffic;
  • fastening in both directions.

The second option is considered the safest. As for combined devices, at first they are installed against the movement - until the baby grows up and his weight reaches 13 kg, and as the child grows, the cradle is moved against the movement - this option is optimal up to 18 kg of weight. However, in most cases, young parents prefer two separate chairs instead of a single combined one.

The car seat is fixed along the car seat in such a way that the child is transported sideways. Such carriers, as a rule, completely occupy the free space of the rear seat and are secured with two seat belts to the inside of the car.

In such a cradle, the child is placed in a lying position, and across his chest there is a fairly wide fastening - a seat belt.

It has been established that the optimal place to install a car carrier is the seat is directly behind the driver. The baby can be placed in front only as a last resort or in a situation where the mother is forced to transport the baby alone. In this case, the child is in front of his eyes and the parent keeps his condition in the zone of attention, feels calmer because he sees the child.

It is worth keeping in mind that the infant carrier can only be installed in the front seat when the airbag is disabled.

The most popular fastening option is fixation with seat belts. By the way, for cheap economy class models this option is the only possible one. To secure the infant carrier with these straps, you must use Isofix straps. They are installed on most modern vehicles. The belt is fixed in such a way that the lower part of the chair is pressed tightly and fixes the backrest vertically, providing a reliable and durable fastening.

Due to the wide variety of models, the design features of the car seat body can vary significantly, and as a result, the mechanism for pulling them through the grooves also varies. It is worth noting that if such fasteners are used for purposes other than their intended purpose, their effectiveness is noticeably reduced. The disadvantages of this method of fixation include a rather inconvenient method of fastening and unfastening the seats.

In addition, if the tension level is weakened, such belts may tighten, which is contrary to existing safety standards. In 1990, the International Committee for Standardization introduced a general standard for fixing infant carriers in cars - Isofix. European countries have legal requirements to include this locking system in all machines sold.

This type of fixation consists of two main elements - staples made of metal. They are attached to the body of the vehicle at a distance of 28 cm relative to each other and are located strictly between the back of the rear seat and the cushion in the passenger area. Typically, the placement of these elements is indicated by the corresponding signature - Isofix and supplemented with a picture depicting the baby in the cradle.

The installation of such a system should be specified in the vehicle user manual or at an authorized auto center when purchasing a car. The basic area of use for this type of fastening is type 0+ devices, where the baby is securely secured with seat belts. They can withstand body weight up to 18 kg.

In the USA, a different principle applies, which, however, is an analogue of Isofix - this is Latch. Its difference lies in the fact that here belts are installed with a specified mechanism of fixation to the brackets, and not just guides. In addition, there are additional fasteners such as:

  • supporting leg– it is also called a “telescopic stop” – it is required for the strongest possible fixation of the specified position of the infant carrier; such a mechanism is most often mounted together with the Isofix mechanism and is based on a simple seat for children;
  • stubborn leg made in the form of two interlocking metal tubes on the cradle platform and allows you to adjust the required length for full rest on the bottom of the car with further rigid grip;
  • Infants are transported in a car seat in a lying or reclining position, and the second option is more desirable after 3 months, since in this case the head and butt have a fulcrum. The optimal angle is 30–40 degrees. If the angle is greater, this significantly reduces safety in frontal collisions. If the angle is smaller, then impacts create an increased load on the baby’s spine. In addition, this position interferes with the normal functioning of the respiratory system.

    In the first three months of a child's life, his head needs additional fixation. For this purpose, special orthopedic cushions are used, which are placed on both sides of the baby’s head. Some parents use a regular stroller carrier instead of a car seat. This is a big mistake, since such cradles have low safety indicators. In such a setup, the child is in an unstable position, dangles when moving and can fly out of his “chair” during any sudden stop.

    When using a car seat for infants, the following standards apply:

    • a traditional car seat is placed on the back seat in such a way that the baby’s head is located in the direction opposite to the door, which will protect the baby from injury in the event of a side impact;
    • there should be no foreign objects on the seat where the cradle is installed - during movement and emergency braking, they can get into the cradle and harm the child;
    • if the size of the standard belts is not enough, then they must be replaced at a specialized service center;
    • It is not allowed to fix the infant carrier with a two-point belt, or with a faulty fastening;
    • It is not allowed to transport a child in a cradle that has been in an accident - in this case there is a high probability of damage to the fastening mechanisms;
    • You should monitor the baby’s weight - if it is higher than acceptable for each specific car seat model, the seat needs to be changed.

    A car seat is a mandatory attribute for transporting children in a car, regardless of whether it is a personal car or a taxi. This device allows you to ensure maximum safety for the baby in the event of a collision, as well as during an emergency maneuver and forced braking. At the same time, it is extremely important that the seat is securely and firmly fixed in the cabin, and that the baby is fastened properly. For this purpose, infant carriers are equipped with various stickers, which serve as a kind of instruction and describe the method of securing the child.

    Using an infant carrier allows the baby to travel comfortably in a comfortable physiological cradle and protects him from the risk of injury.

Getting around the city by car when you have a child, especially a newborn, is much more convenient. But don't forget about safety. That is why there are certain rules for transporting children, supported by articles of law. And the main thing is that the baby must be in a car seat. But when entering a children's goods store, young parents are often confused: which device to choose, how they differ, how to attach them, and whether a certain model is suitable for their car.

What is a baby car seat, what age is it intended for children?

Transporting children in a car without special equipment is dangerous, according to the law Russian Federation, for this the driver faces a fine of 3,000 rubles. To reduce risks, special devices have been developed, which are attached to the car seat and in which the child feels comfortable and is completely safe.

The baby’s skeletal system is very fragile: from birth to one year the skeleton mainly composed of cartilage tissue. The baby’s neck is a very vulnerable place: even slight but sharp jolts can lead to serious injuries. Therefore, the use of a car seat is mandatory.

Soft or hard carrier, special stroller block for transporting a baby in a car

Some parents prefer not to buy a special car seat, but to replace it with a child carrier or a cradle from a stroller. Experts say this is wrong and in many cases unsafe:

Where and how a car seat can be installed in a car to ensure the safety of the child

The location and direction of the infant carrier depends on its model and category:

  • parallel to the seat;
  • against the movement of the car;
  • in the direction of movement;
  • round trip.

The safest place is behind the driver's seat, which is where it is best to install a baby carrier.

How to position and secure a category 0 carrycot

A category 0 car seat should only be placed in the rear of the car so that the baby rides sideways. It is secured with basic seat belts, which do not allow it to move. The device takes up most of the back seat.

The car seat is attached to the back seat of the car

To keep the baby safe in the event of a sharp push or blow, there are special belts inside the cradle that are fixed on the baby’s chest. Physiologically, such models, where the baby is in a horizontal position, are the most convenient, especially for premature babies who have a very weak skeletal system.

Straps for securing the infant carrier in the car

The car seat has a special mount for installation in the car. It is also worth considering the fact that not all car models have seat belts in the rear seat. In devices of category 0 and 0+ they are included, which is very convenient.

How can a car carrier be installed and fixed 0+

Car seats of category 0+ are attached only against the movement of the car, in order to ensure safety for the baby in the event of sudden braking or impact and protect him from injury. It is allowed to install such models not only in the back, but also in the front seat. For example, if one parent is traveling with the child, then it is better to secure the carrier in front, so the baby will see mom or dad, and the driver will not be distracted by turning back to look at the baby.

When installing a car seat in front, you need to turn off the airbags: they can cause great harm to the child.

Installation instructions: sequence of actions and photos

Experts say that car carriers of group 0+ are the safest for newborns and children under one year old. Such models are secured in the car using seat belts as follows.

How to attach a car seat 0+/1

The category 0+/1 car seat is mounted in the cabin differently, depending on the age of the passenger. If parents use this model from birth to a year and a half, then it only needs to be placed against the direction of the car. When the baby grows up, it is installed facing forward and transforms into a car seat: the soft insert for newborns is removed, the backrest is adjusted so that the child can ride in a sitting position.

The fastening of a category 0+/1 car seat depends on the age of the child and can be against the movement or in the direction of movement

Base

In addition to the mounting method discussed above, the infant carrier can be installed on a special base, which is sold with some models. It is convenient because if parents need to transfer their baby in another car, they do not need to remove the base and rearrange it. It is enough to simply secure the infant carrier using standard belts.

The base is fixed to the seat using belts or the Isofix system and is constantly in the car, and the carrier itself is simply placed on top and snapped onto a reliable mechanism. Today, the newest models of infant carriers and seats are equipped with a kind of stand that rests on the floor. This design creates an additional fixation point, which increases safety when transporting a child. In crash tests, such devices receive the highest scores.

The Isofix system is designed for fixing the infant carrier.

Another option for installing a car seat is the Isofix system, which was proposed in 1990. It consists of special brackets hidden between the back and seat of the car, and locks on the base of the carrier.

Isofix is a more reliable fastening option than standard belts or a base, as it has several fixation points. However, it is worth noting that this system has weight restrictions: the child’s body weight should not exceed 18 kg.

According to European laws, over the last few years all manufactured cars must be equipped with the Isofix fastening system.

It is very easy to secure the infant carrier; just connect the fasteners to the brackets inside the seat. A special indicator will show how correctly the installation was done: red - incorrect, green - correct. If there is no indicator, then if successful, a characteristic click will sound.

Also behind the back of the rear seat or in the trunk of the car there is a special Top tether mount, to which you need to attach a hook with a belt. This allows you to more securely fix the car seat.

The Isofix system is designed for a weight of no more than 18 kg. The Isofix fasteners on the car seat must be connected to the brackets hidden in the seat. The Top tether belt is the third point of support in the Isofix system. Fixing the car seat using the Top tether belt in the car.

Rules and features of operation: how to place a child in a cradle

For complete safety while traveling in a car, parents must follow a certain sequence of actions:

  • correctly secure the infant carrier in the car (against the movement of the car, securely securing it with belts or on the base);
  • carefully place the child inside;
  • fasten the baby with seat belts;
  • check whether the belts are securely fastened and whether the baby is well secured.

Car seat and winter clothes

Another important point when transporting a baby in a car seat is the clothes he is wearing. In the warm season there is no problem with this, but in winter, when the baby is dressed in voluminous jackets and overalls, this moment is important.

Experts recommend not placing a child in a car seat wearing bulky winter jackets, overalls or envelopes due to the fact that the larger and denser the layer of clothing, the less securely it is secured. This reduces the security of the device. It is better to put the baby in a well-warmed car, and to make sure that he will not freeze, cover him with a blanket or rug.

Do I need to use an extra mattress?

Along with the carrier, you need to purchase a special liner, which is a canvas covering the entire length of the cradle with a convex cushion at the bottom. For what? To ensure that the baby is in a physiological position and there is no load on the still fragile spine. When such a mattress is placed in a car seat, the child lies correctly and the back does not sag.

All infant carriers, except category 0, are a deep concave bowl, which does not allow the child to lie completely horizontally. Therefore, many parents, when buying a device, worry about the position of the baby in it.

Sometimes the mattress has sides for additional protection of the neck and head from impact. There are also special inserts on sale that you can simply place in the infant carrier under the mattress without a sewn-in bolster. If you do not have such a liner or mattress, you can use a blanket or towel. This is necessary for additional fixation of the child in the device.

Making your own liner

You can sew the insert for the car seat yourself. For this you will need:

  • dense fabric made from natural materials so that the baby does not have allergies;
  • filler (sintepon or foam rubber).

Rules for caring for the infant carrier

Depending on the car seat model, there are different ways to care for the covers. On some devices for transporting children, they are non-removable, so they can be cleaned in specialized dry cleaners or at home yourself. In the second case:

  • remove additional parts: inserts, cushions, toys, etc.;
  • Vacuum the bassinet to remove crumbs and dust;
  • take a sponge and, soaking it in water with baby detergent, clean the carrier;
  • Using a clean sponge and water, rinse the case thoroughly to remove soap suds;
  • dry the infant carrier in the fresh air.

If the cover is removable, it can be washed by hand or in a washing machine. Before doing this, carefully read the instructions: what mode and temperature are allowed for this type of fabric, whether the spin can be programmed. Dry the upholstery in the fresh air. After all the parts have dried, the infant carrier is assembled.

A car seat is a mandatory element for transporting children, including newborns, in a car. First of all, its presence ensures the safety of the baby in the event of sudden braking or an accident. When choosing a device, you need to focus on the age and weight of the baby, because each model has weight restrictions. Also, when using a carrier, it is necessary to secure it correctly in the car so that it does not move out of place, and securely secure it with the child’s seat belts.
