Revival of retro style in lunar manicure. What is moon manicure

Gel polish coating has been in great demand lately. Its attractiveness is that it lasts long enough and protects nails from peeling. You can do a moon manicure with gel polish both in the salon and at home.

What will you need?

First of all, you need to take care of the UF or LED lamp. Gel polish, like nail extension gels, hardens only in a lamp. As a rule, both types of lamps are suitable; they will dry the coating perfectly. The only difference is in the time of use (in UV 1-3 minutes, and in ICE 10-30 seconds). More precise information about the drying time of gel polish should be found in the instructions for using gel polish. It may differ from company to company.

In addition to the color coating, a base coat and a top coat may be needed. The base allows you to get maximum adhesion to the nail, and the top (the last step) adds shine and protects the coating from sun exposure.

You also need to take care of such liquids as a dehydrator - it dries the nail plate, which increases the adhesiveness of the coating - and a clinser (if the top coat has a sticky layer).

Additional accessories you will need are files for natural nails, a pusher, a brush for brushing away sawdust, lint-free wipes, templates and brushes. It is worth noting that the files need to be soft (for example, 240 grit) so as not to damage the nail plate.

Let's get started

To perform a moon manicure (like any other) with gel polish, you must:

  1. Remove old coating.
  2. Disinfection means cleanliness not only guarantees health, but also ensures that no mold or other unpleasant things form under the coating.
  3. Using a pusher - this tool pushes back the cuticle and moves the pterygium. It is almost invisible on the nail until you start to move it. Also located in the cuticle area. Remember that if nothing moves, then you don’t need to be zealous and harm your nail, which means you simply don’t have pterygium. This tool can be replaced with an orange stick, which will reduce the risk of damage to the nail plate several times.
  4. File - used for two actions - giving shape to the free edge (even if you like it, still use the file purely symbolically, the edge needs to be updated) and for removing the top fatty layer from the surface of the nail. It's important not to overdo it here. There should be no pain, red spots, etc. You just need to remove the shine from the nail.
  5. Removing sawdust - you can use a special brush or a lint-free cloth soaked in a cleanser.
  6. Dehydrator - it must be applied to the entire nail, it dries quickly and the surface remains matte. After using it, you should not touch your nails with your fingers, lips, or anything that can make them greasy.
  7. The base is the first layer. It must be applied thinly and carefully. It is necessary to retreat from the cuticle and side ridges to 1 mm. This will help avoid material peeling and prolong the life of the coating. Dry in a lamp for the time specified by the manufacturer.
  8. Colored coating. There are several application methods, depending on both the color scheme and technique. In any case, you need to cover the nail in several layers, drying each one, and do not forget about the indentations as in the previous paragraph.
  9. Top. May be with or without a sticky layer. Apply last, dry well and remove the sticky layer if necessary.

Lunar manicure with gel polish: method 1

This design is most easily accomplished using paper templates. Apply the color of the hole to the entire nail, dry it, seal the required part with a template, and all that remains is to cover the remaining part with the main shade.

This rule does not work with all colors. You need to be very careful so that when mixing shades you don’t end up with a muddy color or something else.

This method is ideal for white. You need to apply it to the entire nail in 2-3 layers, drying each one. Then either draw a hole of the desired color on top of it, or stick a template and apply the main gel polish (so that the hole turns out white).

Method 2

You can also use a thin brush and perform a lunar manicure no worse than with templates. Depending on how convenient it is to paint the hole (that’s the beauty of gel polish, it can be wiped with a dry brush and adjusted endlessly until it dries), and then apply the main color with a brush from the bottle.

In the second method, mixing of shades is eliminated and much fewer layers are applied than in the first. This makes the coating more aesthetically pleasing and without steps that may appear when using templates.

Both methods are good in their own way and everyone should choose for themselves which one suits them best. By the way, the time of the procedure itself depends on this. After all, it’s not very easy to draw beautiful holes the first time with a brush without experience.

In addition to the design

If a two-tone coating seems boring to you, then remember that you can always complement it with various decorative elements. This role may include:

  • rhinestones - both along the entire border of the hole and individual ones - will add some elegance to the design. Can be applied to a sticky topcoat layer;
  • glitter, broths - many options for use, depending only on the author’s imagination;
  • painting - if you have this skill, you can decorate your nails with some patterns or colors;
  • French - looks original when not only the hole differs in color from the main nail, but also the free edge, as in a French manicure. It is not necessary to make a wide stripe.

The scope for imagination in this design is very wide, and with modern materials and their accessibility, all ideas can be easily brought to life. A good example would be a lunar manicure, photos of which are presented in this article. This design will be a great addition to your look in any situation.

There is always an alternative!

If you are not sure that this design will suit your hands, then you can always do a trial moon manicure with varnish. It will take much less time, because the technology is much simpler. Of course, you shouldn’t dream of the same durability as with gel polish, but you will get a 100% idea of the design.

Another alternative is a gel moon manicure. The execution is very similar to applying gel polish, but provides more options. For example, lengthening nails, smoothing the surface and creating beautiful architecture. In the latter case, the procedure will be very time-consuming and will require certain skills.

If you simply apply gel to your nail, you can expect chipping or peeling because the natural nail is more flexible than the coating.

Among the many types of manicure, the option with a very poetic name is especially popular. And although the origin of his name is more than prosaic, this does not make nail art any less loved by women. After all, if you come up with imagination and put a piece of your soul into the process of creating it, then a lunar manicure will become an exquisite decoration for even the most sophisticated female hand.

Lunar manicure

This version of manicure, later called lunar, first appeared relatively recently - at the beginning of the last century. The peak of his popularity was the thirties. Then they forgot about lunar manicure for a long time, as it became unfashionable. But at the end of 2009, the famous connoisseur of retro style Dita von Teese revived interest in it. Around the same time, such manicures began to appear on the catwalks of the country. At most shows of fashion houses, for example, Dior, the models’ nails sported a mesmerizing lunar manicure, evoking memories of good old Hollywood. From this year until now, lunar nail art has not lost its position in fashion, where it confidently competes with everyone’s favorite French manicure. Therefore, to diversify your usual manicure options, you can safely choose lunar nail art. And it remains relevant this season, which is why fashionistas around the world do not stop experimenting with this nail art, coming up with more and more variations on the theme of the Luna manicure, as many call it.

The divine Dita Von Teese returned this type of manicure to the catwalks

It is especially appropriate if you want to create a charming retro-style look. In this case, a lunar manicure will make a wonderful finishing touch to your look.

Let's now try to figure it out according to its classical canons. And it is a nail art in which the hole at the base of the nails is not painted over with varnish, which creates a beautiful gap in the form of a crescent - the moon. This is where its name comes from. But that was at the beginning. Today, fashion is introducing more and more new trends into this version of manicure. First, the stylists changed the shape of the part of the nail that remained unpainted: now the oval of the crescent is extended in either direction, and both of these options remain relevant and fashionable. Then, taking into account the bright colors of varnish that are popular this season, the hole near the base of the nails is either not painted over, covering the rest of the nail with a bright-colored varnish, or the hole and the nail are painted with varnishes of contrasting colors. And here, too, there can be many combinations. The most pompous of them is a black nail with a gold or silver hole; a red nail with a blue or white hole, as well as a green one with a yellow hole, also looks interesting. Everything here depends on your desire and imagination.

This is how classic lunar nail art is done

If you are tired of the classic oval, any shape is possible. The main thing is that the nail hole stands out

This manicure is good because it is suitable not only for long nails, but is in perfect harmony with nails of medium and short length. On not very long nails in a lunar manicure, it is better to use lighter colors, because black visually shortens the nail, as do other shades of dark varnishes. And connoisseurs of creativity in manicure can add drawings or rhinestones to it, leaving as the basis the classic version of the moon manicure from one color of varnish or applying several colors of varnish on one nail at once.

This manicure is easiest to do in a beauty salon, but if you wish, you can do it yourself. Lovers of variety can easily complete moon manicure at home.

To do this, you will need simple stencils, which you can purchase in the store. Although you can completely do without them by drawing the hole yourself with a thin brush. But at the same time, you will have to try to achieve uniform nail art. Making it is not as easy as its opposite - French manicure, which has already become familiar to us. The lunar version of the manicure, in which a “smile” needs to be drawn at the base - the hole of the nail, and not at the end of the nail as in a regular French manicure - is often combined with a standard French manicure. In this case, the smile and the crescent should be drawn, pointing them in the same direction. Moon manicure also differs from French manicure in the use of contrasting colors. Thus, a French manicure is usually depicted with light shades of varnish, and a lunar manicure, on the contrary: the more contrasting and brighter the colors, the better the manicure. In this case, experiments with the most unexpected color combinations are allowed. You also need to take into account that this manicure, like many others, visually makes the nail shorter. And if, for example, a French manicure is appropriate on nails of any length, then long nails are more suitable for a lunar manicure than short ones.

It is easier to apply a moon manicure on your nails with special stickers for a French manicure. You will also need a thin brush. So, pre-prepare your nails as for any regular manicure. Crescent polish is applied first. Then it dries so that the stencil does not stick to the varnish. Next, a special strip for a jacket is glued near the hole of the nail and the entire nail is covered with a color contrasting to the hole, without going beyond the boundaries of the stencil. When drawing a crescent without a stencil, first draw a semicircle line and then paint it over without crossing the conventional line. To draw a smile for a French man, you don’t need any special skills, because this is no longer a discovery. Therefore, you can safely use a combination of French manicure and moon manicure. And on top of these artworks a transparent finishing varnish is applied. When choosing colors for the base of your manicure, you can take into account the latest fashion trend - matte colored varnish.

Lunar French

In recent years, double lunar manicure, which also includes a French manicure, has burst into fashion. At the same time, the crescent moon stands out in a different color both at the top of the nail and at its base. The moon jacket, which is actually not such a new product, was popular back in the forties of the last century, and then it was called the “Hollywood jacket.” Fashionistas of that time varnished their nails so that both the hole and the end of the nail remained unpainted. Often, a regular French manicure was added to the lunar French manicure, then semicircles were drawn in the same color both at the nail hole and at its end. But there are also originals that risk combining several colors of varnish for the top and bottom of the nail plate. As they say, it's a matter of taste! Many girls would like to do this manicure themselves. They are hampered, as always, by the fear that they may not be able to draw a perfectly straight line, especially when working with their left hand. And thanks to master classes and step-by-step instructions, any girl can do this manicure. If you don’t have a good idea, then the gallery will suggest ideas and inspire you to create a gallery that you can study and implement on your own nails. Watch, repeat and improve with your own fantasies.

To make this nail art yourself, you first need to degrease the nail plates with nail polish remover. Then you need to organize the cuticle by applying softening agents to it, and after a few minutes, pull it off with a regular orange stick. Before varnishing, you need to coat the nail with a protective strengthening agent. The next step is to apply the base coat. It is important to pay attention to applying it to the hole area. For the hole itself, it is better to choose a classic color from white and beige to gold and silver. They look best on bright or dark varnishes. Then the moon stands out. To do this, first take an ordinary pencil (you can use the one used for lips), sharpen it well and draw neat semicircles on the nails. An uneven, crooked line can be wiped off with a cotton swab, soaking it in lotion, which will not damage the varnished surface in any way.

Carrying out moon manicure at home, you can make stencils for the moon and “smile” yourself, or you can buy them in the store. But they are not always convenient due to their opacity. Because of it, it is difficult to understand whether the semicircles are similar to each other, the same can be said about “smiles”. Moreover, the varnish tends to flow under the stencil, which can only be corrected by repainting the entire nail. Therefore, it is easier to draw moons and “smiles” with a pencil. To complete the lunar manicure, you need to arm yourself with a lipstick brush: it is very convenient and much thinner than the brush used for varnish. The brush is carefully dipped in dark varnish and traces the previously drawn semicircle of the moon and “smile”. After this, you need to cover the remaining half of the nail with varnish and remove the remaining pencil near the hole. The nail is again coated with varnish: first dark and then transparent.

In recent years, designers have come up with many options for how to make a moon jacket.

But in any of them, a mandatory moment is nail treatment:

  • bath for them
  • straightening the shape of the nail,
  • cuticle trimming.

It is appropriate to first apply the varnish with which the crescents will be depicted and wait until it dries. After this, you must decide for yourself whether to use a sticker template or use a pencil. By the way, opaque stencils are successfully replaced with completely transparent tape. The fixative varnish also plays an important role, which will firmly withstand the threat of mechanical damage to the manicure.

In general, the moon jacket is relatively easy to do, and looks fashionable, bright and elegant. And all we have to do is try, create, experiment and be unique in everything, including manicure!

Every girl who cares about her appearance is always looking for ways to decorate her image. You can make a stylish hairstyle, or you can create a beautiful nail design. Agree, well-groomed nails with an interesting design always look beautiful and attractive. Someone is looking for the latest fashion trends not only in clothing, style, but also in the design of their nails.

Nowadays moon manicure has become very fashionable, but don’t think that this is something new. Lunar manicure was popular in the 20-30s of the last century and, as always happens, all fashion trends come back, change a little in a modern way, but the basics remain the same. At that time, nail polishes were just in their infancy and completely painting a nail was considered bad manners.

That's why fashionable ladies always left the base of the nail, its hole, unpainted. This is where the name came from - moon manicure. Nowadays, the lunar manicure has found a second wind, thanks to the fashion house Dior, which staged a fashion show where models had their nails painted in a lunar design.

Today on the site website we will show you how to do a lunar manicure, you don’t have to go to a salon for this, if you want it you can easily do it yourself at home. A lunar manicure should be done using special sticker stencils (can be replaced with tape) or a regular brush. The main thing here is accuracy, harmoniously selected colors of varnish and, of course, well-groomed hands and nails.

How to do a moon manicure - use sticker stencils

Making a moon manicure using special stickers is very simple.

Required:

  • two varnishes of different colors, preferably contrasting in color tone;
  • sticker stencils (can be replaced with tape!);
  • Top finish coat - optional. To smooth out unevenness and add sparkling gloss, as well as complete the design, it is advisable to use a clear varnish (dryer, topcoat, sealer)

Step 1 Get a hygienic manicure - clean your hands and nails, push back or remove the cuticles, give your nails the desired shape using a nail file. Now you can apply on your nails the color that you want to see near the base of the nail (delicate pink color in the photo)

Step 2 Place the stickers at the base of the nails on each finger as shown in the photo.

Step 3: Cover your nails with a second polish of a different color and let dry.

Step 4 You can cover with a finishing clear varnish and apply oil to the cuticle. Lunar manicure is ready!

How to do a moon manicure with a brush

This requires some care in the design. Required:

  • Two varnishes of different colors;
  • Thin brush;
  • Rhinestones for decoration - according to your taste;
  • Finishing coating is optional.

Step 1 After a hygienic manicure, cover your nails with varnish of the main color. Let dry thoroughly.

Step 2 Using a thin brush, carefully draw semicircles with a different color of varnish.

Step 3 This polish can also be applied to the tips of the nail as a French polish.

Step 4 If you add rhinestones, the moon manicure will look even more spectacular.

Lunar nail design was introduced into fashion in 2010 by Hollywood artists. How to make a moon manicure with gel polish? You can create this nail design using a brush, stencil and foil.

For work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • set of nail files;
  • degreasing liquid;
  • colored gel polish;
  • UV lamp;
  • primer - a substance for adhesion of coated nails;
  • base varnish;
  • Bond is a means for drying the nail plate.

You can't do a manicure without breaks. From time to time, nails should be given a “break,” as the lack of air and light makes the natural material thin and dull. To prevent this, nails should be given strengthening baths based on sea salt and iodine. Lubricating them with peach oil will be good for them. Healing procedures should be done regularly, throughout the month.

Nail design with gel polish

You can do a lunar manicure at home with your own hands if your skin and nails are healthy.

The technique is carried out using gel polish in contrasting colors. All tools and the working surface of the table must be treated with an antiseptic liquid.

Lunar design is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Remove the old coating from the nail surface and steam your hands in a salt bath.
  2. Nails should be given the correct shape using a file, and cuticles should be removed.
  3. The nail plate must be sanded for good adhesion of the nail and the varnish coating. The surface should be rough.
  4. Next, the marigolds should be degreased using special lint-free wipes.
  5. The plates are then coated with bonding agent and primer for a lasting manicure.
  6. A transparent base varnish is applied to the prepared surface.
  7. Gel polish of the main color is applied using a regular brush. The gel coating should not extend beyond the nail and onto the cuticle. If this happens, then the protruding areas of the coating should be removed with cotton swabs dipped in nail polish remover.
  8. Fingers should be placed under an ultraviolet lamp for 2 minutes.
  9. When the polymerization process is completed, they begin to apply the “lunar” color coating. First, apply a thin layer of varnish and place your nails under the lamp for 2 minutes.
  10. Cover the nails with a second layer and dry again until it is completely set.
  11. When the coating has dried well, the nail surface can be decorated with a pattern or applique of rhinestones. The fimo butterfly looks very piquant on nails. This is a clay stick, from the cut of which a figurine with a pattern is obtained.
  12. To securely fix the application, nails should be coated with finishing varnish and dried under a UV lamp. The application is usually performed on one finger - the ring finger.
  13. A top coat is applied over the colored polymer, carefully distributing it over the entire surface, as well as at the ends of the nail. Dry the layer again.
  14. The sticky surface of the coating is removed with a cloth soaked in a degreasing liquid.
  15. At the end of the procedure, the fingers should be treated with peach oil.

Return to contents

In recent years, the hands of beautiful girls have increasingly been decorated with lunar manicures. This is explained by the fact that this manicure has an unusual design look that can be easily transformed into different variations.

Let's look at several features of creating a unique moon manicure with gel polish:

  • The decor of the manicure a priori looks original, but a special emphasis can be made thanks to various combinations of varnishes. For example, a beige gel polish or with splashes of gold will perfectly highlight the playfulness of burgundy or the passion of red polish. Silver color can be used as a decor together with a white base; black and gold have the same compatibility. A hole highlighted with white varnish will make the rich color of lavender, turquoise or soft blue more distinctive;
  • Moon manicure lends itself perfectly to decoration. To combine two colors on the nail, you can use rhinestones, manicure foil and other decorative elements;
  • when creating a lunar manicure, you need to be as precise as possible so that the lines are neat and clear, so it is best to use stencils;
  • Moon manicure is designed not only in a semicircle, but also in a triangle.

Art nail masters distinguish three methods for this manicure:

  1. The main material is foil. Luxurious manicure created using regular foil.
  2. Drawing a hole on the nail with a brush using a distinctive color of varnish.
  3. Using French stripes or a regular stencil.

The most accurate stencil holes

Materials:

  • a set of tools for basic nail treatment;
  • degreaser;
  • base;
  • basic gel polish;
  • contrast gel polish for the hole;
  • fixative;
  • stencils (you can use an alternative to homemade stencils made from adhesive tape or adhesive tape);
  • a lamp with ultraviolet rays for drying gel polish.

How to quickly create a moon manicure yourself:

  1. Pre-prepare your hands for manicure. We make baths using essential oils, as well as sea salt, which strengthens nails well. This procedure is performed to steam the cuticle and then easily remove it.
  2. We remove the cuticle and level the surface of the nails by polishing and sanding with a medium abrasive file.
  3. In order for the gel polish to be evenly distributed on the nail plate, it must first be degreased.
  4. The next step involves applying a base coat. Drying in an ultraviolet lamp after application.
  5. Then the main tone of the gel polish is applied in two layers to each nail, and the layers are dried alternately under a UV lamp for about two minutes.
  6. After making sure that the main gel polish is completely dry, the stencil is glued.
  7. The hole is painted with another contrasting color of gel polish.
  8. The stencil is removed. This is followed by drying under a UV lamp.
  9. The final step is coating with a fixative, which also requires drying. An excellent lunar manicure can captivate onlookers!

Foil is the main element of manicure

Materials:

  • as in the previous version, a manicure set;
  • base coat;
  • gel polish of the required color;
  • fixative;
  • colored foil;
  • manicure glue for attaching foil;
  • regular cotton swabs;
  • lamp.

To do this you need:

  1. We carry out all the necessary procedures of the preparatory stage (water treatments for hands with essential oils, removal of steamed cuticles, leveling the surface of the nails and degreasing it before the subsequent application of gel polish).
  2. The surface of the nail is covered with a base coat and then dried under a lamp.
  3. Next, each nail is covered with the main color of gel polish (note that at least two layers are applied to ensure that the color is saturated). Drying the first and second layers should be at least two minutes.
  4. Using a brush, apply glue to the base of the nail. Here you need to be extremely careful so that the sizes of the holes do not differ.
  5. Then we apply the foil only with the matte side to the glue. After the glue has dried, quickly remove the unnecessary foil.
  6. To achieve the most ideal result, the procedure with foil is repeated, since initially the foil is not always glued evenly.
  7. The final stage involves coating with a finishing coat, and drying under a lamp for the usual two minutes. Enchanting manicure is ready!
