What is the history of the carol holiday?

And here is the legend itself: on the day winter solstice According to legend, the Sun was eaten by the snake Korotun, but so that people would not be left without light and warmth, the good goddess Kolyada gave birth to a new Luminary, little Bozhich, in the waters of the Dnieper. When do carols start?
