Decoupage, or napkin technique

Decoupage is an easy and inexpensive way to update furniture. An old cabinet, bureau or sideboard, decorated using a similar technique, becomes a real work of art, turning from a standard model into a real designer masterpiece. For restoration, you can use various materials - fabric, newspaper and magazine clippings, special paper. We invite you to learn an interesting and simple DIY decoupage of furniture with napkins, which is not difficult to do.

The principle of the decoupage technique is inherent in the name itself. From French, the word “decoupage” is translated precisely as “clippings”. This is the basic principle of work - cutting out various images and gluing them on the surface. A wide variety of items can be decoupled. From large furniture elements - cabinet fronts, table tops, doors, to the smallest things - vases, candles, original jewelry or boxes. When decoupage, everything depends on your imagination and patience.

The history of decoupage dates back to the 12th century in China. The heyday of decoration in this style came in the 17th century, when European aristocrats began to fill their homes with expensive Asian household items, and Venetian craftsmen, sensing good earnings, learned to add exotic notes to the products of local furniture makers.

In our time of faceless industrialization and templates, any hand made products are in great demand and interest among creative people. Therefore, decoupage is again at the peak of popularity.

The most common today are six main types of decoupage techniques:

  • classic (direct) decoupage is a basic method in which a picture is glued or implanted onto a prepared surface. If you want to decorate a product made of wood, MDF or chipboard, the surface must first be sanded and primed. This method is good for beginner needlewomen, as it will help you understand the basic techniques of decoupage;
  • reverse decoupage - used for decorating transparent surfaces - dishes, glass, mirrors. It differs from the direct one in the sequence of actions - first, a base (napkin, clipping or any other picture) is applied to the reverse side, and then the surface is primed and varnished;
  • artistic (smoky) decoupage is shading and drawing of the background, which allows you to effectively emphasize all the outlines and nuances of the design. Using smoky decoupage, you can create a full-fledged picture with shadows, volumes and accents, as well as hide small flaws in the work. A colored haze is created using pastels or acrylic paints, after which the surface is coated with matte varnish;
  • deco patch – paper patchwork. This version of decoupage uses pictures that have been previously torn into arbitrary pieces. This style of decoupage is also great for beginners, as it does not require any special skills and is based only on the artistic intentions of the author. The flaps can be glued overlapping or almost end-to-end, leaving a thin border. Thus, the item can be given a touch of artificial antiquity or create the effect of natural stone. Do not forget to cover the finished work with a protective layer of acrylic varnish;
  • volumetric – a modern version of the technique, which creates pictures with a fashionable 3D effect. This is a technique for experienced craftsmen; it is better for beginners to start with simpler work. For three-dimensional paintings you will need modeling paste, special art gels, putty, and a base. The base is pieces of fabric, multi-layer napkins, or you can use decoupage cards or special Sospeso Trasparente equipment.

Working in the 3D decoupage technique requires a lot of experience and accuracy, but the result is very impressive and unusual.

Choice of motives

There are a great many motives for decoupage, all of them are limited by the personal preferences of the author and the degree of integration of the decorated object into the surrounding interior. You can cut out a beautiful pattern from paper napkins, decorate the selected surface with old photographs, use pictures from magazines, or make a printout with the design you like on a laser printer. Furniture modules of standard models, decorated using the decoupage technique, will immediately attract everyone's attention and add zest and exclusivity to the interior decoration of your home.

Since decoupage is most often used to restore worn out, problem areas on furniture, bright and ultra-modern designs are rarely used as a basis for decoration.

The most common subjects used for decoupage furniture are:

  • floral motifs;
  • pastoral drawings;
  • country style;
  • fruits, berries, vines;
  • angels, religious subjects;
  • birds;
  • Japanese, Asian motifs;
  • old postcards or photographs.

It is precisely such scenes that fit most organically into the interior of the beloved Provence, ethnic or always relevant classic style.

Tools and materials

The decoupage technique opens up a wide choice for self-expression and does not require significant material investments. But still, for a correct and beautiful result, you need to arm yourself with some tools and materials.

What tools are needed for this:

  • sharp small scissors. Regular manicure, medical or special tapestry scissors will do. The main condition is a short, sharp blade. The best option would be to use Teflon-coated scissors. Such scissors are not subject to corrosion, glue and paint do not stick to them;
  • decoupage knife with a rotating blade or scalpel - used for processing dense materials;
  • brushes of several types - for shading, applying glue and a protective layer (varnish). These should be synthetic products of different thicknesses. It is also convenient to use a soft foam sponge for these purposes;
  • primer – for surface preparation. You can use PVA glue or putty with acrylic;
  • glue - special decoupage (for dense applications), PVA, wallpaper, paste, acrylic varnish, egg white;
  • background paints – acrylic, pastel, pigments;
  • roller - for smoothing the glued picture.

Materials for decoupage you will definitely need:

  • napkins are an affordable material recommended for beginning craftsmen. You can purchase special products in craft departments, or you can simply buy regular sets of three-layer napkins with a beautiful pattern. A pack is very inexpensive, so if you make a mistake, you can easily start over using a different paper picture. The disadvantage of this material is its fragility and ability to stretch and form folds during operation. It is advisable to apply the napkin to a light surface; a dark base will simply “eat” the design on a thin material;
  • decoupage cards - sold in specialized stores and are drawings of various sizes, collected in sets on a specific topic. Since these products are intended specifically for decoupage, their material meets all technical requirements - they are elastic, difficult to tear and do not change their size and shape when in contact with water. Decoupage cards are especially convenient for restoring very dark surfaces;
  • Rice, banana or mulberry paper is a fibrous material used to decorate transparent surfaces. It cannot be cut with scissors; the design must be carefully torn off with your hands. Due to its texture, such paper does not tear, perfectly follows all the outlines of the object, so it is easy to work with it and get an effective result;
  • printouts are an option for those who want to make an exclusive decoration by printing their favorite design on a regular laser printer. Use the cheapest thin paper or tracing paper - it will absorb the paint better and, when decoupled, will not stand out much on the surface of the object. To prevent the printed design from blurring during work, spray it with regular hairspray.

Decoupage using a cabinet as an example

Many houses have old furniture that still performs its functions properly, but has already lost its visual appeal. Or maybe you just don’t want to part with your favorite thing, but want to give it an individual and unusual look? Try your hand at decoupage technique. And we will show you how to decoupage furniture with a napkin step by step using the example of a standard kitchen cabinet.

Step-by-step instructions on the stages of work:

  • remove the door and prepare the surface - polish it with a grinder or sandpaper. Using putty or soft wax, fill all cracks and scratches on the furniture. Leave to dry completely;
  • prepare the base - select a paper napkin with a design you like and carefully remove the top layer from it - this is what we will apply to the front of the cabinet door;
  • Apply a thin layer of glue to the inside surface of the napkin. You need to act very carefully, apply the glue using a thin flat brush, avoiding getting in excess. Leave the napkin for a while so that the glue completely saturates the material. To glue paper products, you can use regular stationery PVA. In order to conveniently transfer the drawing and not spoil it, work on a plastic file;
  • transfer the napkin to the front of the cabinet, arrange it to your liking and smooth the material with a brush. Make movements from the center to the edges to remove excess air and smooth out wrinkles;
  • the main work is completed. Now the last step remains - varnish the surface. This should be done no earlier than after a few hours; it is better to leave the product overnight. Matte or glossy acrylic varnish is suitable for the protective layer. Apply varnish at least 4 times. This process is best carried out using an aerosol spray.

With this simple method of decoupage, without special expenses, you can make an original, exclusive item for your home. Look at examples with photos of how old furniture was transformed after its restoration using decoupage.

Nuances of technology

Modern needlewomen are not limited to simply gluing beautiful pictures. Today, there are several decorating techniques using decoupage that help give furniture an original, unusual look:

  • gilding – the decorated surface is covered with a layer of gold leaf, which is an inexpensive analogue of gold leaf. This method allows you to enhance the effect of luxury and royal chic, perfect for interiors in Baroque, Art Deco, Empire style;
  • patination – creation of patina, artificial aging of an object. This decoupage technique is actively used in rustic or classic interiors. The general background of the decoupled surface depends on what type of patina is applied - silver, bronze or a noble shade of natural wood;
  • tinting – creating a background and shading using acrylic paints. Used to add contrast and enhance the color of the design;
  • Craquelure is another type of adding a visual effect of antiquity to the surface. This is a very unusual decoupage technique, in which cracks form on the object, emphasizing the originality of the material. There are two types of craquelure - one-component (cracks in the paint layer) and two-component (cracks are added in the top layer of varnish). A rather complex process, it looks especially beautiful on transparent surfaces - saucers, vases, decorated with cute pastoral or floral scenes.

Decoupage is a great way not only to give “new life” to old things, but also a wonderful process of self-expression. Many designers admit that this hobby is so exciting, it allows you to forget about problems, and the result is so pleasing that decoupage has become their main activity. Try it too, because with our tips, doing decoupage will become much easier.

Of all the variety of decorative creativity, the decoupage technique has been and remains popular. Handicraft is based on the use of three-layer paper napkins for decoupage, on which an interesting pattern and a bright picture are applied. As a result, even the most ordinary household item becomes a real masterpiece of design thought. How to do this, read the article below.

What is decoupage

The decoupage technique successfully replaces artistic painting. Decoration occurs by gluing a pattern onto the surface of household items. For this purpose, special decoupage or paper napkins are used, on which an interesting print is applied. Decoupage with napkins involves the use of wooden objects, which is good to do on old furniture. Candles, glass bottles, ceramic dishes, napkin holders, pen holders and much more are often decoupled.

How to make decoupage from napkins

Decoupage is a kind of appliqué. All you need for this is the desire to make beautiful decor and a little perseverance. The sequence of work is simple. For this you need:

  • Napkins, special decoupage paper or pictures printed on thin paper.
  • Decoration item. You can work on any surface.
  • Scissors. Regular ones are used, but better - with rounded ends.
  • PVA glue. There are special adhesive compositions on sale.
  • Varnish matte or glossy.
  • A flat brush for gluing the picture and smoothing out wrinkles.

Pasting technique

There are many ways to stick napkins. One rule unites them all: only one layer is glued, the top one. It is carefully, in the thinnest layer, separated from the napkin. This must be done carefully. If you glue more than two layers, then there is a high probability of leaving an un-glued area, which after drying will stand out strongly - these places will look whitish.

A common technique for decoupage from napkins is file decoupage. The drawing is placed face down on the file. Everything is moistened generously with water. Drain off excess liquid. The image file is applied to the surface to be pasted. Everything straightens out right away. After removing the film, this cannot be done without repeating the process from the very beginning. It is coated with glue from the middle, free spaces are not missed.

To apply the napkins, use a glue stick and an iron. The method is only suitable for flat surfaces. First, you need to lubricate the base with glue and let it dry. A prepared napkin measuring 33x33 is placed on the item, and baking paper is placed on it. Everything is ironed. Next, the surface is lubricated with glue again. The downside is that everything is done very carefully, because the iron can leave wrinkles on the paper.

To glue various napkin motifs onto a convex or concave object, use the fan brush technique. The method may be called differently, but the principle is the same: the prepared drawing is placed on the object. The background color does not matter. Water is poured into the center and stretched to the sides with a soft brush. The advantage is that everything is easily laid out on an uneven surface. The downside is that all the wrinkles will have to be smoothed out with your hands, and this is very painstaking work.

How to stick a napkin without folds

In order for the final work to look impressive and please the eye, you should very carefully smooth out the wrinkles on the wet paper. Decoupage napkins, which are applied to a three-dimensional surface with special glue, will definitely have darts and folds. However, they also need to be able to be carefully cut and made invisible. Here are some ways:

  1. Using a spray bottle with water. Before gluing, the napkin is pre-sprayed with water. This is done directly on the item being decorated. The paper should dry and take the shape of the surface. This will protect against ruptures. We glue the drawing onto the base in any convenient way, but the fan brush technique is more suitable.
  2. To stick to glass, the base must first be lubricated with glue. This will prevent the paper from slipping. If there are depressions, then a wet napkin is driven into them with neat pokes. The brush should be constantly moistened with glue so as not to tear the paper. Everything is covered with several layers of varnish.
  3. The metal surface should be treated with medium-sized sandpaper for better adhesion. Everything is attached using PVA glue and a flat brush. Periodically, its edges should be lifted to remove air. If, after drying, wrinkles still form, they need to be lightly treated with the finest, zero-grit sandpaper. It is important not to overdo it, as the drawing will be damaged and you will have to start all over again. This can take an entire ream of paper.

Where to buy napkins for decoupage

Today you can purchase creative materials not only in a specialized store. There is always the opportunity to buy napkins for decoupage in the online store. At the same time, you can order individual goods, as well as buy a large quantity. Those who like to go shopping can not only see the goods with their own eyes, but also make an individual order. The drawing is printed on thin special paper.

Price for napkins

The choice of napkins for needlework depends not only on their quality, but also on cost. Some take into account which manufacturer, others prefer a cheaper option. The table shows examples of decoupage kits for the Moscow region:

For beginning craftsmen, it is imperative to know various technical techniques when working on the topic of decoupage. The technology has been developed, already exists and many people use it. But no one canceled using your imagination and using it in your work. This type of creativity does not stand still and is combined with others. In the previous article, an introduction to . Now we are interested in the process itself.

Two-step craquelure in decoupage - technology for beginners

The word craquelure in translation means cracking of the paint layer or varnish on works of art due to changes in temperature and humidity, which leads to uneven aging.

In many master classes, popular technology is used and described, such as:

  1. Craquelure pair Maimeri No. 739 and No. 740

The numbers shown are the three digits of the product SKU and can be found on the label at the top left.

These compounds are exactly a pair, they work only with each other, they cannot be replaced with anything, one or the other step.

Operating procedure (technology):

  • Apply the first step - No. 739 - and dry until tack-free. It is better to apply the first step using a foam sponge, because it is very difficult to wash a synthetic brush from this composition, it will stick together the bristles and you will have to throw the brush away.
  • Then apply the second step with your finger - No. 740. You can also apply it with a brush, but when applying with your finger you will definitely not leave unsmeared areas, and the layer will come out more uniform.
  • Next, the work is left to dry in a warm, dry place. The higher the room temperature, the larger the cracks, so if you wish, you can dry the work near the battery in winter or in the sun in summer. You cannot dry it with a hairdryer. Cracks appear within a few hours.
  • We then reveal the cracks by rubbing a small amount of bitumen, oil paint, colorful pigments (metallic pigments: gold, bronze, silver), dry pastels or even eye shadow onto the entire surface of the work.

Rub liquid materials with a cotton pad, dry materials with your finger. After grouting the cracks, leave the work for 10 - 15 minutes. Then we wash off the second layer along with the excess grout material under a thin stream of warm water. We wash it off only with our fingers, carefully but thoroughly - the entire second step should come off.

Shake off drops of water or lightly blot with a waffle towel or lint-free cloth - nothing should stick to the first step.

After drying from water, the work is coated with any finishing varnish - acrylic or yacht.

2. Technology: Shellac – Gum Arabic

These materials are not a pair; you can buy shellac and gum arabic from different manufacturers. Shellac is an alcohol-based shellac varnish.

Gum arabic is a thinner for watercolor paints.

Both can be bought at an art store.

Operating procedure (technology):

  • Shellac is applied in three layers with a foam sponge (this varnish can also ruin a synthetic brush).
  • Each layer is dried for 10 minutes. Dry the last layer of varnish until it is tack-free.
  • Then apply and rub in gum arabic with your finger. At first, gum arabic collects on the surface in small puddles and the finger slides freely over it, then the finger begins to get stuck and the gum arabic becomes homogeneous and evenly distributed over the surface. The better we massage the gum arabic. the more beautiful. The cracks will be more even.
  • Leave to dry for several hours in a warm, dry place. The warmer and drier it is, the larger the cracks and the faster the craquelure will appear.
  • After the cracks have appeared, we rub them with the same means. as when working with the previous craquelure pair, and wash it off in the same way.
  • But we can only use yacht varnish as a finishing varnish. Acrylic varnish, at best, will develop small cracks, and at worst, it will completely rise like a fur coat.

Two-step craquelure technology in decoupage (video)

We looked at coating techniques for paints and varnishes. This is not a panacea. Each master has his own flavor and his own secrets.

Next we will consider the use in decoupage: napkins, printouts, decoupage cards, rice paper. The most important thing in any work created using the decoupage technique is the picture, the image. It can be printed on different paper, the only difference is in its density. A napkin is the thinnest image carrier that does not require thinning. The print is the densest, but the easiest to wear out. Decoupage cards and rice paper are more expensive - we will consider them in other articles, during the master classes.

In this article we will look at the most interesting, simple and effective to use - napkins and printouts.

Decoupage napkin with application technique

There are no special napkins for decoupage. You can buy them anywhere, both in special online stores, stores for artists and handicrafts, and in the nearest grocery store. Napkins, as a rule, have three layers; for work we only need the top, colorful layer, the rest is separated and thrown away.

The main difficulty of decoupage for beginners is how to apply a napkin without folds or tears. Be patient and take time, you will ruin a couple of napkins and the skill will develop.

There are several ways to apply the wipe to a surface. You are offered this - apply a napkin to the water, level it and then spread it onto the surface, followed by coating with decoupage glue.

Work process:

  • Place a napkin on the treated surface. Take a medium synthetic flat brush, dip it in water and drop it into the center of the napkin. We slightly lift the napkin by the edges and lower it to the surface again - look, it lies completely flat, without wrinkles. Now all that remains is not to spoil a good start.

  • Dip the brush into the water, remove it and shake off excess water (a brush that is too wet will tear the napkin). From the center to the edges, evenly in a circle, straighten the napkin with smooth, careful movements.

  • Hold the brush so that it touches the napkin with the entire surface of the bristles.

  • We regularly wet and shake the brush, and so we move to the very edge. This must be done quickly enough to prevent the napkin from drying out.

  • Ideally, the entire napkin will lie flat, without a single fold. As soon as we have applied the napkin to the water and leveled it, we immediately repeat the same process, but dipping the brush not into water, but into decoupage glue. Apply a napkin evenly from the center to the edges. There is no need to put a lot of glue on the brush at once; it is better to dip it in glue more often. By the way, this technique uses at least two times less glue than when gluing a napkin directly onto the glue. By applying glue, you further level the napkin and remove those wrinkles that have appeared somewhere.
  • After completing this fascinating process, dry the napkin. You can do it naturally, using a hairdryer.
  • After complete drying, we critically examine the work. If there is a crease, it doesn't matter. We take medium-hard sandpaper and carefully, gently erase the crease, not a trace will remain of it. Do not be afraid. that you will rip off the napkin - if you evenly coated it with glue and the glue was of high quality, it will be difficult to rip off the napkin. We also cut off the edges of the napkin with sandpaper, holding it at an angle of 45 degrees to the edge of the surface.

You have learned one of the ways to use napkins in decoupage. Know that there are other ways (different technology). To consolidate the material in this article, watch the video and evaluate other methods and techniques of the master in it.

How to glue a napkin in different ways in decoupage (video)

Decoupage printouts and application process (technology)

Using printouts is technologically very convenient and simple. This technology provides a resource for selecting pictures and bringing your artistic ideas to life. All you need is to find a picture on the Internet, change its dimensions in any graphics editor so that the picture exactly matches the dimensions of the surface on which you will glue the print.

The only fundamentally important thing is that the picture should be printed not on an inkjet printer, but on a laser printer, otherwise the ink will flow and smudge when it comes into contact with water or glue. There are no special requirements for paper and you can use both photo paper and good office paper. So. you have a printout.

Operating procedure (technology):

  • We thin the printout with tape. We need simple stationery wide tape. We place it on the back of the printout, lightly smooth it with our finger and immediately pull it in the opposite direction.

Together with the tape, a layer of white paper will easily peel off, leaving a layer of paint. The adhesive tape must be glued in the direction of the fibers, then when you peel off the adhesive tape, almost the entire unnecessary layer will separate at one time. If you stick the tape against the direction of the grain, only a small part of the white paper will come off with it and you will have to repeat the procedure several times. You risk damaging the ink layer of the print that we need.

  • Then you need to lightly stroke the thinned printout with medium-grit sandpaper. Iron in one direction, from the center to the edges, do not rub the paper.

We only need to remove excess paper pellets and dust. Trim the white edges of the printout using a utility knife and a ruler.

  • Then soak the printout in water for a minute. This will allow it to soak well.
  • Then we will coat the surface on which we will apply the print well with decoupage glue. The adhesive layer should not be too thin and not too greasy so that the wet print does not tear when gluing.

  • We take the printout out of the water, blot it with a towel and place it on the surface. The printout should lie flat, without wrinkles. We go over the printout with a paint roller from the center to the edges, expelling air bubbles and excess glue from under the printout. This is such an interesting technology of this method.

  • We coat the printout with another thin layer of decoupage glue on top and dry it.

  • We cut off the excess print along the edges with sandpaper. Hold it at a 45 degree angle to the edge of the surface and gently rub it until the excess edge of the print comes off.
  • This is where printing technology ends.

How to transfer a printout to any surface (video)

This is where the article ends. In other reviews, decoupage creative technology will be shown from objects, crafts. You need to learn to analyze the methods of different masters and listen to their advice.

Decoupage (covering plates, jars and other utensils with napkins) is a relatively new activity in the world of modern needlework. The technique is not very difficult to perform, but it requires attentiveness, accuracy and diligence, even for beginners.

This method of decoration originated in the 17th century in England and is still popular. Learning how to make original items can sometimes take a lot of time. For beginners, decoupage from napkins can be mastered gradually, working with photographs that show the process step by step.

What is decoupage from napkins?

Decoupage is a technique for decorating things by gluing patterns and designs cut out of paper onto them., corresponding to the artistic idea of the master and subsequent varnishing of the finished work to protect it from damage. The completed picture will look like a real painting.

Using this technique, they give a second life to old pieces of furniture or household equipment and create stunning crafts that can be used to decorate the interior or give as gifts to friends and family.

Tools and materials for work

To work with simple equipment you need the following equipment:

This is the standard set. Depending on the working material, it is supplemented with improvised means.

Basic techniques and stages of decoupage of various objects

For those who are starting to master the decoupage technique, and those who want to learn the manufacturing technique step by step, experts recommend starting to make crafts from napkins using photographs.

Manufacturing sequence on a wooden object:

  1. Sand the surface with sandpaper to saturate the primer.
  2. Prime and then sand the workpiece again.
  3. Apply white acrylic enamel on top.
  4. Apply the image, cover with several layers of varnish, sanding each one for gloss.

To understand how materials interact with each other, it is advisable to conduct a test on a similar sample. The peculiarity of the technique lies not in the ability to draw, but in the mastery of accuracy and filigree, because... You will have to work with scissors. It is better to use special pictures for decoration that have optimal print quality and paints that are resistant to water and glue.

When using napkins, you need to remove the two lower white paper layers, and the cards are used immediately.

There are the following techniques for attaching illustrations:

  • Glue- the most common way. To do this, place a napkin on the object to be decorated and apply glue on top with a brush.
  • Using a file- Suitable for textured bases. Place the prepared pattern on the stationery file facing the film and sprinkle it with water until the napkin is completely wet. After the paper residue is washed away, paint with the image will remain on the cellophane. Apply the film to the item to be decorated. so that the picture sticks to it.
  • Iron— the hot method is suitable for flat surfaces. First coat the work area with glue and let it dry. Place the design on top and cover with baking parchment. Iron over the paper until the pattern sticks. Apply a layer of varnish.
  • Using gelatin. Repeats the gluing technique, only the glue is replaced with gelatin. Suitable for decorating Easter eggs. For this, 1 tsp. dilute gelatin in 1 tbsp. boiling water and use as glue.

Creating a pattern from napkins

The following materials are used for decoupage:

  • napkins;
  • special cards sold in craft stores;
  • drawings from the Internet or printed photographs;
  • images from wrapping paper, magazine clippings, postcards.

You can glue any pictures, but not all of them fit perfectly, and it takes a long time to select the pattern.

The following parameters should be taken into account:

  1. The main criterion is the size of the image, which should be in harmony with the size of the workpiece. Having mastered the technique of processing printouts, it is easy to change the format of patterns in different graphic editors.
  2. The second factor is that the source material does not match the color palette. A successful combination of the colors of the design and the remaining decor is a significant part of success, which is solved with the help of a graphics program.
  3. Sometimes illustrations do not match in image and style. The wrong choice of motive spoils the effect of the work performed. It is necessary to choose pictures that correspond to the idea that has arisen.
  4. Sometimes napkins contain unnecessary elements that have to be removed.

An ideal illustration for decoupage looks like this:

Technique for creating textured patterns

To perform volumetric decoupage, it is recommended to prepare several layers of patterns from napkins. Next, they need to be glued together layer by layer and attached to the base using silicone, which gives the property a three-dimensional effect. In this technique, 3 zones are determined: the front part and the zones of intermediate layers. Before gluing the elements, it is advisable to form the component naturally.

An important condition is the creation of a believable sculpture. After the painting is completely formed, a water-based varnish is applied to some sections. These areas reflect light glare and are visually perceived as more voluminous.

Bottle decoration technique

Decoupage bottles from napkins for beginners is done step by step with photos. To do this, it is better to take a glass container that is flat and without any bulges. To work, you will need a standard set of tools with the addition of glass cleaner, which is used to pre-treat a bottle clean of stickers. It is advisable to work with gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints.

The execution sequence is as follows:

  1. prime with varnish or PVA glue, let dry;
  2. create a background with light acrylic paint in several layers until the transparency disappears.
  3. cut out the design with scissors. If it matches the background of the container, you just need to tear off the ends of the napkin;
  4. soak the image with water and secure;
  5. Apply varnish along the top of the motif with a soft brush or spray;
  6. gently straighten the folds with a swab;
  7. at the end it is necessary to polish out minor errors;
  8. After completing the final finishing, varnish.

DIY bottle decoupage: master class

To get high-quality decor for a glass bottle, you need to know several important nuances. Anyone can make beautiful decoupage of a glass bottle. Such a product can decorate any room in the house, for example, the kitchen.

Master Class:

  1. At the first stage, you should prepare all the necessary materials for work. The main material is the bottle. It can be of any shape. However, it is worth noting that decoupage of a glass jar looks much more impressive.
  2. The material prepared for gluing must be cut. The napkins are first compressed and cut with scissors. You should not make identical sections; the work will be more beautiful if the napkins cover the containers in a chaotic manner.
  3. Alternatively, the work can use whole pieces of paper rather than cuttings.
  4. The master must think about the method of attaching the napkins in advance. The easiest option is to stick them with tape.
  5. The surface of the container must be prepared. It is important that it is clean and dry. To remove irregularities on the surface of the can, it should be sanded. If desired, the jar can be painted.
  6. The workplace should be protected from contamination. For example, you can cover it with newspapers.
  7. Next, take the glue and mix it with water. To obtain an adhesive mass, mix water and glue in equal quantities.
  8. Then the prepared adhesive mass must be applied to the surface of napkins and all paper surfaces that will be used for decoration. While the mixture has not dried on the paper surface, it should be glued to the surface of the jar.
  9. It is important to coat the edges of the cutouts well. To make the composition look better and more impressive, you should glue the napkins in 2 layers.
  10. Before pasting the jar a second time, you should wait until the first layer has completely dried.
  11. To secure the work, you need to apply varnish to the surface of the jar.
  12. After the varnish has dried, you need to wipe the surface of the jar with a damp cloth, and then varnish it again.

  • The second layer of napkins should be glued only after the first layer has dried.
  • It is important to make sure that the design is printed on only one side of the napkins. Why? The fact is that after glue is applied to it, the napkin can print a design on the other side.
  • You must wait until the glue has completely dried. Before varnishing the jar, you should try to tear off a piece of the napkin. If it gives in easily and comes off, then you need to reapply the glue.
  • Sometimes napkins do not adhere well to the glass surface if the adhesive solution was prepared incorrectly. It is important to maintain the proportions and mix glue and water in the same amount. You can also purchase ready-made glue for decoupage, although its cost is higher than regular glue.
  • The technician should keep a damp cloth at hand. With its help you can easily remove glue residues.
  • If you stick napkins in several layers, you can achieve a beautiful 3D effect. Before applying the next layer, the previous one must be varnished.

What do you need to prepare for such decoupage?

Whatever the craftsman plans to make using this technique: making growths on a bottle, performing reverse decoupage, decorating dishes, he needs to “arm himself” with the necessary tools and materials.

So, he will need:

  • Container, the decoration of which will be carried out.
  • Glue. Most often, glue needs to be mixed with water, but stores sell a special adhesive for decoupage.
  • Scissors. They can be used to cut elements for decoration, such as paper or ribbons.
  • Varnish. Drying oil can replace varnish.
  • Decoration elements, that is, materials for decoupage.

How to get build-up on a glass bottle?

Creating volumetric elements using this technique is not uncommon. There are many ways to create build-up on glass containers. The best way is to glue polymer clay onto it. Thanks to this clay, any elements that the master wants appear on the bottle.

He can sculpt anything from polymer clay, animals, a sea anchor, or just convex balls.

Instructions:

  1. Glass containers, polymer clay and a means for softening it are prepared.
  2. The master makes with his own hands the growths that he wants to see on the bottle.
  3. The clay is mixed in advance with a special substance that softens its structure.
  4. After this, the growths can be attached to the surface of the jar, gluing them with “Moment”.
  5. The material should be baked in the oven. The temperature should not be lower than 130 degrees.

Tip: To make three-dimensional patterns, you can use putty. It forms the outline of the desired figure, after which the figure should be filled.

Reverse decoupage of bottles: step-by-step instructions

The operation scheme is described step by step:

How to make a beautiful bottle cap?

To give the composition a complete look, you should think about how the bottle cap will look. A beautifully designed cork will give the composition a logical conclusion. The simplest option is to glue the cork with knitting yarn. It is advisable that it be the same color as the design on the napkin. It is also important that the yarn is bright and noticeable.

There is no point in using thin acrylic thread for socks for this purpose, since it is practically invisible.

You can also glue some decorative insect, for example, a ladybug, onto the surface of a bottle cap decorated with thread. Don’t forget about the possibility of decorating a composition using acrylic paints. The master can depict any design on the surface of the jar, for example, a daisy or the sun.

Options for final design of work

Consider the design of a decorated faceted bottle:

  1. Take halves of beads to match the main color of the product and glue them with hot glue on the edge to emphasize the unusual shape of the container.
  2. We tie a lace bow at the junction of the painted glass and the neck.
  3. Glue small leaves and flowers onto the bow.
  4. Finally, we glue the edges of the bottle and apply golden sand (use spray or powder) to add shine and shimmer.

Make a border around the edge of the product. To make it even, you need to glue masking tape and spread rubber glue along it. Then remove the tape and carefully roll up the glue with your hands after the paint has dried. It is advisable to place a piece of paper at the place where the line will begin to accurately complete the line.

Box decoupage master class

A cardboard box with a flat surface is suitable for decoupage.

Step by step technique:

  1. Secure the corners of the paper box with strips of masking tape, and then prime the entire working area with acrylic compound.
  2. Allow to dry and sand the primer with fine sandpaper.
  3. If the coating does not lie evenly, do the manipulation again.
  4. Then paint the craft with the shade selected for the background.
  5. Apply decoupage glue to the illustration area.
  6. After complete drying, apply the design on top and smooth it with a hot iron, placing a piece of paper.
  7. Apply a thin layer of varnish to the image and surface of the product.
  8. Using a foam sponge, apply background dye and other tones that match the color palette.
  9. Use a brush to draw small elements.
  10. To add some sloppiness, experts advise using a toothbrush to spray white paint on top.
  11. Finally, varnish.

Decorating the plate

Decoupage of plates is done in several ways, but for beginners it is better to master this art of napkins step by step, preferably with a photo.

Decorating this dish is divided into two ways:

  1. Straight - the motif is applied to the front side.
  2. Reverse - the image is superimposed on the back of the dish.

For decoration, a smooth white plate made of porcelain and without patterns is suitable.

Decoupage for beginners step by step with photos from napkins is done using special devices.

Operating procedure:

  1. Cut out the napkin pattern.
  2. Degrease the workpiece on both sides with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.
  3. Wipe dry to prevent bubbles and creases from appearing during operation.
  4. Carefully apply the resulting motifs to the front of the dish.
  5. Apply glue on top, while smoothing the elements with a brush.
  6. Allow the glue to dry and varnish the surface of the dish.

To use the plate for household needs, it is better to reverse decorate it.

The technique is similar to the above, but there are some features:

  1. The illustration is attached to the back of the tableware, which must be transparent for viewing the work.
  2. The glue is applied only to the edges of the motif, without touching the front of the dish.
  3. If you want to create an opaque background around the image, paint it with acrylic paint and dry it.

Chair decorations

For beginners creating decoupage of a chair from napkins, it is advisable to take a flat chair without large bends and carry out the steps step by step, preferably with a photo.

  1. Preparatory treatment, including cleaning, removing old paint or varnish and degreasing.
  2. Apply several layers of primer and dry naturally.
  3. Paint the chair using the main background. It is worth considering that napkins are translucent, and if the coating is too rich or dark, the design is lost.
  4. Carefully consider how the intended image will look and begin cutting out the pattern.
  5. Arrange and glue the pictures. As you work, you can adjust the motif, add paints and markers, and apply glitter.
  6. Apply varnish in 2-3 layers. Let dry.

Decoupage on wood

Wooden blanks of various shapes, ready for use, are available for sale. If you have an idea to decorate a household item, you will have to decorate it yourself.

Wood surfaces are divided into 3 groups:

  1. Raw workpiece. If there is roughness, it is advisable to treat it with fine sandpaper. The recesses are leveled with putty or special primer. Dry and sand again with sandpaper. Next prime with white acrylic paint.
  2. Impregnated, which is sanded for better adhesion of the motif to the product. Then wipe off the dust and apply primer.
  3. Painted area requiring preliminary inspection. If the paint does not chip, then it should be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. When the coating peels off, remove the old paint layer with a sanding device or a special solution. The treated surface is cleaned, primed and sanded.

Operating procedure:

  • Sand the working area and prime it. If you want to create an antique effect, 3 layers of white are applied to the workpiece, each of which must dry. Then use sandpaper or a metal scraper to clean out the defects.
  • If there are places eaten away by bugs, then treat them with a brush tip mounted on a drill and cover them with stain.
  • Cut out designs from the top layer of the napkin.
  • Place the motifs on the workpiece and carefully cover the top with glue and dry. Finally, varnish and let dry.

Decorating a cutting board

Carrying out the decor step by step:

Creating an original wall design yourself

The main idea of creating such decoupage is to transfer or, so to speak, paste the image onto flat and other surfaces, such as walls, floors, ceilings or even cabinet doors. The images are paper applications that are later varnished, treated with crackle or additional paint, which gives them volume and realism.

Correct decoupage on the walls will definitely add originality to any room.

Preparing images that are cut from ready-made templates does not require much time. However, if you are not confident in your design abilities, then it is best to choose floral and natural patterns, they are quite “not picky”.

Materials and tools for wall decoupage:

  • Emulsion/acrylic paint intended for walls and suitable for interiors.
  • A simple pencil.
  • Templates cut out of paper.
  • Wallpaper/PVA glue.
  • Cutter/scissors.
  • Primer coating.
  • Acrylic lacquer.
  • Level.

In addition, it is advisable to have a hard surface on hand that can be used as a lining while cutting ornaments, and the color of the paint should not be out of tune with the overall style of the room.

Instructions for creating wall decoupage

Before starting this kind of work, it is advised to familiarize yourself with the technique of smaller, traditional decoupage: Watch video tutorials or just take a general look at the features of the process.

After familiarization, you should try to put what you saw into practice:

  • The surface of the walls should be cleaned with sandpaper, then primed and painted with water-repellent or acrylic paint, preferably in 2-3 layers, and allowed to dry.
  • While the wall is drying, it is possible to cut out patterns from wallpaper or special napkins.
  • On the already dry wall, the center and extreme points of the future composition are outlined with a pencil.
  • After this stage, the pasting itself begins, for each fragment its place is carefully selected, smeared with glue on the back side and applied to the wall, gently pressing it with a slightly (!) damp piece of fabric.
  • At the corners of the composition or near windows and doorways, ornaments should be cut out more roundly.
  • After each action, it is worth trying to evaluate the work from afar, since the real scale of the work is impossible to see from close up.

After sticking the main drawings, you need to move on to smaller details. It is, of course, advisable to cut out all the templates together at the very beginning. Also, in no case should we forget that the composition must correspond to the idea and it should be checked from afar from time to time.

When the application has dried and all its parts are firmly in place, the composition should be gradually coated with acrylic varnish in 2-3 layers. After the last layers have dried, the decoupage is ready. If you adhere to all the above rules, this technique can transform your room for the better.

Pattern smoothing technique

It is recommended to glue napkins using the ironing method using a special compound. The substance is applied to the surface to be decorated, preferably flat, and left to dry a little. Then apply the cut out pattern and a paper sheet, on top of which run a slightly hot iron over the slightly damp decor. Make sure that no creases form and the motif is fixed.

There is a special transparent water-based paint that replaces glue. It is resistant to sunlight, moisture, even when the product is not varnished.

To avoid wrinkles, experts advise covering the surface with glue, placing a napkin on top, carefully smoothing it out with your fingers or a brush. Place a paper applique on a dry decoration item and cover it with a layer of adhesive.

Secrets from the masters

Decoupage for beginners step by step with photos from napkins can be gradually mastered even by beginners.

Subtleties that it is advisable for beginners to know:

  1. Each surface (except glass) is treated with sandpaper and degreased. The plastic needs this manipulation to obtain roughness and better connection with the coating agents. The wood is stripped along the grain for smoothness. Metal objects are sanded to remove previous paint or rust. The glass is treated with alcohol-containing substances or acetone.
  2. Be sure to prime the work area before painting with several layers, preferably white paint. If the material is porous, then the acrylic lays down unevenly.
  3. Beginners are recommended to do decoupage from small parts. To stretch the images uniformly, when gluing them, begin to brush from the middle to the edge, while carefully removing any air bubbles that appear.
  4. Creases and folds must be carefully leveled and hidden. If the result is a product without defects, it must be fixed with several layers of varnish. The more, the better it will look.
  5. In order for a working tool to serve for a long time, after finishing work it is necessary to wash and clean it. To do this, place a container of water nearby and immediately lower the used brushes and washcloths into it.
  6. When applying each layer, as well as after gluing the ornament, you need to dry it well., and start the next stage only on a dry area.

Decoupage attracts with its relative simplicity and variety of effects. From a variety of technologies, you can always choose the one that is closest to you.

The creative ideas and searches of craftswomen do not stand still; every year new decoupage techniques appear, which you want to quickly learn and try, and easily bring to life your most daring undertakings. So that nothing interferes with the flight of creative imagination, it is necessary to study the theory of the main directions and methods of work and get a little practice. Today, there are six types of decoupage: direct, reverse, artistic (smoky), volumetric (3D), decopatch.

Direct decoupage - classic method

Direct decoupage is the basic and, perhaps, the most basic and main way of decorating objects. It will help beginners learn how to glue and process images correctly and efficiently, understand and comprehend all the nuances and subtleties of the work, so that later they can easily master other decorating techniques.

Main nuances

The essence of the direct decoupage technique is to glue or implant an image onto a previously prepared surface. Almost any work surface is suitable. It can be wood, chipboard and MDF blanks, plywood, plastic, glass, fabric, leather, thick cardboard. The main thing is to properly prepare the surface.

Before starting work, wood must be sanded and primed, glass, plastic and leather products (document covers, notebooks, bags) must be degreased with alcohol, fabric must be washed and ironed. Any image is suitable for decoration - a motif of a beautiful napkin, a decoupage card or a printout of a picture made on a laser printer or photo paper.

The napkin must be layered and the top layer should be left; the decoupage card (or its fragment) should be soaked for a short time in lukewarm water. When working with printouts, there are several ways to prepare an image for gluing:

  • thin it out using stationery tape and delicate sandpaper;
  • implant the image into the surface by gluing the motif with the front side to the surface, followed by removing the top layers of paper using water;
  • cover the picture with several layers of transfer varnish, dry well, wet with water and carefully remove the white layer of paper, leaving a thin, transparent layer of the picture protected by varnish;
  • transfer the image onto the surface using acetone or a creamy cleanser and a regular spoon.

Take a look at our cutting board decoupage master class to learn the technique in detail with a printout (link at the bottom of the article).

Each method has its own subtleties and nuances; after trying and studying each of them, you can choose the one you like best.

Features of decorating with napkins

The napkin decoupage technique is ideal for beginners. There are several methods of gluing (implantation).

Gluing the napkin motif using decoupage glue or PVA glue, diluted with water in a ratio of 1:1. Place the motif on the surface and, using a flat brush, begin gluing the napkin, applying glue from the center to the edges. Gently smooth out the motif, straighten out wrinkles and air bubbles. Do not press too hard to avoid damaging the napkin.

Gluing using a file allows you to easily position the image neatly, with virtually no creases.

  1. Place the napkin motif (top layer) on the file with the design facing away from you. Using a spray bottle, thoroughly wet the napkin with water until it almost floats in it. Smooth out any bumps, wrinkles, or bubbles. Place another file on top and use a piece of sponge to smooth the napkin well, getting rid of excess water.
  2. Carefully remove the top file and attach the file with a napkin to the surface. Smooth the napkin again with a piece of sponge. Remove the file so that the napkin remains on the surface. Apply glue. Let dry.

This method is perfect for large fragments and for “capricious” napkins that can fall apart when trying to glue them with a brush and glue. Recommended for learning decoupage techniques for beginners.

"Hot" method ideal for gluing napkins to a flat, smooth surface (the lid of a wooden box, banknote holder, cutting board) that is not afraid of high temperatures. To work you will need PVA glue, baking paper, and an iron.

  1. Apply two layers of glue to the prepared surface, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly.
  2. Place the motif on the surface and place baking paper on top.
  3. Iron the surface with a hot iron.
  4. Remove the baking paper, let the workpiece cool, and fix the napkin with varnish.

Reverse decoupage and its subtleties

The reverse decoupage technique is used on glass (transparent) surfaces and differs from the direct method in the sequence of actions.

That is, first a napkin or printout is glued (facing away from you), additional decorative elements are created (contour painting), other artistic effects and the desired color are applied, and then the surface is primed, if necessary, the outer side is decorated with direct decoupage and varnished to protect it from abrasion .

The design appears under glass, which allows the dishes decorated using this technique to be used for their intended purpose. If you follow simple care rules, such dishes will last a long time and be pleasing to the eye.

The technique of this type of decoupage is discussed in detail in ours.

Artistic (smoky) decoupage for the patient

Many novice needlewomen are frightened by the need to use artistic decoupage in their work, armed with a brush and a palette of paints, especially if they have absolutely no experience in drawing. But it happens that a picture glued to a white surface simply screams that it is necessary to add color, shade transitions, shadows, shading, volume.

Even if the last time you painted with paints was while studying at school, you should not give up studying and mastering this type of decoupage technique, because with its help you will make your product truly exclusive and expensive in perception.

A little patience in the theoretical study of the basic techniques of artistic finishing, a lot (or maybe just a little) of training, and your work will shine with new facets. It is best to learn this technique using video master classes, step-by-step photo master classes, under the guidance of a teacher in a live master class.

You can work with acrylic paints and a paint drying retardant (allows you to do soft shading, prevents the paint from drying too quickly, allows you to carefully work out the background, make smooth halftones, shadows and transitions), and with pastels.

It is important to remember that artistic modifications are best done in daylight and take into account that acrylic paints become slightly darker after drying. In the artistic form of decoupage, three methods can be distinguished.

Feathering(colored haze) is created using acrylic paints or (it must first be scraped with a blade). The essence of the method is to fit a motif with clear edges into the surrounding background by creating a transparent haze around the motif in the same color as the adjacent area of the design.

Features of working with pastels: it is better to use a matte varnish (pastel will not be applied to glossy varnish), and the working surface should be sanded as much as possible so that there are no grooves or bumps.

Finishing and drawing the background used to enhance the artistic effect and correct possible defects.

Using these techniques, you can make a faded drawing brighter, highlight key elements, draw small details, and fill in missing elements.

Shadows Give the drawing volume and artistic completeness.

It will be easier to master the skills of artistic painting using the decoupage decoration technique if you practice doing this on sheets of plain paper. Choose a bright drawing, fix it on a sheet of paper, and, having prepared on the palette the shades and colors present in the drawing, try to fill the white background with color so that the drawing and background become a harmonious whole. Learn how to create different shades, the laws of perspective and light and shade.

Decopatch – imitation of patchwork technique

This decoupage technique is somewhat reminiscent of, since the surface to be decorated is randomly filled with pieces of multi-colored paper, which can be torn by hand or cut with scissors.

To create works using this technique, you can use napkins, rice paper, old newspapers and sheet music, color pictures from glossy magazines, and special paper for decopatch, which can be purchased in craft stores.

This style of decoupage is suitable for beginners, as it is quite simple to perform and does not require special preparedness or experience. The sizes of the pieces of paper depend on the size of the work; they can be glued slightly overlapping, forming a free and fancy ornament.

Decopatch paper has a number of advantages compared to other materials. It is thin and elastic, does not stretch, does not form folds. The choice of colors is huge, the colors are bright and rich.

When using pictures from glossy magazines, you can create the effect of an old stone - to do this, you need to wipe the glued and well-dried fragments of the pictures with acetone - part of the paint layer will be washed off, giving the decorated surface the appearance of cracked marble.

Decopatch can be used both to create a background and as an independent decorative effect. Any objects can serve as materials for decoupage as blanks; papier-mâché figures look especially impressive, which can be decorated according to your taste and desire.

Before work, do not forget to prime the surface with artistic primer or white paint; protect the finished work with several layers of acrylic varnish.

Volumetric (3D) decoupage - modern technology

This relatively new decoupage technique will help highlight fragments of work, emphasizing them with volume.

To create volume you can use:

  • modeling paste;
  • wood putty;
  • textile;
  • artistic art gels;
  • 3D decoupage cards;
  • 3D modeling Sospeso Transparente.

Let's look at how to make decoupage with the listed materials.

How to work with modeling paste

From modeling paste You can sculpt three-dimensional elements of flowers, objects, the body of an animal or bird. You will need two identical motifs.

  1. Glue the first motif (let's say it will be an image of a rooster for a rustic-style product), dry it well.
  2. Use modeling paste to sculpt the body and tail feathers. Glue it to the picture and smooth it out well, soften the transitions (with a brush or a finger moistened with water). The modeling paste should not reach the border of the pattern by 1-2 mm.
  3. From the second motif, cut out the element that needs to be glued on top of the created volume.
  4. Combine the drawings and glue them carefully. Dry. If necessary, do a little painting.

Technique for working with putty

Putty You can also lay out individual volumetric parts or large elements, if this suits your idea.

  1. It is convenient to apply the putty with a palette knife.
  2. Do not try to make a thick layer at once, let its height be 2-3 mm, smooth out any unevenness with your fingers moistened with water.
  3. Without waiting for the putty to dry, immediately begin gluing the motif.

Using putty, you can create imitations of brickwork, tree trunks, and wooden boards. Almost anything that can decorate and highlight your creation.

Decor using fabric

Fabric in decoupage used as a decorative element to give the work additional volume and presence. For example, when working with an image of a woman, you can drape the model’s skirt (dress) with fabric. The image will become more realistic and it will seem that the heroine is about to leave the surface of a decorative panel, plate or other object.

You can also create the effects of the sea, old wood, curtains, and other draperies - depending on the task.

  1. The fabric must be well soaked with PVA glue.
  2. Place the fabric on the area to be decorated, give it the desired shape and volume.
  3. Dry well.
  4. Using acrylic paints, paint the element with the desired color, add additional effects - patina, sparkles, crystal paste.
  5. Protect with several layers of acrylic varnish.

Application of art gels

Artistic art gels will give the work the effect of oil painting.

  1. Use a brush to create voluminous strokes.
  2. After drying, the art gel becomes transparent, and the drawing takes on new facets.

Working with volumetric maps

3D decoupage cards You can buy it in stores, or you can create it yourself. To do this, it is enough to make a color printout of the selected picture in five or six copies.

The first copy is the main one; from the remaining copies you need to cut out fragments that will create volume. The cut out fragments are glued on top of each other layer by layer using silicone glue, achieving the desired volume. Volumetric decoupage gives the product a sculptural appearance, but it is important not to overdo it with volume so that the composition as a whole looks harmonious and is well perceived visually.

Sospeso Trasparente - the newest method of volumetric decoration

Italian decoupage technique Sospeso Trasparente the most expensive, but very effective and unusual. A specially developed and patented non-toxic thermoplastic is used for work.

  1. The selected fragment of the image is pasted onto thermoplastic and dried well.
  2. Next, you need to cut out the image and hold it with tongs and heat it over a candle for a few seconds.
  3. As the film warms up, it becomes elastic and pliable. At this moment, the image is simulated with special tools - bubbles.
  4. Place the piece to be processed on a latex mat and give it the desired volume and curves.
  5. Let it harden.

Decorative elements made using this technique look luxurious and realistic.
If you use a napkin (top layer) or a decoupage rice card as a base, an airy, translucent volume is created.

When working with thick decoupage cards or prints, a “porcelain” effect is created, since the thick paper does not transmit light.
