History of the concept

As you already understand, we call topiary a decorated tree whose crown is made from confectionery and other items. Let's take a look at the history of this concept:

There is nothing complicated about making a tree from sweets. So, spending a minimum of effort and money, you will be able to bring your loved ones a lot of joy.

Preparing for work

The main elements of a candy tree are:

  • Bright crown.
  • Sturdy leg of appropriate diameter.
  • A pot, jar or tub with candy at the base.

The base needs to be heavy enough to support the weight of the topiary.

The composition must include the following:

  • A ball of papier-mâché or polystyrene foam as the basis for the crown.
  • A wooden stick, spoon or rod - leg.
  • A container that serves as a pot for a tree.

Additionally, the tree may have:

  • For the crown - a variety of sweets.
  • For the leg - sparkles, bows, rhinestones, shiny coating.
  • To fill the pot - pebbles, live moss, large beads, coins, candies.

There is an almost innumerable variety of options for making a bouquet of sweets. The photo clearly demonstrates how original and unusual the models are. Using them as a basis, you can come up with your own design.

Candy tree master class

Before starting the main work, prepare the glue that is needed to fix the elements of the product, polyurethane foam or plaster.

Algorithm of actions:

  • The base ball is pierced with a leg to the middle.
  • Glue is poured into the resulting hole.
  • A leg is installed in the ball and the glue is allowed to dry.
  • The pot is filled with plaster or foam.
  • The leg is firmly installed in the pot, allow time to dry.
  • The crown is decorated and the pot is decorated.

The way the crown is decorated determines whether the candies from the tree will be consumed in the future. If yes, they can be fixed with rhinestones, or glued with light glue, PVA, for example. If you do not plan to remove the candies and they will only serve as decoration, it is permissible to use stronger glue or plaster. In order for the bouquet to look beautiful, even when some of the sweets are removed from it, you need to make sure that the base ball has a pleasant color that is in harmony with the composition of the other parts of the product.

In order for the topiary base to last as long as possible, it should be made as strong as possible.

Topiary can be used many times, for example, to play a role office decoration. The base (ball, leg, pot) may be the same, but the decoration changes from holiday to holiday.

Using marmalade or lollipops

Topiary is made simply from marmalade or lollipops:

  • Chupa chups are stuck in continuous rows into the ball base, and the pot is decorated.
  • The marmalade is secured onto long wooden skewers using transparent plastic film and stuck into the ball base.

For the safety of children, it is important that the pot is stable, as kids will pull sweets from the ball. Therefore, it is better to fix the tree trunk in a pot using plaster. The base ball can be purchased at an art store, although you can make one by tightly rolling up paper and gluing it with PVA glue.

The simplest options for decorating a pot:

We study a master class on do-it-yourself candy topiary

To work you will need:
  • Flower pot
  • Gypsum mortar with a consistency similar to sour cream
  • Tree trunk stick
  • Newspaper, woolen threads, foil
  • Candies
  • Depending on the type of candy, you will need fastening materials such as a hot glue gun, toothpicks, chocolate, caramel, and double-sided tape.
  • Decorations for topiary if desired, these can be ribbon bows or hearts on a skewer, beads, flowers, rhinestones, sisal, pieces of fabric, etc.
Preparing a pot for topiary.

In clay or ceramic flower pot A thick gypsum solution is laid out, in the center of which a stick is placed, this will be the trunk of the future candy tree. The stick can be painted, wrapped in satin or floral ribbon, covered with gold, or placed with rhinestones or sparkles on thermal glue. Afterwards you need to let the plaster set, this happens within about half an hour, but the plaster dries completely only within 24 hours. Further work on making a candy topiary can be continued with the already set plaster, but donate it, of course, no earlier than a day later.

Base for topiary.

It is possible to purchase a base for topiary ready-made; usually, specialized stores sell a foam or piaflora base. If you don't want to look ready-made base, then you can make it yourself. To do this, several sheets of newspaper are crumpled into a dense, heavy ball, which is then tied wool thread for fastening. Afterwards, the newspaper base is wrapped in thick foil in several layers.

But it is possible that the base can be replaced with a large apple, orange or a bun of butter dough. In this case, the entire crown of the candy tree will be edible, but do not forget that such a gift will be stored for no more than 2-3 days.

Assembling a candy topiary.

As noted above, all further work on assembling the candy tree of happiness depends on the type of candies you have chosen and the base for the topiary.

Option 1.

The basis is a newspaper or foam ball, candy round shape in foil or paper packaging, as in the photo below.

The candies are glued onto the glue gun in a tight ring until the entire base is filled. The glue gun can be replaced with double-sided tape, then the base ball must first be wrapped in a continuous layer of tape, and then the candies must be glued onto it. This method is convenient not only because of its simplicity, but also because the candies can be removed from the wrapper without any problems.

Option 2.

A newspaper or foam ball is used as a basis; candies in candy wrappers are attached to toothpicks using narrow masking tape. And then they stick into the base in rows. It is not only simple, but also practical way, the candies are simply removed from the toothpicks.

Option 3.

In this method, the base is edible; it can be an apple, a peeled orange, or a bun of pastry. Chocolate candies without packaging or marmalade is attached to the base using caramel or thick cream dense rows of rings. Perhaps the most tasty option. The downside of such a sweet tree is its perishability.

Option 4.

IN foam base Lollipops or other lollipops are stuck into tight rings. You can make such lollipops with your own hands, for example, by melting sugar or wrapping marmalade in cling film, and then string it onto a stick.

There are a few simple ways decorate sweet topiary:

  • Glue rhinestones, beads, beads onto the packaging of sweets
  • Thread satin bows, paper or plastic hearts onto skewers or toothpicks and stick into the base.
  • Wrap in a circle with rare beads
  • Lay out the top layer of gypsum mortar with glass balls, shells, beads, and candies.
  • Decorate the pot with fabric, tie it with ribbons, or apply a pattern with acrylic paints

Video selection on the topic of the article

As you can see, there are many options for a European candy tree, and to help you make a choice, we bring to your attention several interesting videos how to make topiary from sweets or marmalade with your own hands.

Sweet tree - an unusual gift!

A sweet tree (candy tree) can be given not only as a gift additional gift, but also as an independent gift.

The occasion can be absolutely any: birthday or anniversary, wedding or wedding anniversary, christening, New Year, March 8, Valentine's Day or even February 23.

By selecting the appropriate color scheme and adding various accessories, both men and women will be pleased to receive such a tree.

For the sweet tree, prepare

* ball for the base (foam or dry sphere, you can make a lump of newspapers, tie it with thread, but this worst option). The diameter depends on the size of the tree you want to get. I take 12 cm in diameter.
* candies
* fabric or corrugated paper
* wire for the base of the barrel
* cord for wrapping the trunk
* a pot in which we will plant a tree
* plaster
* sisal
* scissors
* heat gun
* beads, ribbons

I did not use all the materials from the photo in the wood making process.

Let's start with the trunk. We take the wire, fold it in several layers to the thickness that we want to get the tree trunk. The length is greater than the height of the tree; we will need to form “roots” and make a bend in the trunk.

We fix the cord at a short distance from the edge of the wire and begin to wrap the barrel. Leave the wire empty for the roots.

Forming roots.

Place the ball on the trunk and look at the height of the tree. You can adjust the height by pushing the ball deeper onto the barrel.

Let's start forming the crown. I prefer working with fabric, so I cut squares from 3 types of material. They are called pounders. Used to fill the space between candies. During the process of making wood, I decided to replace the beige pounds with white ones.

There are several ways to attach candy. I'll just glue them on.

I glue pounds to the candy, forming a flower with a candy center. I glue it to the ball.

Gradually fill the entire surface of the ball with candies. I insert pounds into the gaps between the flowers.

We plant our tree. We spread the plaster, insert the tree, fill in the roots and let it harden.

After hardening, you can begin the most pleasant and very favorite part of me - decoration.
To hide the plaster, we glue sisal on top. The color suited me was red.

We glue beads and ribbon bows onto the pounds, and tie a bow of two ribbons on the trunk.

I also made spirals from tape and glued them on as well.

It turned out very bright, colorful and festive!
