The Nordic type of appearance began to be discussed much later in connection with the spread of racist and nationalist ideology, turning to the same sources from which German National Socialism grew. Although the very idea of ​​the Nordic race is also used in scientific theories.

Nordic race: obvious and indefinable

The term “Nordic race” in science arose at the beginning of the 20th century to designate the anthropological species of the Caucasian race, common in the northwestern part of Eurasia. In Soviet and Russian science the term is rarely used: firstly, because of its subsequent significant discrimination during Nazi use; secondly, due to the lack of clear geographical and other criteria. The Nordic anthropological type (or “northern type” in Russian anthropology) includes a set of external characteristics that differ from other anthropological types of the Caucasian race.

The main features on the basis of which the Nordic type of appearance is determined are a high average height (for men at least above 175 centimeters), light skin pigmentation, eye and hair color, as well as an elongated skull (dolichocephaly, that is, the ratio of the width of the skull to its length , ranging from 75.9% and below). According to research, these parameters correspond to the inhabitants of Europe in its northern regions: Scandinavians, northern Germans, indigenous inhabitants of the Netherlands, the British, the population of the Baltic states and the Russian North (including groups of both Slavic and non-Slavic ethnic origin).

In turn, several classifications have been developed that divide the Nordic type itself into several subtypes. For example, trønders are a type characteristic of Norway (about half the population) and Iceland, inhabited by Norwegians (at least 60% of the population). These are people with the “most Nordic” type of appearance - tall, slender, with well-developed muscles with a high forehead, blue eyes and blond hair.

Freedom for racists

From the very beginning of the existence of the concept of “Nordic race,” numerous attempts were made to link, within the framework of scientific theories, people of similar appearance with the first Indo-Europeans who inhabited Europe. Moreover, supposedly these were the first Indo-Europeans, who subsequently moved to the southeast and turned into an Aryan ethnic group that created powerful civilizations in Central Asia and Hindustan. However, to this day there is no reliable information or findings confirming this hypothesis.

Moreover, the dominant one in modern historical science It is considered the point of view according to which the Indo-Europeans came to Europe from the East. The northern anthropological type of Europeans subsequently developed due to climatic influences, primarily the shortage sunlight and warmth.

However, the most famous hypothetical constructions about the Nordic race corresponding to the presented type of appearance received not in science, but in racist ideology. It received the name Nordism and appeared in parallel with the beginning of a broad discussion about the Nordic anthropological type, at the very beginning of the last century. The meaning of Nordism lies in the idea that people with a Nordic appearance are descendants of a special race that founded European civilization and is rightfully considered the founder of all its benefits and achievements. On this basis, it is presented as a superior race in comparison not only with other races, with the Mongoloid and Negroid, but also with other types of the Caucasian race. The latter, according to this opinion, are backward due to centuries of mixing with other races. While the Nordic race has retained its purity to the maximum extent.

Therefore, it is necessary to preserve the purity of the race in every possible way in order to maintain its leading position, including by means of regulating imprisonment marriage unions and the birth of children. You don’t have to be too insightful to guess that it was the theory of the chosen Nordic race that was adopted by National Socialism and became one of the cornerstones and guidelines for action of Hitler’s ideology.

True, in the Third Reich this idea had to be somewhat modernized - it was enough to look at the leadership of the Nazi party and state to understand that Hitler, Himmler, Hess, Goebbels and the other NSDAP elite had nothing to do with the Nordic race according to objective external indicators. Then the theory of the Aryan race was voiced, the highest value of which lay in the spiritual values ​​of Nordism and the desire to establish a superior race in Europe and the world.

What do modern neo-Nazis look at?

To understand the essence of the neo-Nazism ideology, which is again gaining popularity among young people, you should find out external signs the Nordic race she praises. Thus, according to these ideological views, life in all its many and varied forms and manifestations is the product of a process of divergent evolution, according to which Europeans are divided into three “breeds” or racial categories - Northern, Alpine and Mediterranean.

The Nordic race, common in Northern Europe, representing one of these three categories (small races or anthropological types) included in the composition, is distinct from the others and shows, within the limits of its diversity, many characteristics unique to itself. Its representatives live mainly (but not exclusively) in Northern Europe, among the German-speaking population, and are characterized by dolichocephaly (elongated head shape), fair skin, high cheekbones, straight or slightly wavy blonde hair that can turn light brown or dark brown with age. Proponents of the "Nordic Theory" argued that the "Nordics" in the history of human civilization occupied a dominant position in ancient times, even among the Mediterranean race, hinting that some had blond hair.

The Nordic race, in turn, is divided into two subgroups - central and peripheral (Atlantic, neo-Danubian subtypes). The central group refers to three anthropological types: Borreby, Brunn, Scandinavian. The first two are characterized by archaic features that go back to the Upper Paleolithic types: tall stature, massive build, large head, wide face. These are the descendants of the first peoples who settled in northwestern Europe.

The Scandinavian group exists in two types: Hallstatt and the Celtic type of the British Isles and the Netherlands. It appeared in northwestern Europe during times along with the Celtic and Germanic cultures. In many areas, such as Denmark and northern Germany, the various types of Nordic races are inextricably linked, as is common among Northern Europeans living in the United States.

It often happens that different subracial classifications exist in quite a narrow circle. A relatively homogeneous population, the Hallstatt of the Scandinavian type, can be found in southeastern Norway and central Sweden, an area that the famous American anthropologist Carleton Stevens Kuhn called "the home of the classical Scandinavian race." In his work "The Races of Europe" (1939) he says that the modern Scandinavian race is a mixture of two archaic Mediterranean anthropological cultures and the Danubian type). However, based on DNA research, this relationship was found to be incorrect. They showed much more close connection between the Scandinavian and Upper Paleolithic types - more than with any of the Mediterranean types.

Initially, the very concept of “Nordic race” (northern) was introduced by the French anthropologist Joseph Deniker, who created a classification of races in 1900. Its use was intended to describe an "ethnic community" (ethnos).

In the 21st century, there was unanimous agreement between anthropologists and biologists that there are no “pure” races, and never have been. The advent of population genetics further undermined theories about the categorization of Europeans into clearly defined racial groups.

But in any case, amidst the prevailing uncertainties about racial categories, the fact remains that northerners are characterized by certain physical signs, as well as a special pattern of social behavior, which can be called “Nordic character”. These are independence, perseverance, initiative, willpower, hard work, and a keen sense of justice.

3. Norid (Nordid + Dinarid) and Celtic Nordid

These two types are so similar to each other that even experts find it difficult to clearly define them.

Norid combines features of both Nordid and Dinarid. Distributed in places of contact between the two races that form the type - throughout Central Europe: eastern France, Switzerland, Austria, northern Italy, southern Germany (Bavaria), Czech Republic, Slovakia, southern Poland, northern Balkan Peninsula, western Ukraine. 4. Atlantis and Northern Atlantis

Iranian (Middle Eastern) Nordid

A subtype of the Nordic racial type in places not typical of Nordics - in the Middle East and Central Asia. Iranian-Nordics usually appear either in closed mountain populations, untouched by mixing since the time of the ancient Indo-Europeans (Pashtuns, Kalash), or as a random burst of genes (in most cases). It arose as a result of the migrations of Nordic Indo-European tribes to the South and Southeast. A set of characteristics common to of this type, was identified in many areas among the modern population of Western Asia and the Caucasus. People of the Central Asian race of the middle and short, stocky, short-headed, with a steep nape; the face is of medium width, with a strongly protruding massive nose, curved downward or hooked in the cartilaginous part, with a fleshy tip. The lips are quite fleshy. The eyes are brown, with bulging eyelids. The hair is brown or black, usually wavy, often curly. The body hair is very developed, the eyebrows are dense, often fused on the bridge of the nose.

Western Asians, except Armenia, are found among the population of the entire Middle East, Turkey, and Greece. This racial type is also common among Jews, found among them both in pure form and in combination with other signs of Caucasoid types.
